Hello Everyone, Welcome to our September edition, Been quite hectic here at the magazine as the printer shuts down this month for a two week holiday, therefore giving us only 2 weeks to prepare this edition.

We would like to thank all of our advertisers for getting copy in on time to us.

When we deliver this edition, the new school will be about to open. With all of the landscaping it certainly looks a nice new facility to Gran Alacant.

The first week of this month see’s fiesta time in Santa Pola.

A local man with a local shop, someone you can talk to, who can point you to the best new system to use, that is if by the time the magazine is out, things have not improved.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.

The main news in the month of September, will be the opening on the 9th of Gran Alacants new school.

We have pictures elsewhere in this months issue.

A major problem had to be overcome, when it was realised that the builders had changed the plans so instead of the sewerage pipes coming out onto the Av Noruega junction, the builder diverted it to the private road outside the Monte y Mar houses.

After hurriedly arranged meetings and discussions the agreement was reached to lay pipes in the private road but then connect them in Av. Noruega down towards the Carabasi Bars. This redirection has had to be paid for by the builders of the school.

The New Park is in the final planning stages but where it will be located could not yet be divulged to us.

Last month we told you of the plans to improve the area along side El Clot. A sum of 101,000 euro has now been allocated for this project, plus other monies from local authorities, meaning that the whole piece of land in front of the Clot, on the Carabasi Road, from the beach end, past the Carabasi Bars and on to the recently landscaped roundabout at the end of the road will now come within the project.

The first part will be to clear the ground and tidy it all up, then a

small fence will be erected around the whole perimeter, which will then have have access points. The whole area will not be a park but will be kept in keeping with the natural environment.

Talking about the end roundabout of the Crabasi Road, people had mentioned to us about the lack of water to the newly planted shrubs.

The lady in the council office had also people reporting the same thing to her. When we spoke to Loreto she confirmed that this was now sorted and the plants would be getting the water they needed..

It shows that it is important for us all to be vigilant and report these things so that they can get sorted.

Along this stretch is where a great deal of water pipe construction has taken place, which among other things, should have improved some of the “smells” in that area. The smell is still there, the problem area is known, and it will be sorted.

Talking of roundabouts. We asked why the one by the post office is

always such a mess. There is a reason. The water company had a major problem there and that has now been solved. They did however, leave quite a mess, so after negotiations, money is now available to completely landscape this roundabout, including artificial grass. We are assured that it will look very nice. Outside of this roundabout, many trees have had to be replaced. Those that were originally there, were breaking up the pavement, so new trees will eleviate the problem.

Along the pathway between the Post Office and the To u r i s t information centre a row of trees is to be planted. The funds for this have been allocated and the planting should soon start.

It would be such a shame if a solution cannot be found, as the people of GA would lose the opportunity of a good night out and bars would lose extra revenue that this brings.

The residents along the road that joins Av Carabasi with Av N o r u e g a going down towards the clot, have asked if speed bumps can be build to kerb the speed of motorists. This has been looked into and work will soon take place to provide this.

Money has also been allocated to redo many pavements around the urbanisation which are in need of repair.

NOISE has become quite an issue between some residents and some bars.

Residents have been complaining to the Council that they and their faimily cannot begin to start sleeping until sometimes 4am. This means that the Town Hall are obviously obliged to help the residents and as we are aware, the police have been into some of the bars, asking for the appropriate licenses. The Council have no intention of closing bars down, but have to mediate between them and

Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the kerb and stopped just centimetres from a large plate glass window.

Local side Alicante Hercules drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in a pre season friendy at Alicante Stadium.

Whilst watching - it made us think.

Real Murcia were the nearest geographical local team, last season, to be playing in Spains top La Liga.

Unfortunately they ended up getting relegated to the league below which now includes Elche and both of the Alicante teams that share the Alicante Stadium.

This sets up the opportunity in the coming season, to see a few local derbies, with the local teams all in with a chance of promotion to LA Liga.

Google´s free Photo screensaver Go to http://pack.google.com and download the Google photos screensaver. Agree to the license and follow the prompts to install the software. Click on start, all programs, Google photos screensaver and choose the configure option and click the settings button. Now you can choose to use photos from the web, or from your own computer, or from Picasa.

Desktop shortcut key If you have lots of windows open, but need to see the desktop, a quick way to do this is to hold the window key (bottom left next to alt key) and press the D key. This will take you to the desktop, and press the same key combination again to return to wherever you were at before opening the desktop.

Danger of running the Safari web browser Apple makes a big deal — and lots of funny commercials — around the security profile of its products. On the Safari download site, the boast is that users get “worry-free Web browsing on any computer” because,“Apple engineers designed Safari to be secure from day one.” This is not true at all, in fact when it comes to responding to legitimate security threats, Apple is light years away from living up to the messages in those commercials.

The Safari carpet bombing vulnerability is one current example of Apple really missing the boat about a serious issue affecting its customers. It has been proved that it is possible for a malicious Web site to litter the userʼs Desktop (Windows) or Downloads directory (~/Downloads/ in OSX) with executables masquerading as legitimate icons.

This happens because the Safari browser cannot be configured to obtain the userʼs permission before it downloads a resource. Safari downloads the resource without the userʼs consent and places it in a default location (unless changed).

Therefore, if you use Safari on Windows, I have one piece of advice: Donʼt.

Backing up your Contacts A lot of people lose all of their precious contact details when there is a catastrophic failure of their computer, or when they are upgrading to a new computer. To ensure this does not happen to you, send your contact´s details to a webmail service, such as Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail or Gmail. These services will keep a backup copy of contacts, and are also useful to use as a second email address which you can use whenever you are forced to give an email address to a company. This new address will collect all the junk mail you will surely get.

I am going to use Hotmail as an example, but all use a similar method. Once signed in to Hotmail, click on Contacts and then click on Options at the upper right corner. At the very bottom of the list you will see Import contacts. You should now see two options: option 1 will do the work for you if you use Outlook or Outlook Express, option two needs you to choose a format or external mailbox. Where it mentions a CSV file, this stands for comma separated value and is merely a standard method of ensuring the relevant information enters the correct boxes. No use having your name in the address field.

CARIBBEAN PINEAPPLE Ingredients.

One fresh pineapple cut in half, keep leaves intact.

Chop all the pineapple flesh into bite size pieces.

Selection of fruits or mixed fruit in tins in their own juice all chopped into bite size pieces.

Dark/spiced rum.

2 tbspns of muscovado/soft brown sugar.

Small cup of fresh orange juice.

Nutmeg to taste.

Fresh cream.

Fresh mint to decorate.

Method.

Take out the inside of the pineapple discarding the middle core being careful to leave a lining in the pineapple otherwise the juices will leak out.

Chop the flesh up into bite size pieces.

In a bowl mix the brown sugar, fresh orange juice and rum to acquired taste. (more is better!)

Tip all the fruits into the mix stirring gently to coat evenly.

Spoon the fruits into the pineapple halves, sprinkle over the nutmeg, cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or longer.

When ready to serve decorate with fresh mint leaves and serve with fresh single or double cream.

The

entertainment SCENE in and around

gran alacant During the summer months of July and August there is a very special venue located on the Santa Pola beach road that leads to the Carabasi area of Gran Alacant. You know, the road that has amazing views, but seems to go on for ever.

About halfway down this road, situated amongst the trees and picnic areas, directly below El Faro lighthouse lies Club Amanacer. The club opens at 11.30pm and continues until 8.00am, so after a quick starter drink in one of the other beach bars we headed for the main course around 2am. Definitely a place for the in crowd and mainly Spanish, with an average age of around 21 (one year younger than me) this club rocks. The DJ cunningly blends an excellent mix of all the latest dance genres and pop remixes to please everyone and the atmosphere is very warming.

A free return bus is provided from Gran Alacant on the hour every hour. The last night of this year, I think is Saturday 13th of September so if you are reading this mag before that date then there is no excuse. Dress to thrill, and take a nap in the day before you go or you will definitely need to the day after. Once you have paid into the club you can leave anytime

Amanacer, roughly translated into English means the rebirth of your soul.

I sadly didn't stay till sunrise, but I can guess how that name came about.

SKIN & COAT CARE Most dogs, even long haired ones, never have problems with hairballs, but in case of cats, it becomes a very common and important problem, because they spend the third part of their time (except when they sleep, of course), cleaning themselves, so they usually swallow big quantities of fur which may produce vomiting, and sometimes even intestinal obstructions.

For preventing this problem, the best option is providing them regularly a malt jelly which will dissolve hairballs.

Normally the malt is very tasty for the cat and they love it. Hairball problems are sometimes also seen in rabbits and prairie dogs, species which have a very important self-cleaning habit.

The coat colour depends on the breed, and the number of different combinations is very high in dogs and cats. The colour is supposed not to change in an adult animal, but in some cases may lighten due to sun, shampoos or even their own saliva exposure: this is the reason because, in white dogs, is seen very often a red/brown colour around the mouth (due to saliva. If the same colour appears at the feet that means the dog is licking himself. This is the firs symptom of a skin allergic problem, and it’s specially common in Westies. Time to see the Vet!), around the eyes (tears), or genital area (urine).

In these cases, there’s no way to give the hair the original colour back, because the fur is not dirty or stained, just oxidized. It’s a similar case when the white hair becomes yellow by the direct sunlight. In case of black hair, some red reflections may appear by the sunlight.

Special shampoos for recovering white or black colour are sometimes too aggressive, and will never be useful if what we have is oxidized or sunburnt

hair. Of course, just like in old people, some white hair may appear in old dogs, or in some other cases, moulting after moulting, the coat may lighten or darken, but always keeping the main colour. Appearing of black spots as time goes by is also common and absolutely normal.

The frequency of shampooing is also important for the coat health: a shampooing becomes absolutely necessary if our pet is dirty, but if he lives indoors and is brushed regularly, once a month will be enough for keeping him clean. Shampoos, perfumes and conditioners must be specific ones for pets, because pets skin pH (+-7), is quite different from ours (+-5), so we may cause irritations, itching or dryness if we don’t use the proper shampoo.

You’d better go to a Vet practice or a specialized pet shop to get the right one.

Direct sunlight may be very dangerous for white cats and dogs, and even more in summer (in cats, a very aggressive and invasive cancer at the ears skin may appear in cats due to sunlight overexposure!!). It’s very important not to walk white dogs in summer from 11:00 to 16:00h, and not to allow them to sleep for hours under the sunlight. If necessary, we can use a children sun filter cream in them.

Finally, we’d like to remind you that the first symptom of a high number of diseases is a skin alteration, so, for example, if you notice a hair loss out of the normal moulting period, it’s time to see the Vet.
