OCTOBER 2026 ISSUE 261

Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representatives. Working for the local community since January 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like to raise with our councillors, please email info@granalacantadvertiser.com

ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS Oscar Valenzuela Councillor for Gran Alacant & Education Q: Shortage of WC on Carabassi Beach Hello Lou, This is my first time writing to you. I’ve noticed that the area of Carabassi Beach near The Salty Monkey no longer seems to have any public toilets. Unfortunately, I regularly see people going into the sand dunes to relieve themselves, with toilet paper then being left behind. Apart from being unpleasant, this is obviously not good for such a beautiful and protected natural area.

Borja Merino Councillor for Gran Alacant Tourism & Health

The shortage of toilet facilities at the beach this year has been heavily criticised by many beachgoers and local residents, so you are certainly not alone in raising this issue. Hopefully, Elche Town Hall will take notice of the complaints and we will see the muchneeded toilets return for next summer season.

Thank you, Neil

Q: Bins Hello Lou, First of all, I would like to say that the bins around Gran Alacant have certainly been looking slightly better lately, which is good to see. However, the ‘special’ recycling bins opposite La Piedra - for batteries, coffee capsules and similar items don’t seem to be getting emptied and are becoming increasingly full.

GA Advertiser Reply: Thank you, Neil, for sending us your first question! Carabassi Beach is actually managed by Elche Town Hall, which normally provides public toilets during the summer season.

GA Advertiser Reply: Thank you for letting us know. We have reported the issue to Urbaser and hopefully the bins have been emptied by now. We have also asked for them to be checked and emptied more regularly in future.

Could you please raise this issue and find out whether there are any plans to provide toilet facilities in this part of the beach?

Q: Could a new one-way road improve traffic flow in Gran Alacant? Hello Lou, We have owned a holiday home at GA (Olivo de Oro) since 1999 and have been involved with the development of the site ever since. Over the years, a great deal of positive work has been carried out, but one area that appears to have received limited attention is traffic management. Traffic has now become a significant issue, and it is clear that improvements are needed to make the area safer and more accessible for residents, visitors and pedestrians. One possible solution could be the creation of a one-way road system starting from the 90-degree bend where the flashing warning signs are located, before reaching the first roundabout. From there, the route could potentially follow the existing footpath/ wooded area between Brisas del Faro and El Faro, allowing one-way traffic to continue down towards the BBVA bank. This could also provide an opportunity to create a wider pedestrian walkway, add landscaping such as palm trees, and improve safety for everyone using the area. With plans already in place for further development, including additional hotels, houses and apartments, it may be worth considering traffic solutions now before the situation becomes even more challenging. Could this be something for the community and developers to explore? Kind Regards, Karl

GA Advertiser Answer: Thank you, Karl, for taking the time to share your suggestion with us. We have forwarded your proposal to our local councillors for their consideration. With further residential developments and additional hotels planned for Gran Alacant, we agree that traffic management will increasingly need to be reviewed to ensure the area remains safe and accessible as it continues to grow. We always welcome constructive ideas from residents and readers about ways Gran Alacant could be improved. Q: Are there any coin changing machines in the area? Hello, At our local shopping centre in England, the supermarkets have coin changing machines where you can pour in handfuls of loose change. The machine counts the coins and gives you a voucher for the appropriate value, which can either be spent in the store or exchanged for cash, less a small commission. Are there any similar coin changing machines in Gran Alacant? Regards, William GA Advertiser Answer: As far as we are aware, there are currently no coin changing machines of this type in Gran Alacant. The nearest one we know of is at Carrefour in Santa Pola, where you can take your loose change to be counted.

Gran Alacant News GETTING TO GRAN ALACANT JUST GOT A LITTLE EASIER! Travelling from Alicante-Elche Airport is set to become a little more convenient, with new designated Bolt pick-up points being introduced at the airport. The new pick-up areas should make it quicker and easier for passengers to locate their booked vehicle after arriving, particularly during busy travel periods. Passengers can also reserve a Bolt airport transfer up to 90 days in advance through the Bolt app, allowing visitors to arrange their onward journey before they travel. With Gran Alacant located just a short drive from Alicante-Elche Airport, the new service provides another convenient transport option for residents, holiday homeowners and visitors travelling to and from the area. HELP KEEP GRAN ALACANT CLEAN Santa Pola Town Hall is once again calling on residents to use waste containers correctly and help keep Gran Alacant clean and pleasant for everyone.

Residents are reminded that the Town Hall provides a FREE collection service for furniture and other bulky household items, helping to prevent unwanted items being left beside bins or on public roads. To arrange a collection, call 966 69 39 55 or WhatsApp 639 537 476.

KEEPING GRAN ALACANT CLEAN Cleaning teams have been busy across Gran Alacant, carrying out work to keep streets and public areas clean and well maintained. Santa Pola Town Hall says the ongoing programme aims to provide a cleaner and more pleasant environment for both residents and visitors.

THE €16 MILLION, 200-ROOM APARTHOTEL IN ARENALES DEL SOL, ELCHE, IS APPLYING FOR A LICENSE

of new facilities, including six swimming pools, landscaped gardens, restaurants and cafés, leisure areas, open-air and underground parking, and a spacious spa and wellness centre. The development has been the subject of debate due to its location next to the protected Clot de Galvany nature reserve. Environmental groups have raised concerns about the impact on the nearby natural area, and the licence application is currently open to public consultation before a final decision is made.

The developer, Miraclot SL, has officially applied for the environmental licence needed before Elche Town Hall can issue the building permit. The project will transform the large vacant plot opposite Carabassí Beach into a modern holiday resort featuring around 200 one- and two-bedroom apartments spread across a low-rise complex designed to blend into the surrounding area. Residents and visitors can expect a range

Although there is no confirmed construction start date yet, the application shows the project is very much alive after several years of delays and changes, including earlier plans for a car park and a caravan site that never went ahead. Why it matters for Gran Alacant & Arenales If approved, this will be one of the largest tourism investments in the area in recent years, bringing new accommodation, restaurants and leisure facilities, as well as more year-round visitors to Arenales del Sol and neighbouring Gran Alacant.

Act of Kindness Dolls Support BARC The wonderful Kindness Dolls, lovingly hand-knitted by local resident Pam Hardy, are continuing to raise money for good causes and the next chosen charity to benefit will be BARC (Busot Animal Rescue Concern). Pam spends many hours creating her beautiful dolls and other knitted items, with proceeds from their sale donated to charity. Her latest fundraising efforts will help BARC continue its important work caring for and supporting animals in need. The Kindness Dolls and Pam’s other handmade creations can be found on display at Quicksave International Supermarket, Tommy’s, Molly Malone’s and The London Tavern, where you can purchase your favourite while helping a very worthwhile cause. It is a lovely example of how one person’s time and talent, combined with the generosity of our local community, can make a real difference. A big thank you to Pam for all the care that goes into every creation, to the local businesses supporting her fundraising,

and of course to everyone who purchases one. Every little bit helps!

Book of the month by Beth A compelling a book on the future of our universe

My Recommended Book of the Month

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate last-chance mission to save planet Earth. Except that right now he does not know that. He cannot even remember his own name let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he has been asleep for a very, very long time. He has been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but 2 corpses for company. His crew mates dead, his memories returning slowly, Ryland realises that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurling through space on this tiny ship, it is up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. With the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he has got to do it all alone. Or does he? I do not often read Science Fiction but thought I would give this one a go. I was surprised that it caught my interest (though for me there was too much scientific and maths included) but if you are interested in speculative interstellar sci-fi adventure, you will love this book. It has also been made into a film.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

A Wonderful Autumn Fayre in Aid of ASPETGA First of all, a huge thank you to Stella and Kathryn for once again organising such a wonderful Autumn Fayre in aid of ASPETGA. These lovely community events take a great deal of work to put together, and their continued dedication and enthusiasm are very much appreciated. The latest fayre was another fantastic success, with a great turnout and plenty to enjoy. A big thank you also goes to ASPETGA, Skippers and The Belfry for hosting the event and helping to make everyone feel so welcome. There was a wonderful selection of stalls, including lots of new faces this time, as well as a tombola and raffle organised by Dawn, Gill, Sharon, Sofiya, Rocco and Isabelle. Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of everyone who took part, an impressive €335 was raised. Visitors were also treated to some fabulous entertainment from Sue and the Gran Alacant Stompers, who helped create a lively atmosphere throughout the event. Congratulations to the lucky raffle winners Simona, Rosa, Lesley and Jo, and thank you to everyone who came along, supported the stalls, bought raffle and tombola tickets and helped make the day such a success. Another lovely Gran Alacant community event supporting a very worthwhile local cause - well done to everyone involved!

Coming Full Circle with

GA BootCamps

by Lynne Lowe As the summer season draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what a roller coaster year it has been for GA BootCamps and honestly, I couldn’t be more grateful. This summer certainly didn’t go according to plan. After Bernar’s place went up in flames during one of our classes then subsequently closed, we suddenly found ourselves without a venue. The whole story behind what happened continues to baffle and sadden me, but I’m a great believer in “everything happens for a reason.” And perhaps, in a strange way, this setback brought me exactly where I‘m meant to be. This summer we were fortunate enough to secure a new venue at La Marina Sport Complex Pool, and what an amazing facility it is. It has given us the opportunity to continue our Aqua classes and, even more importantly, to meet lots of old and new faces along the way. There is something quite magical about realising that my journey in Spain has come full circle. I’m now back teaching in La Marina, where I first started giving classes when I moved to Spain many years ago. We’re back in the park near the Repsol garage, where I started my BootCamp classes. And I’m back at The London Tavern, formerly Los Dados, where I held my very first smallgroup training sessions for the lovely family who used to run the place. When you look back, you don’t always

CURRENT VENUE AT LA MARINA SPORT COMPLEX realise how much of a journey you’ve been on until suddenly you find yourself standing in the place where it all began. The universe really does work in mysterious ways. I want to thank our BootCampers. Their continued support has meant so much to me. Despite the changes and challenges, they have kept showing up, supporting the classes, bringing their energy and enthusiasm, and helping us continue to build something that feels like much more than just a fitness group. We’re building a real fitness community, one where people come to exercise, but also to laugh, chat, encourage each other and have fun. Our monthly events have become a big part of that too, bringing everyone together outside of the classes and creating friendships that go far beyond fitness. Alongside the venue challenges, I’ve also been struggling with bilateral hip osteoarthritis for far longer than I care to admit. It hasn’t just affected my movement, but my everyday life and my happiness. My hips pop, crack and hurt every single day which is frustrating when you’re used to feeling strong and active. I’ve had to adapt the exercises I teach and accept that some things my body simply doesn’t want to do anymore. I’m also learning that adapting doesn’t mean giving up - it means listening to my body, working with it and finding different ways to keep

PREVIOUS VENUE AT BERNAR'S PLACE, GRAN ALACANT

moving. The most important lesson is that it has given me a greater understanding of the challenges many others face on a daily basis. And that is where our Hellen comes in. She agreed to help me with the classes at a time when I was ready to throw in the towel. She has been my absolute ROCK. Whenever I’ve wanted to give up, she’s been the one encouraging me to keep going. She is incredibly dedicated, always eager to learn and up for every bit of training I throw her way. She gives 100% and is always happy to help. I honestly couldn’t ask for anyone better by my side. If I could clone her, I absolutely would! I’m incredibly grateful for everything she does and, most importantly, for the wonderful person she is. But all of this has also taught me something important: you don’t have to be perfect to keep moving. Sometimes you adapt. Sometimes you slow down. Sometimes someone else takes over. And sometimes you simply turn up and do what you can.

1ST VENUE AT THE POSH CLUB, LA MARINA

And that is exactly what I want GA BootCamps to be about.

YOU are what makes GA BootCamps special.

Moving your body, feeling good, having fun and surrounding yourself with people who lift you up.

Here’s to the end of another fantastic summer, and to whatever winter adventures come our way!

Looking back over this year, I feel incredibly proud of what we’ve created and incredibly thankful for the people who have helped make it happen.

Love & light, Lynne

To every person who has turned up to a class, supported us, joined an event, encouraged me, laughed with me or simply kept coming back week after week for the banter - THANK YOU.

Celbrating Molly Malone's 15th Anniversary "When we first opened Molly Malone’s in Gran Alacant 15 years ago, we wanted to create a place where people could come together, enjoy a drink, listen to good music and, most importantly, feel at home. In those early days, Gran Alacant was much quieter and things were very different. We had a lot of enthusiasm and plenty of hard work ahead of us, but we were determined to make it work. What we remember most is the people. From the beginning, we had a wonderful mix of locals, expats and visitors, and over the years many customers have become good friends. And now, 15 years later, we have a fantastic atmosphere. That’s probably what makes us most proud - seeing people coming through the doors, enjoying themselves, meeting friends and creating memories. Molly Malone’s has become much more than just a pub; it’s a real community, and We are very grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey."

UPCOMING EVENTS The Gentleman’s Club has plenty more planned over the coming months: 4TH OCTOBER A scenic trip to the Elche Waterfalls. Members will leave around 1pm and spend time enjoying the beautiful surroundings before returning to Gran Alacant for refreshments. Those joining should meet at the Mercadona car park near the car wash area at 12.30pm. The walk includes some uneven ground and steep steps, so sturdy footwear is recommended - but the views make it well worthwhile. Following last month’s introduction to the Gran Alacant Gentleman’s Club, The idea behind the club remains simple: get together once a month, enjoy a great local activity, have a few laughs and make the most of the fantastic community around us. With members ranging from permanent residents to holiday homeowners and regular visitors, there is always an opportunity to meet someone new. One of the great things about the club is the variety of people it brings together. You never quite know who you might meet or what conversation might develop. Our gatherings have already produced some wonderful stories, from old friendships being rediscovered to complete strangers finding they have plenty in common. There is also a strong local element to everything we do. By choosing local bars, restaurants, venues and activities, we get to enjoy ourselves while supporting the businesses that make Gran Alacant such a great place to live and visit. Whether it’s a competitive afternoon, a walk, a meal or simply a drink and a chat, the emphasis is always on enjoying ourselves in good company. Membership remains completely free, and there is no obligation to attend every event. If you’re in Gran Alacant and fancy meeting some friendly faces, why not come along to our next gathering? New members are always welcome!

3RD NOVEMBER A walk from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola via the lighthouse, followed by refreshments at a local restaurant on the harbour walkway. MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR:

Geoff

Known locally for supplying quiz questions to The GA Advertiser, Geoff Young has a lifelong fascination with unusual facts and testing his memory. Although he insists he is “not really a big quizzer,” he enjoys solving clues rather than making random guesses. Geoff credits Keith and Donna Briscoe with teaching him the finer points of quizzing and steering him away from what he calls the “uneducated guess.” Geography is Geoff’s favourite subject when writing quiz questions, though he tries not to overdo it. His inspiration comes from a phrase once used by Sunderland’s Sun FM radio station: “Remember, this is more than a quiz, it’s an education.” Geoff enjoys finding facts that make people stop and think, “I never knew that.” He describes himself as knowing “Everything about Nothing and Nothing about Everything,” with a head full of mostly useless information gathered through years of curiosity and observation. Geoff also helps Dave with questions for the popular Skippers quiz after being approached through Lou at The GA Advertiser. While Geoff writes around 120 questions a year, he admires Dave’s dedication in producing at least 40 new questions every week, describing his own contribution as “a drop in the ocean.” Away from quizzes, Geoff has played an important role in the local running community. Running has been part of his life since childhood and in 1981 he completed his first half marathon at the inaugural Great North Run, joining more than 12,000 runners from Newcastle to South Shields. Although he competed in the race many times, he eventually preferred the Santa Pola Half Marathon because of its relaxed atmosphere, flat coastal route, sunshine and enthusiastic support from spectators. Seeing athletic clubs proudly competing together inspired Geoff to create something similar for Gran Alacant, where many runners and cyclists already trained locally. That idea led to the formation of the GA Running Club, sponsored by GA Homefinders with support from The GA Advertiser. The club quickly attracted interest, with members travelling together to races including the Benidorm 10k and half marathon.

Like many organisations, the club was disrupted by Covid. During lockdowns, members stayed connected through online fitness challenges, but after restrictions ended it became harder to organise regular meet-ups as many members only spent part of the year in Spain. Although the club is quieter today, members still stay in touch through WhatsApp and share details of upcoming events. For Geoff, running and cycling remain essential both physically and mentally. He prefers exercising outdoors to using a treadmill and values the freedom exercise provides. During stressful years working at a desk job, running became an important escape and helped clear his mind before the working day. Travel is another of Geoff’s passions, particularly Asia. India, especially Bombay, remains one of his favourite destinations despite the overwhelming noise, smells and poverty visitors often encounter first. Geoff recalls being advised to “look beyond this and you will see the real India,” advice he found completely true. He also has a special affection for Jordan, where he completed a cycling challenge in 1999 from Amman to Aqaba, travelling through mountains and deserts while staying in Bedouin camps. One unforgettable highlight was visiting Petra’s famous Treasury, Al Khazneh. Despite his love of travel, Geoff remains passionate about Gran Alacant and its future. He believes residents should have a stronger voice in local decision-making and would like to see more thoughtful planning and development from Santa Pola council.

The Treasure We Thought Would Always Be There Did you know that, less than an hour from Gran Alacant, we had one of the most important prehistoric treasures in Europe? And if you did know, had you actually been to see it? There is something rather human about living close to extraordinary things. We tell ourselves we will visit one day. The castle, the museum, that archaeological site just down the road. It has been there for hundreds - sometimes thousands - of years, so there is no particular hurry.Until suddenly, there is. On 27 August, shortly before dawn, masked thieves broke into the Museo de Villena (MUVI) and in a matter of minutes stole most of the famous Treasure of Villena. They entered through a window and escaped in two vehicles before the police could reach the museum. The alarm was raised at 5.23am. The robbery itself reportedly took around four minutes. Four minutes to remove something that had survived for more than 3,000 years. For us, as Juan comes from Villena, this story feels particularly personal. The Treasure was never simply something displayed in a glass case. Villeneros grew up with it. If friends or family visited the town, sooner or later you took them to see El Tesoro. You told them how important it was. You told them how it had been discovered. And you mentioned, with considerable local pride, the man whose name became inseparable from it: archaeologist José María Soler. The story itself is wonderful. In 1963, local builder Francisco García Arnedo found a strange metal object amongst earth removed from the Rambla del Panadero. At first, nobody realised what it was. Eventually a jeweller recognised that it was gold, and

the discovery reached José María Soler. His investigations led back to the site and, on 1 December 1963, to an extraordinary cache buried inside a ceramic vessel. Nearly ten kilos of remarkably pure gold, together with silver, iron and amber: bowls, bottles, bracelets and ornaments dating from the Bronze Age. It is regarded as Spain´s most important Bronze Age gold collection and one of the most significant in Europe. Its financial value is considerable - the value of the gold simply as metal at around €1.5–€1.7 million - but that almost misses the point. Archaeologically, historically and emotionally, its value cannot really be calculated. And there is another extraordinary detail. Two objects in the collection were made using meteoritic iron - metal that had quite literally fallen from the sky. In a strange twist of fate, the thieves left behind the iron bracelet, apparently overlooking one of the most scientifically fascinating objects in the entire collection. The smaller Tesorillo del Cabezo Redondo, another remarkable collection of 35 gold objects discovered in Villena in the same remarkable year of 1963, was also untouched.

The MUVI is currently closed while the investigation continues. But when it reopens, there will still be an enormous amount worth seeing - including those surviving pieces, the Tesorillo and the museum´s collections telling the history of Villena and the Alto Vinalopó. There is also an exact replica of the Treasure, produced by specialists from Spain´s National Archaeological Museum; the replica pieces are gold-plated rather than solid gold. Perhaps that replica now has a new purpose. Before, it showed us what the Treasure looked like. Now it may also tell the story of something found by chance, recognised, studied, protected and treasured by a town for more than sixty years - and then, in four minutes, taken away. Sadly, Villena is not alone. Museums across Europe are experiencing a disturbing wave of robberies. Europol recently warned that thieves are increasingly targeting gold, jewellery and precious objects because they can be dismantled or melted down. In recent months museums in France, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Spain have all been targeted. So perhaps the lesson is bigger than the Treasure of Villena. We are all temporary custodians of the places we call home. A prehistoric treasure. An old building. A castle. A woodland. A coastline. A traditional landscape. None belongs only to us. We inherit them from people who came before us and, for a relatively short time, they are placed in our hands. Our responsibility is to pass them on. Sometimes loss is unavoidable and beyond our control. But as a society we can undoubtedly do more to recognise what is valuable, protect it and - importantly appreciate it while it is still here. We very much hope that one day the real Treasure of Villena will come home. And perhaps, when the MUVI opens its doors again, that is exactly the moment we should go and visit. Because “one day” isn´t always guaranteed. Our thanks to our friend and trusted local guide Ángel for the photographs accompanying this month’s Home Turf. Ángel specialises in guided visits throughout the Alto Vinalopó, particularly Villena. If you’d like to discover the area with him, get in touch and we’ll be delighted to put you in contact.

require massive antennas to transmit efficiently. The structure itself acts as a mast radiator, supported by a web of steel cables anchored into the surrounding landscape. Without this height and design, the signals would not travel effectively across long distances or penetrate seawater.

The Hidden Giant of Alicante:

The result is a structure so large that it can be seen from many kilometres away across land and sea - yet it was never designed to be noticed.

Europe’s Tallest Structure Few People Know About

On the quiet dunes of Guardamar del Segura, in Alicante province, stands one of the most extraordinary yet little-known structures in Europe: the Torreta de Guardamar, also known as the Torre de los Americanos. Rising to around 370–380 metres, it is widely considered the tallest structure in the European Union, yet it remains completely hidden from public life.

More than its visible height Depending on how it is measured, the tower reaches around 370–380 metres above ground level, but if the terrain and underground elements are included, its total reach is even greater. This places it above the Eiffel Tower in height, making it one of the most remarkable but least recognised engineering structures in Europe.

Unlike monuments built for tourism, this immense tower is not accessible to visitors. It is a high-security military communications facility, currently operated by the Spanish Navy and guarded due to its strategic importance.

A strategic landmark in disguise Despite its record-breaking size, the Torreta de Guardamar is not a tourist attraction. It sits within a restricted military zone surrounded by pine forests and dunes near the Mediterranean coast.

Built during the Cold War The tower was constructed in 1962 by the United States Navy, at the height of the Cold War, as part of defence cooperation agreements between Spain and the US. It later passed into Spanish control, but its original purpose remains the same: strategic naval communications.

From a distance, it appears almost delicate - a thin lattice of metal stretching into the sky, held by cables that disappear into the landscape. Yet its function is global in scale, playing a role in naval communications far beyond Spain.

Its unofficial name, “Torre de Americanos,” still reflects its origins.

los

A tower that communicates with submarines underwater The Torreta de Guardamar is not a conventional broadcasting mast. It is a very low frequency (VLF) transmission antenna, designed for one very specific mission: communicating with submarines while they are fully submerged. This is crucial for modern naval operations, because submarines do not need to surface to receive orders. The system allows command centres to send instructions directly through seawater at depths of up to roughly 200 metres. Why it has to be so tall One of the most surprising facts is that the tower’s extreme height is not for visibility or engineering ambition, but physics. VLF radio waves are extremely long and

From American control to Spanish Navy use After its construction, the site was initially operated by the US Navy. It was later transferred to Spanish control and is now integrated into Spain’s naval communication network, supporting operations linked to submarines based in Cartagena and Mediterranean waters. Today, it remains active 24 hours a day, transmitting coded messages that are essential for underwater fleet coordination. A hidden world record in plain sight Although millions of people travel through Alicante every year, very few realise that one of the tallest structures in the world stands just inland from the coast. It is not a monument, not a skyline attraction, and not part of any tourist map - yet it is one of the most powerful communication structures in Europe. Hidden in plain sight, the Torreta de Guardamar remains one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating and secretive engineering landmarks.

WATCH YOUR (DOG) STEP

A recent scientific research has proven steps in dogs with incoming dementia becomes significantly shorter, specially in fore limbs. And this sign is much more specific than, for example, the age, for detecting what is called "cognitive dysfunction syndrome" at its early stages. This phenomenon, which has also been detected in humans suffering from senile dementia (Alzheimer or similar diseases), seems to be caused by some damage at brain frontal cortex and cerebellum, which is the organ that controls the balance (cats cerebellum is much bigger and developed than in most other species, and this is the reason why they "turn around and always fall on their feet"). For the research they used about 88 old dogs, males and females, crossbreed and pure breed, and all of them were supossed to have lived longer than 75% of the expectance of life according to their breeds and sizes. The average age was 12.5 years. They were thoroughly studied (physical, neurological and sensory tests) at the lab for 3 days every 6 months, and at

the same time, the owners had to fill in a questionnaire, including Canine Dementia Scale (CADES), and Brief Pain Inventory, for detecting any kind of chronic pain. One of the tests consists on a 5 meter walk on the lead, not receiving any kind of stimulation. The results were the dogs that ended up developing dementia, had their front legs steps about 1.5% shorter every 10 points increasing at CADES). Why the front legs? Because dogs, when walking, use back legs just for "traction", while front ones are also used for "braking" and "turning", which implies a bigger number of neuronal circuits so they can fail more easily. Of course, dementia is not the only condition that may shorten the steps: chronic joint and spine problems may produce the same effect, so when the owner detects this condition is time to see the Vet, because whatever the problem is (dementia, arthritis or spine problems), deserves some professional attention in order to establish a diagnosis, a prognosis and a treatment.

GA MENS WALKING FOOTBALL

Community , GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL SAD NEWS

The ladies walking football was originally set up by Julie Broderick. It was a noble idea but due to various circumstances it has now come to an inevitable end. Reasons for this include lack of permanent members and a change in availability with the venue. The increase in pupils at the temporary school means they require the facilities more. And the education of the children is a priority and rightly so. So to all the ladies and coaches who turned up over the years a big thank you to you all. Also thanks to our sponsors GA Homefinders. We had some really fun times and it was a pleasure to be part of it. Thanks again, Jim Fraser

Join us for a fun workout! MEN'S SESSION Every Wednesday at 10am WHERE: EL MONSA SPORTS CENTRE, SANTA POLA

Hello all. Thank you to all who came along to our first session on the 2nd September. Alas, this was also our last session at the sports centre in Gran Alacant for the foreseeable future. The outdoor pitch at the sports centre opened to the public in August 2023 but very soon afterwards, restrictions were placed on its use by the public when the temporary school was opened in September 2023. The indoor space and both the outdoor hard court and football pitch were handed over to the school. We were able to use the pitch at times when no classes were taking place. However, now that the school has become so big we no longer have times that suit. It is with some disappointment that after more than a decade of walking football in Gran Alacant, we now have no facility to continue in Gran Alacant. It is believed that the situation is temporary with the permanent school still supposed to be completed by the end of 2027. We shall see. However, we have been able to secure an outdoor astroturf football 8s pitch at the Monsa facility in Santa Pola so that the Gran Alacant Walking Football group can continue. We will continue to play on Wednesdays with a start time of 10.00am. Please arrive around 15 minutes earlier to allow teams to be picked. The cost will continue to be 1 euro per session. Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below). Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF), there is the opportunity to play most weekdays in Santa Pola.

GEOFF'S

Hi, my name is Geoff and I have been asked by Lou to challenge you every month with a few teasers. I hope you enjoy them. I first came to GA in 2001 and bought my house in 2002 where I have been a regular visitor ever since. You will see me at the quizzes, or out and about, running or cycling. If you see me come and say hi, or, just give me a cheery hello. I am also a big lover of live music and try to see as many live acts as I can.
