The Belvidere Family YMCA Summer Barracudas will again be swimming in the North Central Illinois Swim Conference. Parent participation is required for meets. Register Now! Practices: Now - July 14th, Mon. - Thurs., 6 - 8 PM. Meets: Tuesday & Thursday evenings Our warm-ups for home meets start at 5 PM & the away team at 5:30 PM. Meets start at 6 PM. Conference Championships: July 16th. Fee: $100 per swimmer. Swimmers need to be able to swim 1 length of the pool using freestyle arms & face in the water. A YMCA Family Membership is required. It can be a Summer Family Membership (if new to the YMCA) & if you are swimming only for the summer. High School swimmers who are new and swimming only for the summer will need a teen summer membership. If a high school student is 18 then a young adult summer membership is required. The YMCA will be hosting a cheer camp for boys and girls (K thru 8th) staffed by the Belvidere North Cheerleaders. The week long cheer camp will work on cheers, chants, stunts, jumps & dance. Each camp participant will receive a t-shirt on the last day of camp when they will be performing for friends and family the routines they worked on during the week. This recipe is courtesy of University Of Illinois Extension Ingredients 2 pounds potatoes 1/2 cup reduced fat mayonnaise 2 eggs, hard-cooked and diced 1/4 cup reduced fat sour cream 2 ribs celery, diced 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 medium red onion, diced 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 dill pickle, diced 1 tablespoon dried dill
Directions 1. Cover potatoes with water in large saucepan and boil for about 10-12 minutes, until just tender. Pour off water & peel. Cut potatoes into cubes & place in large bowl. 2. Combine potatoes with eggs, celery, red onion, and dill pickle. 3. In another bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, vinegar, dill & Dijon mustard. 4. Add to the potatoes and stir gently to combine.

Protect Your Joints & Prevent Pain Joints play vital roles in the human body, forming the connections between bones & facilitating movement. Damage to the joints can be especially painful, & that damage may result from conditions such as osteoarthritis or gout. While not all joint pain is debilitating, the discomfort of joint pain is such that it’s wise for adults to take steps to protect their joints with the hope of preventing joint pain down the road. Recognizing that joint pain can negatively affect quality of life, the Arthritis Foundation offers the following tips to men & women. • Forgo fashion with regard to footwear. When women choose their footwear, fashion should not be their top priority. According to the Arthritis Foundation, three-inch heels stress the feet seven times more than one-inch heels & heels put additional stress on knees, possibly increasing women’s risk for osteoarthritis. • Get some green in your diet. A healthy diet pays numerous dividends, but many may not know that a healthy diet can help prevent joint pain. Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale & parsley are high in calcium & can reduce age-related bone loss while also slowing cartilage destruction. • Shed those extra pounds. Weight loss can help your joints, as the AF notes that every extra pound a person gains puts four times the stress on his or her knees. The AF also notes that research has shown that losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce a person’s risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent. • Hit the pool. Swimming is a great full-body workout & can be especially helpful to the joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, reducing stress on the joints & minimizing pain as a result. If possible, swimmers already experiencing pain should swim in heated pools, which can help relieve pain. While you can still benefit from swimming in pools with colder temperatures, cold water may not soothe the joints like warm water can. The Basics On Long-Term Care Insurance Various insurance plans protect individuals from financial calamity. Insurance works by requiring policy holders to pay a premium. In the event of an accident or incident, a claim can be filed & the insurance company will reimburse the person for expenses, minus the deductible. Health insurance is one type of insurance that people have to manage their health & well-being. There’s also another, perhaps lesser-known insurance that can prove invaluable. It is called long-term care insurance. Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, is an insurance product that is found primarily in the United States, Canada & the United Kingdom. LTCI generally covers assisted living needs, home care, hospice care, adult daycare, & other requirements of senior living and/or health management. People who invest in LTCI are planning ahead for the times when they may no longer be able to care for themselves without assistance. LTCI will help offset the ever-rising costs associated with specialized senior housing & nursing facilities. Traditional healthcare insurance & government-sponsored plans (i.e., Medicare) will not pay for daily, extended care services. The AARP notes that these other plans may only cover a short stay in a sub-acute rehabilitation center or nursing home, or pay for a limited amount of at-home care. LTCI can help families finance the cost of medical care when all other options will not. LTCI should be looked into early in life, as policies often cost less if purchased when one is younger & in good health. People in poor health or already receiving long-term care services may not qualify for LTCI outright. But there are some workarounds, including buying a limited amount of coverage or coverage at a higher “nonstandard” rate. Some policies do not require medical underwriting, & these may be advantageous to people with preexisting health conditions. When shopping for policies, look into how long LTCI will pay. Some policies include limits on how long or how much providers will pay for care, with some plans maxing out at two to five years. Other policies may not implement a term limit. Speak with a tax specialist as well, as premiums paid on a long-term care insurance products may be tax deductible. Long-term care insurance is a way for individuals to finance the often expensive costs for medical services that may be required as one ages.

Fishing is a beloved pastime for many people. Fans of fishing are often passionate about the sport, & that passion has inspired many novices to try their hand at becoming anglers. Though there is no way to guarantee you will catch a fish the first time out, you are likely to have some fun, especially if you head out to the nearest fishing hole with a fully stocked tackle box. While even first-timers know to bring a fishing pole & some bait along, there are some additional items to add to a tackle box. The extras - It never hurts to bring along some extra supplies. Fishing line can break in the mouth of a fish or on items in the water, so you will almost certainly need some extra line. If your fishing hole is known for difficult conditions, pack some heavier & more durable line. When conditions are more serene, a thin, less visible line should suffice. You should also expect to lose a few hooks on your trip, so pack extra hooks of various sizes. Bobbers - Few things are as exciting when fishing as that first bite from a fish. Bobbers are the items you attach to your fishing line that let you know when fish are taking a bite on your line. Bobbers come in various shapes, but many people are familiar with the red & white round bobbers, which can be easily attached to your line. Round bobbers limit how deep you can cast your line. If you’re looking to cast a line deep, slip bobbers allow you to do just that. Fake worms - First-timers might be a little skittish using live bait, so some fake plastic worms might be the best fit when embarking on a first fishing trip. Plastic worms come in various sizes & shapes, & after your initial trip you might decide you want to move on to live bait. Lures - Lures come in many varieties, & these are intended to attract fish on those days when nothing seems to be biting. Lures may help first-timers get their feet wet & catch their first fish. That’s especially true when using lures that look like minnows, a popular snack for many fish. Pliers - Unexpected issues often arise when fishing for the first time, & one such issue is what to do when you have caught your first fish. Expect to catch a fish & bring along a pair of pliers in anticipation of that first catch. Pliers take the hook out of the fish once it’s been caught, so bring along a pair & expect to use them.
