A viewer’s perspective on our island’s art
Art is a medium that forms a major part of our daily lives. Not just in the form of music, dances, clothing or paintings, but in everyday objects as well. From the moment you wake up out of bed, this is apparent; the design of your bed, your lamp, your curtains, or when you step outside and see the many different kinds of architecture or car designs. And with a culturally-rich island like Bonaire, there is no shortage of art to be found. With the ever-growing population, there has also been an increase in projects being done; murals, statues/sculptures (such as the Flamingo made out of recycled pink objects next to Wilhelmina Park), merchandise being made by local brands, or even buildings being constructed or renovated to look more modern and appealing to the public. There’s great progress being made with art on this island. But there’s also still progress to be made, especially from our own people, which raises the question: Why aren’t more Bonairian people stepping up to express themselves through art? What more could be done? Take for example, the two recent murals that were done on Kaya Korsou and on Kaya Bonaire. While both murals are amazing in their own right, they were both done by international artists Edoardo “Dodici” Trionfera and Tymon De Laat respectively, artists who routinely travel the world to leave their mark. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, in fact I’m very grateful that they’ve decided to make some art
on little old Bonaire. More art is never a bad thing. But what’s stopping our own people from being able to express themselves to a similar degree as well? The answer can be attributed to a few factors; those being a lack of facilities where aspiring artists can work on their craft (across different types), lack of support for said facilities, negative stigma against art as a career, and most importantly, lack of enough support to keep people going in the first place. That’s not to say things are hopeless; thanks to the combined efforts of foundations such as the Fundashon Plataforma Kultural, who hosts projects & workshops (such as “Street Colors Bonaire”, with help from the same artists I mentioned earlier), as well as individual artists and art teachers, not only are they helping make the island prettier, but they’re also helping keep the art community alive and growing. With the increase of art projects being done on the island, hopefully more of our residents will be inspired to work on art projects themselves. And as a community, we should be there to support them.
‘As a community we should be there to support them’ Which is why with this segment, we aim to explore not only individual artists, but also art teachers and those with knowledge in the medium to help give them more exposure and appreciation for what they do to make the island a bit prettier, one step at a time.
