Explore The History Of Veterans Day Service members make numerous sacrifices in defense of their countries. While the debts to service members may never be the kind that can be repaid in full, paying tribute to veterans, on Veterans Day & throughout the year, can be a great way to show them just how much their efforts are appreciated. Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day - Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany & the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting & establishing terms of peace. On Nov. 11, 1919, the 1st anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The U.S. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, & Nov. 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II & the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the holiday “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars. Veteran’s Day in October? According to Military.com, for a short time, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veterans Day was moved to the 4th Monday of October - the first being Oct. 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veterans Day to Nov. 11 beginning in 1978. Since then, parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts, & other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on Nov. 11. Veterans around the world - Many countries, including the U.S., celebrate veterans on or near Nov. 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also Nov. 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the 2nd Sunday of November. Remembrance Day also is called Poppy Day, when people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty. Paying tribute - There are various ways to honor veterans on Veterans Day & Remembrance Day. Federal government closings, educational efforts in schools, parades, & visits to military hospitals or cemeteries may take place. In Europe, it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 AM every Nov. 11. Veterans Day & its sister holidays mark the honoring of veterans of all wars, with a particular focus on living veterans. It is a day to celebrate the dedication & selflessness of hardworking military men & women.

TIRED OF LIVING IN PAIN?

SENIOR LIVING A MONTHLY FOUR PAGE SECTION FOR SENIORS

Questions Older Drivers Can Ask Themselves To See If It’s Still Safe To Drive Men & women know that adjustments must be made as they get older. Athletes nearing their golden years may not be able to push themselves as hard at the gym as they once did. Professionals nearing retirement age might not be able to pull long hours at the office like they used to. But aging affects more than just work & play. As men & women age, their ability to perform everyday tasks, including driving, may diminish as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, as people age, certain changes they experience can affect their ability to safely operate an automobile. Changes in eyesight, physical fitness & reflexes may require aging drivers to reassess their skills behind the wheel. The NHTSA notes that drivers can ask themselves the following questions as they try to assess their driving abilities. How is my eyesight? The American Optometric Assoc. notes that vision changes naturally occur as a person ages. Such changes do not necessarily mean drivers have to give up the keys to their vehicles. In fact, they may just require more routine eye examinations. The NHTSA says having trouble reading signs easily, recognizing someone from across the street, seeing streets signs & pedestrians, & handling headlight glare are common signs of age-related eye problems. Can I control my vehicle? Age-related loss of strength, coordination & flexibility can make it hard for aging men & women to control their vehicles. Some signs that drivers might be having trouble controlling their vehicles include trouble looking over shoulders to change lanes, difficulty moving foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal & difficulty turning the steering wheel. Pain in the knees, legs or ankles also can make it difficult. Does driving make me nervous, scared or overwhelmed? Drivers who feel confused by traffic signs & traffic (including pedestrian traffic) should stop driving until they can discuss the issue with their physicians. Medication can sometimes make drivers feel sleepy or confused, & some aging drivers even find themselves overwhelmed in otherwise normal driving situations. Are my loved ones concerned about my driving? Aging drivers may feel offended when family members question their ability to drive. However, the NHTSA notes that sometimes other people notice things about a person’s driving that the person does not. The concern expressed by loved ones should not be taken lightly. Do I drive with passengers? Drivers who routinely drive with passengers, especially young children, carry extra responsibility. Such drivers owe it to themselves & their passengers to honestly assess their driving abilities. Various remedies can address age-related driving issues, & drivers should discuss them with their doctors the moment they feel as though their skills behind the wheel are starting to diminish.

Aside from the occasional sandwich, many people think turkey is solely for the Thanksgiving dinner table. However, turkey is much more than a holiday centerpiece. Anyone concerned about healthy eating would be wise to learn more about the health benefits of turkey & find ways to include it in their diets throughout the year. Turkey is low in fat & high in protein, making it an important source of nutrition. One piece of turkey breast without the skin is 160 calories, four grams of fat & a whopping 30 grams of protein, according to the USDA Nutrient Data Lab. Dark meat & turkey legs are higher in calories but boast similar amounts of protein. The average portion of turkey is 100 grams, or 3.5 oz. This is about the size & thickness of a deck of cards. A single serving of turkey can provide around 65 % of the recommended daily intake of protein. But turkey is more than just a low fat source of protein. The meat is rich in niacin (B3), which may help increase HDL cholesterol, widely known as the “good form of cholesterol. Niacin, in addition to helping balance cholesterol levels, can lower a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease by reducing atherosclerosis, which is a hardening of the arteries. The resource Healthline also says niacin may help reduce inflammation & symptoms of arthritis. Turkey also is rich in vitamins B6 & B12. B6 helps keep red blood cells healthy & reduce fatigue, while B12 can decrease levels of homocysteine that can contribute to cognitive decline. Turkey is a good source of selenium, which helps to keep hair & nails healthy while serving as an immune system booster. Around 20% of the recommended daily amount of selenium can be obtained from a single serving of turkey. Turkey is lower in calories & fat & higher in protein than chicken. Those who routinely consume chicken as part of a healthy diet can substitute it for turkey for even greater nutritional benefits. Turkey is particularly low in saturated fat, which may contribute to increased levels of the LDL, or “bad, cholesterol. Turkey can be baked, boiled, stir-fried, grilled, ground, chopped for salads, & sliced for sandwiches. Home chefs often find they can substitute turkey for any meat in a recipe with good results. Turkey is much more than a Thanksgiving staple & can be enjoyed in various ways throughout the year.

The rise of craft & home brewing has created more beer flavor profiles than ever before. In fact, there’s likely a beer for everyone, whether you’re a novice or connoisseur. While wine will always have its enthusiasts, beer is fast on its heels as a popular mealtime beverage. Much in the way wines are paired with certain foods, it has become the natural course of action to pair certain foods with particular styles of beer. “Beer is a great match for food because of the complexity of its flavors, its ability to provide refreshment & to interact with many food flavors,â€? says Marc Stroobandt, a master beer sommelier for the Food & Beer Consultancy, UK. Although each person has his or her preferences, here is a brief listing of generalized pairings, courtesy of the Brewer’s Assoc. & CraftBeer.com. • American Amber Lager: Creamy risotto, wild rice, polenta • Belgian-style Dubbel: Pork chops, sausage, tenderloin • Blonde Ale: Chicken, salads, salmon, nutty cheese • Hefeweizen: Weisswurst, seafood, sushi • IPA: Spicy foods, curries

• American Pale Ale: Game birds, such as duck and quail • Belgian-style Flanders: Grilled ribeye, root vegetables • Dark Lager: Barbecue, sausage, roasted meat • Imperial Stout: Smoked goose, foie gras, strong cheeses • Porter: Roasted or smoked foods, blackened fish

The Brewer’s Assoc. recommends matching delicate dishes with delicate beers & strong dishes with assertive beers. Commonalities, like aromas & sub-flavors, also work together. A beer with roasted notes may pair well with chocolate, for example. Opposites also attract, a spicy food may taste best when paired with a sweet beer. Pairing might once have been limited to matching wines with certain foods. But the booming craft beer business has popularized pairing flavorful beers with foods to make meals even tastier.

Learning The Subtleties Of Dementia & Alzheimer’s The terms “dementia” & “Alzheimer’s disease” are often used interchangeably. However, the Alzheimer’s Association notes it is important to understand the subtle distinctions that make dementias unique. What is dementia? Dementia is a general term that refers to a decline in mental ability that’s severe enough to interfere with a person’s daily life. There are many types of dementia, which describes a group of symptoms associated with a decline in memory, reasoning or other thinking skills. Types of dementias can include vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy Body dementia, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, among others. What is Alzheimer’s disease? A degenerative brain disease caused by complex changes in the brain after its cells have been damaged. The Alzheimer’s Assoc. notes that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of cases. Symptoms tend to gradually worsen over time. What are the symptoms of dementia? Most types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, affect memory & thinking skills. However, depending on the dementia classification, they manifest themselves in different ways. Before doctors can diagnose a type of dementia, they must see that at least two of the following core mental functions are significantly impaired: Memory, communication & language, ability to focus & pay attention, reasoning & judgment, visual perception. People with dementia may struggle with short-term memory & everyday tasks like paying bills, cooking for themselves & remembering appointments. Alzheimer’s disease in particular causes a slow decline in memory, thinking & reasoning skills. Alzheimer’s symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for normal signs of aging. However, the Alzheimer’s Assoc. urges people who notice any of these 10 early signs & symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease to report them to their physician. • Memory loss that disrupts daily life • Challenges in planning or solving problems • Difficulty completing familiar tasks • Confusion with time or place • Trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships • Decreased or poor judgment • New problems with words in speaking or writing • Withdrawal from work or social activities • Misplacing things & losing the ability to retrace steps • Changes in mood or personality Any changes in memory, communication & cognition should be addressed by a professional. There are subtle distinctions between dementias, & getting a diagnosis right early on can help doctors design an effective treatment plan. Learn more at www.alz.org.
