In February of 2024, Blokart sailors will meet on the beautiful island of Bonaire to compete in the first Caribbean Open Blokart Championships! This event has been discussed for some time but when Dave Lussier offered his help to bring the plans to fruition, the idea became a reality with the support and encouragement of INDEBON. The Caribbean Open Blokart Championships (COBC) was born out of passion for blokarting and racing, coupled with the idyllic conditions on Bonaire. The Southern Caribbean is renowned for its perfect winds for kiteboarding and windsurfing, evident in the world's top freestyle and slalom wind surfers, many hailing from Bonaire. With constant trade winds blowing from the east at 15-20 knots and temperatures ranging between 25-30°C, it's a wind sport paradise, and blokart landsailing is the latest player on the scene. While the landsailing track at Bonaire Landsailing Adventures is an ideal place to grasp the mechanics of sailing, it's not particularly designed for racing. The layout suits simple manoeuvres, with tacking at the north corner and gybing at the south. No extensive sailing knowledge is necessary. The ‘Tras di Montaña’ location, previously Bonaire's first airstrip and now used for various activities like baseball, flying kites, dog training, and goat grazing, sits high and flat in the center of the island, capturing the best wind. Expect tight quarter racing with some technical skills required. In short, it promises great fun for both competitors and spectators!
The International Blokart Racing Association (IBRA) oversees international events, maintaining standards and expectations for competitors. The inaugural Caribbean event will be sanctioned by the IBRA, making pilots eligible for the Blokart World Championships in Nevada in April 2024. While blokart racing typically offers two categories, Production and Performance, the first COBC will also feature a cruiser class, encouraging first-timers to join in without adhering to IBRA's strict rules. There’s also a Youth category for the under 18’s. Semii Marten We recently had the honor to interview our talented local artist, Semii Marten. Semii has been very active this year and we asked her about her ‘Spotlait Award’, what she’s grateful for, her goals for 2024 and more. Read it all here! On November 24, you were surprised and honored with a ‘Spotlait Award’ for your dedication and work in the music / cultural industry. How do you feel about this recognition? “I was very very surprised because I did not expect it at all. I was booked by SKAL a month before to perform a few of my songs for an annual ‘end of year event’. So, I arrived at that said event thinking that I would just have to perform. When the event started and the night went on all of a sudden, they announced that it is my night to be in the spotlight! The band Orkesta Diamonds and Rayshantaly performed some of my songs and a group of my loved ones and dancers showed up as well as a surprise to support. I felt very appreciated, and this night gave me such a motivation to continue and do what I love. It was very beautiful for me to see that what you do as a person, a singer or an artist can impact others around you. Even though I am far from where I want to be, this recognition made me want to push more but also to take more time to appreciate everything that I have and everything that I do.” What was the most important life lesson you have learned this year? “To do what you truly want to do, for example; in your career, with your hobby or personal life (as long as it positive of course) regardless of the opinion of others.” What is something that you are grateful for this year? • I’m grateful that I took on the challenge to sing Tumba for the first time in my life and got selected to the finals in Curaçao. • Grateful that I finished my studies and got my second degree which is ‘Pedagogische Getuigschrift.’ • Grateful that I released my first ever EP consisting of 5 new songs called ‘Glow’! • Grateful to have gotten the recognition from the Government of Bonaire as a singer/ entertainer on the island. • Grateful for every performance I got throughout the whole year. • Grateful for everyone around me that always brings the good energy and vibes.
What are your goals for 2024 and what do you need to do to achieve them? “I do have different goals in different areas, not only in music. What I need to do to achieve them is to maintain the motivation that I have, stay focused, goal oriented and most importantly follow my heart and instincts.” How are you going to spend the Holidays? “I am going to spend them just like every other Holiday for the last 5 years; singing, singing, a little bit of dancing and more singing.”

What’s your fav. Bonè Holiday tradition? “The famous family Christmas events that are organized between friends and family.” What’s your wish for 2024? “I wish to continue doing what I love but also try to enjoy life more and not be too much on a schedule like how I am used to.”
What is something that you are grateful for this year? I am truly grateful for my friends and family. They are the pillars of strength during challenging times and the source of joy during moments of celebration. The unwavering support, love, and understanding they provide create a foundation of security and warmth. What are your goals for 2024 and what do you need to do to achieve them? To achieve this goal, I am working harder on my mental, physical and emotional health.I want to create a solid foundation for success out of myself, push myself to my fullest potentials, because for me it's not just about winning a crown; it's about embodying the values, culture, and spirit of Bonaire with authenticity and pride. How are you going to spend the Holidays? This holiday season I am going to give back to the community, and hopefully convince others to do the same; Let’s Volunteer, Donate, Support and Spread Kindness this holiday season.

What changed for you after winning the title of Miss Teen Bonaire? The biggest change for me was the spotlight and responsibility that came with the crown. One of the most important life lessons I've learned this year was the power of authenticity. You learn so much when you embrace your true self, step outside your comfort zone and just be you
What’s your fav. Bonè Holiday tradition? The food! Personally I think we have the best when it comes to the holidays. Cooking together with family and passing down recipes from generations to generations.
What’s your wish for 2024?
Wishing for a year filled with opportunities to make a positive impact, meaningful connections, personal growth, and the ability to inspire and uplift others.
