FOR OUR SAFETY S E Y E T VO This Referendum is asking for a 1/2% increase in the Public Safety Sales Tax; this amounts to 50 cents on every $100 purchased. Except, it’s not on most purchases. This tax does not apply to purchases of groceries, medicine, autos, homes, boats, or even services like haircuts. Best of all, every traveler that buys gas or food at the Belvidere Oasis pays this tax to help keep our community safe (this amounts to almost 50% of the total revenues collected). No one has a problem making purchases in Rockford and paying this same tax to help protect Rockford residents. Ask yourself this question; “Is the safety of my family and property worth 50 cents?”
Here is the truth and why you should vote YES: • “The Board has moved money from the Public Safety fund to the general fund for years”. - FALSE - The truth is, all money for Public Safety flows from the general fund to the Public Safety budgets which include; the Sheriff’s Dept., The Jail, The Court system (including the State’s Attorney’s office, Circuit Clerk, and all other court related offices) • The County should cut funding to the Health Department and that would solve the problem. – FALSE – The Health Department does not get its funding from the general fund. The Health Department is funded by two separate levies that are separate from the general fund. • Just close the county down 1 day a week. – FALSE – Anyone who has paid attention to the local news knows this is not an option. Any reduction in the Court House hours (yes the courts are part of Public safety) would have to be approved by the Chief Judge, and based on the current case load, would never be allowed. • Simply cut all Budgets by 10% - 20%. – FALSE – The County is limited when it comes to where it can and cannot cut. The Chief Judge will not allow significant cuts to the Courts, Probation, and Circuit Clerks Office etc... If the County cuts Corrections Officers we will be forced to send prisoners to other communities to be housed, which will cost County Tax Payers $65/day (minimum) per inmate plus all transportation. • “Cut overstaffed offices ”. – WRONG – No County in the State runs leaner and more efficiently than Boone County. We have a small dedicated work force that does more with less every day. Reducing cost has been a priority since 2008.

Any Condition! 779-548-0854 Shame On This County Board & The County Boards Before Them That Refused To Balance Our Budget. It is so sad the only way our county board can balance a budget is by adding more taxes. When I read their (County Board message) or someone’s message in the Boone County Shopper last week to vote yes, at the end it seems we were kind of given an ultimatum: Vote for yet another tax increase or possibly face more property taxes. That is some of what I got out of their article. I do not do well with threats but will throw out an idea. I feel that the County Board needs to make some deep cuts. Yes, cuts hurt but you cannot continue to bully the citizens of this county with more and more taxes. Here is an idea, make a 10%-20% cut throughout all not essential departments in the County. Close them down a half a day or even a whole day during the week and cut wages accordingly. If some of the employees would leave, well that is the way it goes. I do not believe any were promised life time jobs. They (Boone County Board) whine because the revenue is not there anymore. Wind farms for example. The last County Board chairman and his cronies decided they were bad, they did not want them in our County. Maybe they are, maybe they were not bad. I feel the County Board should have put that out to the people to decide. I hope this County Board will look at our neighbor County McHenry where they cut spending nearly 12% and cut the property levy 11.2% for 2018. It has many unique qualities, so please join us on a couple of tromps through muck & mire with Josh Sage, the BCCD Natural Resources Manager. You might get wet feet, so wear knee high waterproof boots. Please dress for the weather & be prepared to walk over rough, unimproved terrain.
