In these difficult and unsettled times brought on by COVID-19, I suspect all of us take special comfort in some of our favorite traditions and rituals, whether enjoying a serving of “Mom’s” special recipe meatloaf or setting a nice fire in the firepit and enjoying the crackling flames while we watch the sunset. Small things, yes, but wonderful reminders of good things past.

As hunters, we also have the opportunity to look back at great times spent in the outdoors with family or friends. For many of us, such memories can be triggered by simply looking up at an honored trophy on our wall. Some nostalgic moments are fine, but we should also always look ahead.

This past winter, in writing about the Jack Steele Parker Generation Next Banquet, I noted that, “I don’t know of any other such gathering of young hunters in America. It is, in a sense, a unique snapshot on a triennial basis of what our future may well look like.” It is gratifying to see that record-book entries from young hunters climbed to 175 and that these youngsters hail from a wide cross section of America—34 states in all—and four Canadian provinces. Of note, 36 of these record-book entries were submitted by young women, a tick over 20 percent of the total.

Perhaps the silver lining to any dark cloud is that it gives us pause to consider that sunnier times lay down the trail.
