Dear Friend of Bonei Olam, On a clear night not long ago, I gazed up to the heavens and saw stars – thousands of brilliant stars twinkling at me from way up high. I thought to myself, “this is the very same sky that Hashem showed to Avraham Avinu thousands of years ago, when He promised him children.”

It occurred to me that if every Jewish child is a star, then we at Bonei Olam are bringing stars to light.

Every year on Rosh Hashanah, as I walk to shul, I make a cheshbon hanefesh. I think to myself – how am I better this year than last? There is, unfortunately, not nearly as much personal growth as I would have liked. But I tell myself – this year, there were some 750 new Bonei Olam babies.

There are 750 new stars brought into waiting arms. And with that thought, I feel ready to start a new year.

Today there are close to 7,500 Bonei Olam stars. They twinkle, they shine, they transform empty homes and hearts to light-filled worlds. And behind those Twinkling Stars are the people who brought them to light.

You are one of those people. With every dollar you donated, every treatment you sponsored, every Bonei Olam event you attended, you brought a distant star to life.

But our work is far from over.

Because right here in our midst, in nearly every family and on nearly every street, there are couples who search the heavens for their own twinkling stars.

They yearn to embrace a child; to raise him; to delight in the shine in his starry eyes. They have been waiting for two, eight, eighteen years. We have spent many thousands of dollars on helping them –

he first time any of them brought up “the topic” was after Rivky’s baby’s bris. They had walked home together, and he’d gotten all emotional about the baby’s name.

“So there’s finally a name Chaim for my zeide,” he said. “I’m so happy.” She’d answered, “Uh huh,” and he’d continued. “If I would have a baby now, I’d really want to give the name too.”

“Uh huh,” she had said again, as if it was the only word she knew. He’d looked at her, puzzled.

“Is something wrong?” he asked.

“Nothing,” she’d said. “Just -” and the words came tumbling out.

“Oh, I wish we’d be having a baby already.” She’d swallowed then and given a little laugh that sounded like a cough. “I’m overdoing things, I guess. I mean, it’s not even been a year.”

But two years and many conversations later, her wish still hadn’t come true. And it was getting harder to ignore the way she felt about it. She was surprised

Or Purim, when she had to ooh and aah over her sister’s kids’ costumes and keep up her reputation as Best Aunt Ever, even though she felt like running into a room and locking the door and not coming out until Shavuos.

Then one day, her husband brought up a new idea. It’s time to call Bonei Olam, he said, and she shuddered. Calling Bonei Olam meant they had a Problem – capital P. And she so badly wanted to stick her head under her pillow and make believe everything was just fine, thank you. Still, there was no denying the Problem, so one day she called.

And one day a few weeks later, she had an appointment.

And even though the fee for her care was $18,000, and there was no way, no how, she could pay that amount, Bonei Olam had made sure everything would work out. They had negotiated with the doctor and made a payment plan and paid the bill!

Funding Treatment

The average cost of a single treatment is between $18,000 to $25,000. Many couples need several treatments, with some needing more expensive procedures.

Bonei Olam’s mission is to ensure that funds never stand in the way of treatment. Our policy is generally to help a couple as long as there is even a slight medical chance that they can have a child.

so much effort and money to help. Really, she and her husband were one couple. If they did this for everyone who called… well, that’s a lot.

In any case, she didn’t know what they would’ve done if not for Bonei Olam. She did know one thing.

They would never be able to do this themselves. The balance in her savings account was $936.27. With her salary as a teacher and her husband’s paltry paycheck, they weren’t going to see bigger numbers any time soon. She shuddered. That meant – without Bonei Olam, she would never have a chance at a baby.

So this help from Bonei Olam, it wasn’t just money. It was her life, her future. That stroller coming down the street, the tiny shoes in the store window, the yellow school bus rumbling past them – maybe – maybe soon – no, she wouldn’t go there.

It’s a good thing she didn’t. Because a few weeks later, she was back at square one. The treatment had failed. It was over. All her dreams were just that – dreams. They’d floated away like a helium balloon,

The doctor had said she had a good chance of having a baby. But they couldn’t do another treatment – not for thousands more! And she wouldn’t be so pushy as to ask Bonei Olam again. Oh, there were other organizations. Bikur cholims and such. But they mostly told her to call Bonei Olam.

She couldn’t bring herself to do that.

So she clenched her lips and squared her shoulders and went to work and cleaned her kitchen and went to work and cleaned her kitchen and tried to push the thought out of her mind. It lasted for two days. On the third, her Bonei Olam counselor called to hear how things were going.

And a few weeks later, she was back at the doctor – with Bonei Olam’s help.

“We won’t stop helping you, as long as it takes,” the counselor said. “As long as there’s any hope, even if there’s just a tiny chance at success, we’ll continue to make sure you get the care you need.”

Bonei Olam operates in seven countries and four continents. The global reach of Bonei Olam puts all the world’s fertility expertise at the organization’s fingertips.

If there is a specialist in the UK who can help an American couple, Bonei Olam will know about it – and connect the two.

Yet as large as Bonei Olam has become, it remains mostly a local program. Each office has its own counselors, medical advisors, and rabbonim; each office does its own fundraising, and helps couples in its own environs.
