We are evidence-based program focused on ages 11-18 and their families. NATIONAL PREVENTION WEEK is May 9-15th held through the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration. It is time for a positive change in Ward 5. I love Belvidere & work extremely hard to make a difference in our community. My education, experience & background have prepared me well to represent my ward. I support & work well with local law enforcement and other governmental agencies. I have created & managed budgets for various types of organizations. I am a volunteer, helping many local organizations, including First United Methodist Church, the Belvidere Historical Society & I’m enrolled in the Citizen’s Police Academy. If elected, I will provide accountability, dependability & a voice for ALL people in Ward 5.
What do I think is the most important issue for the residents of my ward and how do I plan to address it? Ward 5 needs representation that is transparent, professional & working for the best interests of the entire ward. My initial focus will be to tackle repairing city roads & sewage infrastructure by working within our budget, using taxpayer money wisely, and applying for grants. We also need to work on improving & promoting economic recovery & growth, post-pandemic. I write in support of Christine Gardner’s candidacy for Alderperson for Belvidere Ward 5. I have known Chris’s family and her for 10 years. During that time, she has proven to be a kind, selfless, and thoughtful friend. This was never on display as much as when my family contracted Covid-19 over the holidays. Upon learning we were quarantined in our home for 14 days, Chris said “whatever you need, I’ll be there.” And she was. Without hesitation, she picked up our groceries and delivered them to us, making more than one stop for special items. She drove through the snow several times, dropping everything at our doorstep and giving us a supportive wave and virtual hug from outside. She checked on us daily and prayed for our recovery. If her response to my family’s quarantine time is any indication of how she will care for and respect the citizens of Belvidere, they will be in great hands. Chris is a woman of great character, always looking to the right thing, even when it’s difficult. She and Lee have raised a beautiful family in our city, and we would be lucky to have her kindness and compassion help lead us forward.
Kathy (Denning) Walton Belvidere, IL Chris was a Deputy Clerk and Recorder during my term as Boone County Clerk and Recorder. She was one of the key women who helped manage vital information and served our community with pride. What stood out during my time working with Chris was her eagerness to solve problems and find efficient and effective means to get the job done. Dear Voters, I decided to run for Mayor when our current Mayor, after collecting thousands of dollars in out-of-town special interest money, voted in return to subsidize them with your tax money by eliminating impact fees. Furthermore, he presented to the council and advocated to abate the developer’s property taxes for 4 years and waive all permit/ inspection fees. In doing so, this precedent would become policy for any future residential development. This precedent would then excuse future growth from paying for itself, making certain hardworking taxpayers would instead. This simply places THEIR profits ahead of YOUR interests. That is nothing more than cronyism and “pay to play” and it is simply wrong. I have offered to debate our current Mayor on these issues and more and he has decided not to participate. He has tried to fool voters with a barrage of ads that say nothing and only prove special interests have placed a huge investment in him. It will prove at your expense. They have invested in him for a reason - we deserve better. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who trusted and helped me in this Mayoral election: Those who offered to contribute campaign funds (which I have declined); talked with me outside or in your home or business; requested a yard sign; placed an ad of support in the Boone County Shopper and Boone County Journal; sent letters to the Editors; passed out campaign literature and talked with your family and friends. I have known Mike Chamberlain since 2005, when he became an alderman. He has always had the best interest of Belvidere in mind. He has worked hard for the City and citizens of Belvidere. Mike became Mayor in 2013, and has tirelessly worked to move our City forward, overcoming negative agendas left by previous mayors. It has been a privilege to work with Mayor Mike. In all of my 25 years working for the City of Belvidere, Mike Chamberlain has been the best mayor I have worked with. He has always supported our City employees: Police, fire, public works, and all other city departments and workers. Mayor Mike never forgets to say, “Thank you for what you do for this great city,” and show his appreciation to all. Mike and I worked closely together during the last three years of my career with the City of Belvidere. He attended my monthly meetings with the seniors who live at Shadley Apartments, Sheffield Meadows, and Parkside Manor. Mayor Mike always looked forward to our meetings at the Keenage Center. His interest, kindness, and concern for our seniors was very evident to all in attendance. Mike is always very open about what is going on in the City, and his plans for the future. He answers questions directly and fully, and never fails to ask for our seniors’ opinions and concerns. Our Mayor energetically supports our Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), and the Boone County/Belvidere Police Explorer Program. He is also a graduate of our Citizens in Policing class. Our VIPS and Explorers volunteer their free time to man barricades at public events, man the City of Belvidere tent at the Boone County Fair, help with food drives, and many other public service projects that save many thousands of dollars in overtime for the police department every year. Mayor Mike brought back Heritage Days and grew it into a regionally recognized event. The event grows every year, with car shows, food vendors, a carnival, and Paint on State. Every year our Mayor recognizes groups in our community; retired Police and Fire leaders, BYB, youth programs, our Hispanic community, and many more. Mayor Mike serves us all. He is an advocate for the citizens of Belvidere, not any personal political agenda. I fully support Mayor Mike Chamberlain for re-election. John E. Fish

I have worked with the last five Mayors of Belvidere, four of them while Director of Buildings for the City of Belvidere. When I first met Mike, he was an Alderman. He was organizing a group of Belvidere High School Varsity Baseball Players to paint over graffiti sprayed on the old St. Joseph Hospital utility building. The building is on the corner of Julien & Andrews Drive. I offered to help clean up the building, along with my grandson Matt’s baseball team & Mike. We painted over the graffiti & picked up debris around the building making that part of the neighborhood a lot cleaner. Having had the privilege of working directly with Clint for several years I witnessed Clint successfully navigate the challenges between his and other departments that he needed to deal with to facilitate the requests of the external customer. He has always treated all parties with the utmost respect and took the time to listen to make sure that he understood what needed to be addressed. A conversation that Clint and I had gave me great insight into Clint’s character. He found out that I had not been invited to a departmental function and came over to me to say that he was embarrassed and apologized for the lack of an invitation and stated that he really would like for me to attend, that he wanted me there! That’s Clint in a nutshell: Apologetic, accountable, and even more importantly all inclusive. Clint helped my family to navigate the school system after my daughter went through some terrible traumatic events. With the school’s help we were able to make my daughter as safe as humanly possible. Clint has lived in Belvidere for more than five decades of his sixty-two years. He has been successfully involved with city politics in the past and from my humble perspective he would make a fantastic mayor. He understands the need for the city to manage its finances, to grow in a responsible way to make sure that our children and grandchildren receive a quality K through 12 education and most importantly to advocate for the individual taxpayer. He understands the importance of park and safety services and he will not ignore the needs of our town’s businesses and the maintenance of the city’s infrastructure. I have anointed Clint with the title of Mr. Belvidere. If he had lived most of his life in Freeport, I’m sure I’d be calling him Mr. Freeport. Of course, taking nothing away from his sibling. Time to vote in a mayor that cares about our city and all its residents.

Stroll on Buchanan has become a widely popular & well-attended event on Buchanan Street downtown. It helps us show-off our great community. Like Heritage Days & Hometown Christmas, it is also predominately funded by the private sector, using very little taxpayer money. General Mills Park came about through a land donation, a generous General Mills Donation, & other donated funds from the Realtors Association, FCA/Stellantis, & many others. To date, over $150K has been raised from private sector community partners. Literally tens-of-thousands of no-cost meals have been distributed to those in need during COVID at General Mills Park. The crime rate in the Park’s locale has fallen greatly, & the neighborhood keeps the park neat and free from graffiti. General Mills Park has been a huge win for the entire community. The outdoor fitness installation at Prairie Fields is also a collaboration. The City, The Park District, & a generous grant from the OSF Foundation made the well-enjoyed facility possible. There was also a grant from the National Fitness Group that brought the concept to the Mayor’s office. There are many, many public/private partnerships evident in our community, & many, many service clubs & organizations that make these community jewels a reality. The predominant funding for all of these comes from private entities, NOT taxpayer dollars.

During the many years I served as commissioner with Mary, Belvidere Township experienced some of its greatest growth. The commissioners under Mary’s Leadership as chairwoman, updated the neglected infrastructure. Mary’s expertise as a planner and budgeter were very evident The main park became much more user friendly as evidenced by the increased use by the Belvidere area residents. The park district commissioners, again with Mary’s leadership, expanded into neighborhood parks and partnered with the Belvidere School District to expand use of after school programs for children. All this expansion was done over a long period of time to keep taxes reasonable while getting the ‘biggest bang for taxpayers’ dollars through strict budgeting. The 21st century parks the residents now use every day would not be possible without Mary’s leadership and concern for her fellow citizens and taxpayers of Belvidere Township. Again, I urge you to VOTE APRIL 6TH for MARY MARQUARDT.
