Simple Ways To Lower Your Risk For Type 2 Diabetes A healthy lifestyle can help people live life to the fullest. There are many components to a healthy lifestyle, & few may be as influential as prevention. Preventive measures to reduce one’s risk for various diseases can have a long-lasting effect, helping people maintain their independence well into their golden years. A proactive approach can improve the chances men & women will get to spend their retirement years doing what they enjoy. One disease that can be especially limiting is type 2 diabetes. According to the National Institute on Diabetes & Digestive Kidney Diseases, diabetes occurs when blood glucose levels are too high. Blood glucose, sometimes referred to as “blood sugar,” comes from the foods a person eats & is the main source of energy for his or her body. Insulin helps glucose from food get into the body’s cells so they can use it for energy. However, in certain instances, such as when a person has type 2 diabetes, the body does not make enough - or any - insulin. When that occurs, glucose stays in the blood, never reaching the cells it’s supposed to help. The NIDDK notes that, over time, excessive levels of glucose in the blood can cause a host of health problems. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, occurs when the body does not make or use insulin well. While it might seem as though people are helpless to stop this, the NIDDK notes that type 2 diabetes can be delayed or even prevented. In fact, the NIDDK cites three key ways that people can lower their risk. • Lose weight & keep extra pounds off. People should speak with their physicians about their body weights to determine if they’re currently overweight or obese or maintaining healthy weights. If the doctor suggests losing weight, doing so can help prevent or delay diabetes. Each individual is different, but the NIDDK notes that losing between 5 & 7 percent of your starting weight may help delay or prevent diabetes. • Become more physically active. The NIDDK lists a sedentary lifestyle among the many factors that can increase a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes. By embracing physical activity, getting at least 30 minutes of exercise five days per week, people can delay or prevent diabetes. People who have been physically inactive for a long period of time should ask their physicians to recommend appropriate activities that can help their bodies adjust to being physically active. • Eat less & eat healthy. A diet that’s high in vitamins & nutrients can help people delay or prevent type 2 diabetes. Small portions can help people control their caloric intake, reducing obesity. Prevention is a great way for people to reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes, a potentially debilitating yet often preventable disease.
SwedishAmerican Offers Dexa Screenings Osteoporosis is a crippling disease characterized by the loss of bone tissue & a susceptibility to fractures. It afflicts an estimated 25 million Americans, 80% of whom are women. Depending on your family history, fracture risk medications or other health issues, your health care provider may recommend you schedule a Dexa screening. A Dexa is done in areas of the hip & spine - areas that could alter your life if you were to fracture. It safely, accurately & painlessly measures bone density & the mineral content of the bone. The patient lies comfortably on a padded table, fully clothed, while the Dexa unit scans the spine & hip. Dexa is a non-invasive procedure, involves no injections, & takes approximately 10-15 minutes. To schedule your appointment at SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere, 1625 South State Street in Belvidere, call 1-779-696-7676.

Vaccines Are Not Just For Kids! It is recommended that adults get vaccines to prevent serious diseases like influenza, shingles & hepatitis. Protect yourself. Check with your doctor about what vaccines you need today. Here is some general information provided by the Center for Disease Control & Prevention about the shingles virus & vaccines. Shingles is a painful rash that usually develops on one side of the body, often the face or torso. The rash consists of blisters that typically scab over in 7 to 10 days and clears up within 2 to 4 weeks. Some people describe the pain as an intense burning sensation. For some people, the pain can last for months or even years after the rash goes away. This longlasting pain is called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), and it is the most common complication of shingles. Your risk of getting shingles and PHN increases as you get older. Two vaccines are licensed & recommended to prevent shingles in the U.S. Zoster vaccine live (ZVL, Zostavax) has been in use since 2006. Recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV, Shingrix), has been in use since 2017 and is recommended by ACIP as the preferred shingles vaccine. Zostavax may still be used to prevent shingles in healthy adults 60 years & older.
Keep Pets Cool, Comfortable & Safe During Hot Weather Summer may be a time for vacations & recreational activities for human beings, but pets may not be privy to the same luxuries. Summer recreation may not always include our four-legged friends, as summer heat & other issues can pose a threat to companion animals. As a result, pet parents must make pet safety a priority when the weather heats up. The Humane Society of the U.S. says that the summer months can be uncomfortable & dangerous for pets. Temperatures that may be tolerable for adults & children who are dressed accordingly may not be so for animals covered in fur. It’s vital to help pets stay comfortable & safe as summer temperatures heat up. • Practice vehicle safety. It is NEVER acceptable to leave pets in parked cars, even for a minute. Temperatures inside vehicles can rise quickly & considerably in a matter of minutes, even with the windows opened slightly. HSUS says on an 85-degree-day, temperatures inside parked cars can reach 102 F within 10 minutes. Pets can suffer irreversible & even fatal organ damage in that period of time. • Stay off of hot asphalt. If you’ve ever walked on the hot sand or an asphalt driveway on a hot day, you understand just how scorching those surfaces can get. Dogs & cats do not have protective shoes to wear, so safeguard the delicate pads of their paws by keeping companion animals off of hot surfaces. Schedule walks in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler. • Schedule a pet grooming visit. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation suggests speaking with your veterinarian to see if it’s appropriate for your pet to get clipped shorter or to be shaved in the summer. But a fur coat can offer protection from the sun, so weigh the pros & cons before taking action. Apply a pet safe sunscreen to your dog’s skin if he or she has a thin coat. • Provide a way for pets to cool off. Offer a means for pets too cool off, such as a wading pool when you are outside. Offer plenty of fresh water. Keep pets who do not enjoy the heat indoors with the air conditioner running. • Look for indicators of heat stress. The American Veterinary Assoc. says heat stress is marked by heavy panting, dry or bright red gums, thick drool, vomiting, diarrhea, or wobbly legs. Move pets exhibiting such symptoms to a cool place, drape a damp towel over them, rewetting the cloth frequently, & get them to a vet. • Exercise caution in the water. Dogs can get swept away by rip currents just like human swimmers. If you will be boating, invest in a life jacket for your pooch & look for water hazards, such as currents, sink holes, & bluegreen algae in lakes & ponds.

Various Ways To Repurpose Dressers One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money & provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Here are a few ideas to get started. • Television stand: Sand & paint or stain the dresser to match the color scheme of your room. Remove the top row of drawers from the dresser to have cubby space to house electronics, such as cable boxes or DVD players. The remaining drawers can hold movie collections, remote controls, gaming systems, & more. • Serving bar: Paint the dresser in an eye-catching shade & make sure to seal-coat it with a finish that is impervious to moisture. If time or budget allows, attach a piece of glass or tiles on top of the dresser to create a water-resistant area. Store serving glasses & cocktail accouterments within the drawers. Place a few bottles of your favorite spirits & a decanter on a decorative tray. • Storage shelving: Remove the drawers & turn it into a storage mecca by using stackable plastic containers in spaces once occupied by the drawers. Keep craft supplies, collectibles or anything else you can think of inside. • Kitchen island: Small dressers can be repurposed into kitchen islands with a few modifications. Install casters on the feet so it can be moved around when necessary. Place butcher block wood or stone on top so you’ll have a sturdy cutting or preparation surface area. Hooks hung on the side can hold frequently used kitchen utensils. • Bench: Remove the top drawers from the dresser. Add a piece of plywood to make a seat. Use the removed drawer faces on the inside back of the dresser since this area will now be visible. Paint the entire piece or stain it as desired. Fashion a cushion for the seat, & the bench is ready for an entryway or wherever you have space. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture. The arrival of cooler weather marks a prime time to plant bulbs that will bloom come spring & summer. Bulbs should be planted as soon as the ground is cool, ideally when temperatures average between 40 & 50 F. Just be sure to plant bulbs at least six weeks before the ground freezes for optimal success. Always follow the bulb distributor’s guidelines for planting, including suggestions regarding spacing and soil depth. Remove any weeds and loosen the soil to get started. In addition, think about mixing in compost or other organic matter to enrich the soil if it lacks nutrients.

Simple Ways To Incorporate More Fruits & Vegetables Into Your Diet The importance of making fruits & vegetables a routine part of one’s daily diet is hard to overstate. Children might be seen as the most resistant to fruits & vegetables, but reports indicate they’re not alone. A 2017 report from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention found that just 12% of adults in the U.S. are meeting the standards for fruit consumption as established by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Even fewer people (9%) are meeting the standard for vegetables. That’s unfortunate, as fruits & vegetables have been linked to a host of health benefits.

Why eat fruits & vegetables? The U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that fruits do not contain cholesterol & are naturally low in fat, sodium & calories. In addition, fruits contain a host of essential nutrients, including potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C, & folate, that are historically under consumed. Similarly, studies have shown that vegetables, which also are great sources of vitamins & minerals, can help people reduce their risk for a variety of conditions, including heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. How can I include more fruits and vegetables in my diet? Routine is a big part of many people’s lives, & some may find it hard to change their dietary routines. But people who aren’t eating enough fruits & vegetables likely don’t need to completely overhaul their diets in order to include more fruits & vegetables. In fact, the American Heart Assoc. notes that the following are some easy ways for people to sneak more fruits & vegetables into their diets. • Breakfast: When sitting down for a bowl of cereal, add some bananas, raisins or berries to your bowl. When making eggs or breakfast potatoes, add chopped up onions, celery, green or red bell peppers, or spinach. • Lunch: Forgo sandwiches in favor of fruit or vegetable salads at lunchtime. If you must have a sandwich, top it off with vegetables like cucumbers, sprouts, tomatoes, lettuce, and/or avocado. • Dinner: Replace less healthy side dishes with fruit or vegetable salads, & don’t forget to include steamed vegetables, even frozen ones, on your dinner plate every night. Add chopped vegetables, such as onions, garlic & celery, when creating soups, stews or sauces. Some simple strategies can help you eat more fruits & vegetables & reap the many rewards such foods provide.
