Keep Skin Healthy By Knowing Sunscreen Facts The best way to care for skin is to be smart about sun exposure. Too much unprotected exposure to the sun can cause a host of problems, from premature wrinkling to skin cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, millions of cases of skin cancer are reported each year, & many more may go undetected. The best way to protect skin from the sun is to stay out of the sun. When that is not feasible, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen can guard against damage from ultraviolet radiation. Although sunscreen is an enormous help, it is not foolproof. Sunburns & skin damage can occur even when using sunscreen, & user error accounts for much of that damage. To get the best results from any sunscreen product, consumers can educate themselves about proper application & avoid information inaccuracies. Myth: The best sunscreen is the one with the highest SPF. Actually, the best sunscreen is the one you will use regularly. Make sure you like the scent & feel of the sunscreen. Decide if you prefer a sunscreen that is grouped together with a moisturizer or a makeup foundation. Try sunscreens that are lotions or sticks to figure out which application works best for you. Make sure the sunscreen has an adequate sun protection factor. Myth: I only need sunscreen on sunny days. The sun can prove harmful even on cloudy days. You may not be safe indoors, either, particularly if you spend a good deal of time next to an open window. Window glass will only block certain types of UV light, making sunburn possible even if you are indoors or riding in a car. It’s a good habit to apply sunscreen daily regardless of if you will be out in the sun. Myth: Spray sunscreens are as effective as others. Spray products may not deliver enough sunscreen to the skin because droplets are dispersed unevenly. Also, the propellents used in spray sunscreens could be harmful if inhaled. Opt for sunscreens that are applied by hand & can be adequately coated over all areas of skin. Myth: Sunscreen does not need to be reapplied, especially if it’s water-resistant. There is no such thing as a waterproof sunscreen. The Food & Drug Administration recently prohibited the use of the term “waterproof” because consumers falsely believed their sunscreen products would not wash off. Water-resistant sunscreens will be effective for a certain number of minutes before they need to be reapplied, usually between 40 - 90 minutes. If you have been sweating profusely or have been in the water for awhile, play it safe & reapply often. Myth: A little drop of sunscreen is all that’s needed. Many people are applying far too little sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun. The average person needs about an ounce of lotion to cover his or her entire body. Think about the size of a shot glass & use that amount.

National flags serve to unite citizens of a given country. Flags wave proudly in front of government buildings & schools, & they also identify athletes during international sporting competitions. Flags also serve as symbols of honor for members of the military & their families. For more than 200 years, the American flag has been a symbol of unity & pride in the United States. The red, white & blue flag has a storied history & has gone through various incarnations. The following are some of the more interesting facts pertaining to the American flag. • Six different flag designs were flown before Betsy Ross announced that she had sewn the official American flag including a series of alternating red & white stripes, the Liberty Tree, the Sons of Liberty, & the Forester flag designs. The Continental Army once used a flag featuring a snake with the mantra “Don’t Tread on Me.” • On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress proposed & passed the Flag Act of 1777. This resolution was designed to facilitate the creation of an official flag for a nation that was aiming to earn its independence from Great Britain. The flag was to have thirteen stripes, alternating red & white, with thirteen white stars on a blue field. The thirteen stars signified the original members of the Union. • The American flag remained unchanged until 1795, when the stripes & stars were increased to 15 for the addition of Kentucky & Vermont to the Union. • After seeing the new 15-star & striped flag flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the poem that would eventually become the nation’s national anthem. • A sea captain from Massachusetts named William Driver named a large, 10-foot-by-17-foot flag “Old Glory” after it survived multiple defacing attempts during the American Civil War. Driver’s nickname of the flag inspired the name to be used for all American flags. • Although Flag Day was established as a formal national holiday in 1949, it was not made a federal holiday. Flag Day is only an official holiday in the state of Pennsylvania. This may be fitting because legend holds that Betsy Ross sewed the first flag in Pennsylvania. • Today’s flag features the original 13 alternating white & red stripes (in 1818, another design went into effect, permanently setting the number of stripes at 13 in honor of the original colonies) & 50 stars to represent the states of the Union. The colors of the flag signify as follows: red for hardiness & valor, white for purity & innocence, & blue for vigilance, perseverance & justice.

Such donations can help the less fortunate, while donors can take advantage of tax benefits while decluttering their homes. There is also an environmental advantage to donating items rather than putting them in the trash. Goodwill Industries International, Inc. says that, over the last few years, generous people have helped to keep billions of pounds of clothing and household items out of landfills. Organizations that collect donations put them to use in many different ways. A portion of donated items may be sold in charity shops & other retail centers. This provides an avenue for less fortunate individuals to purchase items that are steeply discounted from regular retail prices. Some clothing donations are sold to recycling manufacturers who turn them into rags or industrial cleaning materials. Donated clothing & other items may even end up in the hands of private enterprises, who then sell it in developing nations at costs lower than regularly imported clothing, providing an affordable way for people living in poverty overseas to purchase items for themselves & their families. The organizations then put the money made from such sales toward their operational expenses & to develop programs to continue to help the less fortunate. Charities like Goodwill & The Salvation Army indicate on their websites that proceeds from charity & thrift shops go directly to support education, work & drug rehab programs. Specialty items like computers, vehicles or mattresses may have specific requirements for donations. Alice L. Souders, 89 Alice L. Souders, formerly of Belvidere, IL died on March 31, 2017 in North Port, FL after a short illness. Alice was born on the 21st of October, 1927 in Ottawa, IL. The daughter of Lester and Genevieve Knutson. Alice married William (Bill) Souders on June 12,1949 in Belvidere, IL. She had many interests: Astronomy, airplanes, car shows and her horse. She loved going to The Boone County Fair, she went every day, all day, and swimming at the YMCA. Later, while living in Florida, going to the beach looking for shark’s teeth. Alice retired from GTE in Genoa, IL. She is survived by her son, Timothy R. Souders; sister, Lila Hatcher; two grandchildren, Chantea (Brian) Hoffman, William (Max) Souders; great grandson, Riley Hoffman; many nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William H. Souders; son, William (Billy) L. Souders; daughter, Patricia Souders; sisters, Grace (Wendell) Anderson, Charlotte Sanders; great grandson, Jenson Riley Hoffman. Funeral Memorial Services will be held at 11 AM at the First United Methodist Church, Belvidere, IL. Visitation from 10 AM, June 3, 2017 until time of service, Rev. Monty Fox presiding. Burial at Highland Memorial Gardens, Monday, June 5, 2017 at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, make donations to The Salvation Army.
