Answering all your questions about local issues as well as exploring life and culture in Spain as a San Fulgencio local. This month I have been asked about the rules concerning pet ownership and especially dogs. We do have some strict laws regarding pet registration, microchipping, and ownership of potentially dangerous breeds. In recent years, Spain has also strengthened its animal welfare laws, making pet abandonment and mistreatment serious offenses.
Pet Registration & Microchipping
In Spain, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be registered and microchipped under Law 7/2023 on Animal Welfare. Yes, ferrets, because they can transmit diseases such as rabies. The microchip contains a unique identification number linked to the owner’s details in a national database.
Required Documents for Registration
To complete the registration process, you´ll need the following: 1. Owner´s Identification: A valid DNI, NIE, or passport. 2. Pet´s Microchip Number: Microchipping is mandatory for dogs, cats, and ferrets. 3. Vaccination Records: Proof of up-todate vaccinations, including the rabies vaccine, which is compulsory in Spain. 4. Completed Registration Form 5. The registration fee is €15
Dangerous Dog Breeds (PPP - Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos)
Spain has strict rules for owners of potentially dangerous dogs (PPP). These
dogs require special licenses, liability insurance, and additional regulations. Official PPP List : • Pit Bull Terrier • Rottweiler • Staffordshire Bull Terrier • American Staffordshire Terrier • Dogo Argentino • Fila Brasileiro • Tosa Inu • Akita Inu NOTE : In Spain, dogs that exhibit certain characteristics are classified as Potentially Dangerous Dogs (PPP), even if they are not on the official list. According to the RIVIA Veterinary Association, a dog may be considered a PPP if it meets the following criteria: • Weight: Over 20 kg. • Shoulder Height: Greater than 40 cm. • Jaw Strength: Strong bite force. PPP Laws in San Fulgencio: • Owners must be over 18 years old and obtain a PPP license from the Town Hall. • Mandatory liability insurance (minimum coverage of €120,000). • Dogs must always be on a short leash (max 2 metres) and wear a muzzle in public. • Owners must prove no criminal record and pass a psychological fitness test.
• Non-compliance can result in fines up to €15,000 or pet confiscation.
• Banning pet abandonment – fines of up to €50,000.
Leash and Muzzle Requirements
• Prohibition of leaving dogs alone for over 24 hours.
• All dogs must be kept on a leash at all times in public areas. Allowing a dog to roam freely can result in fines, unless in designated dog parks or offleash zones. • Dogs classified as PPP are required to wear a muzzle in public and be on a strong, non-extendable leash no longer than 2 metres.
Waste Disposal
Obligation: Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up their pet’s waste in public spaces. Failing to do so can result in fines.
Noise Control
Pets, especially dogs, must not cause excessive noise or disturbance. Continuous barking that disturbs neighbours can lead to complaints and fines.
Limits on Number of Pets
Regulation: Spain´s national Animal Welfare Law limits households to a maximum of five pets. If you already have more than five pets or plan to exceed this number, you must apply for special authorization from the local authorities.
Animal Welfare Laws in Spain
Spain’s new animal welfare law (Ley 7/2023) introduced stricter protections:
• Breeding restrictions – Only registered breeders can sell puppies. • Mandatory pet insurance for all dog owners. • No permanent chaining or keeping dogs on balconies for long periods.
Reporting Lost or Stolen Animals in Spain
If your pet goes missing or is stolen in Spain, it´s crucial to act promptly: 1. Report the incident to the local police station (Policía Local) or the Guardia Civil. 2. Inform the Ayuntamiento (town hall) where your pet is registered. In San Fulgencio, you can reach them at registro@ayto-sanfulgencio.es 3. Alert Veterinary Clinics and Shelters: Provide them with a description and photo of your pet. 4. Use Online Platforms: Post on websites and social media groups dedicated to lost pets in Spain. 5. Check Local Animal Shelters: Regularly visit or contact shelters in your area.

My La Marina With Lee Robinson of LR Carpentry
When did you come to La Marina?
We moved here in September 2024... by we I mean me, the wife and our two, delightful seven year old twin girls! What were you doing and where were you living before you came to La Marina?
We were living in Northampton. I was doing then, as I am now, carpentry and joining. It´s what I´ve always done... I left school in, oh, 1989, and started work as an apprentice at a local firm of joiners, which was something I found really enjoyable to do. Eventually I studied and worked for (and got!) a City and Guilds qualification in carpentry and joinery. Why did you move to Spain?
What is your favourite thing about La Marina?
Oh... many reasons... we´ve actually been coming to La Marina since 1989 as my parents had a holiday home out here and we always, always enjoyed our trips over so moving here wasn´t a difficult decision, especially bearing in mind the situation in the UK where life has just become difficult and horribly expensive. And... of course... aside from the much, much better weather, we also feel that the institution of family is just more, I dunno... respected out here in Spain.
I love being able to relax here... so much easier to do than in the UK... to chill out, to meet with friends, to walk quietly – I just find life here much less stressful. Also, I think people here are more friendly, more open... I dunno... maybe it´s that whole expat thing... ex-pats are people who´ve been adventurous enough to start a new life in a new country so maybe they´re just more open to new things and new people? Oh, and did I mention the weather!?
And what do you do do now?
Oh, more of the same please! I want to carry on with the more laid back life here. I want to see the wife and kids happy, to spend more time with them than I could in the UK, and to watch my two beautiful girlls grow up here, I want to see them happy at school, making new friends, growing up, learning to speak Spanish settling into Spanish society and building a future here. A happy, healthy future for us all... that´s what I want!
Well, the same as for over thirty years... carpentry! I have my own business out here, LR Carpentry and I do everything carpentry related. I can fit pre-bought kitchen and other room units or I can custom design, to fit any space that a customer needs worked on, cupboards, shelving, draws, whole units of all three, from absolute scratch and then build and install them. The custom design and building option is great option for customers who have a particular space that they want to fill out as shop bought units are limited in their flexibility. As well as that I can fit laminate and vinyl floorings and doing any carpentry related job that people might need doing.

At the recent Champion of Champions event held at Greenlands B.C., our ladies pairs team of Janet Parsons & Shirley Hadaway were narrowly beaten in the final in a game which went to the final bowl on the final end. A great performance (pictured with event organiser John O Brien.) In the mens pairs competition, Garth Slater & Barry Roberts lost at the semifinal stage. This week we have had two good wins in our Summer League campaign. On Monday we played Quesada at La Marina, and won 10 points to 2, and followed it up on Wednesday with a fine 7- 5 win in the V.C.L. away to Greenlands. The next bowling club social function is on May 25th., with the ever popular "WOODY". Tickets available from Social Secretary. Report and photos in next month's issue. If you would like to try your hand at Bowls, come along to the Club at the Sports Complex any Tuesday or Thursday at 10.15am and give it a go. OUR ROOTS: THE BATTLE FOR THE MED By the end of the Iron Age, Spain was a patchwork of indigenous cultures - such as the Iberians - while colonies established by foreign traders - Phoenicians and Greeks - thrived along the coast. Among these, Carthage, a rising power, was about to leave a profound mark. Carthage, founded by Phoenician settlers on the North African coast, had by the 4th century BC become a dominant maritime power in the western Mediterranean. Its wealth stemmed from trade supported by a powerful navy. Initially, Carthage maintained commercial relations with Rome (another rising power), but growing rivalry over Sicily led to what is known as the First Punic War. Carthage lost the war and its hold over Sicily, but its ambitions endured. General Hamilcar Barcid, determined to recover Carthaginian strength, turned to the Iberian Peninsula. In 237 BC, Hamilcar landed near Gadir (modern Cádiz), bringing with him his young son Hannibal. Over the next several years, he launched campaigns inland, forging alliances with local tribes, who he annexed to his army, and exploiting the region’s mineral wealth, especially silver. Hamilcar founded Akra Leuke - "The White Summit" - around 230 BC, near present-day Alicante. While the exact location remains debated, archaeological discoveries at Tossal de Manises in Alicante, such as Punic coins and pottery, support the theory that the Carthaginians established this important city before the arrival of the Romans. And so, our much-beloved city could have been founded by none other than Hannibal’s father - Hannibal, who would go on to become one of the most renowned and formidable military figures in history. Further inland, a significant Iberian city, Helike - now associated with modern-day Elche - played a critical role. Located at La Alcúdia site, it was a center of trade, agriculture, and governance. When Carthage attempted to capture Helike, they encountered fierce resistance from the Oretani, the Iberian tribe native to the area. In the legendary Battle of Helike, the Oretani reportedly used flaming bulls to scatter Hamilcar’s elephants, throwing the Carthaginian forces into disarray. Hamilcar was killed near the Segura River, but his
sons escaped to Akra Leuke. After his death, Hamilcar was succeeded by his son-in-law who went on to found QartHadasht, or "New Carthage," in what is now Cartagena. The city, fortified and outfitted with temples, arsenals, and royal buildings, soon became the capital of Carthaginian Iberia. He later returned to Helike and razed the city. After his assassination, Hannibal assumed command. In 219 BC, he besieged Saguntum (modern Sagunto), a Roman ally south of the agreed CarthaginianRoman boundary. This act violated their treaty and triggered the Second Punic War. Hannibal’s legendary march across the Alps with war elephants followed, stunning Rome. Yet despite early victories, his campaign ultimately failed. In 202 BC, he was defeated at the Battle of Zama by Scipio Africanus, ending Carthage’s role as a major power. Scipio then led the conquest of Iberian Carthage. He captured many cities which were gradually Romanized: Qart-Hadasht was renamed Cartago Nova (one day Cartagena), Helike became Ilici (later Elche), and Akra Leuke became Lucentum, later overshadowed by the Muslim-founded Al-Laqant - modern Alicante. Today, our home is layered with this deep past. In Elche’s Alcúdia site, where once stood Iberian Helike, the famous Dama de Elche was discovered. In Cartagena, Roman ruins like the amphitheatre coexist with Punic ruins, and even Civil War bunkers, telling the story of a city continuously shaped by conflict over thousands of years. The legacy of Carthage in Spain still echoes through its ancient streets, celebrated today in festivals, museums, and the very names of our cities.

TULISA´S TALES Tips and Tricks for walking your hooman on a lead
(remember, claw, not the sharpest and all that) by just stopping dead and refusing to move until you´ve done what you want to do.
Bark! Hullo doggy and hooman readers! Bark! In this month´s piece I´ve decided to address the important issue of how us doggies should walk our hoomans... those hoomans out there who can read will also found this information useful so if you´re one of those cleverer than normal hoomans, carry on reading! So... there are some places (the countryside, special Hooman parks) where you can let your hoomans walk on their own but in most places, where there is more going on, it´s very important that you walk your hooman on a lead. We all know that hoomans aren´t the sharpest claw on a cat´s paw and in busy places they can get into all sorts of trouble so they need to be properly supervised. Here´s some great tips to on how to keep your human on the lead and under control! Pull a lot! Always, always pull when you´ve got your hooman on the lead. Hoomans are, as you know, slow and a bit lazy and if you don´t pull hard as you can on that lead the whole walk thing will take longer than a cat trying to solve a maths problem, that being forever! Your needs come first! If, while walking your hooman, you, I dunno, need a wee or meet a doggy mate and want to do a bit of friendly growling and butt-sniffing then make it quite clear to your hooman
Poohing. If you do a pooh, make sure your hooman picks it up...I don´t need to tell you, dear doggy readers, that hoomans have a tendency to be lazier than sleeping cats! Stop your hooman from tawking. You may sometimes find that when you´re walking your hoomans they meet another hooman they know. This can be a problem as your hooman will stop and start doing this thing with the other hooman called ´tawking´ – they´ll stand looking at each other, mouths moving and making weird noises – I mean, for cat´s sake, what´s that all about!? Anyway, you need to stop theis ´tawking´ or it´ll go on and on. How though? Easy. You need a dramatic, barking bark gesture...move yourself between the tawking hoomans, squat and do a big, stinky pooh. Bark! That´ll shut them up! Time to go home. So, you think you´ve walked your hooman enough and want to go home to check on important stuff like have any cats sneaked into your garden while you´ve been away. But your hooman is oblivious...he or she is away with the catfairies and just wants to wander aimlessly. Nope. Not having that! Easily solved. Just sit right down, refuse to move and stare up at your hooman with big, puppy dog eyes and flick your head in the direction of home – the hooman will soon get the message and you´ll be on your way home where you can check what you need to check and start getting your hooman ready to make your dinner!

Please sign the online petition: Veterinarians and animal welfare organisations throughout Spain have been expressing their anger and discontent due to the new regulations for administering medicines for animals after the royal decree which came into force at the beginning of the year, resulting in animals being left untreated and without vitally needed medicines. One of the changes brought about by the new decree is that veterinarians are no longer be able to call upon their personal knowledge and experience to use or prescribe high grade antibiotics, they can initially prescribe only mild antibiotic medication.

There are other new regulations on medication administration including mandatory microchipping and stricter prescription controls, affecting not only veterinarians, also pet owners, facing higher costs and prolonged vet clinic visits, and animal rescue & welfare workers. Stray dogs and street cats without a microchip are no longer able to receive essentially needed medication due to the required extensive testing and bureaucratic hurdles. Animal welfare and rescue organisations are finding it significantly more difficult due to restricted access to medications for animals in their care.
To prescribe a more appropriate and powerful antibiotic a vet must now carry out a culture to confirm the need, which in many cases will cause up to 10 days delay in providing the proper medication while
Vets, their associates and supporters have organised and attended large scale demonstrations in all the major cities to demand an amendment to the regulation to ensure that pets in Spain and animals in shelters can receive treatment with already established and more practical solutions.

SER VS ESTAR
Ser and Estar (both meaning “to be”) are two of the trickiest verbs for Spanish learners, and for good reason. They’re everywhere, in almost every sentence, and the rules can feel overwhelming....but we can’t speak Spanish without the verb to be, can we? From “I am Dani” to “Where is the dog?,” it’s essential...so which form, ser or estar, do we use and when? Let’s break it down in a way that actually makes sense: • SER: Soy- I am; Eres- you are/ are you; Es- He/she/it is; Somos- we are; Soisyou plural are / you guys are; Son- they are. The list of rules for using ser include identity, profession, nationality, religion, political ideologies, characteristics, personality, relationships, and many more. To summarise: For people: WHO SOMEONE IS (or part of) and WHAT THEY ARE LIKE (inside and out). Soy Dani (I am Dani, that’s who I am); Soy profesora (I am a teacher- that’s who I am, at least to my students); Soy bajita (I’m short- that’s what I’m like); Soy extrovertida (I’m an extrovert – I just am!); Mi madre es guapa (my mum is pretty, that’s what she is); Mi padre es inglés (my dad is English, he is). For things: WHAT SOMETHING IS (or part of) and WHAT IT IS LIKE La mesa es blanca y redonda (that’s what it’s like); Las tortugas son lentas (tortoises are slow, they are!), Es un plato típico de España (it’s a typical Spanish dish, that’s what it is). • ESTAR: Estoy- I am; Estás- you are/ are you; Está- He/she/it is; Estamos- we are; Estáis- you plural are / you guys are; Están- they are. For people: FEELINGS, LOCATION and STATES. What do I mean by “states” when it comes to people? Drunk, pregnant, dead, alive, retired (STATE of retirement), married / single / divorced (civil STATUS), asleep…Está borracho (he’s drunk, state), Estoy en casa (I’m at home, location), ¿Estás casado? (are you married?, state), Estoy despierta (I’m awake, state), Están dormidos (they are asleep, state), Está vivo (he’s alive, state).

For things: Same rules, minus the feelings, so… LOCATION and STATES for things include: open, dead, full, empty, broken, busy, available, dirty… La puerta está cerrada (the door is closed, state), La silla está rota (the chair is broken, state), El restaurante está abierto (the restaurant is open, state), Madrid está en España (Madrid is in Spain - location). So, instead of trying to memorise every single rule ever made for ser and estar, look at it like this: • Ser = identity, essence, or permanent characteristics - who/what someone or something is. • Estar = current condition or situation how someone or something is right now or where they are. That’s why we say es guapo (he’s handsome - that’s what he’s like) but está guapo hoy (he looks handsome today - right now, in this moment). Same person, two different vibes. Don’t stress about perfection. You’ll mix them up sometimes - that’s normal. The important thing is to use them, mess up, and keep going. That’s how real learning happens. With time, your gut will start to know what “sounds right,” and you’ll feel more confident using them naturally. HUGE EXCITEMENT AS SISTER ACT COMES TO THE COSTA BLANCA!
It is with great pleasure and tremendous pride that Studio32 bring Sister Act The Musical to The Costa Blanca. It has taken nearly a year to bring this mammoth production to the stage, from negotiating the rights to months of rehearsals, set building and costume designing- hundreds of hours put in behind the scenes! Sister Act was first performed at The London Palladium starring Patina Miller, Sheila Hancock and Ian Lavender and then moved across the pond to Broadway in 2011 where it ran for 561 performances. At The Cardinal Belluga Theatre here in San Fulgencio, Sister Act will run for five shows only. For those of you who are fortunate enough to already have a ticket for the show, you are in for a stunning performance that will be remembered and spoken about long after the curtains close! Traditionally Studio32 have always produced two shows each year. This winter, there is a break from tradition as the crew and cast take a very well earned rest from performing and creating to allow adaquate time and energy to produce another mammoth performance in May 2026. The rights for the next show have already been agreed and the licence purchased...and that show will be 9to5, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton! It goes without needing to be said that everyone who is involved with producing the shows is dedicated and a valued member of the team. Social events are frequently held to bond, build on friendships and generally enjoy!
