Duvy! No Way!! PaPer wasn’t made for you, It’s way too small. it can’t hold all the beauty you bring to the world. i try to get you to be neater, quieter, contained. You can’t, you’re Duvy. you need big, more, and even more. Permission to get messy, no restrictions for sound. ice cream for breakfast, finger painting for lunch. i try to see all the colors, sometimes i get stuck in the browns. i put on my best angry face, but it fails. You look too cute. Marks on the wall will wash off; your chubby hands, paintsplattered, will leave the colors on my heart. next door the floors are empty of toys. Pristine gray walls sparkle. or maybe those walls are sheddIng tears?

Chaya Malowicki mrs. malowicki is truly beloved by all and as someone adoringly said of her “zi is der greste unav vus haltz zich der klenste” and that nO words could adequately depict her true essence. she is an entity onto herself with no duplicate; totally selfless seeking to make others feel good, be it with a good word or helping hand. age is not a factor, young and old are treated with equal love, care, patience and respect.

she was a mother like none other! words cannot adequately describe her… she was warm, loving, understanding and full of life! she spread sunshine and good cheer wherever she went. she was beloved by all who knew her. her positive attitude was contagious as she nurtured all those around her as well as her children and grandchildren with great love and wisdom. she was always ready to help her fellow Jews and the word “Others” was the most highlighted word in her personal dictionary. every Yid was precious to her and nothing was too difficult when attending anyone’s needs and wants. may she be a melitza yeshora for all of us and may we all merit shefa, bracha, V’hatzlocha. we miss you mommy, you are sorely missed,

Duvy!!! FOR rEal?! sure, there was a drIP of thIs, a sPot of that. Now, they pale in comparison. duvy was here! the fresh footprints proclaim. You run in and you run out. Oh, the places you go! And oh, the treasures you’ll bring back! Part of me wants to never clean this ruG. To keep your tiny footprints, to catch them quick. they mark the beginnings of a journey. a journey to where? I pray; to only good places, for good things. there will come a day, when you will go, more than come. And I will be left with the footprints in my mind. not every home boasts of soiled rugs and doors ajar, surprises found from arduous exploits. I cry for those who know the bitter loneliness, of rugs untrampled. Phantom traIls, leadIng nowhere.

Oh Duvy ! NOt agaiN ! I PIne for freedom. From the shackles of waiting piles. I let myself imagine that void. What would fill my time? I do a wash, and there it is, dirty again. day in, day out, never ending. Life’s wash cycle. Day in, day out, there’s more, more of Duvy - everywhere. I put him to bed with a kiss goodnight. Morning brings a new day. Like a wash, all is forgiven in water, sun and air. Women, wishing for the piles I so disdain, carrying empty baskets. Mine, overflowing. a gIft basket - I would never trade.

NoW thE MIlk ?! don’t even say It, because no one here cries over spilled milk. You squeal; I yell. I scold you for your messes, your loudness, your inquisitive nature. But you hold no grudge, returning my ire by plunging into an indulgent hug. Arms around my neck- wringing out boundless love. I am too hard on my soft-cheeked little boy. My test: to see the good, beyond the sloshing of milky wetness. I’m thankful to have this test. I think of those who don’t. my neighbor has her own tests. She waits for news, testing her faith. That’s all she has. Nothing to laugh at; no one to yell at. lIke mIlk, PaIn sPIllIng over.

Oh Duvy! the Not flOwers!! If a heart Is lIke a garden, mine has been plucked at. I wish I could capture that fleeting image, of my flowers in freeze frame, the pots lined up in the sun. Like glistening gems strung together on a chain. The wealth of blossoms, the hues I so treasure. stealthily, without warning, he appeared, petals and soil raining down like confetti, on enchanted ground. The flowers’ journey is no more. All they wished for was love and nurture. Brilliant hopes and tender wishes. A mother’s accomplishments, on butterfly’s wings My wildflOwer Duvy, fragrant and sweet; a joy to behold. My arms will hold him, my lips caress him, I say a prayer for all the tidy gardens, flowers standIng wItness In neat, untouched rows.

Duvy!! Seriously? You saw the table. It’s set for grown-ups. Did you throw the plate in protest? You had plans for something else? We all make plans... one day we’ll marry... raise a family. But that’s not always on the menu. Sometimes we don’t get what we order. In the pain, we hurl plates. Broken heartS. Porcelain shards. Life can be as frail as dishes, not so easy to glue back together. this table and its five chairs - it's where we eat, sing, connect, savor life... I thank hashem, mY plate Is full!

Duvy. I love you! Oh, Duvy. LOOk at yOu sLeeping sO bLissfuLLy. Your untamed curls splayed across your pillow, framing your pure, angelic face. Your sweet, rhythmic breath carrying me to a place of serenity, calmness, gratitude – and guilt. All is quiet now; images of the day flash through my mind. I’m sorry I snapped when you spilled the milk; looked askance when your laundry hit the pile. i’m sorry i yelled when i found the wall splattered with handprints, and the once-pristine white rug permanently soiled with pint sized footprints. I lost more than my cool when you ripped my flowers out. I lost perspective. Oh, Duvy! I love you just the way you are. As I tiptoe out, I stumble on your mud-caked shoes from this morning’s forays. I sigh, and I smile, anD i thank hashem fOr the gift Of yOu – just the way yOu are.

כל המתפלל בעד חברו והוא .צריך לאותו דבר הוא נענה תחילה If you are waiting for any Yeshua at all, Daven For Me may be the answer to your prayers. By matching up people in need of similar tefilos, this program encourages participants to set aside their own worries and say tehilim for one another. The beautiful concept of Daven For Me and I’ll Daven For You is rooted in the Talmudic dictum, “Kol Hamispaleil B’ad Chaveiro V’hu Tzarich L’oso Davar, Hee Ne’eneh T’chilah.” Because when you choose to focus your prayers on your fellow Jew’s needs, the impact in heaven is indelible.

Dear Friend, Duvy. He leaves a trail of havoc wherever he goes, with his paint-splattered hands and his muddy feet. Yet this pint-sized bundle of mischief, with his tousled blond curls and his angelic smile is the ultimate gift. With each glass of spilled milk and every broken plate comes the reaffirmation that Duvy is that most precious gift of all, a child whose very existence completes his parents, bringing them total and utter happiness. While for some the road to parenthood is smooth and uneventful, for others, the journey is a circuitous one, filled with obstacles and difficulties. Such was the case with Faigy, a beloved morah who lived in Bnei Brak. Year after year she lavished love and affection on her students, waiting for the day when she would earn the most coveted title of all – Mommy. Under Morah Faigy’s watchful eye her students blossomed and grew, moving on to the next grade and the next grade and the next, yet Morah Faigy stayed frozen in time, her fervent prayers seemingly unanswered. While Morah Faigy opened her heart and soul to her girls, doing her best to help each one rise to her fullest potential, there was one part of the day where Morah Faigy kept to herself: recess. It wasn’t that Morah Faigy didn’t enjoy her students’ antics during their short break or that she didn’t get along well with the other teachers. It was just that recess talk among the staff revolved around their children - whose toddler had just taken their first steps, whose son was having an upsherin and where was the best place to buy bows for their daughters’ hair. It was a painful reminder to Morah Faigy that she was continually denied membership to the exclusive club of motherhood. She found it easier and less uncomfortable to spend recess in solitude. One day, a young girl named Sarala, a student in Morah Faigy’s class, was enjoying recess in the schoolyard when she realized that she had accidentally left her ball in the classroom. While deep down inside Sarala knew that she needed a teacher’s permission to go back into the school building, that fact slipped her mind at that particular moment and she raced upstairs to her classroom. Opening the door quietly, Sarala was shocked to see Morah Faigy gazing out the window at the children down below, tears streaming down

her face. Slipping noiselessly out of the classroom, Sarala hurried back down to the schoolyard, determined to find some way to ease her beloved morah’s pain. In a hastily-called conference with her classmates, Sarala shared what she had seen. The girls began to speculate why Morah Faigy might be crying. Despite the fact that the girls were only 11 years old, the answer seemed obvious to them. Morah, like anyone else, desperately wanted a child of her own. While some of the girls continued about their day as if nothing had happened, Sarala was haunted by what she had seen, her concern evident on her face. Noticing that his daughter seemed troubled at the dinner table, Sarala’s father, a respected man in the Bnei Brak community, asked Sarala to share what was on her mind. “Tatty, what can someone do for a person who needs a yeshua?” asked Sarala. Sarala’s father pondered the question for a moment, an unusual one coming for a girl of that age, finally asking Sarala to tell him more about the situation. The story came out in a gush of words and tears: how she had left her ball upstairs, how she had seen Morah Faigy, standing forlorn in the corner, sobbing, how the girls had discussed what the problem might be, and how a group of determined 11 year olds were taking it upon themselves to somehow, some way, help Morah Faigy achieve her dream of motherhood. Impressed by his daughter’s compassion, Sarala’s father came up with a plan that he hoped would bring about the desired result. He told Sarala that she and all her classmates should take their pocket money each and every day, and instead of buying an ice cream, a cold drink or ices, they should put that money in a special pushka for Bonei Olam. He warned her that it wouldn’t be easy for the girls to forego their treats for weeks on end, but that with Hashem’s help, their mesiras nefesh would yield tremendous dividends. Sarala’s father looked down at his daughter, her eyes wide as she absorbed his words. “When the pushka is full, when the money is overflowing, that is when Morah Faigy will have her baby,” he said. Sarala rushed to school the next day, eager to put her father’s plan into action. The girls eagerly embraced the initiative and they designed a large,

beautiful pushka, placing it prominently in the classroom. When Morah Faigy saw the new addition to the room’s decor she asked where it had come from and Sarala told her the story of the pushka. Touched by the girls’ heartwarming gesture, Morah Faigy wiped away a tear, trying hard to control the overwhelming emotions that raged inside of her. If only it were that easy, that all it would take would be a pushka filled with coins to bring an end to her suffering. Taking a deep breath, Morah Faigy quieted her doubts and her sadness, focusing instead on her students. They were so innocent, so full of goodness and she gave them a smile, thanking them for keeping her in their hearts. Day by day, the girls sacrificed their sweets and their other indulgences, depositing every coin they had in the pushka. Some days the girls found it easy to give up on their snacks for Morah Faigy’s sake. Other days it wasn’t so easy. But with hearts that were bigger than their eleven year old bodies, the girls continued filling the pushka, which grew heavier and heavier with every passing day. One Friday morning, Morah Faigy entered her classroom, where she found her students singing and dancing. Despite her best efforts, she could not get the girls to take their seats until finally one girl pointed to the pushka, which was overflowing with coins. “Morah, you can have your baby now!” sang Sarala exuberantly, her entire being bursting with happiness. What can anyone possibly say at a moment like that? There are no words, no proper response, so Morah Faigy did what every good morah would do in a similar situation. She gave the girls a few more minutes to revel in the moment and giving them a loving smile, she settled them back in their seats, firmly tucking away her personal thoughts until she could reflect on them in private. Morah Faigy managed to hold back her tears until it was time to bentsh licht. As she stood with her eyes closed next to the two tall candles, a silent yet perpetual reminder that she and her husband had yet to be blessed with the ultimate gift, the river of tears broke free and Morah Faigy poured her heart out to her heavenly father. “Ribono Shel Olam, for so many months, my girls denied themselves their little treats and their snacks, taking their spending money and giving it to tzedaka as a zechus for me to have a baby. They believed so strongly that when the pushka overflowed, their prayers, and mine, would be answered. But how can I face them now? How can

I tell them that despite everything that they did, everything that they sacrificed, that nothing has changed?” Faigy was still crying over her candlesticks when her husband came home from shul and she told him everything that had happened: how her students tried so hard to tip the celestial scales in their favor, how they selflessly and wholeheartedly gave so much tzedaka to Bonei Olam wholly in her merit, and how sure they were that their successful tzedaka campaign would bring about a baby. Moved by his wife’s tears and overwhelmed by the dedication of her students, Faigy’s husband suggested that perhaps after so many years of marriage they should contact Bonei Olam and see if there was something that could be done for them. Uncomfortable with the notion of discussing personal issues with someone else, Faigy hesitated to call Bonei Olam; but with nowhere else to turn, Faigy’s husband reached out to Bonei Olam. Sometimes it just takes the right person to find the answer, someone who might pick up on a small detail that was overlooked by others. It was a doctor recommended by Bonei Olam who pinpointed the problem in Faigy’s case and ten months later, Faigy and her husband were blessed with the ultimate gift. After years of heartache and torrents of tears, Morah Faigy found herself with the title she had once only dreamed of: – Mommy. It was the gift of mesiras nefesh, as well as the gift of tzedaka, that made Faigy’s dream come true, a yeshua brought about by a group of eleven year old girls, who would let nothing stand in their way. While we often think of gifts as elaborate packages meant for special occasions, our lives are filled with gifts each and every day. The smile of a newborn, the loving embrace of a family, the ability to enjoy wonders of the world all around us, each of these is a gift, given to us by Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Each of us is capable of returning that favor by giving gifts of our own to everyone around us. Our beautiful sweet Duvy, he is a gift too, one of the over 5,000 babies born with the assistance of Bonei Olam. Won’t you give a gift of your own to Bonei Olam so that the many others out there like Morah Faigy can be blessed with the most incredible gift of all? Warmly,
Rabbi Schlomo Bochner
