he best windsurfers in the world, are born and raised in Bonaire.

Windsurfing is not only the most popular sport practiced on Bonaire, but it’s also part of the Bonairean culture. For Elton ‘Taty’ Frans Windsurfing is not only a sport, but it’s a part of who he is. The boy of wind and sea, lives on the powerful waves of Bonaire. With many international titles under his belt, Taty always remained humble and close to his roots. His road to success wasn’t smooth, it was like the waves he adores, with ups and downs. In this interview Taty shares 5 important factors that changed his life and molded him into the person he is today, a bright soul who always has a smile on his face.

Life brings you ups and downs. In 2017 a big crash happened during a windsurf race and left me with a 10 cm deep cut, torn muscles, a fractured hamstring and blood infection. And then you ask yourself: ‘’what else can go wrong..?” I stayed calm and positive!

Bonaire National Marine Park The marine park extends from the high-watermark to the 60 meter (200 feet) depth contour, encompassing the entire coast of Bonaire including Klein Bonaire and Lac. The marine park is home to important and endangered species such as sea turtles, conch, and sharks as well as globally threatened ecosystems such as coral reefs, sea grass, and mangroves. Marine park staff maintain around 100 public moorings, conduct scientific research, provide information to users, monitor human and natural impact and enforce the park’s laws and regulations.

Washington Slagbaai National Park Bonaire’s terrestrial park is a nature sanctuary located in the northwest part of the island. It provides safe habitat for many important flora and fauna of Bonaire. Parrots, flamingos, parakeets, iguanas and many other species of birds and reptiles can be found in this sanctuary. The beaches inside the park are a nesting ground for globally endangered sea turtles. The park is rich in historical and cultural heritage. The Visitor Center at the park’s entrance, with its museum, hiking and kids trails, offers an enjoyable learning experience.

How did you prepare yourself for the competition?

My mom motivated me into participating, because I had done one competition before in my life, and they asked if I was willing to participate again. I worked really hard to present the best version of myself possible, even though I am very young.

Beauty routine: We got an etiquette, public speaking, catwalk, and photoshoot course. All of these courses helped me a lot. I went to the gym weekly, and had a healthy diet.

Goals: I want to own a hair salon one day, and I also want to help those less fortunate.

In every corner of Rincon you’ll find different stands, with different types of food. But, nothing beats the ‘Bachi Bachi’! You need to try this this dish.

It’s made of buck’s scrotum, goat’s breasts and other offal. A lot of people come in the middle of the night to see how the ‘Bachi Bachi’ is cooked and to be the first to eat at dawn. It’s sold out by 9am!

Simadan is a traditional dance the farmers do to thank the Gods for a successful harvest. There’s a parade in the afternoon and one at sunset. The parade at sunset is the big one, t he one you would not want to miss!

Different groups dance and sing to cultural music, wearing beautiful folkloric clothes, and the public is welcome to join the parade. At the end there’s the ‘bulament’i kandela’ (crossfire jumping) to ‘kore ku fuku’ (purify and get rid of bad vibes).
