Rincón: Top 5 Fun Facts and Fables I am from Rincón, the small and separate village in the north of Bonaire, where we pride ourselves in being slightly distinct. And if you really push us, we will readily declare that, of course, Rincon is the capital of Bonaire and not Kralendijk :) Den Gobi 1. a goalkeeper catching the ball in his arms, a symbol of cultural knowledge being passed down from one generation to the next. 'Mantene nos Kultura den Gobi'. (Conserve our culture) 2. a cultural event held by the Rincon family Pourier with the aim to inform the younger generations about their predecessors and the importance of knowing their history. 'Have you been at Den Gobi last year'?
Here are five terms that you must know before you visit: Gròt-di-lourdes; 1. an open air catholic church situated in the southern part of Rincon in front of the Lourdes cave. 'the Easter service will be at Gròt-di-lourdes'. 2. the first place where Rinconerians 'get intimate' with their newly found partner. 'I took him to gròt'.
Nort - Suit - Pariba - Pabou 1. Rincon is subdivided into these four districts, each with their own flavor, character and charm. 2. in Rincon, the question whether you can marry one another, really, really depends on the district that you come from :-)
Roi' dada 1. a ditch that contains rain water that runs from the southern mountain (Seri'Suit) in Rincon to the northern coast of the island. When overflooding, people from the neighborhood used to bathe there. 'ban tir'un kabe na Roi'Dada' (let's swim at Roi'Dada) 2. a sacred place for young couples to experiment sexually under tamarind trees. (no' wak e ku ne na Roi'Dada) (we saw them at Roi'Dada)
Teke 1. make love. 'ban teke' (let's make love) 2. sex. 'boso a teke?' (did you guys have sex)

The horn in the “R” signi es the usage of horns back in the day, in order to announce the news. The ag was made o cial in '89 during the rst celebration of the day of Rincón. Rincón is the only neighborhood in the Antilles (former Dutch Antilles) that has its own recognized ag and national anthem. Mrs. Veronica Mercera won the “Kanto Krioyo” festival with the song “Rikesa di Rincón” (the riches of Rincón), and has been since then the o cial national anthem of Rincón. Bonaire'smuseums It takes a bit of an e ort to locate some of them, but Bonaire is surprisingly rich in museums. Our small island with a population of just some 20,000 souls is home to anywhere between 12 to 15 museums – depending how you want to de ne the term.
Bonaire Museum of Natural History e beautiful antique house 'Kas van der Ree', built in 1885 by a Venezuelan plantation owner, and bought by the well-known Herrera family back then, was a shop where beef and goat meat from the Washington plantation were sold along with local vegetables and other food. Today, this historical building houses the Bonaire Museum of Natural History, showcasing Indian artifacts, birds of Bonaire, corals, fossils, shells and sea animals, tools used on the plantations, antique bo les and much more.
Here are 8 of Bonaire's museums: Mangasina di Rei Hailing from Rincón myself, of course I have to start here. Situated on the outskirts of the village of Rincon, Mangasina di Rei offers detailed insights into life in the Bonairian countryside of yesteryear. e colonial period and the era of slavery receive ample and o en confronting recognition. But there is a lot of a ention as well for agricultural, societal and cultural life between our island's hills. Every last Saturday of the month, Mangasina di Rei hosts a large outdoor event, including a small food market, with a different perspective on Bonaire's history and heritage every month.
Yana's Art Museum is wonderful, small permanent exhibition in the neighborhood of Lagun is a lasting tribute by her parents to their daughter, the artist Yana Filkovsky-Saito. She passed away some years ago, but her works – with an emphasis on aquarelles and photography - remain, and so does the loving memory of the artist herself.
Terramar Museum Next up, the museum that I currently have the honor to manage. e Terramar museum is located in Playa, right behind the Malecon (boardwalk), in the wonderfully restored monumental building “Kas Van der Dijs”. e permanent exposition is centered around a timeline from Bonaire's earliest known period of se lement to the present day. Archeology, the Pre-Columbian and Colonial periods are the museum's main focus but there is a lot of a ention for the deep connection between Bonaire and the sea too.
Museo Chichi' Tan is small museum in Rincón shows what a typical Rincón household of the past would have looked like. It has an interesting twist to it: this is actually the house with the lowest ceiling in the village but it was, at one time, inhabited by Rincón's tallest man. e museum is managed by the Arts and Culture Foundation of Rincón (Stichting Kunst en Cultuur).
Washington Slagbaai Immediately beyond the National Park's gates, to the le , you can nd the Washington Slagbaai museum. Its rooms offer a mix of what the larger park itself has to offer its visitors: a balance of nature-oriented and historical information related to the different former plantations that make up the present day park.
Museo Boneiru / SKAL As the only governmental culture center, Museo Boneiru is so far the only museum on the island that receives structural funding from the government. Also located in a historical building (Bonaire's rst hospital) in Playa Pabou, it showcases a selection of antique to modern lifestyle products and artifacts that were used by local families on the island.
Tanki Maraka Heritage Park As the only open-air museum on the island, Tanki Maraka is located in front of the upcoming district Bolivia or just a ten minutes' drive from both Kralendijk and Rincón. Tanki Maraka exhibits a peak of different perspectives of Bonaire's role during the World War II, by highlighting the area that was a U.S military camp from 1942-1947.

Arepa di Pampuna This recipe version of Pumpkin Pancakes and also known as 'Arepa di Pampuna', is one of the most popular ones used on Bonaire. Enjoy! Ingredients 1 medium pumpkin 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder 1 teaspoon of baking powder 1 lbs. of all-purpose flour 1 cup of milk 1 cup of water 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 4 eggs Sugar to taste Salt Raisin (optional) Oil for frying Mixing: Peel the pumpkin and remove all the seeds. Dice up the pumpkin, rinse it and put it to boil until soft. Drain and let the pumpkin cool down. In a bowl, add the boiled pumpkin, cinnamon, sugar, baking powder, flour and milk. Beat the eggs in a separate container and add salt and the vanilla extract. Once mixed add the mixture to the pumpkin bowl. Mix well together and add raisins if desired

Frying: In a frying pan, pour a thin layer of oil on low to medium heat. When the oil becomes hot, with a large spoon, slowly pour the mixture into the pan. When on side is completely cooked, gently flip it over. When both sides are cooked take it out and pour another spoonful into the oil. Add more oil if needed.

In light of Foyan Boyz's 25th anniversary, which will be on the 21st of April, Boné Magazine wanted to put them in the spotlight. So, they can share their history and accomplishments and especially what we can expect of them in 2020!
1. On the 21st of April Foyan Boyz will be celebrating their 25th anniversary in the entertainment industry. How did the musical career start for Foyan Boyz, and what is the meaning behind the name (for those who don't know)? 25 years ago, the festival “Kanto Krioyo” was coming to a halt, and we decided to start a band to enlarge the festival. After the festival we were approached by Ana Thode, who wanted to participate with us; this encouraged us to continue with Foyan Boyz. Foyan Boyz was a football team, that practiced and played every afternoon in front of the house of Flora Martis, lovingly known as Foyan. That is how the name Foyan Boyz came to be. 2. In the 25 years of existence of Foyan Boyz, which are the highlights that would de ne your musical career? Throughout our musical career, we have performed 3 times in The Netherlands, Cuba, Surinam, many times on sister islands Curaçao and Aruba, as well as on the Pullmantur cruise ship. We have won the “Kanto Krioyo” festival 10 times and won twice in the Tumba Festival. We have also participated 5 times in the Seu march in Curaçao.
3. What is the vision and mission of Foyan Boyz for Bonaire? Our mission is to maintain our traditional and cultural krioyo music alive, and to pass this on to the next generation. Our vision is for Bonaire not to lose its identity and to keep maintaining its strong culture. 4. What can we expect of Foyan Boyz in 2020? A lot is to be expected from us in 2020, new music will be coming soon as well as video clips.
