CLAUDE PHIPPS, AUTHOR/SCIENTIST Just sit down and write. Allow your first draft to be terrible, because compared to the final product it probably will be. Terrible writing is often the stepping stone to better writing, and as long as you reserve any judgement for when the piece is finished, you’ll be on the right track.

JESSE WOODWARD, AUTHOR Go for your dreams. If you have a hobby or a dream, go for it. Do not let anything stand in your way and ask for help if you need it.

BRENDA STEMMLER, AUTHOR One piece of advice is to be strong with family and friends. Many thought after one book I would lose interest . However after one book I found it to be thrilling to come up with more new stories and sharing with the world.

If you have an idea try and stick with your original idea and then build your story around it. Try and envision the main character having multiple episodes.

I hope you will find your writing as fulfilling as Mine has been to me.

Every book begins with a question — a “what if,” a memory, a moment that sparks the imagination. Here, our featured author opens up about her creative process, inspirations, and the truths that guide her writing.

BC: What inspired your latest book?

A: My husband's story of struggling with stage 4 lung cancer.

BC: What part of writing brings you the most joy?

A: The part of writing that brings me the most joy is looking back on the memories.

BC: If your writing were a season, which one would it be — and why?

A: My writing would be the fall. Dark colors and time are always changing the world around us. The smallest thing can hold on for so long, even as the world changes.

Behind The Story Claude Phipps, Author of Parallel You BC: Who or what first made you fall in love with storytelling?

A: My father was always writing, and he was always a storyteller. Mom would encourage him with “Tell that one again!”. Toward his last years however everything he rewrote became less interesting, but his poems were simple and great and never changed.

BC: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned as an author?

A: Your writing can’t be perfect! Just do it, get it out there, then go back and polish it if there’s time.

BC: What’s one piece of advice you’d give aspiring writers?

A: Don’t wait until it’s perfect. Get it out there, then start a different story.

Behind The Story BC: Which character has stayed with you the longest — and why?

A: Definitely Gren. Without going into spoilers, he’s sort of the amalgamation of the type of friends I’ve garnered over the years.

I enjoyed channeling that childlike sense of naivete mixed with a capacity for violence.

BC: What inspired your latest book?

A: I’ve gone through a lot in my childhood to early twenties, and there were certain ways to express emotions and life experiences that I think can only be expressed through writing.

My genuine hope is to help someone else understand a bit of themselves a little better after reading my books.

BC: Do you have a writing ritual or routine?

A: I have a typewriter-like device that I utilize, and I have my storyboards and worldbuilding documents on the other monitor.

If I’m stuck, I reach out to friends that have a decent idea of what I’m going for and bounce ideas off of them. Otherwise when I’m stuck, I read.

A: I overcame writer's block by getting outdoors and walking on the beach. It allows me to have pure thoughts. People watching.

BC: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned as an author?

A: I am a good storyteller and it is a gift. My words are important.

BC: What’s one piece of advice you’d give aspiring writers?

A: Go for your dreams. If you have a hobby or a dream, go for it. Do not let anything stand in your way and ask for help if you need it.

CLAUDE PHIPPS, AUTHOR OF FROM GODS TO GUARDIANS

BC: What inspired your latest book?

A: A desire to make science simple to understand for most people, who freeze at the thought of physics. My Dad was like that. I gave him a multimeter and his immediate reaction was “I can’t understand that!”

BC: Do you have a writing ritual or routine?

A: Not usually. But when it’s a whole book I have to write, then I start an Excel sheet which has a goal at the end, and a minimum number of pages each day.

BC: How do you know when a story is truly finished?

A: You don’t. There will always be add-ons, and one should be grateful for the chance to do them. Let me add this: there are also times when writing seems like driving through deeper and deeper mud. You can’t figure out what they characters will do next. If this happens, quit!

LARRY J KACHIK, MD AUTHOR OF DYING WAS EASY

THE PULSE OF HIS STORY BC: Which character has stayed with you the longest — and why?

A: ZZ, Zachary Zander. I tell my stories through him. He is an amazing character.

People often ask me if I am ZZ. The answer is no. ZZ is way too cool and awesome.

Plus, I grew up, and ZZ never will.

BC: How do you know when a story is truly finished?

A: I like to tie up loose ends. Although I don’t explain every detail in my works, I like to make sure the reader knows how important items turned out. That’s when the story is almost finished. For example I was happy when I finished Dying Was Easy but a few months later I decided to create a series. So until I finish the series the story goes on. I am currently working on the fourth and last book in the series. Unless I change my mind.

BC: Who or what first made you fall in love with storytelling?

A: My late wife Kathy was an avid reader.

She thought that I could write entertaining books based upon her reading some items that I had written.

BC: What inspired your latest book?

A: Freckles Finds A Forever Home was inspiring To me once we adopted her from the Bunny Farm. She was adorable from day one!

BC: Do you have a writing ritual or routine?

A: I have to first be in a quiet area with no interruptions. If I am ready to put a book together I lay out All of my notes on the dining room table and play With the order of the notes. Once I feel like they are in order and follow the story line it is time to put it all together.!

BC: What do books mean to you personally?

A: Books to me mean a life. I tell the story that When my family and I moved to Venezuela when I was in the fourth grade there were no kids my Age anywhere near us.

There was no T.V. There were hardly any books to read. So we scrambled to find any books, anywhere For me to read. During that period I began to write and make up Stories about the neighbors..hey it saved me!! I know how important books can become To people.
