Women recognize the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, which includes conducting self-exams to detect for breast cancer. Breast self-exams are vital to discovering abnormalities, including lumps or tenderness, in the breasts. Self-examination increases the chances of early detection of breast cancer. John Hopkins Medical Center states that 40 percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump. Doctors urge women to conduct monthly self-exams to familiarize themselves with the look and feel of their breasts, which enables them to more readily recognize any abnormalities that may indicate illness. There are a number of ways to conduct a breast self-exam, and women are urged to find the method they feel is most comfortable for them. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., offers these tips for conducting a breast examination at home. • Examine breasts in the shower. A breast examination can take place in the shower while you are washing. The shower is a convenient place to conduct an exam since you already have removed your clothes. NBCF says you should use the pads of your fingers and move around your entire breast in a circular pattern, moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month for any lumps, thickening or hardened knots. If you find a lump, visit your physician for an evaluation. • Conduct an examination in bed. The breast tissue will naturally distribute over your chest wall and ribs when you are lying down. NBCF advises you to place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit. Squeeze the nipple and check for discharge or lumps. Then repeat the process on the left breast. • Conduct a visual examination. Standing in front of the mirror, you can look at your breasts with your hands at your side and over your head. Look for any differences between breasts. Many women find that their breasts are not exactly the same shape or size, but unusual dimpling or taut or thick skin may be indicative of a problem. Should any lumps or abnormalities be discovered during an examination, a woman should not panic but schedule an appointment with her doctor for a more thorough examination, which may include a mammogram or ultrasound to map out images of the breast that may be hidden to the naked eye. Breast self-examinations are an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Early detection of breast cancer vastly improves survival rates, and self-examination is often the most effective way to detect breast cancer early on.

Reduce Cold-Weather Fire Risk
Plenty of things heat up when the temperature drops, including the risk for fire hazards. Fireplaces, stoves, heating systems, candles, & even electric lights are used more often during the winter than any other time of year, so it makes sense that the risk of home fires increases when the mercury drops. The U.S. Fire Administration says 905 people die in winter home fires each year. Cooking is the leading cause of all home fires & contributes to around $2 billion in property loss each year. Understanding potential risks & exercising caution can help homeowners protect themselves, their families & their homes from fire. Cooking - Home heating fires peak between the hours of 6 & 8 PM, when many people are home preparing dinner. The following steps, courtesy of the American Red Cross, can improve safety in the kitchen & reduce the likelihood of a home fire. • Never leave cooking food unattended, as it can take just seconds for fires to ignite. • Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stove or other appliances that generate heat. • Clean regularly to prevent grease buildup. • Make sure appliances are turned off before leaving the room or going to bed. Heating - The National Fire Protection Association warns that heating is the second leading cause of home fires, deaths & injuries in the United States. The NFPA offers these safety guidelines. • Install heating appliances according to manufacturers’ instructions or have a professional do the installation. • Fuel-burning equipment needs to vent to the outside. • Never use an oven to heat a home. • Keep anything that can burn away from heating equipment, including portable space heaters. • Clean and inspect heating appliances regularly. • Turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed. Electric - The National Safety Council estimates that 600-1,000 people die each year from electrocution. Electricity also can contribute to home fires. The Energy Education Council offers these safety suggestions. • Never force plugs into outlets. • Check that cords are not frayed or cracked. Do not run cords under carpets or place them in high-traffic areas. • Use extension cords only on a temporary basis. • Make sure light bulbs are the proper wattage for fixtures. • Install ground fault circuit interrupters in kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, & elsewhere, and test them regularly. • Check periodically for loose wall receptacles & loose wires. Listen for popping or sizzling sounds behind walls. Home fires are no joke and can be prevented with simple safety checks.
Safety First When Traveling With Pets Pets’ love is unconditional, so it’s no wonder that pet parents want to keep their beloved animals by their side as much as possible. Pet owners whose pets spend ample time in the car should brush up on some safety precautions to ensure the roadways are safe for all travelers, including those covered in fur. Driving while distracted is a significant safety concern. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety notes that simply taking one’s eyes off the road for two seconds doubles the chances of being involved in a crash. Recent data from Kurgo, a leading supplier of quality dog travel supplies & accessories, found that 60% of respondents had driven with pets in the last month, & more than half admitted to being distracted by their pets. Although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does not track how many accidents are attributed to pets, it’s easy to see how pets can be a distraction on the road. Drivers should never allow their pets to sit on their laps or ride in vehicles unrestrained. This puts all passengers, pets & humans, in danger. A 10 lb. dog that’s not restrained can generate 500 lbs. of force in a 50 mph crash. Pet owners can heed these safety guidelines to make trips with their pets less dangerous. • Recognize that airbags can cause injury. Airbags are designed to protect people, not pets. It’s always recommended that pets ride in the back seat or the storage area of an SUV in vehicles equipped with airbags. • Watch those windows. Although riding with their heads out of the car window is a quintessential image of dogs in car, such situations put dogs in danger. Fast-blowing debris or litter can injure the dog, & heavy airflow can damage the animal’s respiratory system, warn veterinarians. Dogs also may attempt to jump out. • Invest in a restraint system. These keep pets safe. Small dogs may benefit from being inside crates that are secured to the vehicle. Harnessing a pooch is another option, & many connect directly to seat belts. Dog gates can be installed between the back seat & storage area, which is great when traveling with multiple dogs. • Avoid truck beds. The American Humane Society says pets should never be transported in the bed of pickup trucks. Dogs should only ride in pickup trucks with extended cabs that allow their owners to secure them in the backseat. Keeping passengers, including both people and pets, safe in vehicles is the responsibility of drivers.

Preserve Carved Pumpkins Jack-o’-lanterns and other carved pumpkin designs are frequently the centerpieces of Halloween festivities. The twinkling lights & orange glow of jack-o’-lanterns can add ambiance to any autumn event. The trouble with carving pumpkins is that most people want to do it right away, only to discover their pumpkins wilt and decay long before Halloween. Nothing ruins Halloween more than visiting a home to trick-or-treat & not getting candy. Equally disappointing is a sad pumpkin display withering away on a front porch. Even though all pumpkins will eventually rot, certain tips can keep carvings from collapsing too soon. • Choose a sturdy pumpkin. Inspect the pumpkin of your choosing carefully, looking for gouges, spots & holes. Even a small blemish can quickly expand into a mushy mess. Select pumpkins with even color & firm flesh, & make sure that the pumpkin doesn’t feel tender when you push on the skin. • Visit local pumpkin stands. Pumpkins that have been shipped miles & miles in hot cargo trucks may be overly ripened or battered. Pumpkins grown nearby may be fresher & buying pumpkins locally supports local farmers. • Scrape the insides of the pumpkin thoroughly. Any moist bits inside the pumpkin will mold quickly. The pumpkin carving experts at Pumpkin Masters recommend scraping as much of the “gutsâ€? out as possible, leaving about a one-inch thickness of the wall of the pumpkin. • Coat the pumpkin. Preservation methods may aim to keep the pumpkin hydrated & inhibit mold & other microbial growth. Commercially sold pumpkin preservation products, such as Pumpkin FreshÂŽ, hold up well. Soaking & spraying carved pumpkins with a bleach-and-water solution also seems to preserve designs. • Keep it out of the elements. Store carved pumpkins in a cool, dry place. This will help slow down the rotting process for pumpkins exposed to outdoor fungi, other microbes & warm sunlight. • Use an artificial light source. Reduce the heat inside the pumpkin & encourage hydration by selecting a battery-powered light instead of a lit candle to illuminate the carving.

City of Belvidere SOUTH SIDE STORM WATER PLANNING STUDY
Public Open House The City of Belvidere is hosting a public open house for resident input on drainage and flooding issues in areas of the City south of the Kishwaukee River. Flood prone areas and drainage issues within those areas are being studied to develop conceptual improvement plans to reduce the occurrence and severity of storm water impacts. The first step in the process is to gather information from those impacted and knowledgeable of local drainage problems. The Open House will be from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Monday, October 9th at City Hall, 401 Whitney Boulevard. Please join City Staff in this relaxed open forum to provide your input and any photos you may have of storm water issues. Time for input, questions and discussion will be provided after a brief overview of the study plan.
