Here at our magazine, we do everything we can to promote our advertisers.

We still ask the same prices as we did when we started up 56 months ago. We do not just put the adverts in, but give free internet exposure and try to promote businesses for free on the local forums.

If an advertiser is going through a temporary cash flow problem, we trust them to pay as soon as possible, to carry on their advert for them and to help their business. They eventually pay with the promised cheque that they were due to receive.

Everybody helps everybody.

It is a shame that some advertisers think they can get us to design and pay to print their advert without having to pay us. You would not buy a beer and not pay for it.......would you!!!

It stands to reason that we would not recommend anyone that cannot be relied upon to honour debts, so we do point other customers to more honourable businesses.

Hello and welcome to our September edition.

A bit of a rushed month for us at the magazine, as our printer shut down for two weeks during August, therefore giving us, one week less to produce our publication.

We would like to say a farewell to Dave our computerman, who has left us this month after contributing many articles for our readers. We wish him all the best for the future.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.

Just like us, I would image many of you get fed up with rubbish dumped by the bins and on the pavements. It is just the same for our Town Hall who meet every week with the bin people, taking photographs everywhere, where there are indiscriminate rubbish tippers. These areas are targeted and the cleaners go out and clear up the mess, only to see the same thing happen again and again.

Letters will be going out to communities and to commercial areas, that this is not acceptable, and fines will start to be issued, to those who treat our Gran Alacant as a ground for rubbish tipping.

The Town Hall do ask people, where possible, to always place your rubbish in the bins AFTER 9PM, this stops smells building up around rubbish areas.

If you do have furniture mattresses etc that you want dumped, ring 96 669 39 55 and they will come and collect it and take it away for you FOR FREE! Another major problem along the same lines is all of the dogs mess. As it is impossible to police it all, if you are concerned, you can, very discreetly photograph the offenders and take the picture to Loreto at our council Office.

She can then take action, without naming the photographer. Other than this, what can we do???

Last month we announced that there is to be a brand new Health Centre built. This

month the big news is that there is to be another school on Gran Alacant. Both of these new ventures are to be cited on the land on the map below.

The new school will be built on this new site. Permission has already been given by the Valencian Government. This school will cater for the same age ranges as the first school and should be able to cater for children from up the hill and the site school aready operating, to house children from down the hill, as much as is possible.

The medical centre plans look very good.

They are initial plans and are subject to changes, but are to be built in 4 areas under the same roof. One area for general health rooms, one especially for children,

which will include an indoor play area.

Each area will have its own toilet facilities. An area for bloods and pregancies, will will have its own exercise/gym area. Then the reception area. Each of the 4 sections will be built so that each area can be expanded if necessary in the future.

As you will see in an email to us. Some people are asking whether the dying trees from the post off to the Council offices can be replaced with trees other than pine. This we asked, but the contract with the people concerned, stipulated pine trees, so this cannot be changed.

It is good that people voice their opinon, as the 400 trees planted along the new pavements are under a contractor stipulating non pine trees, which is all down to the feedback to the Town Hall through our magazine. So, keep your ideas coming, they are taken note of where possible. Gran Alacant belongs to all of us.

Again on the cleaning front. Have you seen the small army of people in green overalls.

The Town Hall have brought in a contracter to clean up Gran Alacant green areas. The contracter has employed 45 out of work people to carry out this task.

In their first week they collected over 30,000 kilo of rubbish and are to be employed for a total of 3 months.

The contractor chosen to build the new Gran Alacant Park are set to begin work at the beginning of September.

The Train. At the time of going to print, the contract for the coming year, has not yet been issued. A decision is waiting from the technical people. The present

train will continue until such time as the new or present operator is decided.

No new news on the start date of the golf course.

Painting of the pavement has begun on the area from the post office down to the Commercial centre roundabout. The whole area of paving will be painted, rather than leaning it as black tarmac.

One of the emails to us, told of the grafiti in the tunnel of the new playground outside the Council Office. (picture below). It is such a shame after all of the

work to provide such a lovely ammenity.

Don’t forget, the other new play area is well under way. There will be a car park there, with lots of nice shady trees. It is the area on Noruega between the school and the GA Commercial centre roundabout. This gives play areas and petanc facilities, up the hill, and down the hill. Lets hope the kids, and mums and dads, enjoy these new facilities.

Dont forget the great spectacle of the World Windsurfing Championships, on Santa Pola beach from September 9th to the 19th.

A really prestigious event for the area.

With the arrival of September, the members of Gran Alacant's GASP Theatre Group are back in rehearsal for their November production, Alan Bennett's hilarious comedy “Habeas Corpus”.

The cast have been busy over the summer break learning their lines (“I sincerely hope!” remarked director Roger Keevil), while the often unsung heroes of the backstage team have taken the opportunity to track down some of the more unusual props required for the play, among them an old-fashioned British black telephone and a 1970s Polaroid camera.

What they're planning on photographing remains to be seen, although from the shots we took at rehearsal, there will be plenty of scandalous goings-on. The play is set in a doctor's surgery in Permissive-Society Brighton, and raises the curtain on the frantic scramble for sex and pleasure among the respectable middle classes. From what we've seen, it truly is a “saucy seaside postcard come to life”, and looks set to provide audiences with plenty of laughs.

Performances take place in Santa Pola's Casa de Cultura Theatre in Calle Elche (See Santa Pola map for location) on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November. Tickets will be on sale later this month at just 5 Euros each from Homefinders in Gran Alacant, OPI Rentals in Gran Alacant and La Marina, Davina's Ice Cream Van, and members of GASP. Donations from profits will be going to Paul Cunningham Nurses and a new children's library in Santa Pola.

Santa Pola Football Club

After an excellent six week, ten match pre-season campaign during which the entire first team pool had a run out and avoided serious injury, the serious stuff starts for Santa Pola C.F. The squad now await the visit of Albatera on Sunday September 6th as the 2009/10 campaign proper kicks into life.

Close season signings American brothers Carlos and Mario Fernandez have impressed mightily in the short time they’ve been with the club and both are full of confidence for the new season. Their optimism is shared by Technical Director Adriano Cano, who confirmed “we have a group of players who know they can do well and are looking forward to surprising a few teams” The Directors of Santa Pola FC recently confirmed season ticket prices will be held at

the same level as 2008/09, €100 socios and €50 for pensioners, under -25’s, ladies and the un-employed. To purchase yours contact the club on 966 694 139 or mobile 615 916 986.

Oh To Be 12 Again...

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, observing his wife, looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have for her Birthday.

'I'd like to be twelve again', she replied, still looking in the mirror.

On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Coco Pops, and then took her to Alton Towers theme park. What a day!

He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Corkscrew, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster, everything there was.

Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park.

Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down.

He then took her to a Mc Donald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake.

Then it was off to the cinema with popcorn, a huge Cola, and her favourite sweets...........M&M's.

What a fabulous adventure!

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted.

He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear, what was it like being twelve again?'

Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. 'I meant my dress size, you retard!!!!'

Having modest savings but a reasonable level of surplus pension income most months, they seek an immediate way to reduce the likely Inheritance Tax (IHT) bill for their children on death. They wish to control who will benefit from their estate on death and having spoken to their independent financial adviser they set up a regular savings premium of £300 per month each. To ensure the tax efficiency of the saving plan from an inheritance tax point of view, the saving amount is placed into a Discretionary Trust with the settler excluded.

To ensure an element of independence and privacy, the Hillmans select a professional trustee. Having relinquished control of the asset to the trustee(s), they provide a letter of wishes which guides the trustee(s) in who should benefit from the Hillman’s investment on death. Mr & Mrs Hillman complete “gift letters” to ensure their paperwork is in order.

Each year £7,200 plus any growth will build up in the trusts. The investment is immediately outside of their estates, potentially saving £2,880 each year in IHT. This information is based upon our interpretation of the tax position in respect of the hypothetical example above. The old rooster replies, 'Come on, surely you cannot handle ALL of these chickens. Look what it has done to me can't you just let me have the two old hens over in the corner?'

The young rooster says,'Beat it: You are washed up and I am taking over.'

The old rooster says, 'I tell you what, young stud.

I will race you around the farmhouse. Whoever wins gets the exclusive domain over the entire chicken coop.'

The young rooster laughs.

'You know you don't stand a chance, old man.

So, just to be fair, I will give you a head start.'

The old rooster takes off running. About 15

They round the front porch of the farmhouse and the young rooster has closed the gap. He is only about 5 feet behind the old rooster and gaining fast!

The farmer, meanwhile, is sitting in his usual spot on the front porch when he sees the roosters running by.

The Old Rooster is squawking and running as hard as he can.

The Farmer grabs his shotgun and - BOOM he blows the young rooster to bits. The farmer sadly shakes his head and says, 'Dammit..... third gay rooster I bought this month.'

Moral of this story? ....

The players of Gran Alacant FC have still been training hard through the hottest month of August, so there was welcome relief last tuesday when it rained during training!

The league is still a few weeks away and we are waiting for confirmation of the kick off date and the fixtures list.

Myself and Claire checked out the league table for the last season 2008/09 and there were some very good stats one being that the top team won an impressive 28 games out of 36.

We still have a long way to go but we are confident of having a good first season, it will be hard work but hopefully our "12th man" you the supporters will come along to cheer us on.

The league we are in is a 7-a-side , being for slightly older players, however we are able to make any amount of substitutions at anytime during the game which will help re-charge those tired legs!

We are still looking for resident players over the age of 30 years with a reasonable level of fitness who are able to train on tuesday night 8.30 - 10pm.

Obviously those players would not go straight into the team, as we have players that have been training for 2-3 months, but we would hope that after a few weeks training they would be pushing for a place in the team.

The training and games take place in Santa Pola at the astroturf stadium behind the local police station.

MABS Cancer Support Group PRESS INFORMATION MABS GRAN ALACANT TEAM JEAN REITERBUNT of MABS, The Cancer Support Group, and her team of Bill, Lyn, Sue, Sylvia, Rita and Chris are one of the most successful local teams raising funds for the charity. Over the last three years they have used their imagination and organisational skills to stage events, which have raised many thousands of Euros for MABS. Their musical shows are famous in Gran Alacant, particularly those staged in a Chinese restaurant! Now they need a rest and have decided to take a few months out. (Knowing Jean they'll probably treat it as a gap year and walk the Himalayas or something equally back breaking!!). All of the team will be back raising funds for MABS early in 2010 but until then the committee of MABS thanks them very, very much and wishes them an enjoyable break.

The Gran Alacant team taking a break does have its serious side however. In the past, and in various parts of the Costa’s, we have had individuals representing themselves as MABS fund raisers and using the money donated for anything but MABS. If anybody should approach you in the Gran Alacant area, between now and 2010, and say they are raising funds for MABS they are almost certainly fraudulent. MABS as a group always provide their fund raisers with letters of authority, in the original, never photocopies, and MABS never raises funds by rattling tins on the street.

Please be vigilant and remember that nobody in the Gran Alacant area has the authority to raise funds other than Jean's team.

For Adoption We are struggling again to keep up with the amount of animals that are being abandoned and will soon not be able to take any more dogs in unless we manage to re-home some .

Janet and John are beautiful tabby and white kittens. They are 23 weeks old, vaccinated and litter trained. Janet is a little shy at first but after a while loves to get a cuddle like her brother.

Reina is a beautiful German Shepherd and was found wandering around La Marina. She was found in a very poor state and was afraid to come near us. After putting tranquilisers in her food we managed to catch her and she is now in a foster home getting all the love she needs.

Fifi is a lovely friendly girl, which is quite amazing considering her owner tried to hang her, thankfully she shook herself loose and a volunteer found her. She is about 4 years old, spayed and vaccinated. Fifi now desperately needs a safe loving environment to call home.

Lisa is a 10 month old German Shepherd cross Husky. She is good with cats and other dogs.

She loves children and will play for hours with them.

Genuine emails to our magazine

Dear Sandra and Barry, I wrote to you before about the pine trees in Avd Escandinavis asking why they put these in when this being a main road needing to impress visitors, also it is a main walkway for people with both young children and dogs that are probably unaware of the dangers of the dreaded caterpillars. We were told that the trees would be sprayed, but we all know this is unlikely to happen being so near to the houses. Well now most of the trees are dying and look unsightly, please could you ask Loreto if we can have some of the pretty trees that they are planting up and down the hill. We don't need many as it is not a long stretch, even a few would be better than none and would greatly improve the area as many people use this road coming up to the medical centre, library etc.

Hi I know you must get hundreds of these emails but I just have to write again concerning the dogs `muck`. I noticed someone wrote to you saying that every dog in the GA must mess near Franks Bar. Can`t be................they all do it opposite the BBVA Bank! My biggest gripe with these people is, they nearly all have bags attatched to the lead, but mostly none of them use them. They stand there smiling away whilst their dogs mess away then walk away go back to wherever they live,& leave the residents to the disgusting smell. My point is if they think that this is acceptable, let your dog crap outside YOUR house & leave it there for you all to enjoy.

Dear Barry and Sandra, we holiday in Gran Alacant several times a year and our two children, Lucy aged four and Alex aged six have always liked to go to the park. They were thrilled when we came over recently for 2 weeks to discover that the park had been renovated and made much bigger.

The first time we visited the park it was graffiti free and looked brand new (picture attached).

The children spent almost two hours playing happily there. Just a day later we visited again and Lucy was shocked when she discovered graffiti on parts of the play equipment, particularly in the tunnel. My son was equally dismayed. What was even more upsetting was that on looking at the graffiti it was actually written in English.

We have in the past commented about the amount of graffiti that seems to occur in Spain.

We were extremely disappointed and felt embarrassed to be British on seeing this awful vandalism.

Hopefully you will be able to convey some of our disgust through your magazine.

Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club – Sponsored by Super Valu SABA Ladies Singles – Quarter Finals Congratulations to Pat Harman who battled her way through a quality quarter-final against Carol Rudge at Greenlands, to triumph by 21-11, and thus secure a place in the semifinals to be played at San Miguel between the 13th and 15th September.

SABA Pairs League League Two This week we played our final match of the season against Emerald Isle ‘B’ and whilst sharing the points two each, we had a shot advantage of 38-26.

This result enabled us to finish exactly in mid-table, sixth out of eleven teams.

Well done to Harry Dobson, John Corbet, Bill Young, Danny King, Dave Melville and Mike Farrelly, and special thanks to our singles champ Chris Merry, for being a ready and reliable sub when necessary, which was quite often with holiday commitments.

We are sure that next year they will achieve even better results.

SABA Spitfire League Monte Mar Toreadors – 10 points - 94 shots Country Bowls – 4 points – 81 shots This week the Toreadors hosted Country Bowls, who unfortunately could only field five trips teams, thus only five games.

Of the five played, we won three and Country Bowls two, with one game being forfeit to Monte Mar. Special mention to Peter Matthews trip, who won yet again and are on a real roll (Please not the Scribe’s kiss of death again).

Denise Ashberry, Mike Farrelly and Peter Matthews, Val Hyman, Ted Hyman and Bill Young, Brian Harman, Pat Harman, and Colin Armitage Blisters… Everyone else President’s Birthday Competition for the Bernard Pearce Trophy Our annual President’s Birthday competition took place on Friday afternoon/evening the 14th August, for the Bernard Pearce Trophy.

Forty-eight players in rinks teams took part, and an excellent time was had by all.

Our President, Don Antonio Martinez, played in the same team as local councillor Loreto Cascales, who by all accounts played very well, and could well become a regular member at the club, we hope.

At the end of the day, the competition was decided on shot difference, with the winners having a shot difference of 22 shots, an advantage of five over the second place team.

The winning team comprised of Marianne Foreman, the Scribe (yes it’s not a misprint), John Corbet and skip Geoff Slaughter, so congratulations to us!!

The day was rounded off by an excellent meal in the Rincon restaurant, and the club presented Don Antonio with a box of his favourite giant cigars.

The highlight of the day, however, was when popular Club Men's Singles Champion Chris Merry cheered up all of the novices playing and watching, by bowling not one but two wrong bias bowls on successive ends, his first for years.

The whole green was brought to a standstill as oxygen was administered to Chris, not because of his ‘wrong uns’, but because someone calculated the drinks bill he would have to pay!!!

By the way, he remains good enough to bowl those ‘wrong uns’, and still win his match, so there!

Unfortunately, there was a problem with the photographs of the presentation, Scribe being in them not behind the camera, so the photograph included shows Club Interpreter Tony Pardo, having presented owner Don Antonio Martinez with his birthday present, now interpreting Don Antonio’s reply, watched by Chairman Mike Farrelly.

Other Club News Sponsors Days On three successive Sunday mornings recently, we invited our many club sponsors to spend time with us at our club.

The response was excellent, with well over thirty of our sponsors and their families attending, and in the first instance they received expert tuition from club coach Bill Young, in etiquette, sportsmanship and practical bowling.

They were then let loose on the green under the guidance of Bill, Chairman Mike Farrelly, Competition Secretary Dave Melville and Club Interpreter Tony Pardo.

Following each morning’s tuition, all of our guests were treated to a tapas feast, washed down with copious amounts of each person’s poison.

The feedback from all of our sponsors has been totally positive, and putting his other hat on as

He’s Done It Despite the numerous moans and groans, whilst sweating and toiling, club Vice-Captain Terry Errington has completed his epic bicycle ride from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise money for charity, together with his friend Lionel.

For once, the British weather was kind, with the wind mainly behind or to the left or right, and only on a few occasions in their faces. The rain was also kind, only soaking them twice, with a few more days of light rain, and a bit of sleet near Aviemore in Scotland.

The bicycles performed well, the only problem they had were repeat punctures in Lionel’s bike, caused by a split in the tyre wall, a nearby Halfords came to the rescue.

They generally rode at about 7/8 miles per hour, so that they could experience the scenery seeing a lot more of the country at that speed than when driving.

Their route through Scotland’s lochs and glens was spectacular, and the towns and cities of Stirling, Dornoch, Inverness, Pitlochry and Edinburgh, all had their own bit of history.

Through the borders into England with 420 miles done and nearly half way, they struggled with some nasty hills especially over Shap Fell, through Kendal and onto Carnforth, where they visited the railway station where Brief Encounters was filmed.

They travelled on towards Warrington and Shrewbury and into the Midlands, where they

benefitted from flatter terrain, and then onto Ludlow and the beautifully picturesque Wye Valley.

They crossed the Avon/Seven Bridge into the West Country with only 200 miles to go, through Bristol onto Taunton and then into Devon and Cornwall.

The West Country hills are shorter but a lot steeper, unlike Scotland where they go through the valleys, and this part of the ride became very hard for our intrepid friend.

One great bonus to this section of the ride was some very lovely countryside through the rolling hills and valleys over Dartmoor and passing through the towns of Taunton, Exeter, and numerous and various small villages, before pushing on to Redruth with only one more day to go.

During the last day from Redruth, they passed through some lovely country lanes into Penzance, but stated that the last eleven miles from Penzance and down the last hill into Lands End, was quite emotional, but that looking back at the 964.32 miles they had covered they had a great sense of achievement for having done it, and quite right too!!

Money is still coming in, and this will all go into the bank in England, and be paid to the hospital when Terry returns to the UK for Christmas.

KENNEL COUGH In this month article we are going to write about this infectious disease, because there has been an outbreak at the beginning of the summer in Gran Alacant area, and we believe prevention and ways of transmission of the disease are not very well known by people.

Kennel cough is a multifactorial infectious tracheobronchitis, which means it’s not caused by an only factor, but some of them working together. One of the most important causal factors would be a high number of dogs living together (this is why it’s called “kennel cough”). In this case, transmission is usually easy and quick.

Some people believe this is the only way of transmission: lots of dogs living together, for example, in a kennel, dog pound, etc, but this is false: direct (and sometimes non direct) contact with an infected dog (playing, sniffing each other, go for a walk together), is enough. Remember this is a dog disease, so, nothing to worry about people.

Instead of an only infectious agent, the disease is caused by a

combination of bacteria (Bordetella bronchiseptica), and some viruses (Adenovirus, Parainfluenza). When working together, they produce an inflammation of trachea and upper respiratory tract. Some other circumstances (weak immunity, sudden temperature changes, contaminated air (by tobacco, exhausts, cleansing products, etc)) are required for developing the disease. This is why, in some cases, not all the dogs which are living together catch the disease.

The disease looks very similar to human flu, because it’s basically a respiratory problem, more common in cold months (anyway, beware of summer! Most dogs are looking desperately for air con direct air flow!), and the transmission is extremely quick. Same as human flu, the disease lasts for about 7-10 days, and it’s normally a trivial process except in case of complications caused by old age or previous cardiac or respiratory problems.

Sometimes, apart from respiratory symptoms, some digestive ones may be reported (vomits and diarrhoea), but the main sign is always the cough (when a dog

coughs, in 99.9% of cases there is NOTHING stuck in his throat!), very strong, and sometimes accompanied by expectoration, which may be confused with vomiting. In some cases, when the cough is very strong, the dog may get “dizzy” or even spit some blood. Of course, the dog (and anybody else at home!) is not able to sleep properly at night, looses the appetite, and starts having fever (not in every case). This is the moment when visiting the Vet becomes absolutely necessary, for controlling the vicious circle of the coughing (the more they cough, the more irritated the trachea gets, and vice versa), and for stopping the infection coming to bronchia and lungs, which may be fatal for old or previously ill dogs. In case of summertime infections in brachiocephalic dogs (Boxer, Bulldog, Pug, etc), respiratory function must be specially controlled.

The treatment consists on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines, and in most cases an improvement can be seen in 1-2 days, but of course, the best option is, once again, prevention.

Normal annual booster inoculation only includes one part of the causal agents of the disease: the viruses, but not B. bronchiseptica. For covering the whole microorganism combination, we must add

a complementary vaccine against B. bronchiseptica, but because this injection is quite expensive and must be done twice a year instead of once, we only recommend this special vaccine in the following cases: -Old dogs with chronical cardio-respiratory problems.

-Dogs which cannot accept antiinflamatory.

-Dogs with congenital problems, such as tracheal stenosis (“sabre-sheath trachea”).

-Dogs which are going on kennels (as a matter of fact, serious kennels oblige their guests to have this injection done).

Our last recommendation would be: if your dog is been diagnosed, you’d better keep him apart from other dogs for a few days, otherwise you’ll be spreading the infection everywhere.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge Let’s take a walk down memory lane. Did you or your kids ever have a cabbage patch doll, a pet rock, a Rubik cube, or worst of all, a mullet haircut? Did you once wear tie-dyed shirts, did you download that crazy frog ringtone for your mobile?

The problem with fads and crazes is what to do when the euphoria dies down. You can cut off your mullet, your pet rock can be thrown into the garden, your tie-dyed shirt can be reduced to small pieces and used as a cleaning cloth, and no-one is affected long term (although the crazy frog ringtone still gives me the night terrors).

But there was one craze which had an adverse effect on Spanish wildlife. Do the names Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michaelangelo ring a bell, other than of course being famous painters? You’ve got it, they were the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who were created in 1984, and soon after they appeared the demand for pet turtles went through the roof.

There was a species from America which filled the need, called the Red-eared Slider (or Red-eared Terrapin). The figures were quite startling, more than 50 million Sliders were exported from the USA between 1989 and 1997 alone, it is estimated that at least 4 million of these ended up in Spain. They were easy to breed, looked cute when they were babies, and didn’t need too much looking after – but fed-up parents soon realised that their children quickly lost interest in a relatively immobile version of their comic-book heroes, and the quickest way to get rid of them (the

turtles, not the kids) was to flush them down the drain or put them in the local pond to fend for themselves. Freed from their glass aquariums, the terrapins flourished.

The Red-eared Slider is now a common sight in the pools in the Clot, and elsewhere in Spain. You can see them if you watch the surface of the water carefully; what seems at first glance to be a floating piece of debris may in fact be the snout of one of these terrapins, and if you are lucky in warmer weather you may see one sunning itself on the banks of the pools. I saw a Spanish family at the new hide throwing pieces of bread to one, and my resulting picture shows the terrapin chowing down – well, it is American after all.

They are tough animals and long-lived, and they compete with the resident European and Stripe-necked Terrapins which have been shown to lose weight and have a higher mortality when competing against the Sliders.

Their Spanish name is Galapago de Florida, and that’s really where they ought to be!
