Explore The True Meaning Of Easter Bunnies & baskets, chocolates & candies. It’s that time of year when parents & grandparents scramble to ensure their children wake up to a trove of treats, & families decide on who is serving the Easter dinner this year. These are some of the familiar Easter traditions, but much more is involved with the holiday than egg hunts & brightly adorned bonnets. For the religious, it can be important to delve into the true meanings behind Easter & let those discoveries help shape celebrations. Easter, above all, is a religious commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the culmination of the holy period known as Lent, & it the most significant date on the Christian liturgical calendar. This year Easter is celebrated on Sunday, April 21st. Jesus Christ was the Son of God, who fulfilled the prophesies that he would give his own life for his people so they could enjoy eternal life after their own mortal bodies perished. Easter, from Jesus’ very own words, marked a new covenant for the faithful. According to scripture, Jesus was enjoying the Passover dinner when he sat down with his disciples. Understanding that this would be his last earthly meal & that someone close to him would betray him, he took bread & gave thanks to God for it. He broke the bread & said it was his body that should be given up so sins would be forgiven. He did a similar gesture with wine, indicating that it was his blood that should be shed as a sacrifice for all. Christ instructed the disciples to do the same ritual in the future in memory of him. Jesus was subsequently betrayed & turned over to the authorities. He was sentenced to crucifixion & perished on the cross. His body was cleansed & placed in a tomb sealed by a stone. His followers were unaware of the miracle that would ensue in the days to come. On Easter Sunday, the tomb was discovered open & empty. Jesus had risen from the dead, providing irrefutable proof that he was the Son of God. In turn, Jesus fulfilled all he was born to do & preached. Easter did not always symbolize Christ’s resurrection when it was first celebrated. It was once a pagan ritual of renewal & birth. However, when early missionaries began spreading Christianity’s message, the holiday - falling around the time of Christ’s actual resurrection - was adopted to commemorate the religious miracle. Today it stands as a testament to ultimate sacrifice & the promise of eternal life for all who believe in him.
Boone County Public Transportation The Boone County Council on Aging provides public transportation for Belvidere and Boone County. They pick clients up at their home address & drop them off at their destination. Anyone can ride their buses. Door to Door Bus Service within Boone County with a one-day notice. Fees: Adults - $2; Adults over 60 - donations accepted; children under 12 - $1.00 (children under 12 must be escorted by an adult & children 3 & under must have a car seat). A medical escort car is also offered to help with medical rides to adjoining counties. At least one week advance notice is required. Availability is limited so call early. The escort drives you to your appointment, stays with you, and when you are ready, returns you to your home. The medical car is billed by mileage, at a rate of 50¢ per mile. Deaths due to prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999. For adults 25-65, drug overdoses have caused more deaths than motor vehicle accidents. See how opioid medications can affect you. How To Travel Even If You Have Limited Mobility Many people dream of traveling the world in retirement. Such dreams come true every day. But many more retirees or people nearing retirement fear that their dreams of seeing the world won’t be possible due to mobility issues beyond their control. Thankfully, such fears are largely unwarranted. Various conditions can affect men and women’s mobility. Many such issues tend to arise after age 50, prompting many people to believe their post-retirement travel plans will never come to fruition. Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD; & heart disease may make it hard for people to travel. But that difficulty doesn’t mean aging men & women should resign themselves to a sedentary lifestyle. Though they might require a little extra effort before boarding a plane for parts unknown, the following are a handful of ways that aging men & women with limited mobility can reap the rewards of traveling. • Contact airlines or other transportation companies if you require special accommodations. The U.S. Dept. of Transportation notes that passengers are generally not required to provide advanced notice for disability-related accommodations. However, it makes sense to provide such notice anyway. By doing so, men & women with limited mobility can ensure they will have adequate assistance during their trips. When made aware of passengers’ mobility issues, airlines or other travel companies may arrange for wheelchairs to be available at the gates or train platforms so passengers can easily make connecting flights & trains. In addition, advance notice gives companies a chance to provide seating accommodations that can make for a more enjoyable trip. • Contact security agencies. Security is part of modern travel, so travelers, especially those traveling by air, should expect to go through security checkpoints during their trips. Travelers should contact the security agencies in their home country as well as those in any country they plan to visit to get an idea of what they can expect. Knowing these guidelines in advance can help people with limited mobility determine if they should arrive extra early so they can make it through security checkpoints in time to make their flights or trains. • Contact hotels directly. Each country has its own laws regarding how to accommodate people with physical disabilities or mobility issues, so don’t leave things to chance. Before booking a hotel room abroad, travelers with limited mobility should contact the hotel directly to confirm that it can accommodate their needs. Men and women with limited mobility can still enjoy the wonders of travel, even if it requires some extra effort before embarking on their trips.

3. Ensure your pet is spayed or neutered. Animals that have not been spayed or neutered have a tendency to roam because they are looking to fulfill the instinct to mate. Neutering removes this desire, & the pets may be more content to remain at home.

Shopping for new plants for a home can be an exciting undertaking. Nurseries & garden centers are often home to dozens of types of plant species that come in various colors, leaf variations & sizes. Such variety can make choosing plants more fun while also making the process of buying plants a bit complicated, especially for novices. Thankfully, plant tags can help consumers make informed decisions.

Understanding how to read plant tags is key to making good choices. Such labels contain a lot of information, but once a person knows how to decode that data, he or she is well on the way to choosing the right plants. Common name - The common name of the plant tends to be the most noticeable word or words on the tag. This is the name the plant is referred to outside of scientific circles. Most plants have one or more common names in addition to their botanical name. Scientific (botanical) name - Scientific names are also known as the Latin names of the plant. Such names will be written in italics on the tag & are usually one or two words. The scientific name includes the genus (group) & the species of the plant. Cultivar - The tag may further describe the type of plant by including the cultivar. A cultivar is the variation on the species. It may describe a size or color variation. The cultivar is listed in single quotations by the scientific name. Sun requirements - The tag should list how much sun exposure the plant requires to thrive. It may be anywhere from full sun to full shade. Height & spread - The label frequently includes the maximum growing height & width the plant should reach when mature. This gives gardeners an understanding of just how much room the plant will take up in the garden and how to space plants in a landscape. Water needs - How much water the plant requires may be featured on the tag as well. This helps gardeners know if they need soil to be damp or relatively dry. Hardiness or zone - Tags that list zones will describe the coldest zone in which the plant can exist or will give a range. Many annuals will not list a hardiness zone because they are not expected to last beyond one season. Perennial or annual - The tag should designate the plant as an annual or perennial. Annuals are not expected to last through the winter and will need to be replanted the following year. Perennials can over-winter and will regenerate year after year. Tags also may list information such as special care needs, drought tolerance, uses for the plant, & when the plant blooms. Some plant labels will inform gardeners if the plants were produced organically or without GMO practices. Trademark information also may be included. Tags provide important info for selecting plants.
