Hope Christian Fellowship church is very much part of the La Marina community. It has been at its present location for 12 years...in fact, donations from members allowed the church to purchase the building it´s based in back in 2021
It´s is an independent Evangelical church, a registered charity, and its members (reflecting the diversity of La Marina´s population) are of many different denominations and nationalities. It also has strong links with the community:
• It works closely with the AAN Charity, providing its members and others, with a food drop off point, which is collected each week. The church also sponsors AAN financially bi- monthly.
• It has a large stock of mobility aids... walking frames, wheel chairs, walking sticks, and some baby equipment...free to the community (though donations for use are always welcome!).
• Every Thursday, they have Cornerstone between 10AM -1PM which assist´s completely free of charge with TIE’s, carers and attendance allowance, disability payments etc.
• The Church is planning further community links in the future, so watch this space!
• Additionally, the Church sponsors the UK based charity The Message Trust which provides assistance to needy people, via the Community Grocery Store which helps poorer people get a full food shop for as little as 5 pounds.
The Church has three main days, when it meets:
• Sunday 11am – Church Service which includes prayers, singing and a relevant message, to live our lives effectively... then a lovely brew and cake afterwards. There is always a warm welcome! (Our services are also streamed live on Facebook)
• Wednesday 11.30am – Is Meet and Eat...a mixture of prayer, bible study and personal testimonies of how

people found faith in Jesus, followed by lunch in a local restaurant.
• Thursday 10am-1pm – Cornerstone. (Please see above)
There´s also a special event for women, once a month on a Friday morning, called WOW! WOW was the vision of Shirl Perks who sadly passed away before she saw the vision become a reality.
The event has a different focus every month. WOW has a great mixture of both members of the Church, and residents of La Marina, and beyond.
Everyone is welcome to attend any of the church’s events; a very warm welcome will always await you.
This article was written with the help of Mary the church’s Senior Pastor and Ivan, a member of the leadership, team. (see them both in the pic on this page!). They would like to say to anyone interested in joining the Church or just finding out more...come to one of the Sunday services or contact Mary on telephone number 631 452 546 or email: hopechurchleader@gmail.com (Mary took over the role of Senior Pastor in February from Pastor Bryan Lowry who had been in that role for 12 years, retiring at the grand age of 93 years young!)
Hope Christian fellowship can be found at Calle Justo Antonio Quesada 19A, 03177 San Fulgencio.

with Barry Wallis from the Seniors Friendship Association
Barry, what were you doing before you came to La Marina
Oh..well...I was lucky. I was working as commercial manager for Welling United Football Club...that was great fun as it combined two of my great enthusiasms – business and football! I´m a total footy lover...had trials for Swindon as a kid and loved it ever since. I don´t know if it´s relevant here but I´m going to get it in any way just because I can...I´m a big Arsenal fan – Up the Gunners!
When did you come to La Marina?
Me and my wife Carol, who passed away in 2017, decided to make the move (to retire!) to Spain in 2007. We were thinking of settling in Majorca but it was just too expensive. As part of our explorations we stayed in a friend´s villa in La Marina and grew to love the place so we bought an apartment in La Marina Village and then a house on the Urb in 2008. And I´m still there!
What have you been doing in La Marina?
So...let me think...I started up a men´s football team in 2008, I was doing that up until 2012...we played at the San Fulgencio stadium, San Fulgencio council helped and the team made it to a local league and won promotion! Then I began the Local Hero Award (with councillor Sam Hull) and after that I was involved with the charity organisation The Men´s Shed which really came to fruition in 2023 when we opened (officially opened by the British Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, no less!) a branch of The Men´s Shed here in La Marina. Now, of course, what I do is the Seniors Friendship Association.
How, and why, did the Seniors Friendship Association begin?
As we get older we can sometimes lose friends, family, loved ones and it can be harder, at a later age, to create new relationships with people. That´s what the SFA is about – a way for older people

to meet, to mingle, to chat, to form new bonds and interests and meet new friends. Th SFA happened because my son Carl (who had joined me and my wife in Spain in 2009) tragically passed away in 2024. Carl had recently inherited money from his grandmother and eventually, me being Carl´s next of kin, that money came to me. I absolutely wanted something good to come of that of money, as a tribute to Carl. So I used the money to buy the freehold of the building that is now, after much work by myself and my fellow SFA committee members and volunteers, the Senior Friendship Association – we´ve only been going since January and we already have 151 members...and growing!
What´s your favourite thing about La Marina?
What can I say...I like all of it...I´ve been here for years now, it´s a pleasant, calm place to live and, well, this is my life now and I´m happy!
And the future?
I want to carry on being fit and healthy enough to enjoy my life and I want to see continued involvement with, and growth in, the SFA!

As we move into June, life often becomes fuller and more outward-facing. As social gatherings increase, the pace of life quickens, and our energy is shared more freely with the world around us. In this expansion, it becomes especially important to care for our inner space with the same attention we give to our physical wellbeing.
Tending your energy is the practice of becoming aware of what you carry, and gently releasing what is not yours to hold. Just as we wash our hands or tidy our homes, we are also invited to clear and support our energetic field, allowing us to move through life with greater clarity, ease and grace.
Why Tending Your Energy Matters
We are constantly exchanging energy with our environment, often without realising it. Conversations, busy spaces, and emotional interactions can leave subtle imprints within us. Over time, this can feel like heaviness, fatigue, or a sense of being out of balance.
Caring for your energy is not about withdrawing from life, but about staying rooted within yourself as you move through it. When your energy is clear and grounded, you feel more present, more resilient, and more connected to your own inner rhythm.
Simple Daily Practices
Tending your energy does not need to be complicated. Small consistent practices can create a powerful shift.
Grounding - Stand or sit with both feet connected to the earth. Imagine roots gently extending from your body into the ground, anchoring and supporting you.
Breath Clearing - Take a slow inhale through your nose and a long exhale through your mouth, imagining any tension or heaviness leaving your body.
Water Awareness - As you shower or wash your hands, imagine the water clearing not
Caring For Your Inner Space
only your body, but also your energy field. These simple moments of awareness help reset your system throughout the day.
Supporting Your Energy
Support is not about building walls; it’s about strengthening your own field so you can remain centred.
You might try:
Protective Light Practice - Visualise a soft light surrounding your body, allowing in what supports you and gently filtering what does not.
Heart Connection - Place a hand on your heart and reconnect to your breath when you feel overwhelmed.
Daily Intention - Setting a quiet intention each morning, for example, “I move through today grounded, clear, and supported.”
Support begins with presence.
Clearing and Resetting
At the end of the day, take a moment to release what you may have picked up along the way.
You could:
Gently shake out your hands and body. Use sound, such as a bowl, bell or soft tone, to shift stagnant energy.
Sit quietly and imagine your energy returning fully to you.
These small rituals create space for rest and renewal.
Tending your energy is an act of selfrespect and awareness. The more you care for your inner space, the more naturally you move through life with clarity and balance. May this month support you in staying grounded, supported, and gently connected to your own steady centre.
Wishing you a calm, clear, and balanced June. With love and gratitude, Nicola, Namaste

Simon and Zoe explain how UK homeowners are releasing equity to unlock the
With more UK homeowners looking to spend time in Spain or invest in property abroad, financial guidance tailored to cross-border living has become increasingly important. Familyrun brokerage SJC Financial Planning has been helping clients navigate mortgages and equity release since 2010, offering a personal and highly tailored approach. We spoke to the team about helping UK nationals unlock property value to make their Spanish lifestyle dreams a reality.
Can you give us a little background to you and your company?
SJC Financial Planning was established in 2010. We are a family-run, FCAregulated brokerage specialising in expert independent mortgage and equity release advice.
We pride ourselves on the bespoke and personal service we provide to our clients, as well as the long-standing relationships we have built over many years. It is always lovely when we begin dealing with the sons and daughters of existing clients — who were children when we first worked with their parents — although that probably means we are getting older! It is very much a genuine family business.
What inspired you to focus on helping UK homeowners unlock property value specifically for life in Spain?
Having visited Alicante recently and spent time with friends in Gran Alacant, we saw first-hand that many UK nationals are looking to purchase property in Spain or raise capital against property they already own in either the UK or Spain. This may be for home improvements, property purchases, or a variety of other reasons.
There did not appear to be many similar services available locally, and we felt that UK nationals spending time in the area could really benefit from the specialist service we provide.

Many people dream of moving to Spain. What are the biggest financial misconceptions you see when they try to make that dream a reality?
Many people are unaware that they can use property owned in the UK to raise capital to help finance a property purchase in Spain.
While there are now restrictions around how long UK nationals can stay in Spain throughout the year, many people still enjoy splitting their time between the two countries and making the most of both lifestyles.
How does releasing equity from a UK property differ from taking out a traditional mortgage or loan?
There is no significant difference in the mortgage process when raising capital to purchase a property in Spain. Lenders are generally quite flexible and are often happy to lend for the purpose of purchasing an additional property, whether in the UK or abroad.
The process is usually quicker and more cost-effective when raising capital in the UK, as the Spanish purchase effectively becomes a cash sale rather than requiring
borrowing through a Spanish bank.
What types of clients typically come to you — are they mostly retirees, investors, or families seeking a lifestyle change?

As we are still based in the UK, we work with a broad cross-section of clients, ranging from first-time buyers to older homeowners considering equity release.
As we spend more time in Spain, we are increasingly seeing clients looking to purchase property in areas such as La Marina. These tend to be families wanting to enjoy more time in the sun, as well as recently retired clients looking to make the most of their retirement lifestyle.
What are the key risks or considerations people should understand before accessing capital from their home?
Taking out any mortgage — particularly equity release — is a major financial decision and is not suitable for everyone. We have a very thorough advice process and always encourage family discussions, often involving other family members where appropriate.
As an FCA-regulated firm, we are fully qualified in all aspects of the financial services we provide, and we take compliance extremely seriously. We also have a strong compliance background, having previously worked as a Senior Associate for the FCA before establishing SJC Financial Planning.
How has the demand for relocating or investing in Spain changed in recent years, especially post-pandemic?
Brexit and Covid have undoubtedly reduced the number of UK nationals buying property in Spain, often due to restrictions on the amount of time they can spend in the country.
However, there are still many people with property in the UK who are looking to buy their dream home in Spain and spend more time there — especially during the winter months when the weather in the UK can be particularly cold.
As a family-run business, how do your values shape the way you work with clients compared to larger financial institutions?
We pride ourselves on offering a highquality, personal service and are very “old school” in our approach. We will always make time for our clients and are happy to meet or speak with them at times that suit their schedules, which is often during evenings or weekends.
There is now a huge amount of information available online, and many large financial institutions operate almost entirely digitally. However, we passionately believe there is still a very important place for genuine conversations and personalised guidance to ensure every client receives the most suitable advice for their circumstances.
