Here are some common winter activities & how to avoid getting hurt when engaging in them. Driving - Exercise extra caution when driving on roadways during the winter, as they may contain ice or snow. All it takes is a small coating of precipitation on roadways to make driving treacherous. Wet-looking roadways may be wet, or they may be covered by ice, & it’s difficult to tell the difference with the naked eye. Always slow down & assume you are driving on ice. Make every effort to improve visibility. This includes checking windshield washer fluid levels & ensuring windshield blades are in good working order. Snow removal - Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research & Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shoveling-related injuries & medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990-2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms & hands & cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. Roof snow removal - Removing snow from a roof can be a dangerous prospect. Always use the appropriate equipment, which includes telescoping poles, rather than climbing on slippery roofs. This may be a job best left for a professional, who will have fall-arrest systems & nonslip safety boots.

Recycle Holiday Cards The holidays have come & gone, & now it is time to pack away the decorations & retire the tree for another season. It’s also time to decide what to do with the dozens of greeting cards that arrived in the mail over the last few months. According to the Greeting Card Association, around seven billion greeting cards are sold each year. Estimates suggest that roughly two billion are holiday cards that will be sent during the month of December. These cards frequently hold sentimental value. Tossing them into the trash is wasteful, & some people would rather repurpose them into something that is meaningful & creative. Many crafts, gifts & even boxes can be made from recycled Christmas cards & other greetings. With a little ingenuity & effort, it’s possible to create eye-catching items. Here are just a few ideas. * Cut the front panels off of the cards and save them in an envelope for next year. When wrapping presents, use the cards as your gift tags. * Use the front panels of cards as ornaments. Use stencils & cookie cutters to trace patterns & cut them out. Punch a hole into the top of each cut-out & attach a string to hang on a tree. * Cut the card into strips & then laminate or cover in clear contact paper. Punch a hole in the top & attach a tassel. These can be used as bookmarks. * Use cards to form paper angels that can serve as table centerpieces next year. With a few embellishments, like yarn hair & pipe-cleaner halos, these can make for some cheerful additions to your holiday decor. * Decorate inexpensive gift bags or brown paper bags with pieces of cut-up greeting cards. Now you have inexpensive wrapping materials for gifts that are also environmentally conscious. * Gather the fronts of many cards & punch holes along the edges. Use yarn to sew each card to another, creating a Christmas tapestry, place mats or other creative ideas for decorating. * Photo cards are popular greetings for the holidays. Cut out the images of families & friends from the cards & make a collage to be saved. You can look back each year & see how children have grown & changed. * Use pieces of the Christmas cards to decoupage wooden or paper boxes. Then these boxes can be given as gifts for the holidays. * Create drink coasters or trivets by cutting images out of the Christmas cards. Laminate the images & attach them to cork to serve as coasters. For trivets, attach images to ceramic tiles & coat in a heat-resistant shellac. Christmas cards do not need to be relegated to the trash can when the holiday season has ended. Such cards can be used to create crafts that will add flair to upcoming holiday seasons.

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure - Researchers took several healthy 20-somethings, put a cast on one of their legs for 2 weeks, & watched what happened. The results were what you would expect; the average subject lost 25-30% of their strength in the casted leg. What was unexpected though, was that when those same young men hit the weights to regain their lost strength, it took them over 6 weeks to regain it. That’s over three times longer than the period of immobilization! (And they were young & healthy!) The lesson here is that it is much easier to maintain your strength than to try to recover it.

Sedentary Surprise - A similar loss of strength (& additional effort to recover it) takes place when people are sedentary. With winter here, most of us find ourselves inside more & doing less activity than we would like. Before most people know it, their arms have become weaker from a lack of lifting, reaching or carrying. Their legs have lost strength because daily walking & standing activity levels have decreased. Slower, more surefooted steps in snow or ice have allowed balance muscles to get lazy. And core muscles have atrophied from more time spent sitting. If you don’t have a plan to counteract these losses during the winter, you are asking for a lot of extra work come spring. Age Plays a Role Too - To make matters worse, loss of strength becomes more significant as you age. If a 45 year-old person loses 50% of their strength, it is likely that they can still perform the majority of basic activities & life goes on. If that same person is now 70 & only loses 25% of their strength, there is a good chance that they may lose their ability to go up & down stairs, walk the grocery store, or keep up with house work. Despite the fact that strength losses become more significant with age, the lesson is that it’s still easier to maintain your strength than recover it.

Staying Fit - So how do you keep what strength you have? Taking the stairs, parking farther away while shopping, & leaving the house every day are a good start to increasing activity levels, but they are not going to get the job done. Healthy adults require a minimum of 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. That means you need to elevate your heart rate & keep it there at least 20 minutes in order to do some good. Strength training is also a key component to staying strong. Healthy adults should incorporate muscle strengthening activities at least 2 days per week. The traditional method of lifting weights works well, but performing body-weight calisthenics (push-ups or pull-ups) or heavy digging or carrying at home counts too. By the way, research shows that there is even more health benefit from additional time spent on these activities, but what is described above is the minimum. Finding Success - History has shown that when you choose fitness activities that are enjoyable, easily accessible, & have a high level of accountability, you will have the most success. Enjoyable in the sense that you naturally gravitate toward them. Maybe it is outdoor activity like biking, hiking, or cross country skiing. If you wish to stay indoors, find your niche at a fitness club, walk the mall at a brisk pace, or exercise to a workout video at home. Accessible in the sense that the activity is easily accessible. The fewer mental & physical obstacles that are present, the more likely you are to stay consistent with a busy schedule, bad weather or other commitments. If you choose an inside activity, make sure it is close to home or work. If an outdoor activity requires gear (skis, etc.), keep that gear in your car or by the door so you can grab & go. Accountability significantly increases your success with new activities too. Having a partner brings variety, motivation & encouragement into the picture. You are also more likely to show up for a workout when someone is waiting for you. Find the right activity now & you will thank yourself come spring. Simple Ways To Cut Back On Sodium Salt is widely relied on to give foods some added flavor. Many people may feel that unsalted foods are not as tasty as their salty counterparts, but it’s important that people of all ages understand the threat that excessive sodium consumption poses. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, kidney problems may result from excessive sodium consumption. In addition, the American Heart Association notes that excess sodium & salt in the body puts a person at risk for a host of ailments, including stroke, heart failure, stomach cancer, & osteoporosis. Cutting back on sodium should be a goal for anyone who hasn’t already done so. But the HSPH notes that people over age 50, people who have high or slightly elevated blood pressure, diabetics, & African Americans are at high risk of developing the health problems related to excessive sodium consumption. Because sodium is so prevalent, some people may think that cutting back on its consumption must be nearly impossible. However, there are some simple ways to cut back on sodium. • Ask for low-sodium recommendations when dining out. The AHA notes that the average person consumes 25% of his or her overall sodium at restaurants. Some places now require restaurants to list total sodium content alongside offerings on their menus, & diners living in such areas should choose only those meals that are low in sodium. Diners who live in areas where sodium levels are not listed on the menu can ask for low-sodium recommendations or if existing menu items can be prepared without sodium or with lower amounts of sodium. • Read labels. According to the AHA, 75% of the sodium in the average American diet comes from salt added to processed foods. Diners who have resolved to push away the salt shaker at the dinner table might still be exceeding their daily recommended sodium limits if they are eating prepackaged foods with high sodium levels. Food manufacturers use salt to give prepackaged foods longer shelf lives, so concerned diners should read labels before taking items home from the grocery store. The AHA recommends that adults consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day, you should keep that in mind when reading labels & planning meals. • Opt for low-sodium condiments. Salt is not the only condiment on restaurant or kitchen tables that can add flavor to a meal, but it’s one of the few that can have a devastating effect on long-term health. Forgo table salt when sitting down at the dinner table & opt for low-sodium condiments instead. Balsamic vinegar, horseradish & the juice of a lemon each pack a flavorful, low-sodium punch. • Read vegetable packages as well. Shoppers who do not buy fresh vegetables from the produce aisle or farmer’s market should read the packaging on canned or frozen vegetables to ensure their veggies are not being doused in salt. Some manufacturers may use salt to preserve canned & frozen veggies. Diners who do not have access to fresh vegetables or the time to buy fresh veggies each week should compare packaging on canned & frozen vegetables choose the product with the lowest amount of sodium. Sodium can make meals more flavorful, but cutting back on sodium intake can improve long-term health.
