G 2017-18 School Registration Information New Registration Guideline: Attention All Families: Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year all students must submit the required Health Forms on or before the 1st day of school or they will NOT be allowed to start school until the forms are received. Students entering Kindergarten, 6th and 9th Grades are required to submit a School Physical with up-to-date immunizations, or Physician signed Medical or Religious Objection paperwork. 12th graders must be up-to-date with two Meningitis immunizations, or one after their 16th birthday. This change is being implemented following School Board adoption of this New 1st Day Exclusion Policy at their February 21, 2017 meeting. North Boone Welcomes Two New Board Members On Saturday April 25th, the North Boone School District welcomed Tom Kinser and Brian Haselhorst to the School Board. Mr. Haselhorst is new to the Board this year, and it will be Mr. Kinser’s second time on the School Board. Both men have been very involved in the District at meetings and on committees, and they will be excellent additions to the School Board.

North Boone Approves Plans for Summer Facilities Work In the Fall of 2015, the North Boone School District began Strategic Planning as well as Ten Year Life Safety Planning to address the facility needs and refurbish all of the buildings in the North Boone School District. The School Board has dedicated the money that is raised from the sales tax revenue towards the upgrades. For the Summer of 2017, the Board approved approximately $400,000 worth of repairs. The large projects will include a new roof on the gym of the Middle School, roof repairs on the Upper Elementary School, and new windows at Manchester School. The District will also be addressing some repair and painting projects at Poplar Grove and Capron, as well as sealcoating on various sections of the playgrounds and parking lots. North Boone High School NBHS Students do well at HS Model United Nations Conference! They worked to pass a resolution on Strategies for Global Counter-Terrorism. We are very proud of our seniors who committed to higher education at the 2017 college signing assembly! NBHS seniors committed to attending over 20 different colleges. We wish you well in your future endeavors! North Boone Upper Elementary/Middle School As you can see by the picture, our students are having fun! In the past, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by implementing punishment-based strategies including reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions, and expulsion. Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used in the absence of positive strategies, is ineffective. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. This is known as PBIS -- Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports. Some of the positive rewards included having an ice cream truck, BINGO, an extra recess, Edward’s Apple Orchard donuts, making tie/dye shirts and “Torture the Teacher” activities.

Manchester Elementary Hatches Chickens Mrs. Parris’ 3rd Grade Class at Manchester Elementary participated in an exciting and memorable science project as part of their Structures of Life Unit. Using learning materials and supplies for Chick Embryology provided by the 4H - University of Illinois Extension, Mrs. Parris’ students were able to have a truly hands-on approach to earning about the life cycle of a chicken. They started their unit by cracking open and identifying the parts of an egg. The students were amazed as they were able to identify things like the embryo, albumen, chalazae, and air cell. As the incubator and eggs arrived from the 4H - U of I Extension, the students could hardly wait for the twenty-one days of incubation to begin! Fast forward to Day 21!! The eggs began to hatch! With a live Webcam set up, ocusing on a window in the incubator and another camera on the cage, the students were able to continuously watch the progress and goings on of the new baby chicks. Classrooms around the District and families at home were also tuning in to hopefully catch a glimpse of one of the chicks hatching from their shell. In the few days hat followed, students around the school enjoyed a chance to hold the new baby chicks. Mrs. Parris’ students especially enjoyed naming a few of them: Captain, Olive, Crazy, Hairy, Coal there were 13 in all! Thank you, 4H - University of Illinois Extension, for providing a wonderful learning opportunity for our students!!

Capron A fantastic Cinco de Mayo Celebration took place on May 2nd. Parents and staff from the North Boone Bilingual Parent Association organized the event, which included making delicious, authentic, Mexican food, and taught students from Capron and the Upper Elementary festive dances. Students from Capron made decorations and wrote essays that were shared. Families from throughout the District came and enjoyed the festive atmosphere and culture of our bilingual families.

Capron Art Fair On April 6th, Capron held its Annual Art Fair showcasing amazing artwork and living art displays created by Capron Students. The event was coordinated by Ms. Shannon Harkness. Each class created an original piece of art that was auctioned. Many donations of artwork were donated by local artists and businesses, and were auctioned off as well. Student work created throughout the year was displayed around the gym for all to see. Several individual students transformed themselves into “living art”, depicting either a famous work of art, or artist. Every student decorated a feather that was used to create the pair of wings pictured:

Poplar Grove On May 8th, Poplar Grove Elementary held a K-4 Patriotic Concert. Mrs. Zimber organized an amazing night of music! The students sounded amazing and their hard work paid off.

PGE Fourth Grade Book Drive Our fourth grade students held a book drive to collect new and gently used books for all ages during the last month that was presented by Miss Boone County. We have collected hundreds of books to be handed out in the community!
