ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS Oscar Valenzuela Councillor for Gran Alacant & Education Q: Thank you for improving the park near the health centre Hi Lou, I simply wanted to ask if it would be possible for you to pass on my thanks to the councillors of Gran Alacant for the improvements that have been carried out around the children’s playground next to the health centre. I think the installation of natural bark mulch around the landscaped areas has been a great success, along with the addition of the wooden picnic tables and the book exchange shelter I hope they can continue along this path, whenever the municipal budget and priorities allow, because these types of projects help make Gran Alacant a more pleasant place for everyone. I would also like to take the opportunity to share a couple of constructive suggestions. It would be fantastic to install a drinking water fountain, such as those introduced by Aguas de Alicante.

And secondly, an initiative to encourage people not to throw cigarette butts on the ground, similar to the voting ashtray bins that were installed in London some years ago.

NEW GRAN ALACANT MEDICAL CENTRE MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER The new Gran Alacant medical centre has taken another important step forward, with construction expected to begin in 2027.

Santa Pola Town Hall has received a favourable preliminary technical report from the Department of Health regarding the municipal plot where the new facility will be built. The 5,450 m² site is located on Calle Monte de Santa Pola, next to El Faro school. The next stages will include the tendering of the project design, followed by the construction contract, which has a starting budget of €4.7 million. The Town Hall has also approved an investment of €773,362 for preparing the site and building access roads. If the planned timetable is maintained, work is expected to start during 2027, with construction estimated to take around 18 months. The new single-storey building will have around 1,635 m² of built space and will replace the current medical facility located on Avenida de Escandinavia.

It will include six GP consultation rooms, five nursing rooms, a paediatric area, maternity services, treatment rooms, reception areas and facilities for staff and administration. This long-awaited project represents a major improvement in healthcare services for the growing Gran Alacant community. NEW STICKERS TO HELP KEEP GRAN ALACANT CLEAN Urbaser has started installing new information stickers around Gran Alacant to make it easier for residents to access details about the free collection service for unwanted items.

The stickers include contact information to request the collection of items such as furniture, mattresses and electrical appliances, as well as a reminder of the correct rubbish disposal schedule. Residents are encouraged to use this free, convenient and responsible service rather than leaving unwanted items on the streets.

Act of Kindness Raises €500 for Happy Animals Charity Act of kindness has helped raise an impressive €500 for Happy Animals Charity, thanks to the dedication of local residents and businesses coming together to support a great cause. The donation was recently presented to Mona Nowak from Happy Animals, who was delighted and grateful for the generous contribution. The money was raised through the sale of beautiful handmade knitted items created by Pam Hardy, with the support of local businesses Quicksave Gran Alacant, Tommy’s and Molly Malone’s, who kindly helped sell the creations. A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who purchased the handmade items and supported this fundraising effort. Every contribution, big or small, helps charities like Happy Animals continue their valuable work caring for animals in need.

The fundraising efforts will now continue, with the next nominated charity being BARC (Busot Animal Rescue Concern) in Busot, another wonderful organisation dedicated to helping animals in need.

The only man who can uncover a flawless plot to commit an appalling crime against humanity. This is one of the best thrillers I have read for a long time. Full of nonstop suspense, twists and turns - I could not put it down.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

Introducing

A new social group has arrived in Gran Alacant, bringing together local men, residents, and visitors for friendship, fun, and a chance to support the wonderful area we call home. The Gran Alacant Gentleman’s Club was created with a simple idea in mind: to meet once a month, enjoy a local activity, discover more of the area, and support local businesses by spending time together in the community. The group already has around 40 members, including permanent residents, homeowners, and those who own holiday properties and visit throughout the year. The aim is to create a welcoming group where everyone can join in whenever they are in the area. Since forming, the group has enjoyed a variety of activities and social gatherings. Earlier this year, members enjoyed an afternoon of green bowling at Monte Mar, which was very well attended, followed by refreshments at The Pub in Massa Square.

A fun-filled racing afternoon at Websters Sports Bar brought plenty of laughs and friendly competition, followed by a great meal together at Tandoori Taco. Another popular event saw members take part in a group walk from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola, where they were joined by others who couldn’t make the walk but came along to meet the group. After enjoying drinks and tapas in the sunshine, everyone headed back to Gran Alacant having spent a fantastic few hours socialising and making new friends.

UPCOMING EVENTS The Gentleman’s Club has plenty more planned over the coming months: 3RD SEPTEMBER Curry night at Azarafan Restaurant, Massa Square, from 6pm. The group has also hosted a Darts and Pool competition at Redz Bar, complete with trophies awarded to the winners — proving that a little friendly competition always adds to the fun! The Gentleman’s Club is about much more than just activities. It is a chance to meet new people, share stories, enjoy good food and drinks, and spend time together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Membership is completely free — there are no joining fees. Members simply pay for any activities or meals they choose to take part in. Sometimes friendships are made in the most unexpected ways. At one recent gathering, two members started chatting in a local bar and discovered they had attended the same school more than 40 years ago — and had not seen each other since leaving. It really is a small world!

17TH SEPTEMBER A first attempt at Petanque! Members will meet at the Petanque courts outside the medical centre near La Piedra at 3pm, followed by drinks at a local bar. Anyone attending who has a set of Petanque balls is asked to bring them along if possible. Food options will be decided on the day. 4TH OCTOBER A scenic trip to the Elche Waterfalls. Members will leave around 1pm and spend time enjoying the beautiful surroundings before returning to Gran Alacant for refreshments. Those joining should meet at the Mercadona car park near the car wash area at 12.30pm. The walk includes some uneven ground and steep steps, so sturdy footwear is recommended — but the views make it well worthwhile. 3RD NOVEMBER A walk from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola via the lighthouse, followed by refreshments at a local restaurant on the harbour walkway. Members can walk or take a taxi back to Gran Alacant afterwards, with further refreshments available for those who wish to continue the afternoon. DECEMBER Plans are currently being discussed for a Christmas meal, possibly with entertainment and a private room at a local restaurant.

The Gran Alacant Ladies (GALs) continue to prove that even the hottest Costa Blanca summer can’t slow down a strong community. Whether it’s lunch, coffee, or a breezy coastal walk, our ladies show up, support one another, and keep the social spirit of Gran Alacant thriving. At our August coffee morning, held at Duna Restaurant, we welcomed 22 ladies - a turnout we believe is our highest yet. BACKGROUND The Norwegian Club is located in the Sierra Mar Urbanisation of Gran Alacant and operates from September through to May. The club was established in 1999. We (our members) bought the property in Sierra Mar in 2001. We are a voluntary organisation with no employees. TODAY Today we have around 500 members. Most of our members are Norwegians with a few Swedish members. Here you can meet old

friends and make new ones. ACTIVITIES & EVENTS The club runs many social activities. Spanish Classes Spanish classes started in September and runs 4 times a week on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 - 11.45am. Wine Lottery Every Thursday from 11am - 2pm, we organise an extremely popular wine lottery. We recently had a record number of 165 members to turn up for this event. Funds raised from the wine lottery goes towards building maintenance and other charitable activities. Friday Activities We are open on Friday from 12-2pm for coffee and then again from 8-11pm for social gatherings. Other activities include; bridge club, painting club, day coach trips, walking tours and evening parties. HELPING OUR MEMBERS We aim to help our members as much as we can. If anyone gets sick or needs help translating in Spanish, we are there for them. We also hire out children’s equipment over the summer months for our members. Interview with Sarah Irene Haycock BEM RECIPIENT SARAH IRENE HAYCOCK REFLECTS ON RAISING £2.5 MILLION FOR TEENAGE CANCER TRUST After 15 years of fundraising and raising an incredible £2.5 million for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Sarah Irene Haycock has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in King Charles III's Birthday Honours. We caught up with Sarah to talk about the inspiration behind her remarkable journey, her unforgettable visit to Buckingham Palace, and why she'll never stop championing young people with cancer. Q: Firstly, congratulations on receiving the BEM. How did it feel to receive such a prestigious honour after 15 years of fundraising

Sarah: It was an absolute honour and a complete surprise because I had no idea I'd been nominated. To think that both the Prime Minister and King Charles had read my nomination and agreed I should receive the British Empire Medal ... WOW! It's something I'll treasure forever. Q: What inspired you to begin fundraising and did you ever imagine you'd raise £2.5 million?

Sarah: My son inspired everything. He was diagnosed with leukaemia at just 14 years old and endured four years of chemotherapy. Watching him fight such a life-threatening illness was devastating for our whole family. During his treatment in Southampton, I realised there was a real need for a specialist unit dedicated to teenagers and young adults with cancer. I never imagined we'd raise anything close to £2.5 million, but once we started, I knew we had to keep going. Q: What has been your proudest fundraising moment?

Sarah: Without doubt, seeing my son become the face of the charity. He bravely shared his story and spoke at many of our fundraising events. He became such an incredible ambassador, helping people

connect with the cause on a deeply personal level. Q: Fundraising on this scale can't have been easy. What kept you motivated?

Sarah: It was certainly challenging, especially finding fresh ideas to keep people engaged. But I was incredibly fortunate to have a fantastic committee and amazing public support. Hearing my son's story encouraged people to think about their own children and families and that inspired them to help. Q: You attended the Buckingham Palace Garden Party in May this year. What was that experience like?

Sarah: It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Seeing King Charles and Queen Camilla was a real highlight. Everything was beautifully organised, from entering the Palace to the wonderful food and incredibly attentive staff. It was also very special to be surrounded by so many people being recognised for making a difference in their communities. Q: Is there a particular achievement that reminds you why your fundraising mattered?

Sarah: Much of the money we raised helped open the Teenage Cancer Trust unit

in Southampton. I was there for the first turf cutting and later for its official opening. Seeing that unit now being used by so many families is incredibly emotional. It gives teenagers the chance to receive treatment in an age-appropriate environment where family and friends can stay with them, helping them experience as much normality as possible during an incredibly difficult time. Q: Many readers in Gran Alacant know your sister, Julie Parker, through her poems in the GA Advertiser. You also visit the area regularly. What do you enjoy most about your time here?

Sarah: I always love visiting Gran Alacant, especially spending time with my sister Julie and my brother-in-law. They're such sociable people and introduce us to so many wonderful friends. Everyone is so warm

and welcoming and we've enjoyed some fantastic meals in the local restaurants. It's a lovely place to visit. Q: Finally, what advice would you give to anyone thinking about supporting a charity or starting their own fundraising journey?

Sarah: Set yourself clear goals and make sure you have plenty of support around you. It's also important to understand any procedures required by your local charity commission. Above all, remember that every donation matters. Whether it's a pound or a thousand pounds, every penny makes a difference and every contribution deserves recognition. Sarah's remarkable commitment has changed countless lives, proving that one family's determination can create a lasting legacy for generations of young cancer patients. Her BEM is not only recognition of an extraordinary fundraising achievement but also a fitting tribute to the compassion, resilience and hope that have inspired so many people along the way.

FIVE CATS’ JOURNEY TO SAFETY As promised, I am sending you an update about the 5 cats you tried to help me find a new home for after my friend Ditske passed away. Luckily, this story has a very happy ending. Finally, after 8 long months, the 5 cats have found a safe and loving place to stay. They have travelled far away to Sierra, Murcia, where kind and passionate people provide a home for abandoned and mistreated animals. The rescue centre is home to many dogs and cats, as well as two horses, a duck, a turkey, and chickens. All the animals live freely across the large grounds. They can come in and out of the shelters whenever they want, and they have learned to live together peacefully, without fights. My 5 cats are now staying in an open-sided shelter where they have safe places to hide whenever they need some quiet time. For the first month, they will stay there to get used to their new surroundings, the daily routines, the new people, and all the other cats and dogs. After this settling-in period, they will be allowed to go outside and explore the whole area freely.

There are already a few other cats there from our sometimes not-so-cat-friendly Gran Alacant, so I am incredibly happy that my 5 cats are safe now too.

TICK INFESTATION This year we have seen some news about an increased environmental number of ticks, specially in August. Valencian agricultors are warning about the appearing of lots of ticks at the coutryside. They blame the uprising wildlife (mostly rabbits and wild boars) and the fact that there are more and more idle fields. Of course, its true that animals and grass are the two things ticks need for their life cycle. Ticks live at vegetated soil or where wood is. You cannot find ticks at tarmac or concrete, or at the beach. They must live in places with grass or bushes, or at cultured areas, which also implies public parks and gardens at the cities, vegetable gardens and mountains at the countryside, and also wooden cabins and firewood storages. Ticks suck animals (and humans) blood. They spend long periods hidden between the leaves of the plants waiting for a host, and when they feel it´s approaching, they jump on it and grab its fur (or clothes). After this, little by little they search for the best place for biting the host and start sucking its blood. They prefer areas with thin skin, difficult access, and lots of blood vessels: between the toes and earlobe crease are the typical zones.

tick saliva may also contain several vectorborne parasites, viruses and bacteria. According to statistics, it´s quite uncommon at this area (eastern Spain) ticks transmitting serious diseases, but uncommon doesn´t mean impossible. If we are bitten by a tick we can go to the nearest Centro de Salud to get some help for getting rid of it. We must inform our family doctor we have been bitten, because some of these vector-borne diseases take several weeks after the bite to start showing symptoms, so the day of the bite is too early to test the blood. It´s very important to remind the symptoms of some vector-borne diseases are very similar to autoimmune diseases, so if we inform the doctor when symptoms appear we have been bitten several weeks ago, it will take it much shorter to stablish a right diagnosis.

Animals who spend most of the day cleaning themselves, such as cats, are able to eliminate ticks very easily, so it´s uncommon to see ticks in a healthy cat. Hedgehogs are usually full of them. When a tick arrives to its chosen place, it bites the skin with its special mouth and it remains there for several days. When its stomach is full of blood, it gets released for the skin and falls on the floor for starting the digestion, which will last gor several days. Ticks saliva contains an anaesthetic and an anticoagulant, so the host cannot feel the bite and blood flows easily. Unfortunately,

We have been informed that it may take some time time to establish a regular time, but as the school does not open until 7th September then the pitch at the Sports Centre in GA should be available. Any changes will be communicated via Whatsapp. As intimated in the last edition, the temporary(!) school has expanded significantly with the likely outcome being even less times being available to others. Thanks to those who attended the recent social event at The London Tavern and thanks to the staff there for looking after us. The next event will be in November which will also be the AGM.

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL Women’s Walking Football in Gran Alacant continues to grow with new projects and fresh energy ahead. Due to strong interest and commitment, sessions will continue under the watchful eye of coach Jim Fraser, with support from GA Homefinders. The focus of the sessions is fun and fitness. These sessions are open to everyone in Gran Alacant, whether you are a resident or just visiting for a holiday. Participants are encouraged to join in, have fun, and enjoy the experience without taking things too seriously, followed by a casual session debrief at the El Tio Chato cafeteria. Sessions take place on Thursdays at the Astroturf pitch at the sports centre in Gran Alacant. We will be taking a summer break in July and August and September.

Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! Currently, Gran Alacant Walking Football club meets each Wednesday on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). An update on the day and time for the new sessions will be intimated. The cost is only 1 euro per session. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below). Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. Some of these will continue over the summer but earlier in the morning to void the worst of the heat.
