My name is Sarah Turnipseed, candidate for Belvidere City Clerk. I was appointed City Clerk on January 6, 2020. Prior to my appointment, I served as the assistant to the City Clerk for almost 10 years. The City Clerk is an important position that many people might not fully understand. It’s a position that requires tremendous organization & knowledge of the inner workings of the City. As City Clerk, I have many obligations & duties - such as serving as the official record keeper for the City. In addition, my office handles payroll for City employees, including the library. I also oversee human resources & serve as the local registrar for birth & death certificates in Boone County. The City Clerk’s office is also responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, maintaining the city website, all business licenses including liquor & video gaming. This is more than a full-time job. This year’s election is important for many reasons. Our Deputy Clerk is retiring in May & continuity in our office is imperative moving forward. My opponent, who has run for City Clerk twice unsuccessfully, states that everyone is replaceable. That might be the case in a small office, but not in Belvidere where so much depends on the City Clerk’s office. Born & raised in Belvidere, I have a deep love for family & smalltown America. I believe Belvidere embodies this spirit with its friendly, family-oriented atmosphere. I live in town with my husband, Dan, and we are the proud parents of five children & our first grandchild. Jack is a senior at Belvidere High School and is the Captain of the Belvidere Fury hockey team and currently works at Belvidere Ace Hardware. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, & would play with the hearts of mortals & gods, sometimes leaving mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, & capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating & sinister - forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in & out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows & falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, & through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid & accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does & achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man & child through Renaissance art & beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th & 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century, when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid.

Dear Friends, I spoke with my mother today about how vaccines were being distributed where she lives in Western Illinois. The conclusion was that it was not different there from how we were struggling here in Northern Illinois. Earlier in the day I talked to a coworker that was struggling to help assist his parents where they live in Illinois. My mom considers herself techsavvy “enough” to get by & she was super frustrated with the system to try to get the COVID-19 vaccine. My coworker is more than tech-savvy enough & he was struggling. Sound familiar? We get loads of calls & emails about this very issue. I gauge our work by the simple standard of “how would I want someone to treat my mom?” Trust that I love her dearly & want the best for her! I also want the same for the seniors of Boone County. The number one issue right now is staying informed. To this end we have partnered with the Boone County Health Dept. (BCHD). Every Tuesday at 10:30 AM we have a live conference call with BCHD staff for information specific to COVID-19 vaccine distribution for those age 65+. See the information included on this page to access the call. If you cannot be on the live call at that time, we will post a recording of the call that can be accessed at any time. Additionally, we are putting plans in place to help seniors get registered for appointments when the time comes. I got my COVID-19 vaccination. Now what? Can I get on a plane, or visit my family? Do I still need to wear my mask? Coronavirus vaccines are the light at the end of a very dark tunnel - a pandemic that resulted in 2 million fatalities around the world & over 420,000 in the U.S. The good & bad news: While the light may be closer as more people get vaccinated, the end of the tunnel is still far away - even for those who have received a vaccine. Do I need to continue to wear a mask, even after I have been fully vaccinated? Even if you’ve been fully vaccinated, it’s important to continue to wear a face mask & practice social distancing in public settings like supermarkets, restaurants & transportation where you’re likely to encounter more people who haven’t been vaccinated & could potentially get infected by you. If I have been vaccinated, can I eat inside restaurants now? Because diners typically don’t wear masks inside restaurants, there is a greater chance that you or another person will come in contact with respiratory droplets that can transmit coronavirus. Outdoor dining is considerably safer than indoor dining, health experts contend, because virus-containing droplets have more room to disperse. It may also be easier to space tables more than six feet apart outdoors. Is it OK to get on a plane? Round-trip domestic flights on average were 25% cheaper last year than 2019, according to travel website Hopper. Prices are expected to go up later this year as more people get vaccinated, according to travel experts. If you’ve been fully vaccinated, you don’t necessarily need to pass up on travel steals. There are some that feel it would be safe if you are vaccinated, while others say, “It’s like fuel for the fire”. Can I visit my grandparents now that I’m vaccinated? Coronavirus has taken a disproportionate toll on elderly people, especially those who live in long-term care facilities. Their documented vulnerability & susceptibility to contracting & potentially dying from coronavirus is why they are receiving priority access to the vaccine. That’s why many nursing homes during the height of the pandemic banned visitors & people stopped interacting with elderly people in person. Likewise, Ashley Ritter, a geriatric nurse practitioner &postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, said she’ll feel more comfortable visiting her dad who is immunocompromised &d recently had a kidney transplant once she is fully vaccinated. Ultimately, a return to normal hinges upon getting as many people vaccinated as possible. Health professionals say a vaccination rate of 70% - 80% would be close to bringing about herd immunity, where those who have the vaccine help prevent those who are not vaccinated from contracting the virus.

The human body & its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria & viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue & swelling can occur - the natural side effects of an immune system response - but will soon dissipate. However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present. This is the problem with many chronic diseases & immune system dysfunction. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, & processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods & beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation. These include: • tomatoes • olive oil • green leafy vegetables & cruciferous vegetables • fatty fish • berries • nuts, like almonds & walnuts • avocados • green tea • peppers • grapes • turmeric • dark chocolate Including these foods in your daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating & fatigue associated with inflammation. It is important to speak with a doctor before making any dietary changes. Discuss any inflammation issues you have been having & which foods might help. Generally speaking, a diet full of diverse, antioxidant-rich foods can provide relief for those with various levels of inflammation.

Medication labeling & package inserts typically use metric units to correlate dose to a person’s physical attributes. Individuals should know their info in metric & be honest with themselves. • Use medications correctly. It is important not to chew nonchewable pills or cut pills unless the pharmacist or doctor has said it is safe. Accurate dosing also requires using the right spoon or syringe, not silverware. The final weeks of winter, & even the first few weeks of spring, are still chilly in many parts of the world. However, late winter is a great time to begin preparing gardens for the coming planting season. Gardens may have to withstand months of harsh weather each winter & such conditions can take a toll. Consider the following tips as you try to restore your gardens & get them ready for spring planting. • Disinfect your tools. It’s common to clean tools in late fall. But cleaning & disinfecting are not necessarily the same thing. If tools were not disinfected in the fall, disinfect them before doing any work on the garden. Doing so can ensure any lingering bacteria or fungi on tool surfaces are killed prior to the beginning of gardening season. According to the University of Minnesota Extension, plant pathogens, including bacteria & viruses, can be transferred to & infect plants through bits of soil & plant debris left on shovels & pruner blades. Thoroughly disinfecting such tools prior to using them in the spring is a great way to reduce the risk of disease in your garden. • Clear debris from garden beds. Leaves, twigs, sticks, & other debris may have gathered in the garden over the winter. Such debris can inhibit the growth of plants & vegetables, so make sure all of it is removed prior to planting. Weeds might even begin to sprout up in late winter & early spring, remove them before they go to seed. • Test the soil. Testing the soil prior to planting can help gardeners determine what their gardens will need to thrive in the coming months. Garden centers & home improvement stores sell home testing kits that are effective & easy to use. Once you have results, speak with your local garden center about the best time to amend the soil. • Loosen compacted soil. Soil can become compacted over winter. If soil is not loosened prior to planting, plants will have a hard time getting the water & nutrients they need. This also provides another opportunity to inspect the garden for any underlying issues, such as fungi or weed growth, that you may have missed. Late winter is a good time to assess & address any issues that developed so plants can thrive come spring.

Teresa “Teri” Ann Snow, 66, of Belvidere, IL, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL. Daughter of the late Laverne and Margaret (Bennett) Nelson, she was born on Thursday, August 26, 1954 in Rockford, IL. She married the love of her life, Dan Snow, on Saturday, October 12, 2002 at St. James Catholic Church in Belvidere, IL. Teri attended St. James Catholic School and Belvidere High School, graduating with the class of 1972. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Belvidere, IL. She was very active in her community and would attend public meetings with her husband. Teri is loved and will be deeply missed by her beloved husband, Dan; son, Sebastian Snow; brother, Larry (Carol) Nelson; sister, Sandra Pease. She was preceded in death by her parents, Laverne and Margaret; brothers, Greg Nelson, Ted Nelson. There will be a visitation from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Belvidere Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A funeral mass will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at St. James Catholic Church in Belvidere, IL. Interment will take place in Highland Garden of Memories in Belvidere, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Vincent dePaul. Donations can be dropped off at St. James Catholic Church in Belvidere, IL.
