Because waiting often feels so lonely to couples, when the reality is quite the opposite. Countless couples around them are facing similar struggles. In fact, statistics show 1 in 6 couples experience this lonely wait at some point. Perhaps you’ve experienced the feeling firsthand. If not, you’ve surely watched a couple you love wait month after month and wished you could do something to help. The truth is, waiting couples DO need our help. A Class Act As told by Bonei Olam’s founder, Rabbi Schlomo Bochner

The remarkable true story of how 28 classmates rallied together to bring a child into the world — overcoming deeplyset preconceived beliefs, personal worries, and all medical odds.

So, there I was. Sitting in a shul basement in Lakewood, completely lost. All around me, 28 faces wore similar, confused expressions. What was this meeting about? Yesterday, I received a pleading invitation from a long-time Bonei Olam “client,” asking me to attend a small parlor meeting in Lakewood: “It’s so important. Please, R’ Bochner. I need you there.” I simply couldn’t refuse such a request, and so, despite it being on a busy weeknight, I made the long trip from Boro Park. Finally, the man who had invited me walked to the dais at the front of the room. His steps were strong and energetic despite his greying beard. He tapped the mic, and leaned forward. “You’re probably wondering why I called 16

you here tonight.” Around me, there were some chuckles and nods. I found myself nodding too. “Rabboisai. Here are the facts: 25 years ago, we were all classmates. We started cheder together, we learned together, we grew up together, went to camp together. We did everything together. The only difference between us today is that everyone else here has had children — some even grandchildren! — everyone in this room but me.” Suddenly, this strong, tall man’s voice cracked. You could feel the discomfort in the room by the rustling of coats, the shifting creak of seats. He took a deep breath and continued. “You’re probably wondering why I called you all here. What do I want from you? The

fact is, Bonei Olam has already spent so much money on us over the past 20 years. I don’t feel I can ask for more. But I still want to try one more time. “This time, I'm approaching you , my dear classmates, for help. It's my last hope... I don’t want to take from Bonei Olam this time. I need the help to come from YOU. “With that said, I would like to call up Rabbi Bochner from Bonei Olam to give a few words about the importance of your help.” The room was deathly silent. All eyes turned to me. I wasn’t prepared. I didn’t even know where to look. I stood up slowly and began to walk to the front of the room, forcing one foot in front of the other, even though every part of me wanted to run away. Near the stage, three men were whispering

easy. Despite all that, maybe it just wasn’t enough. But maybe — just maybe! — this time, when a group of men have true mesiras nefesh, it will finally be enough!!

The counselor’s joy could be felt across the line, “There is indeed,” he said, “very good news. There will be a mazel tov in just a few weeks."

“I am not Hashem. I can’t tell you if he and his wife will or won’t have a child. I CAN tell you that there are many couples like this, in a similar matzav, that HAVE had children.”

It took me a minute to absorb the news. “Are you sure?” I asked, “are you SURE you’re not mixing him up with another client?”

I said only a few more words. I didn't feel like myself. I finished off with one more “maybe this will finally change things,” then I exited the hall as quickly as I could. *** With everything on my plate, I soon forgot this incident. But Hashem hadn’t. Several months later, I was in Lakewood to meet someone about a fundraising initiative. I had just left my car and was walking up to the door when a car turned the corner of the block. A sixth sense crawled its way up my back. I felt that car needed me. Why? I don’t know, it was just an ordinary car service, nothing special. But still, I paused on the bottom step of the porch and turned to wait. The car approached and beeped loudly, cheerfully. A head popped out of the passenger window.

I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t have a direction or a plan. I whispered a short tefillah to the Ribono Shel Olam to help me find the right words as I took the stage. I looked around at all the closed, guarded faces and took a deep breath. “Listen to me carefully,” I said, keeping my voice calm. Steady. “All these years I ran around from door to door, gathering for this man. Believe me, funding doesn’t come

I walked over to the car window to give him Shalom Aleichem and saw he was smiling from ear to ear. He saw my calm face and asked: “Doesn’t the office ever update you on cases?” I said “No, never. It’s our policy to never share personal information; we’ll only discuss medically important information amongst us.”

“No, R’ Bochner, I’m sure.” I hung up the phone, tucked it away inside my pocket, then headed up the stairs with an extra lift in my step. *** A few weeks later a healthy baby boy was born. Of course, I came to the bris. When I heard the news, I had begged him to invite everyone who had been at the parlour meeting, 10 months ago. At the seudah, he asked me to say a few words. I got up and gazed around at the room, looking every last one of the classmates in the eye. “Chevra,” I began, “I want to tell you something. Over the last couple decades, Bonei Olam has spent over $100,000 to help this man, but still was not Matzliach. When all the doors were closed and sealed, it was YOU who brought the yeshuah. “10 months ago, I didn’t want to tell you how low his chances were. And now, look what happened!!! When you got together to help, when you showed Hashem you shared in your friend’s pain. Look what a nes you brought about!” Spontaneously, we all began to dance. The father pulled me into the center of dancers. We were both crying. Then he bent over and said, “R’ Bochner, I just have one question. Can you sponsor me another baby?” I laughed. He laughed. We laughed and cried and danced together.

He nodded in understanding but his eyes twinkled. “R’ Bochner. Do me a favor and ask my counselor where I’m up to. I give you 100% reshus.” And with that, the car pulled away. I immediately reached for my phone and dialed the counselor. “Is there by any chance good news about so-and-so?” 17

Just another story... The story I’m about to share is something you probably won’t even think deeply about. It’s just a nice little story to scan over coffee and cake. But I want you to know: for me, it’s NOT just another nice little story. It’s my life. It’s real. And it happened in 2022, not back in the time of Tanach. About a year ago, Bonei Olam was asking for volunteers to help raise funds. Honestly, my first instinct was to say no. It didn’t sound like something for me. I’m a very shy person by nature, and the thought of reaching out to people for donations was so far out of my comfort zone, it was almost laughable. I immediately put the idea out of my mind, but it kept coming back. I couldn’t help but to think

about my sister who had been waiting for children for many years. The thought kept nagging at me until I couldn’t ignore it anymore. So I called Bonei Olam and offered to volunteer. I fundraised for nearly 2 months, and believe me, it was HARD. Sometimes, people would give kindly, and sometimes people would ignore my calls and texts and messages. I felt so awkward. I really had to push myself. But I kept at it, thinking of my sister who loves children so much, and yet didn’t have one of her own. Every day, I’d force myself to pick up the phone. I davened that Hashem should see how hard this was for me, and remember her in this zechus.

“Just” another miracle, in direct zechus of supporting Bonei Olam. Just one of the hundreds of stories we’ve received from donors and volunteers over the years. And you know what? My sister had a precious baby boy just a few weeks ago. Let me tell you, I arrived at the bris with wings on my feet. Yes, of course it was a tremendous Simcha in and of itself — my sister FINALLY had a baby after 8 years. But it was an even bigger simcha to me, knowing the secret part I had played. I was so grateful I had found the strength to contribute zechusim towards this beautiful, long-awaited miracle from Hashem. After seeing a yeshua like this, I’ve committed to raising again this year in zechus of my sisterin-law, who is also waiting. May we hear good news there soon!

Tzvi is a very serious learner, patient, put together, with sterling middos. Every night he sits and learns with another boy in his class who’s not as strong. He’s also now preparing for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah (Zos Chanukah!!). His voice fills the whole apartment when he practices, and my heart sings with him. Thank you so much for reaching out. Life gets busy, and it's easy to lose sight of what a miracle our children are. It was nice to take a step back and just appreciate our miracles.

He’s doing really well in Yeshiva B”H and has lots of friends. While we’re not comfortable sharing a picture for privacy, we’ll describe him to you so readers can imagine. He has light brown hair and hazel eyes. He’s tall, skinny, and currently has a scratch on his forehead from whoknows-where (and ALWAYS scratches on elbows and knees of course!) He just got his top two adult teeth in and they’re too big for his face in the cutest possible way. He is just DELICIOUS you could eat him up, if he would sit still enough to let you.

I can’t stand the gap that’s come between us, while I navigate 4 children under 6 years old, and you navigate your thriving business. When did life get so complicated? First, there was shock. Next, disbelief. And finally, a heavy, heart-rending grief, the depths of which I’d never felt before. I carried it with me for months, like a stone settled on my heart. They say time heals all wounds. And in a way, it’s true. Time sands down its edges, tucks it away so you’re no longer thinking of your pain at every waking moment. But I don’t think a mother ever forgets — and for me, each passing year was yet another painful reminder of what could have been. I yearned for a child to make me feel whole again. Instead, I faced another 4 long, empty years of fear and uncertainty. Back then, we didn’t have organizations like Bonei Olam. We didn’t have the resources and systems that exist now. Uncle Zalmy and I were alone, scraping and saving and trying to navigate appointments. I remember your Bubby & Zaidy nudging: “nu, when are you giving us nachas?” I would bite my tongue and hold back tears. Till the doctors discovered the issue. So “simple”, and yet so life-changing. I wonder. Me sharing all this with you, do you find it helpful or painful? I don’t want to hurt you more. I just want you to know you’re not alone. One day, I know in my heart. You and Yanky WILL be parents. And until that day, I’m here for you in any way you need.

Right up to the moment I held him in my arms, I was still holding my breath. Still praying that nothing would go wrong.

I’d spent too many years holding back my heart so it wouldn’t shatter into pieces. Tonight, I held him close and just listened to his breathing. I felt the rise and fall of his tiny chest and it was as though I was waking from a dream. He sighed and curled up against me, so trusting, so tiny, so helpless — and all mine. “Hello,” I whispered down at his tiny head, “I’m your mommy.” Suddenly, tears spilled down my cheeks, melting away the last protective walls around my heart. I looked across the room at my husband. He was wiping away tears of his own. “And hello to you too, Tatty,” I said. “Hello, Mommy,” he answered, and his eyes twinkled.

To all the months of trying not to get our hopes up, and yet not wanting to give up hope. To the endless ups, downs, and tears that have FINALLY reached their end. What an unexpected journey. You were there with me throughout. Thank you Hashem. Thank you Bonei Olam. Thank you donors. If you saw his precious fingers, his tiny nose, I know you’d agree: He’s priceless! Stars Auction of the

There’s nothing easy about fundraising – it can be awkward soliciting from strangers, and reaching out to family and friends is a time-consuming ordeal.

Yet, every year, there’s a special group of women 1000+ strong, all over the world, who voluntarily undertake to do so for Bonei Olam. We call them our “Star Raisers.” Who are they? And what keeps them at it, year after year after year?

DINA When her coworker first mentioned the idea of joining the campaign, Dina*, the manager of a large kids' clothing boutique, was hesitant. After all, she was busy! The idea of pledging to raise a large sum of money in a short span of time just didn’t seem possible. But after giving the idea some more thought, Dina decided to take the plunge and join. Her niece had been waiting over 6 years to have a child, and Dina hoped this would be a zechus for her niece and nephew to finally cuddle a precious baby of their own. Dina gave the campaign her all, calling upon her large network of family and friends to achieve her goal. And a little over 9 months later, Dina called her coordinator to share the beautiful news – her niece was the proud mommy to an adorable set of twins!

CHAYA After raising $5,000 in her first year as a Star Raiser, Chaya* was hooked. “Knowing that every dollar was going to bring more children into this world, that those tiny babies and their future generations were all in my zechus was mindblowing,” Chaya says. With the impact of her mission driving her, she joined the Stars campaign a second year, and then a third, each time raising increasingly incredible sums of money. By year number four, Chaya, together with a friend, raised a staggering $50,000. “In retrospect, it was a crazy goal”, Chaya says, “we hoped, but honestly never thought we’d reach it.” But, after a whirlwind of efforts and siyata dishmaya, they surpassed it! “Sitting at the STARs retreat that year with all the raisers, somehow tired and energized all at once…. seeing the impact of our hard work, really brought our massive accomplishment to life”, Chaya says.

C. U N G A R For every single raiser, joining the campaign is a labor of love, an investment of endless hours — with amazing returns. As Mrs. C. Ungar, the coordinator of the Star campaign’s Monsey chapter says: “We think we’re helping others — but in actuality, it’s a life insurance for Klal Yisroel’s future doros. And together, we’re bringing down the neshamos who’ll bring the geula.”

To our STAR raisers: They say that Stars come out at night. But you – our incredible Stars, shone both day and night. In moments snatched between work and family responsibilities. In precious hours after the chaos calmed down and the kids were tucked in. In the time you didn’t really have – you didn’t stop. Phone call after phone call. Writing and sending countless messages and emails. Spreading light and hope to Bonei Olam families everywhere.

More than opening your wallets, you open your hearts, joining forces with our Stars and the entire Bonei Olam team to create an immeasurable impact.
