A peek inside

The things we carry with us carry so much weight.

Each item in our purse, pockets, and cluttered glove compartment reflects a part of the pekel we carry.

The places we've been. The struggles we've faced.

And the powerful lessons we’ve learned along the way.

The things that matter most to us – we bring them wherever we go.

When the pain that they’re carrying gets too much to bear,

And when a waiting couple’s pekel gets too heavy, Bonei Olam is there to

make sure they’re never carrying it alone.

Join Bonei Olam Canada in helping couples carry the wait.

Too many couples are weighed down by a burden no one should have to carry

A LETTER FROM BONEI OLAM FOUNDER

RABBI BOCHNER

DEAR FRIEND,

We’re all carrying something.

After all, life is a package deal gifted to us by Hashem. And as long as we’re on this earth, it’s ours to carry.

There are some who are lucky enough to receive a small, light package. There are challenges along the way, but overall, life is good.

But for some, their pekel is a big, bulky bundle. Their challenges are hard to hide, painful to carry, and weigh them down every moment of every day.

For a couple waiting for a child, the weight of their pekel is more than heavy — it’s crushing.

And they shlep it everywhere. Their pekel is up front and center at every Yom Tov table they sit at, and every Simcha they attend, where they too often feel like bystanders in a community centered around children.

Bonei Olam Canada is there to help these couples carry their bundle, offering support, guidance, and practical assistance.

And when they hold their child in their hands for the first time – we feel the relief of the burden they’ve finally been able to put down. After all, we’ve been carrying it with them the entire time. It’s not always simple. But with tremendous siyata dishmaya, we continue to innovate and expand, creating new pathways for our couples to reach their ultimate goal.

To date, Bonei Olam has helped bring nearly 13,000 babies into this worldthat’s 180 school buses full of children!

In Canada alone, Bonei Olam Canada has helped bring down over 400 babies into this world - that's huge! And for 26 years, since the day we helped our first couple, we’ve leaned on the support of you, our generous donors to lighten this heavy, heavy load.

Too many couples are weighed down by a burden no one should have to carry —- will you help them finally be able to put down their bundle?

And in this zchus, may you be blessed with siyata dishmaya and a pekel filled with only goodness.

How it all began…. and how far we’ve come!

From one struggling couple and the kernel of an idea discussed over a dining room table in Outremont over 20 years ago, Bonei Olam Canada has traveled a long journey to become the national force it is today.

Join us as we sit down with three founders of various divisions of Bonei Olam Canada and understand how we got started, where we’re headed, and what we still have to do.

My wife and I waited over five years to have our own kids. Our experience made us sensitive to the unique pain of infertility, and after discussing it with my wife, we decided we had to help any other couples in Montreal who were experiencing infertility.

This goes back to 2003, and we were groping in the dark for ideas on how to get started. Then, thankfully, we found a small organization in Toronto which agreed to help fund treatments for couples in Montreal, and we were off! Back then, we were connected with two fertility clinics in Montreal, and when couples reached out to us, we connected them with the clinics and with the Toronto-based funding.

As we grew, our needs expanded, and the organization in Toronto told us they could no longer help us with funding. Now we were really in a pickle! We reached out to Rabbi Bochner in New York’s main Bonei Olam offices, who agreed to start funding couples in Montreal. But as we grew, it became clear that it was time for Montreal’s community to start supporting its couples struggling with infertility. Rabbi Bochner agreed to come to Montreal to help us kick off the fundraising. My wife and her friends organized a great event with Rabbi Bochner as the speaker, and that was our first fundraising event in Montreal.

From there, things just grew. We started doing dinner events every couple of years, and the Canadian fundraising took off. Then we needed hashacha in the clinics, so we kept on expanding. Eventually, we hired Mr. Hersh Feferkorn to do the medical advising, and Baruch Hashem, he’s doing an amazing job!

Bottom Line: No couple should ever hesitate to call Bonei Olam. You’re not a rachmanus if you do. It’s like any other issue a person faces: there’s

no reason to face it alone. We have funding, advisors, hashgacha, emotional support - so there’s no reason not to come forth. Even couples experiencing secondary infertility should just pick up the phone. We’re here for you!

A Story that Keeps Me Going

Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Kishner works for Bonei Olam’s New York office. He also has a small shul in New York. Recently, Rabbi Kishner called me and said something which made my jaw drop!

He told me about a man who came into his shul in New York, and they got to talking, and this fellow asked Rabbi Kishner if he knew me, Ferencz from Montreal. Rabbi Kishner said, “Sure! I’m with Bonei Olamof course I know Ferencz!”

The man smiled. “15 years ago,” he said, “we were waiting to have our first. I called Mr. Ferencz, and he helped me like a father would help a son. I’ll never forget what he did for me! The baby we had then is now 15, and I’m so grateful to him!”

I couldn’t believe it. That case was a hard one, but I’d almost forgotten about it, as the couple had moved out of Montreal, and so much time had passed. But in New York, a 15-year old yingel is walking around, and his father credits Bonei Olam Canada with his life. Wow! That meant the world to me. It makes it all worth it!

In 2012, my uncle and mechutan, Leib Mermelmstein decided to get involved in getting Bonei Olam Canada off the ground in a big way. He decided that he would do everything he possibly could to bring Bonei Olam Canada to the next level.

He did a lot of askanus, trying to convince people to jump on board. Well, I was young, and he convinced me to get involved. One night, we went into Montreal from Tosh to brainstorm about setting up a proper office in Montreal with effective marketing, fundraising, and work flow.

We came back home with a lot of work to do, which at that point mostly meant fundraising so that the organization would have the funds to reach the next level.

Together with my brother-in-law, Yoily Grunhut, we decided that we would get every single person in Tosh to donate and get on board. For four weeks, we barely slept. We put in so much effort, hosting 10-15 parlor meetings with different age groups in Tosh, to make sure we were connecting with every potential donor. We live-streamed Rabbi Bochner into those events, hosted our first dinner, printed a journal, and convinced honorees to accept the honors. Then we held our breaths and waited for the money to come in.

That first year, we were so successful, we were shocked!

Two years later, we convinced Rabbi Bochner to come up to fundraise in Tosh. I arranged meetings with donors, took Rabbi Bochner around, and spoke to anyone who would listen to me. In the end, we collected a very substantial sum just from Tosh! We were shocked again. We never expected to reach such numbers. It was a crazy success, and as time went on, we had to create the infrastructure to keep up with our growth. We established ourselves as a Canadian charitable entity for filing purposes, and we created a board of myself, Yoily Grunhut, Mr. Ferencz, and Rabbi Bochner, to oversee the finances of the organization.

At this point, operations were still running out of the Ferencz’s house, but we were outgrowing that setup. We needed an office, we needed a proper

medical advisor- we needed a lot of things. It took a lot of time and work, but we got there. Now we have an office, full time staff, medical professionals on staff, and our own clinic!

I look back, and it’s clearly a lot of siyata dishmaya. That’s for sure. What kept me going? That initial fundraising campaign took just four weeks of my year. Yes, it was a crazy four weeks, but it was only four weeks. And the result? Actual yiddishe kinder coming down to this world! There is no other organization where you can literally buy yiddishe kinder with physical money. That money can buy a child is a crazy chiddush. And it’s the best feeling in the whole world!

A Story that Keeps Me Going

I know a couple who tried to avoid using Bonei Olam. They were embarrassed to be part of the organization, and they didn’t realize that we are completely confidential. They decided to go directly through the medical system instead of using Bonei Olam. Good luck doing that here in Quebec!

After several phone calls, they managed to get an appointment for an initial consultation… eleven months away! With no choice, they called Bonei Olam, who got them an appointment a few weeks later. Baruch Hashem, their yeshuah arrived quickly through the doctor that Bonei Olam connected them with. A couple weeks after their baby’s bris, they got a call from the first clinic they had tried: their consultation appointment was coming up! Imagine the pain we helped them avoid! That’s a little baby around now (amongst hundreds of others) because of Bonei Olam Canada- and there is no better feeling than that in the world!

My wife and I got married about eight years ago, and after a while with no good news, we realized it was time to get help. We live in Ct. St. Luc, and we literally never heard of Bonei Olam.

Instead, we reached out on our own to a clinic and had our initial consultation. The doctor at that first meeting ordered my wife and I to take a whole bunch of tests, which we completed quickly. Then the doctor looked at the results and told us which treatment protocol to start with.

We didn’t question anything, and instead got the ball rolling. Then COVID hit. The clinic called to say that if we started the treatment cycle, they might have to cancel it at any point because of COVID. If that would happen, they explained, we’d have to pay an extra $18,000 to start the cycle again.

My wife and I said “no way!” But we weren’t sure where else to turn. We were really lost. My wife called a friend to vent. That friend works as a nurse for Bonei Olam Canada, and she told my wife that we had to get involved. We went to our first Cocoon event then, and we were shocked: there was a whole community of Jewish couples experiencing the same thing we were! We were no longer alone!

At that point, we also met with Mr. Feferkorn, the medical advisor at Bonei Olam. He looked through our file and advised us to take one more blood test. When the results came in, we were in for a shockthey pointed to a very serious condition that we were dealing with, which needed to be dealt with immediately. And our clinic had never even thought to test us for this condition!

Mr. Feferkorn told us we’d need to travel to New York to start treatment immediately. But how could we do that? It was so impractical, and so, so, so expensive.

“Forget about money right now,” Mr. Feferkorn told us then. Bonei Olam was ready to do whatever it took for us to have a family- regardless of cost. It was mind-boggling.

After a couple of years of treatment, our miracle son was born. Baruch Hashem!

Throughout the course of our journey, I realized that I had to direct any couple in Ct. St. Luc dealing with infertility to Bonei Olam. There was so little awareness about Bonei Olam and its amazing work

in the Sefardic community, and my wife and I wanted to change that.

After a few meetings with Bonei Olam staff members, I founded the Ct. St. Luc chapter of Bonei Olam Canada. My wife and I were very public about our infertility journey, so people know about us. Sefardic couples who are groping in the dark for infertility help call us, and we direct them to Bonei Olam, and continue to follow up with them along their journeys.

My whole goal is that no couple who needs Bonei Olam’s services should feel that there’s anything to be embarrassed of. Infertility is an issue which really isn’t your fault. It’s from Hashem, and there is no room for taboo or tension around it. Any couple that’s married for one and a half, two years, and wondering what their next step is should think first to call Bonei Olam. They’ll be your infertility GPS! People going through infertility simply don’t realize how much Bonei Olam can help them: there’s dayanim, financial help, and of course, medical help. Money is not what’s going to stop you from having a baby!

A Story that Keeps Me Going

There’s one thing that keeps me going, and I’m holding him as we speak! Over the eight years that my wife and I struggled with infertility, Bonei Olam helped us so much financially, medically, halachically- everything. My wife and I look at each other every night after our baby is asleep, and we wonder if it’s real, or just a fantastic dream. Because we started off as a Bonei Olam couple, the stories of infertility in our community hit us extra personally- and we want to do whatever we can to help any other couple experiencing this unique pain.

WHEN THINGS DON’T GO AS PLANNED

I just had my first art class today.

I know. I know. I’m not the painting type, and I’m definitely way too young to be having a midlife crisis.

But honestly, I’ve been desperate for some distraction lately.

There’s only so many new recipes I can tryand so many new dishes dear hubby will be willing to taste.

As for my social life, with all my friends so busy having babies, and feeding babies, and trying to get babies to sleep, we hardly get to talk. Even our sacred Sunday acai bowl outings haven’t been happening.

And when we do get together, I find myself slipping away to the bathroom and leaving a lot earlier than I used to.

It’s hard to contribute to a conversation centered around chaotic mornings, chronic sleep deprivation, and the best baby jar brands when all I know is peace, quiet, and my lonely little routine.

I’ve always been so close to my high school friends. And we were lucky - we all got married one after the next, planning gifts (airpods and slippers) and then breakfasts (french toast and omelets) for our husbands together.

But a few years later, I’ve fallen a step behind. And it hurts.

All the waiting. The wondering. The hoping. Month after month, the cycle repeats itself. It’s beginning to fray on my nerves.

So who knows, maybe an art class or two will be just the thing to help me relax?

Couples going through infertility are never alone.

Bundles THE WE Share

They have Bonei Olam’s help every step of the way — and a fortifying bond woven of pain, hope, and prayer that they share with the holiest of women.

Sara. Rivka. Rochel. Chana. Michal. Eishes Manoach. The Isha Hashunamis.

In a world where everyone around them had child after child, these women bore the pain of barrenness for decades. They shed endless tears, begging Hashem for children, for descendants who’d follow in His ways.

And they were told no, again and again.

They were told they were barren, that there was no hope.

But they never stopped davening, and believing in the miracle that would come.

At Bonei Olam, we’ll never stop believing in miracles – because thanks to ה”בקה, and the immense capabilities of modern medicine, we witness them daily.

Today, thousands of years after their stories of struggle and ultimately, salvation unfolded, these holy women are still davening. They’re begging for our success, for the precious, beautiful couples in Klal Yisroel still waiting, just as they once did.

Their tefilos carry timeless strength and reassurance, infusing us, and every couple waiting for their miracle, with the belief that there is always, always hope.

Sarathe first of the imahos

The first of Klal Yisroel’s Imahos, Sara’s path to motherhood was anything but simple.

In fact, it seemed so certain that she would never have children, that Sara instructed Avraham Avinu to take Hagar as wife, and have children through her. But when Sara was 89 years old, Hashem visited Avraham, promising him that Sara would have a son a year later.

And so it was, at the age of 90, Sara gave birth to her first, and only child – Yitzchak Avinu.

Rivka

the second of the imahos

After ten years of infertility, in which Yitzchak and Rivka poured their hearts out in prayer for children, their tefilos were finally answered.

In truth, Rivka was barren*, and it was physically impossible for her to have children. Hashem answered her tefilos with a miracle that transcended nature, and she gave birth to twin sons - Yaakov and Eisav.

*MINCHAS ASHER

Rochel

the third of the imahos

For 14 years, Rochel watched as Leah had one child after the next. Her sister gave birth to Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Yehuda, Yissochor and Zevulun — 6 of the 12 shevatim, while she waited with empty arms.

Her pain was so great that she cried out to Yaakov – “give me children, for if not I am dead”. Her heartwrenching tefilos were answered, and she merited to give birth to the two youngest shvatim, Yosef and Binyamin.

Chanathe mother of shmuel hanavi

Chana, one of the 7 nevios, was married to Elkanah, who also had a second wife, Penina. Penina had seven children, while Chana remained childless. From the depths of her pain, Chana davened for a child, promising Hashem that if she’d be granted a son, she’d ensure that every moment of his life was dedicated to serving Him.

Hashem answered her heartfelt tefilos, and she gave birth to a son, who grew up to be the great Shmuel Hanavi.

Michaldovid's wife, the daughter of shaul

The pasuk writes that until her dying day, Michal, the daughter of Shaul Hamelech, and wife of Dovid Hamelech, had no children.

The medrash interprets this to mean that she did have a child, but that tragically, she died on the very same day that she finally gave birth.

Isha Shunamis

the mother of chavakuk hanavi

Married for many years without children, The Ishah HaShunamis and her husband would welcome the navi Elisha to stay in their home each year.

In return for their hospitality, Elisha promised the couple that they would have a son. One year after this promise was made, the Isha Hashunamis gave birth to a son, who grew up to be Chavakuk Hanavi.

Eishes

Manoach the mother of shimshon

Although they had been waiting for years, Manoach and his wife never stopped davening for a child. One day, a malach appeared to EIshes Manoach, and told her she would give birth to a son who would save the Jewish People.

The child born to them was the mighty Shimshon who fought against the Plishtim. Chazal say the name of Shimshon’s mother was Tzelfonis, who is counted among the 23 righteous women in Tanach.

I’ve never been a morning person.

I'm more of the stay-up- late-yapping, bedtimes-are-totally-optional, slamthe-snooze-button kind of girl.

So needless to say, getting to work on time and talking to real life humans before lunchtime has never been my strong point.

But these days, I’ve learnt that I’m capable of a whole lot more than I thought I was — including waking up in the wee hours of the morning multiple times a week for 5:30 AM lab appointments.

After being poked and prodded countless times by cheery nurses at an unearthly hour, I’m usually too drained to drive. So I close my eyes as my husband speeds back to Brooklyn, trying to fight tears, exhaustion, and the thousand and one what- ifs that flit through my brain.

And when my co-workers give each other knowing smiles as they take in the gray circles under my eyes and my bloated appearance… it takes every bit of strength I have not to turn around and crawl back into bed.

It was the package of newborn sized Huggies that completely and totally melted my heart.

Because while I’d watched plenty of babies in the past — nieces, nephews, my friends’ kids — changing them had never been part of the job description.

So even more than the little onesies and swaddles and bonnets covering every surface of my house, those teeny tiny diapers were a

And while I’ve never been so tired in my life, my eyes are wide open as I try to take this miracle all in. Years of early morning wakeups got me hooked on coffee, but the brew I’m drinking now after long nights spent shushing a newborn tastes a whole lot sweeter.

You wrapped up every detail.

And most of all, you packaged every phonecall, message, and email with so much love.

You brought this campaign to life in the most beautiful way imaginable.

And we couldn’t have been more gifted.

May you be zoche to siyata dishmaya in all areas of your life, and may Hashem grant you with the strength to continue doing only good.

Who are our Star Raisers?

They are busy teachers, loving mothers, and devoted friends.

They’re in their 20s, their 40s, and well beyond their 60s too.

They own businesses.

They have family obligations.

They lead busy social lives.

But once a year, they join together, and over text, whatsapp, email, and good old fashioned phone calls, they drive the success of our auction.

We couldn’t do it without them.

Why I Raise

“I never thought of myself as the fundraising type, but when my friend asked me to join last year’s campaign as a zchus for a mutual friend waiting to have a baby, I couldn’t say no”. (And yes, that friend now has a precious little baby girl!)”

Suri L.

“About 5 girls from my high school class joined the campaign as a zchus for 2 classmates who were waiting for children. Besides for the great feeling of doing something powerful and concrete for our friends, it’s also a great way for us to stay connected. We share ideas throughout the campaign and have an absolute blast together at the retreat!”

Malka T.

“My sister and I challenged each other to see who could raise more money. It was tough, because we couldn’t ask all our family members to donate twice, but when they heard that we were doing this together, most of them were actually thrilled to give double!”

Adina R

“ Reaching out to people is something that’s very difficult for me. You’ll sooner find me reading or working out than talking to or even texting someone. But as someone who’s gone through infertility, I know that Bonei Olam’s support means everything to couples dealing with this challenge. So if my picking up the phone to fundraise means that another couple will have the child they want so badly - I couldn’t be happier to do it”.

Dina S.

“This is my 4th year as a raiser. The feeling of working toward my goal, knowing that every dollar is going to the most incredible cause, makes the late nights well worth it. (And there’s always coffee!)”

Esti R.

“You can say it’s in my blood. My mother has been raising since the first year of the STAR program. After I got married, and had my first baby - I jumped right in and signed up too.

If she could do it with a family of 8 kids kah, surely I could find the time.”
