Take the Yosef Baruch Fund, dedicated by Avery and Toby Eisenreich, in memory of Toby’s father, Mr. Yossi Jacobowitz, a”h. Yosef Baruch is literally translated as “increase” and “blessed” – and in the short time since its inception, it has brought about so much blessing!

Already, there are healthy children and happy parents and parents-to-be, thanks to its remarkable work.

The fund supports Bonei Olam’s Comprehensive Chromosomal Screening project - a program that grants couples struggling with chromosomal disorders the chance to realize their dreams.

The establishment of the fund is a fitting memorial. Mr. Jacobowitz increased blessing throughout his life. Just being in his presence was a blessing – for he imbued the atmosphere with warmth and joy; and bettered people’s lives with his tzedakah, chesed, and ahavas Yisroel.

His legacy lives on. The Eisenreich’s dedication of the fund perpetuates Yossi Jacobowitz’s life in the most meaningful way. For Mr. Jacobowitz, who treasured each moment and lived life to the fullest, would no doubt take great joy in knowing that the fund established in his memory adds fullness and joy to so many lives.

Did you ever read about a spy who lives a secret life; who takes on a whole make-believe persona, holding down a job, shopping for groceries, and hanging out with friends; but it’s all a cover for his real story?

Here’s the thing.

And all around me, there are kids and school buses and baby stores, and I squelch the bile in my throat and wonder if I’ll ever reach the day when there’ll be a child in my life and I’ll be able to walk the streets free, without my secret hanging over me like a dangling dagger, threatening to destroy my life.

It’s all a hoax.

I’m not who you think I am. Because I am dealing with infertility.

You wouldn’t know it. I work so hard to keep my secret safe. It’s easier for me to deal with if I don’t have to give anyone updates or divulge sensitive information or be looked upon as “having a problem.” I don’t want to be on the receiving end of your pity, either. I’d rather you think I’m the same Rivky you always knew.

So I live this double life. On the outside, I’m my boss’ trusted personal assistant; the family member who plans wacky games for the Chanukah party; the neighbor you can count on for emergency babysitting services (ouch!).

But then there’s the other side of my life. My cloak-and-dagger existence, and the burden of carrying top-secret information wherever I go.

This secret is a shadow that never leaves me; that tinges everything grey.

A family simcha, a Yom Tov, even a stroll down

It’s excruciating, this double existence. Six weeks ago, I needed to go for treatment. The timing was the worst possible. My boss was in the middle of an audit and my sister was making her first Bar Mitzvah, but I had no choice. This was our chance to have a baby. I had to make it work.

So I swallowed hard and squared my shoulders and went in to my boss’ office, trying with all my might to look like I hadn’t a care in the world, and announced that I was taking a week off. He looked at me in surprise and said, “Now?” And I nodded and said, “My husband surprised me with tickets for my birthday.” He said, “I really can’t spare you now.”

I started to sweat and my heart began to thump and I thought it would be such a relief to just let it out; to tell him that my life, my future, was hinging on his answer. But I got a hold of myself. This was my secret we were talking about. I wasn’t going to give it away. So I called upon my drama skills (I was a tree in my second grade Tu B’shevat play) and smiled the sweetest smile and said, “My husband is

going to be sooo disappointed.”

And in my heart of hearts, I whispered, “Hashem, please make him let me.”

By some miracle, he shrugged and said OK – but I still had to deal with my sister. And my mother.

That took a whole different set of skills that involved faking a fever and saying my husband couldn’t come to the Bar Mitzvah because he wasn’t leaving me alone. Oh, and telling my mother not to bring me supper, because we had ordered in.

So... how do I get the courage to play this charade, day after day after day?

It’s because there’s a person in my life who makes it possible. I call her my ‘special agent’. Besides for arranging my treatments - and making sure they’re paid for she’s my confidant, my lifeline, the only one who knows what’s really going on behind my carefree exterior. I tell her things I can’t tell my own mother. And that’s saying a lot.

I live with the hope that one day soon, my treatments will be successful, and I’ll be able to go back to being the Rivky you know, for real.

But I’ll always know that the person who is the Ribbono Shel Olam’s messenger, the person who makes it possible for me to keep my chin up throughout this lessthan-thrilling spy story, is my Bonei Olam counselor.

Shabbos Totty for Real Avrumi Lunger grew up with a dream: he wanted to be a Shabbos Totty. Not a little-boy Totty who wore a fuzzy toy shtreimel and cut a fake challah with a plastic knife. No, he wanted to be a real Totty with a real Shabbos table, surrounded by a real wife and family.

His dream came true.

This paraplegic hero and his wife just celebrated their son’s pidyon haben. This is their story.

No one ever cut Avrumi Lunger any slack. They never told him, “you don’t have to clear the table,” or “you don’t need to wash the dishes.” They didn’t even help him get dressed. Oh, they could have let him get away with it. They could have treated him with kid gloves and waited on him hand and foot, like a prince who can’t do a thing for himself. It would certainly have been easier, at least some of the time. But that would have been crippling.

As it is, this personable yungerman is paralyzed and wheelchair bound. But he has a can-do attitude that compensates in large part for his disabilities. He was brought up with this mindset; a stance that served him well ever since a childhood bout with meningitis and a poorly-inserted spinal tap left him unable to move from the waist down.

It wasn’t easy to grow up disabled – to be the kid who couldn’t go up the stairs, couldn’t run around at recess time, couldn’t dance at weddings. He always felt different. But though he’s stuck in a wheelchair, Avrumi refuses to go through life as a spectator. He’s always in the center of the action, surrounded by loving friends and family.

Everyone was there, and everyone was crying. You could have washed the floor with tears!

But they were tears of joy. For this was the ultimate triumph — to be there and watch Avrumi carry his beautiful baby, bedecked in gold and diamonds, on a shiny silver tray...

members recall. They reminisce about little Avrumi coasting around the house on a skateboard-like contraption. “He was such fun. He pushed himself with his arms, and got into everything. He was just like all of us. We ran, he rode.” It was the same in yeshiva.

“We told the rebbe, ‘Avrumi is no different than anyone else in the class. He has to be on time and do his homework.’” It wasn’t easy to administer this tough-love style of parenting. But it was farsighted.

His father recalls “I would tell him to take out the garbage, and then I’d watch him maneuver his wheelchair, schlep the bag out of the can, and carry it out to the street. It would have been easier for me to just do it myself, but then he wouldn’t have learned anything.” He pauses.

“When he wasn’t looking, I’d cry for him. I had real rachmanus, not false pity.”

And so, Avrumi learned that he is only as disabled as he allows himself to be. To this day, his friends love him for it. He is never the nebach, never the odd one out. Instead, with his outgoing, cheerful personality, he’s the life of the chevrah. Using his upper body to compensate for his legs, he’s become a pro at many things. He works as a bookkeeper, volunteers for

His wife Chanie has her own set of challenges. Born in Argentina with a spinal condition, she gets around on crutches. Her parents are Chabad shluchim.

Like Avrumi, she is always positive - and was brought up knowing that she couldn’t use her disability as an excuse or a reason to feel sorry for herself.

One incident stands out in her mind.

“When I was in sixth grade, I needed to have both of my legs casted,” she says. “I came back to school in a wheelchair – without my Chumash homework. When my teacher asked for it, I pointed to my legs, as if that explained it. But my teacher made me bring it in the next day.” The lesson she learned that day went way beyond the pesukim on her homework sheet.

“You’re mishpacha, you’re family,” he said through his tears. “That’s why I’m calling you now. You helped make this possible.” And he laughed and cried and thanked Rabbi Bochner again and again and again. Just before Chanukah, the couple celebrated a monumental simcha: their son’s pidyon haben. One person at the simcha described the scene.

“Wherever we go, we’re different - me with my wheelchair, she with her crutches,” he says. “There are so many things we can’t do. But to wait for a child? That was too hard to deal with.” Avrumi stresses that although he was impatient, he never lost hope.

They couple was blessed with exceptional siyata dishmaya. In a short while, they were on their way to parenthood – and although it was 5 AM when their baby made his grand entrance, Rabbi Bochner was one of the first people Avrumi called to share the news.

Avrumi’s and Chanie’s shidduch was orchestrated with the help of Rabbi Bochner, who remained closely involved with the couple. At their tnoyim, he gave the beaming chosson his personal cell phone number, as well as permission to call at any time, day or night. Avrumi considers that his best wedding gift. Rabbi Bochner assisted the couple in many ways, and provided guidance that made it easier for them to establish their home despite their disabilities. Sometime after their marriage, Avrumi and his wife began to feel different again. They wanted nothing more than to have children.

“Mr. Fuchs was determined to help us, no matter what it would take,” he says. “He got us into the best doctors, and assured us that Bonei Olam would fund our treatment. It was amazing – the way he took the time to answer every question, and consulted with rabbonim and doctors for us.”

It was this can-do attitude that led him to reach out to Rabbi Bochner when he had a question about genetics. Like many others who call Bonei Olam before going into a shidduch, he wanted to know the implications of marrying someone with a certain condition. As things turned out, that shidduch never got past the asking stage. But some time later, Avrumi got engaged.

“I know Rabbi Bochner. I knew he would help. I felt assured that we were in the best of hands.” Rabbi Bochner connected the couple with Mr. Fuchs, one of Bonei Olam’s top counselors, who gave the case his all – as he does for all the couples under his care. Avrumi is effusive in his praise for the counselor.
