The Meaning Behind The Shamrock When talking about Ireland & its culture & symbolism, many different images come to mind. Affectionately known as the Emerald Isle, Ireland is perhaps best known for its bright green hue. Irish flags & even harps are symbolic of the nation, but there is perhaps one symbol that most widely represents the country: The shamrock. A shamrock, by definition, is a young sprig of clover. However, plant experts actually have said that shamrocks are a distinct species of the clover plant, believed to be the white clover. The word “shamrock” is derived from the Irish “seamróg,” which translates as “young clover.” Over the centuries, this diminutive plant has come to symbolize Ireland & many things Irish. The shamrock also is a popular symbol of St. Patrick’s Day. The shamrock & Irish culture are so intertwined thanks to Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick. Legends attest to St. Patrick using the three petals of the shamrock to illustrate the mysteries of the Holy Trinity to the Celtic pagans. Each leaf represented the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit. The shamrock of Ireland has three leaves, not four as many people believe. The number three had significance in Ireland long before St. Patrick began to convert the masses. According to Blarney.com, the number three was believed to have magical properties & was a recurring theme in Celtic folklore. Because the Celts were familiar with the shamrock, it became easy to convert their knowledge of the shamrock to the magic of the trinity. The three leaves are also said to stand for faith, hope & love. The four-leaf clover is a separate entity & a rarity. That is why the fourth leaf is deemed to be “lucky.” But that lucky clover is not the traditional Irish symbol. Thanks to their connection with Ireland, shamrocks are often gifted by the Prime Minister (Taoiseach) to the President of the U.S. each St. Patrick’s Day. They are presented in a special Waterford crystal bowl featuring shamrocks in the design. This practice started in 1952. Shamrocks also can be seen on Irish clothing designs, the Erin go Bragh flag & the uniforms of several Irish sports teams. Of course they also are seen during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The shamrock & Ireland will always be linked.

Useful Tips For RV Beginners Road trips are a unique way to travel that afford travelers the freedom to stop & take in sights & scenery on their own time. Traveling the highways & back roads gives people a chance to slow down & really enjoy an adventure. Such trips can be made even more special by traveling in recreational vehicles, often referred to as “RVs.” The RV industry has been consistently growing for years. The Recreational Vehicle Industry Assoc. says the RV industry creates $50 billion in economic impact in the U.S., with roughly 23,000 businesses currently in operation. More than 504 RVs were shipped in 2017, & in Canada the industry is responsible for more than $7 billion in retail sales, states RVIA & Statista. Roughly 40 million Americans go RV camping each year, & millennials make up approximately 38% of campers, according to a report from CNBC. New RV enthusiasts are getting on the road every day, & such travelers can benefit from the wisdom & experience of those who have blazed trails before them. • Budget for all RV expenses. It can be tempting to overspend on the RV itself, but buyers should factor in other expenses like hoses, wheel chocks, levelers, navigation systems, campsite fees, & more. • Consider the size of the RV. Buy the smallest RV that is comfortable. Doing so opens up more options regarding places to stay. In addition, small RVs are more easily maneuvered on the road than large ones. • Add time to your ETAs. The estimated time for trips that popular map & navigation software provide are customized to average car speeds. RVs generally move more slowly than cars, so allow for more time to arrive at your destination. This is an important consideration if you need to be at a campground by a certain time. • Save condiment packages. When visiting restaurants & carryout places, save any unused condiment packets, napkins & packages of disposable cutlery. These items take up less room than full-sized packages, & space inside RVs is often at a premium. • Invest in storage boxes. Store belongings neatly & cleanly in plastic storage containers. Choose uniformly shaped & sized bins, which are more easily stacked & stored than bins of varying sizes. • Pack a paper map. Navigation services that are powered by satellite or cell phone signals may not be available in inclement weather or when traveling through mountain ranges. • Check towing capacity. Make sure you do not exceed the manufacturer-recommended towing capacity. This is usually found on a sticker in the driver’s door. Overloading the vehicle can cause transmission issues and/or burn out engines. RVs can be a fun & relaxing way to travel, & novices can make such trips more enjoyable by following a few tips from seasoned road trippers.

Tips For Weeding Your Garden Weeding is a chore few gardeners relish. Weeds can seemingly pop up overnight. And when left to their own devices, weeds can quickly grow out of control. There are a few key tips to weeding that can make the process easier. First off, start with wet soil. Choose to weed after it rains, as wet soil makes it easier to pull the full weed, including the root, out of the ground. Removing the weed all the way down to its root prevents it from growing back. If there’s no rain in the forecast, water the garden before attempting to remove weeds. If the ground is compacted & you’re weeding in a pinch, at least remove the head of the weed to prevent seeds from spreading & starting new weed growth Want to learn other Garden Basics? Spring is eagerly anticipated, as many people look forward to enjoying the great outdoors once more. Spring is also a special time of year for practicing Christians. Beginning on Ash Wednesday & lasting 40 weekdays until the arrival of Easter Sunday, the Lenten season is a very important time of year for Christians. During Lent, Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, self-denial, & spiritual discipline. While the Bible does not reference Lent, the practice of observing Lent has become a standard. The following focuses on each of the special days of this church season as they pertain to Western Christianity. Ash Wednesday - The Day of Ashes commemorates the repentance of sin. Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, & those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality & sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, or abstain from eating meat. Palm Sunday - On what is now called “Palm Sunday,� Jesus Christ rode a donkey into Jerusalem while villagers welcomed him & waved palm branches. This is mentioned in each of the Biblical Gospels & occurs a week before His subsequent resurrection. The “Passion of the Christ� is typically read during Palm Sunday masses. Holy Thursday - sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,� “Maundy Thursday� or “Thursday of Mysteries.� Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body & blood of Jesus Christ. Good Friday - commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod & Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, & Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot. Holy Saturday - marks the final day of the Triduum, or the three days preceding Easter Sunday. Scripture states that Holy Saturday was when Jesus’ body was placed in the tomb. Easter Sunday - A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, & Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. Directions 1. Heat large skillet or grill pan over medium heat. 2 Pat fish fillets dry with clean towel, rub chili powder & cumin onto both sides of fillets. 3. Spray nonstick cooking spray onto heated skillet or grill pan. Add fillets. 4. Cook 4-5 minutes & flip fish over. Cook for additional 4-5 minutes. Fish is ready when internal temp reaches 145 degrees F & flakes with fork. 5. Cut cooked fish into bite-sized pieces. Set aside. 6. Spread green cabbage & red onion onto tortillas. Add cooked fish, top with lime juice & cilantro.

Diamond Jo Casino Trip Since the Diamond Jo Casino Trip hosted by the Keen Age Center was such a success, they are doing it again! The group will travel to Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque, IA on Wednesday, March 18th. The bus will leave from the Keen Age Center, 2141 Henry Luckow Lane, Belvidere at 8 AM sharp. You will arrive around 10 AM & leave Diamond Jo’s at 3 PM to return to the Keen Age Center. This is a 2 hour bus ride, so you will need a ride home from the Keen Age Center because it closes at 4:30 PM & there will not be any buses running when you get back. Bring your own snacks & water for the trip. The trip will cost $15 per person which includes your bus ride, tip for driver, & complimentary lunch. A photo ID is required at Diamond Jo’s. Reservations will be taken until March 13th. Please note there must be a minimum of 40 people signed up to go in order to confirm this trip. Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Assoc., found that about 85 million families in the U.S. own a pet. Pets offer companionship & unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets & being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people ages of 25-64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well & having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support & companionship that can help seniors - including those who may be divorced or widowed - feel more secure & happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents with pets, 88% said their pets helped them enjoy life, & 86% said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain & emotional distress for chronic pain patients.” • Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up & go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues & preoccupation about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, & that interaction can get seniors moving more. • Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels & lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming & other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, & may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend & purpose.
