“Mother FIRST, Creative FOREVER“
Islan d Arts Variety is Spice
The Covid-19 outbreak had many of us confined to our own customary ways and longing for new experiences, which was easier to do before traveling became more restricted. Some art forms can help provide us with this experience. So when I heard about this new artsy hotspot, I took the time to sit down with its creative owner to discover the story behind it.
Nurca ‘Noebby’ Araujo Nuñez is a creative director & all around stylist, a mother of 2, and the creator & owner of Terras Felis. A colorful & artsy Mexicanthemed bar & lounge. Terras Felis was Noebby’s way of giving her mother’s strip mall,‘La Hacienda’, situated on Kaya Nikiboko Noord a facelift, while also giving her customers a place where they can experience something different. Noebby’s choice of a Mexican theme was inspired by her grandmother’s musical tastes - specifically, oldschool Mexican songs about female empowerment. To make sure Noebby’s ideas were properly captured, she collaborated with Pink Flamingo - a local Dutch artist who painted all the intricate & vibrant murals around the establishment.

The main entrance consists of a door made of wooden logs, with an awning that has art on the ceiling depicting Mexican women dancing – a symbol of the female empowerment that helped inspire Noebby’s vision for Terras Felis. When you step foot inside the building, you can find the reception area next to some chairs with a photoworthy backdrop for the customers. As you walk into the lounge area, you’ll notice that each wall has its own unique, colorful mural; falling in line with Noebby’s vision for each part of the interior to have its own vibe to it. For example, there’s a corner to just sit down and relax, or you can head over to the ‘Couples’ Corner’. In the center, there’s a large table for a group of people to hang out right next to a small corner reserved for the little ones.
Her attention to detail is something that should not be glossed over - from the colors & decor down to the event planning & staff uniforms, every aspect of this establishment is curated to ensure her visitors can have the most authentic experience possible. She wants to create a hot spot where people can come in and take pictures of their experience to later post on social media, which can eventually persuade more people to come and share this experience. In the future she wants Terras Felis to have a separate recreational space for youngsters where they can make use of what they might not have at home, such as computers & game consoles. She grew up with these spots and sees the importance of it. Terras Felis is a reminder of the importance of diversity, particularly in art & culture during a time where traveling and experiencing other cultures has become more difficult. Bonaire’s culture will always be there for us, so there’s nothing wrong with a bit of variety at the end of the day, right?
