To think, I once lived with interrupted dreams — but uninterrupted days. I had a perfectly clean home (I promise!) and all the time in the world. I could schmooze for hours on the phone, blissfully uninterrupted. Drink all the tea I wanted in peace. Leave the house whenever the mood struck. But beneath that peaceful veneer were my naive, newlywed dreams, interrupted. My rosy plans for the future, interrupted. My idea of what life was supposed to be, painfully, devastatingly interrupted.

It was the quietest, hardest, loneliest time of my life. Now, thanks to Bonei Olam, I start conversations I’ll never finish.

Down my block, there’s a quiet little house surrounded by many houses full of noise. It’s a beautiful home, with flowers on the sill and a wonderful couple inside. But whenever I pass, I feel a familiar pang: For the days I know are flowing unbroken inside, one into another. For the halls, empty of a child’s laughter. For the nights that stretch, long and undisturbed. I know the pain, because I’ve been there myself. And every day, I experience it alongside too many Bonei Olam couples.

It wasn't, when I first woke up at the crack of dawn, hoping to brew a moment alone with a fine Colombian single-origin roast.

My favorite ritual, dripped through a microfilter. The perfect start to a busy day, suddenly broken by a sharp cry of “Mommy!!”

When the bus pulls away with a squealing lurch and dark cloud of smoke, I’m left standing in sudden silence.

Two sleepy eye-rubs and he’s wide awake. That’s when the pace of my morning changes drastically. Irreversibly. Shirt, pants (“One foot in, now the next. In in, good job!”) Magnetiles, puzzles, lego. Cheerios. Milk. Paper Towel.

ON Haitus I shifted the phone to my other ear, buying time to think. "You’re going to a Kimpeturin heim?" "Just for 1 week," A pause. "I…I’m sorry." The words hung there between us. An unspoken ask. Four kids. For one week. "Malkie, I—" "I know," she said quickly. "I know what I'm asking. But Ma doesn't have the koach this time around, and Shani's hands are full with her new baby otherwise I’d split them, and — " Her voice cracked. "Shevy, I don't have anyone else. And I really, really need this." The text came in at 11:47 PM. Can I call you tomorrow? It’s important. I stared at my sister Malkie's message for a minute, then sighed. "Important" from Malkie usually meant one of her kids needed a ride somewhere, or she needed a recipe. I typed back a thumbs up and tried to fall asleep.

I closed my eyes. Saw myself making four lunches every morning. Four bedtimes. Four different personalities, four different needs. A house full of noise and chaos, and everything I didn't have. Everything I'd been waiting ten years to have. Did she REALLY know what she was asking?

But somehow, I had a niggling feeling this time was different.

"Of course," I heard myself say. "I'll do it."

"I don’t know what to do," Malkie said the next morning, her voice tight and high. "Shmuly and I discussed it. I can’t go straight home afterwards this time."

My husband Duvid was quiet when I first told him. Just nodded slowly, the way he did when he was choosing his words carefully.

A true story, as told to us by Shevy.*

"You don't have to be a martyr," he said finally. "I'm not. She's my sister. She needs this." "And what about you? What do you need?" I didn't have an answer for that. *** The first couple of days were fine. A fun adventure, even. I learned that Faigy only ate toast cut into specific shapes, and that Yitzy wore sweaters and shorts whatever the weather, and that Moishy would negotiate bedtime like a lawyer if you let him. But then Chaya threw up at 2 AM. By morning, three of the four kids were down with a stomach virus. The laundry was never-ending. The house smelled like Lysol and defeat. I sat on the hallway floor outside the bathroom door, holding Chaya as she cried softly. I felt my own tears start. My phone buzzed. A reminder: Appointment with Dr. Bernstein, 1 PM. Then another reminder: Checkup, 8 AM Wednesday. And another: Follow-up with Dr. Bernstein, 2 PM Monday. I stared at the string of notifications. There was no way. No possible way I could make all of

these appointments while managing four kids, three of whom couldn't keep anything down. I texted my Bonei Olam counselor to ask if she was available. *** "Tell me what you need," Rochel said, no preamble, no questions. "I need — " My voice broke. "I have three appointments this week, and I'm watching my sister's four kids, and three of them have a stomach virus, and I can't miss these appointments, and I just —" "Okay," Rochel said calmly. "Let's figure this out. Which appointments are time-sensitive?" We went through each one. The first appointment could be done by phone. The check-up had to happen, but it could be pushed a day or two, when the kids were feeling a little better. The follow-up could be moved a week. “They hate when I call so last minute,” I said. I could feel my stress levels rise at the thought. "Shevy. I'll call the office for you. Trust me, it’s not a big deal." Twenty minutes later, she called back. Dr. Bernstein would do a phone consultation this afternoon. My check-up was moved by two days, and the follow-up to the following week. *** Friday morning, I walked into my check-up in a fog of exhaustion. And that's when Dr. Bernstein saw something she'd missed before. "Wow! I don’t believe it.” My heart lurched. Believe what?

What did she mean — was that good or bad? I glanced over to see her shake her head in wonder.

Malkie's face fell. "What?" "A stomach virus of some sort," I said breezily. "Very dramatic. Everyone's fine now."

“Look at this," she said, pointing to the screen. "See that? If we'd checked two days ago when you were originally scheduled, we would have missed this. But now — look."

"Shevy, you should have told me—"

I stared at the monitor, hardly breathing. It felt surreal. We sat together in joy-filled, awe-filled silence for a minute.

"Sometimes," Dr. Bernstein said quietly, "timing is everything."

"And what? You’d have come home to take care of them AND your newborn? No way. Seriously, Malkie. It was totally fine." Later, Duvid found me sitting in our suddenly quiet house. He sat down next to me. "Dr. Bernstein called. She wants to move forward this week. She said the timing worked out perfectly."

"Sometimes," Dr. Bernstein said quietly, "timing is everything."

I thought about Rochel's calm voice on the phone. About the rearranged appointments that somehow gave me exactly what I needed. About how the worst week of juggling had turned into the breakthrough we'd been waiting for.

"Perfectly," I repeated.

A couple days later, I brought the children home to Malkie.

Maybe my hiatus from my own journey — that week of putting someone else first — was exactly what needed to happen. Maybe Hashem works through stomach viruses and rescheduled appointments and sisters who need breaks.

"How was it?" Malkie asked, hugging each kid as I bent over her Doona to ooh and ahhh over her precious new one. "Were they okay? Were you okay?" I looked at my sister. Really looked at her. Saw the way she leaned back, looking more relaxed than I’d seen her in years. Saw her genuine smile. Saw her eyes, bright, open, missing her signature black circles. "Everything was great," I said. "Mommy, I threw up tons!" Yitzy announced proudly.

The room is silent. The team leans in, and… Suddenly, my phone rings. I glance at the screen and my stomach drops. “I’m sorry” I say, wincing, “but I really need to take this.”

Don’t get your hopes up, I tell myself. Whatever it will be, it’s ok. You’ll be ok—

“It’s good news.”

“Oy. Zeeskeit. You need me to come now?” (Now???)

Good news. After 4 long years, GOOD NEWS. But: The doctor would like to see you today. Can you come in now? And suddenly, my work is on the back burner. Because FINALLY, after all these years of waiting, there’s a chance. There’s hope.

“Yes. Please Mommy. Come now. I don’t feel good.” He hiccups, forcing down a sob. And, suddenly, my work is on the back burner. Because all I can hear is my sweet, long-awaited baby. Burning up with fever. Alone and scared.

I wrap up my meeting in a flurry, gathering my purse, my keys, my coat as I excuse myself. Then I’m on my way, racing to embrace this welcome interruption.

Four unexpectedly bumpy rides that turned into precious new starts — and iconic stories of chizuk — as shared by “Bonei Olam Graduates.”

‘SNOW JOKE January 22, 2005: The day of my long-awaited appointment had arrived. And with it, a storm that dumped over a foot of snow across every road and surface in NYC.

The wind howled. Snow rained down in fluffy blankets that made it hard to see a few feet from the front window. Chasdei Hashem, we called Bonei Olam and were reassured — the appointment would still be proceeding. My husband and I bundled up, and I packed up the car while he dug it out. Then off we went, slowly, carefully. Pulling over to the shoulder of the highway every 30 minutes to physically clear the gathering snow across the front windshield. When we finally arrived, the parking lots were closed, so my husband dropped me off at the hospital entrance to circle for parking. I struggled through the crunching piles of snow, curl-

ing against the wind to make it through the spinning doors alone. He circled for an hour. He never ended up joining me inside. When I was done, he was waiting at the entrance with his double blinkers on, examining the back of his car in dismay. The trunk was completely crumpled in where a van had swiped him — then driven off. You can’t make things like this up. My heart sunk. I just had the worst feeling. “It shouldn’t be this hard. Maybe Hashem’s trying to tell us something.” “Yes,” he answered confidently, “he’s telling us ‘lefum tzara agra’.” “What ‘lefum tzara agra’? It’s BEEN tzara agra,” I wailed, “this day was something else.” But I’ve never been happier to say I was wrong. A few months later I welcomed my precious daughter, my world.

FOURTH TIME’S THE CHARM It was the end of our 3rd round. We’d experienced the worst possible outcome over, and over…and now over again. Each attempt, we had started hopeful, clinging to the confident reassurances from our medical team that chances were high. But, despite our tefillos, Hashem had said no. And I was d. o. n. e. Completely spent, physically and emotionally. It had been years of back-to-back, non-stop appointments, of medications, of being poked and jabbed at like a pincushion. I couldn’t do this anymore. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be a mother. But my heart was so tired. I was so tired. “We can’t give up,” my husband pleaded, but I didn’t know how I would find the strength. “I can’t make the decision for you,” my Bonei Olam counselor told us. “Only you can know if you’re at the limit. But you should know: you’re not the first couple I’ve seen that had this many failures, and b”H are now parents.” “Ok.” I finally said, “just one more time.” That one more time is now my identical twins. I couldn’t be more grateful.

It was a comedy of errors that had me double-booking my treatment the day of my brother’s wedding. I was supposed to have gone in two weeks earlier. I planned everything 6 weeks ahead, just to be sure. But you know what they say: “Man plans and G-d laughs.” When our doctor said it was time to come in, it was also time for Yudi to tie the knot. So there I was, awkwardly trying to get out of the family’s group makeup appointment — “But WHY?” “Um, I found someone else I really like” “WHO?” “Ummmm you know. hahaha…” — and dodging increasingly anxious texts demanding to know where we were and WHEN we were coming to the hall — as I sat in a hospital gown 200 miles away. When the appointment was over, we got ready in the hospital to avoid unwanted questions at the hall. Imagine rushing through the hospital carrying a big, poofy, navy gown wrapped in plastic. Now imagine rushing back out in full-face makeup, glitzy jewels,

and a swirl of skirts. The stares of surprise from passersby were photo-worthy. I kept my tunnel vision up and poker face on until I jumped into the car to join my husband (who of course had only needed 5 minutes to change). Then off we raced to the hall, laughing hysterically in panic and hope. After three hours of bumper-to-bumper traffic, we arrived just in time to watch Yudi’s Kallah circle him under the chuppah. I paused at the back, closed my eyes, and davened from the bottom of my heart for this treatment’s success — and for my brother and his Kallah to never have to experience the pain of childlessness. During the meal, I picked at my plate and sat out the dancing, ignoring the shocked stares, smiling and raising my water glass to my beckoning, swirling sisters. “I’m not feeling well,” I said honestly. And B”H, I didn’t feel well for the next few months, right up until I held my newborn daughter.

I thought I was one of the lucky ones. I knew, theoretically, 1 in 6 couples struggled. But I welcomed my first child a year after my chasunah, and was SURE more would follow soon. I never imagined, 6 years later, I’d still be waiting and praying and wondering if I should give my crib away or store it in my parents' basement. It took so long for me to acknowledge there was something wrong. Even longer to gather myself emotionally and start thinking next steps.

Soon, I was lost in the never-ending research of doctors, centers, treatments, trying to decide who I should meet first (and trying not to panic over what just that first consult cost.) I tried one treatment, then the next. Unsure, but needing to do something. The costs racked up, alongside my confusion. I was drowning. Way out of my depth. And completely, utterly alone. It never crossed my mind to reach out to Bonei Olam. I just assumed they were for couples awaiting their first. Next to them, what was my pain, my need, my dream? I think I could have carried on like this for years, but it was my husband who was brave enough to make the first call on our behalf. He saw an ad for Bonei Olam, and innocently, without a second thought…called. At first I felt betrayed — how could he not KNOW? Bonei Olam wasn’t for couples like us. But I was so wonderfully wrong, and my feelings soon melted into relief. Suddenly, everything changed. It was like stepping into a warm, reassuring hug. Within weeks, I had a medical referral and an appointment at a top clinic, with a steep discount on treatments, and an interest-free loan to cover the remaining costs. 2 years later, I (finally) gave my daughter a sibling. And I couldn’t be more grateful.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BONEI COUNSELOR 6:45 AM Sarah's phone buzzes. It's not her alarm — it's a text from a couple in California. They just got results. The treatment failed. Again. She reads the message twice, takes a breath, and types back: "I'm so sorry. Call me when you're ready. We're not giving up." She's learned not to wait until office hours. Pain doesn't keep to a schedule — so neither does she.

8:23 AM The Bonei Olam office is already humming. Three volunteers huddle around a desk, cross-referencing specialists in Jersey. A couple needs a second opinion by Thursday. Moshe, a full-time counselor for special cases, is in his office, door closed, on hold with an insurance company — has been for fifteen minutes — fighting for a pre-authorization that should have been approved weeks ago. "Fourth time I've called about this case," he mutters to himself, still on hold. "But they'll approve this. They always do. Eventually." 10:15 AM A new intake form comes through. Married eight years. Two failed cycles. Savings depleted. Rachel, who's been with Bonei Olam for six years, picks up the phone to get more details. The stories might look familiar at first glance, but she knows that every case, every couple, is different.

1:40 PM For Sarah, lunch is a protein bar nibbled while reviewing a medical file. A couple in Boro Park is being advised to try a different protocol. It’s more expensive, but their doctor thinks it's their best shot. She runs the numbers against the chances, then taps on R’ Bochner’s door. "Let's make it work," R’ Bochner says. 2:18 PM A mazel tov email is forwarded to the office. Baby boy, 7 lbs 3 oz, born this morning in Monsey. The details have been removed by his counselor, and he’s identified only by his case number for privacy. The mother's note is short: "We couldn't have done this without you." But the meaning and sincerity behind the words cuts deep. Most people in the office recognize the case number. It’s been around for over six years. The simcha is palpable; as if it were family. "That's number 14,000-something," Sarah says, grinning. "Fourteen thousand and seven," Rachel corrects. She keeps count. 4:03 PM Rachel is on the phone with a woman who's crying so hard she can barely speak. Her fourth attempt failed yesterday. She's thirty-nine. She's terrified she's running out of time. Rachel doesn't rush her. Doesn't offer platitudes. Just listens. The time for encouragement will be another day. Never in my life have I ever had a seatmate like this. Someone so completely unaware of their surroundings. So utterly disruptive. Right from the start, he took up my entire armrest, spilling over into my personal space. 15 minutes in, he complained he was bored — as if it was my job to entertain him! I put on my earphones, hoping to listen to a shiur, but he kept asking

me questions, telling me stories, talking my ear off practically nonstop the entire flight from JFK to MIA. He spilled his drink on me, not once, but TWICE, and didn’t bother to apologize. Then he fell asleep with his head on my shoulder. I think he might even have drooled a bit. I’ve never had a seatmate quite like him. Such a tiny person, who overtook my seat, my life, and my heart.

We asked 3 of our brightest Stars to spill their best-kept strategies. Here's what they shared:

STELLAR SECRETS

A SOFTER SELL A reserved person, Miriam* doesn’t fundraise. Not even for her children’s schools. Bonei Olam is her one exception — because she still remembers what it feels like to wait for a child, and what a difference it made to have Bonei Olam in her corner. Each year, Miriam raises around $10,000, one conversation at a time. "I’ve found that it’s not about being the loudest or the flashiest," she says. "It's about being persistent and nice. Keep following up politely, pressure-free. Most people mean to donate. It’s just about them finding the 5 minutes to do it.”

LITTLE WINS ADD UP Chavie* works full-time as a graphic designer, cares for her mother, and still somehow manages to keep six kids fed, clothed, and (mostly) on time to school. So when her friend suggested she join the Stars campaign, her first thought was: Are you kidding me? Her second thought was about her sister — waiting for almost 8 years. The second thought won out. "I figured I'd give it a shot in my sister’s zechus," Chavie says. "Worst case, I'd raise a little money and move on with my life."

She raised over $2,500, pleasantly surprising herself. “I didn’t have a lot of time. So I allocated 15 minutes every night to do it. And whether it was $18 or $180, EVERYONE who donated got a personal thank you from me. Not everyone can give a lot. But people’s willingness to feel and give for the cause is so special. Being part of Klal Yisroel is so special. I was totally blown away by how many gave.” And the best part of all? Her sister just welcomed a baby boy.

COUSINS WHO CAMPAIGN TOGETHER, STAY TOGETHER When Elkie*, Sarah*, and Tzirel* decided to team up for the campaign, they made a pact: If they were going to do it, it had to be fun. They started a group chat to celebrate the wins, big and small. Voice noted each other pep talks. Shared what worked and what didn’t. Screenshot the numbers as they climbed. They turned the whole thing into a group adventure. "We laughed so much that month," Tzirel says. "And it really brought us together in a way we haven’t been since we were teens." Together, they raised $22,000 — the cost of one full treatment. And headed to the Stars retreat with a shared song in their heart. "We're already planning next year," Elkie says with a grin. "And my 2 sisters have asked to join in."
