ATTENTION BOONE COUNTY RESIDENTS! Dear Community Member: Boone County is an amazing place to live and visit. We have much to be proud of. Consider just the recent history: Founded in 1964, the Boone County Conservation District was the first conservation district in Illinois. Today, the district manages over 3,000 acres of prairie, woodlands and wetlands. From a city that was still recovering from the devastating tornado of 1967 emerged Judi Ford, Miss America 1969. More recently, we can boast of Jeanne Gang, literally a world-renowned architect. Alpine Bank, one of the largest and finest banks in the area, was born in Belvidere. Poplar Grove State Bank, also ranked with the finest, is a child of Boone County as well. Both banks have been exceptional supporters of the community. In Manley Motors and Jack Wolf, we have two of the largest and most well respected auto dealerships in Northern Illinois. Evolving from Green Giant to General Mills, another hometown business has been very successful. The Boone County Fair is acknowledged by everyone as the finest county fair in the State. From the football powerhouses of the 1980s and 1990s to the continued excellence in academics and athletics of all three of today’s extremely successful high schools, we have every reason to be proud of the education given our children. We can boast having had one of the longest serving sheriffs in the history of Illinois, and still have one of the longest serving police chiefs in the history of Illinois. Our churches. Our parks. The City of Murals. The Community Building. The Ida Public Library. The Keen Age Center. The Boone County Community Foundation. The District 100 Foundation for Excellence in Education. The District 100 Charitable Foundation which oversees the Community Cupboard Food Pantry. The Belvidere Boone County Food Pantry. The Boone County Arts Council. Our football stadiums. Our locally owned McDonald’s franchises. Walmart. Chrysler. The Golf Club at Timber Pointe. Edwards Apple Orchard. McEachran Homestead Winery. One of our treasures is located at the Belvidere Cemetery. The Pettit Chapel was designed by world famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. The chapel, restored by the Belvidere Junior Women’s Club, attracts large numbers of visitors to the community. Unfortunately, those visitors begin their visit at a sadly outdated and dysfunctional administration building. The office consists of two small rooms with no door between them. There is no privacy for visitors and the space simply does not accommodate the work that must be done. In addition, the maintenance shop is part of the same building and visitors are frequently treated to the sound and smell of equipment being tuned and maintained. If you have a loved one buried at the Belvidere Cemetery, you know that it is otherwise a beautiful, peaceful, extremely well-maintained cemetery. The administration building is the exception. The Belvidere Cemetery Board has resolved to replace that administration building with a more functional and up-to-date building (and a more favorable first impression of the cemetery). Please see the architect’s rendering on this same page. The new building, which will complement the design of the Pettit Chapel, will cost more than the modest budget the Cemetery Association can provide. The Cemetery Association will soon be kicking off a fundraising effort and we hope that each of you will help. The Cemetery Association is a 501(c)(3) organization and any donation will be tax deductible.
