Gabrielle Wang is an award-winning Australian children’s author and illustrator born in Melbourne of Chinese heritage. She has published more than twenty books for young readers. One of Gabrielle’s most popular books, A Ghost in My Suitcase, was made into a stage play in 2018. Her most recent release is Zadie Ma and the Dog Who Chased the Moon (Penguin Random House: 2022) about a girl who writes magical stories that sometimes come true.
Gabrielle travelled extensively during her first year as Laureate reaching thousands of young people across Australia. She has visited many rural and regional communities and shared her passion for creativity with online writing and drawing experiences, and through her ‘Create with Gabi’ resources on the Australian Children’s Laureate Foundation (ACLF) website.
Gabrielle’s over-arching Laureate theme is ‘Imagine a Story’ with a focus on diversity. She believes strongly in the link between using imagination by reading, writing and drawing, and wellbeing, particularly the important role of books in the lives of young people.
‘I believe books have great power when put in the hands of the right child at the right time.
THE AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN’S LAUREATE 2022-23
Gabrielle Wang is the seventh Australian Children’s Laureate
Especially children facing challenges,’ Gabrielle says. ‘I hope by sharing stories that are a celebration of all our differences, children may find a feeling of selfacceptance from a young age.’
This was also the message shared by Gabrielle when delivering the second annual Wang Gungwu Lecture in January 2023. The lecture is broadcast on ABC Television and celebrates the deep and diverse contributions of Chinese Australians to Australian society.
As a talented artist, Gabrielle created the illustrations for her Laureate poster, bookmarks and activity book, yet another celebration of imagination and culture.
The Australian Children’s Laureate Foundation and Gabrielle are grateful to the following organisations who have supported Gabrielle’s presence at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair: The Australia Council for the Arts, the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, the Australian Publishers Association, her publisher Penguin Random House and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and organisers of the International Children’s Laureate Summit.
