Hello
You will see in our news section the end of an era for us, with Loreto no longer in the future meeting with us every month. We will miss all of the help she has given us over the years she has sat at the table with us. We do have a new person who will relay all of the news to us, in future monthly meetings. Phew, June seemed to get hotter and hotter.
When riding around the area, there seems to be more and more new homes being built, maybe Spain is indeed on the up. Have a good month

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005. If you have any questions or problems you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine. Firstly the end of an era. Months ago, Loreto Cascales told us that she would not carry on as Councillor of Gran Alacant, after the elections. The elections are now over and Loreto has left her post. She has been brilliant to us, giving her time to us at our monthly meetings, and now become a firm friend. In time, I think voters will realise just how much she is missed. To date, with the new Town Hall set up, we will have no resident Councillor for Gran Alacant at the Town Hall. We, at the magazine, have a new contact at the Town Hall. So, any questions or any problems that you would like answered, email us, and we will put them to the new representative. You can read can this magazine at....www.granalacantadvertiser.com...... Dear neighbours,
Vecinos
The last 24th May there were municipal elections and the results were the following ones: Partido Popular Psoe Ciudadanos Compromis EU Sí Se puede
El pasado 24 de mayo se celebraron las elecciones municipales y los resultados fueron los siguientes: 9 councillors 4 3 3 1 1
My party, the Popular Party won the elections but we did not have enough councillors to govern by our own. The other five parties have come together and they are governing our city at this moment. Unfortunately, the new governing group of five different parties has decided not to have a councillor of Gran Alacant which is an error and a backward step for the area from my point of view.
I must say, it has been a pleasure to work for Gran Alacant along the last years and although I know there is still much to do, it is also true that we did a lot of work as well. As you already know, Gran Alacant was very different twelve years ago and we have contributed to most of its improvements.
Finally, I would like to let you know that I am going to be at your disposal as usually trying to help you in my new political working place in the opposition side. Regards, Loreto Cascales

A plane is on its way to Toronto , when a blonde in economy class gets up, and moves to the first class section and sits down. the flight attendant watches her do this, and asks to see her ticket. she then tells the blonde that she paid for economy class, and that she will have to sit in the back. the blonde replies, "I'm blonde, i'm beautiful, i'm going to Toronto and I'm staying right here." The flight attendant goes into the cockpit and tells the pilot and the co-pilot that there is a blonde bimbo sitting in first class, that belongs in economy, and won't move back to her seat. The co-pilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that because she only paid for economy, she will have to leave and return to her seat. the blonde replies, "i'm blonde, i'm beautiful, i'm going to Toronto and i'm staying right here." the co-pilot tells the pilot that he probably should have the police waiting when they land to arrest this blonde woman who won't listen to reason. The pilot says, "you say she is a blonde? i'll handle this; i'm married to a blonde.. I speak blonde.." He goes back to the blonde and whispers in her ear, and she says, "oh, i'm sorry." and gets up and goes back to her seat in economy.. the flight attendant and co-pilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss. "i told her, "first class isn't going to toronto ".

PADS PROBLEMS
Dogs and cats feet pads are their “shoes”. Both dogs and cats walk on their toes, so a protection against impacts is required for them. The internal part of the pads is made of elastic and fatty tissue, and the external one consists of a thick coat of keratin. The colour of this external part is normally dark, but it may vary between individuals, and even an animal may have differences between their pads. The keratin coat protects from friction, and the fatty coat, apart from being like an “air cushion”, it also protects from extreme temperatures. This is why animals are able to walk on hot surfaces (such as asphalt in summer) without suffering any injury. At the pads there are also some glands which are important for scent marking in cats (when they scratch for “sharpening the claws”), and for keeping the pads themselves in optimal condition. A normal, healthy pad normally doesn’t need any special attention from the owner, despite there are available at the market some ointments and lotions which are supposed to keep a certain degree of hydration at the pads and to make the keratin coat stronger. Normally they are not necessary, not even in those animals which are being trained at asphalt. In case those medicines become necessary, they should be used only at home before going to bed, in order to avoid dirt and sand from the street to get stuck to the feet. The most common health problems involving the pads are: -Wounds (with or without a foreign body). They are very common in those dogs which go for a walk at the country very often, because, unfortunately, the country if full of broken glasses which are left there by people with very poor sense of citizenship. Despite it may be very shocking due to the massive haemorrhage it produces, normally it is not a very worrying condition by itself. The only problem is pads are probably the part of the dog (and cat) which takes the longest time to heel, and, besides, stitching is completely useless at this area because of the fatty tissue, so, normally, it takes several weeks to a wounded pad to be back to normal. Patience is what we usually recommend to the owners. -Dry mug, little stones or fur balls between the toes. This is an extremely common condition which can be quite painful (and produce spectacular limping), because the plants (the part of the feet between toes), is very sensitive (just like a stone in your shoe). The treatment is very simple: removing the foreign body with an electric clipper. Let’s don’t forget the keratin coat is skin, and just like the rest of the skin, has to be renewed. Sometimes the owner reports that it looks like the skin at the pads is “falling down”. If a brand new keratin coat appears under the old one, this is not an illness but a normal process. There are some other alterations at the pads which may indicate a disease, such as: -Swollen pads in cats: it may indicate a problem with the immunity, and even cat leukaemia. -Skin ulcers between pads and toes in cats may indicate eosinophillic granuloma complex, which is another alteration of the immunity. -Keratin overgrowth at the pads may indicate hypothyroidism or canine distemper. -Wounds that never heel is a typical condition in leishmaniasis. -Wounds, ulcers or scabs may indicate some other immunity problems such as PENFIGO. Checking our pet’s pads is a simple task. If we detect something abnormal, even if it’s not painful (the animal doesn’t limp or lick the area), is time to see the Vet, since these alterations may be sometimes the evidence of a severe process.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
Those of you who watch the Springwatch series on BBC last month will know that although Spring is the most exciting time for wildlife watchers, it is not without its little tragedies. Unfortunately down at the Clot we have had our own little wildlife disaster, when a pair of Black-winged Stilts decided to build a nest right next to the hide at the main pool in a very open area of water. I remember thinking at the time that this was an unwise decision, but over the days that followed it became a well-known attraction to both dedicated and casual visitors to the Clot. The birds were seen mating on the 18th May, and by the 25th a nest had been built and four eggs laid. Both birds took turns to incubate the eggs, and over the days which followed the nest became a more substantial construction. They were very protective of the nest, seeing off any other birds and wildlife which approached too closely, even at one point seeing off the very large Purple Swamphen (the turkey-sized blue bird which many of you will have seen). The normal incubation period for Black-winged Stilts is about three weeks, but on the 13th June it was clear that the birds had abandoned their nest, leaving just two eggs exposed to the elements. A few days later, even those had gone, with the Stilt pair feeding disconsolately away from the nest area. It is unlikely that they will attempt to raise another brood at this stage of the year. So what happened? There are several possibilities, the most likely of which is that the birds realised there was no activity going on in the eggs, and therefore would not hatch. Or perhaps a predator had taken two of the eggs, and the parents knew it would return for the other two. However, the good news is that there are other Stilts in the Clot, down in the thick reedbed area in the centre of the reserve. Watch out for their gangly youngsters in a few weeks time, as soon as then can fly short distances they will be visiting the main pool to feed.
You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
