These include not only dads and grandfathers, but father figures & other influential men who offer care & guidance to the people they love. Many celebrations continue to look different than they were prior to the pandemic, & Father’s Day festivities may still require some modifications this year, even if celebrations are not governed by the same restrictions as in 2020. The following are some ways to celebrate: Backyard bash - Restrictions on outdoor gatherings have eased up considerably in many areas. Outdoor parties are some of the safer ways to bring people together, particularly if attendees maintain their distance.

Weather permitting, families can host barbecues & enlist someone other than Dad to man the grill. Serve foods buffet-style & space out tables so people can safely celebrate.

Plan a sports outing - Professional sports teams are once again welcoming fans to stadiums & other venues, albeit with reduced capacities to maintain safety. It may be possible to purchase tickets to an upcoming game & surprise Dad or Grandpa with tickets on Father’s Day. Make Father’s Day festivities sports-centric, with coordinated decorations and themed foods to set the scene.

Plan a game day - Whether your father likes board games, video games or crossword puzzles, gear Father’s Day around fun & games. Let Dad lead the way & choose the activity, & then everyone can step away from their screens & come together at the table over jigsaw puzzles or trivia questions.

Host a beer tasting - If Dad is a beer lover, organize a trip to a local craft brewery to sample their offerings. If establishments are closed or still restricting indoor seating, pick up beers from a few different breweries & create a flight at home.

Set up an outdoor movie night - Perfect for a father who is a movie buff, borrow or purchase a projector & show a movie on an outdoor screen or against a blank outdoor wall. Select one of Dad’s favorite movies to watch & invite friends & family to join in on the fun. Make sure there are refreshments at the ready & plenty of hot popcorn.

Spring At The Keen Age Center Letter From: Kelly Hillan, Exec. Director of The Keen Age Center

Dear Friends, Spring is upon us & there is an unmistakable sense of renewal – flowers blooming, blue skies, warmer temperatures & best of all our masks are off! You may be familiar with the man & dog statue in front of the Keen Age Center. Just the other day we ceremoniously removed his mask – I am not exaggerating when I say I was absolutely thrilled! He had some cobwebs under his mask that needed to be wiped away. Maybe you felt this way as you were staying safe through the pandemic – like you were growing cobwebs! For those that are vaccinated & can safely do so, many of us are resuming activities without wearing masks or physically distancing. The Keen Age Center is following the mask guidance outlined by the Illinois Department of Public Health & we are pleased as can be to have our activities restored.

Our delight continues as we are also able to join you at the Boone County Fair again this year. We are currently looking for nominees for our 2021 Keen Age King & Queen. We were disappointed that we were not able to crown a new King & Queen in 2020 due to the pandemic but we are thankful to Mr. & Mrs. Coffey for graciously continuing their reign.

Our drive-through dinners with the Moose Club have been such a hit that we plan to continue them. Please see our advertisement for Spring into Summer for more details on this fundraising event coming up on Saturday, June 19, 2021, 4-7 PM at the Belvidere Moose Lodge, 575 Beloit Rd. Mental Health Impact On Caregivers Northern Illinois Hospice will host a free presentation - COVID-19 Mental Health Impact On Caregivers. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives in many ways, including taking a toll on our mental health. The challenges of the past year have caused many to experience a range of emotions, including depression, anxiety, and stress. Being a caregiver has also triggered feelings of isolation. While the pandemic is not quite over, there are ways to cope with these feelings & overcome worry that can often be debilitating.

Join Northern Illinois Hospice part-time physician, Lauren Ives, MD, as she offers some strategies on how to navigate these uneasy times to help yourself & others become more resilient. This presentation will be Wednesday, June 9th, 12:30-1:30 PM at Northern Illinois Hospice, 4751 Harrison Ave., Rockford or virtually on Zoom. Limited in-person seating is offered. There will be a 30 minute presentation followed by Q & A. Lauren Ives, MD, is Board Certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Ives’ practice is located at SwedishAmerican’s Valley Clinic in Rockford. She completed medical school at Ross University School of Medicine & residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. As a family physician, Dr. Ives cares for the entire family from pediatrics through geriatrics. She finds purpose in supporting patients & their families through their hospice transition & making the journey as easy as possible for them.

Pet Adoptions According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs & cats euthanized in U.S. animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs & cats were euthanized.

The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions & greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs & cats.

How To Care For Perennials

Perennials add color & vibrancy to any garden. One of the more desirable components of perennials is that they come back year after year, meaning homeowners do not have to invest in a gardenful of new flowers every year.

That can add up to considerable savings. Perennials often form the foundation of beautiful gardens. Perennials die back to the ground every autumn & their roots survive the winter. So the plants reemerge in the spring. Some perennials are short-lived, meaning they come back a few consecutive years; others last for decades.

Though planted perennials require less maintenance than annuals, they are not completely maintenance-free.

Certain care is needed to help perennials thrive, & that starts with the soil. In fact, soil is the single most important factor for growing healthy plants. Penn State Extension says most perennials grow ideally in well drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6-7. In addition, organic matter can improve soil texture & water-holding ability.

When including perennials in the garden, make sure you wait for the right time to plant them. The ideal time is during the spring or fall. Perennials come as container-grown perennials, which already have been established in the soil. Bare-root perennials are just roots that are often packed in peat moss. In order to plant bare-root perennials, soak the roots in water for several minutes before gently planting in the ground.

Perennials should be watered deeply, especially during the first growing season. However, the soil should never be overly dry or wet. Most perennials do not need to be fertilized heavily. A single application in the spring typically is all that’s needed.

Care along the way can include deadheading spent flowers so that plants can use their energy on seed production & reblooming. Perennials should be divided when they grow large, every three to four years when the plants are not in bloom. Perennials produce fewer flowers or may look sickly when the time has passed to divide them. Early spring often is a good time to divide perennials, advises The Farmer’s Almanac.

A thick layer of mulch can help perennials to overwinter successfully. Perennials in containers will need to be transplanted into the garden before it gets cold because containers cannot insulate perennial roots. Perennials pretty much take care of themselves. As long as sunlight requirements match plant needs, they should thrive.

Understanding Asthma As Allergy Season Returns The arrival of summer is typically welcomed with open arms. Warm air, green grass, colorful flowers, &, of course, vacations are just a few of the many reasons to celebrate summer. Summer also marks the return of allergy season. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. For many people, allergies are a minor seasonal nuisance that are overcome by taking over-the-counter medications or staying indoors on days when allergen levels are especially high. But the World Allergy Organization notes that a history of allergies is a known risk factor for developing asthma. In fact, among people diagnosed with allergies, 63% also reported having asthma.

What is asthma? The National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute defines asthma as a chronic condition that affects airways in the lungs. The airways carry air in & out of the lungs, & when people have asthma, these airways can become inflamed & narrow, compromising a person’s ability to breathe.

Who gets asthma? Many asthma patients are diagnosed during childhood. The ACAAI reports that most children with asthma exhibit symptoms prior to their fifth birthdays. Asthma symptoms also may appear in adults older than 20, & such instances may be attributed to adult-onset asthma. Certain adults may be more likely to get adult-onset asthma than others. For example, WebMD reports that women who are experiencing hormonal changes, such as those who are pregnant or in menopause, may be more likely to get adult-onset asthma.

What are the symptoms of asthma? The ACCAI notes that symptoms of adult-onset asthma can be easy to miss. That’s because of natural changes in muscles & a stiffening of chest walls, both of which are associated with aging & therefore often attributed to age. The symptoms of adult-onset asthma are similar to those of pediatric asthma, & adults who suspect they might be experiencing asthma symptoms despite no history of the condition can ask doctors to conduct some specific tests designed to detect asthma. A lung function test & a methacholine challenge test are two ways doctors can detect adult-onset asthma. Symptoms include: Coughing, especially at night; A wheezing or whistling sound when breathing, especially when exhaling; Trouble breathing or fast breathing that causes the skin around the ribs or neck to pull in tightly; Frequent colds that settle in the chest.

Ingredients 2 small yellow summer squash or zucchini (or one of each) 1 small onion 1 Tablespoon butter or margarine 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Nutrition Facts Per Serving Calories 120 Total Fat 6 g Sodium 25 mg Carbohydrates 16 g Dietary Fiber 3 g Protein 3 g

1. Wash hands with soap & water. Gently rub produce under cold running water before preparing ingredients.

2. Cut summer squash or zucchini into 1/4-inch rounds. Cut onion in half & then into thin slices.

3. Gather two large pieces of foil. Divide cut squash & zucchini evenly between foil pieces. Divide butter & black pepper evenly between foil packets. Fold foil to seal all sides.

4. Grill over indirect heat for 15-20 minutes or until vegetables are tender. To bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees & bake in foil 30-45 minutes.
