Q: Ongoing Concerns Regarding Building Waste and Dog Mess

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring up a couple of ongoing issues that were mentioned in the March issue, which still remain unresolved. Despite residents raising concerns multiple times, it seems that little has been done to address these matters.
A few years ago, building waste was dumped by the bins outside Med 111 along Carabassi. The waste remained there for almost a year, even though residents repeatedly reported it. Shortly after it was cleared, more waste appeared in the same area, even though there were no renovations happening at Med 111 at that time. I suspect that outside builders may be using this spot as an unofficial dumping ground.
Additionally, as Jans noted, there continues to be an issue with dog mess along Carabassi.
To avoid stepping in it, we now walk in the road to reach the beach or nearby bars. It's often in the same spots, which leads me to believe it's the same dogs, owned by irresponsible individuals who clearly do not care, despite the numerous reminders published in local papers and magazines. Families with pushchairs are particularly affected by this.
I’d like to suggest the installation of CCTV cameras by the Carabassi roundabout, overlooking the bins and pavements leading toward Med 111. This could potentially deter both the illegal dumping and the dog mess problem.

Q: Request for Replanting of Trees and Enhanced Green Spaces in Gran Alacant
Hi Lou,
I hope you're doing well. I was pleased to read about the awarding of the contract to Actúa Servicios y Medio Ambiente for the maintenance of the parks and green spaces in Santa Pola, including Gran Alacant. I’d like to request that, as part of this contract, the replanting of the trees that have died and were removed from the streets of Gran Alacant be included in their scope of work. I’ve attached some pictures to illustrate the areas that need attention, though these do not cover all the locations in need of improvement.
Gran Alacant would benefit greatly from more trees, larger flower planters, and public seating. These additions would not only enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal but also create a more welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.

Issue Regarding Lack of Mobile Phone Signal in Lower GA
Dear Lou,
I hope you're doing well. I am writing to highlight an ongoing issue that affects us in Novamar 6, Lower GA. Unfortunately, we have no access to mobile phone signal in this area, which makes everyday tasks incredibly difficult. For example, many banks require a texted access code for payments, which we obviously cannot receive. This also prevents us from contacting anyone unless they are on WiFi-enabled platforms like WhatsApp, but most legal and banking services do not support this form of communication.
When the WiFi goes down, we are left with no means of contact at all. While we did install a landline, it is still reliant on WiFi, rendering it useless if the connection fails. I recently opened a new bank account, and I had to stand outside with the bank employee just to complete the transaction. This raises serious security concerns about the process.
This issue extends beyond Novamar; it affects the entire area of GA. Unfortunately, Oscar seems to have dismissed the problem, saying it is up to the phone companies. In the UK, when a new mast is installed, mobile companies are required to subscribe to it, ensuring coverage.
This is not merely a matter of convenience - it's a safety concern, especially for elderly or disabled residents who rely on mobile access for emergencies. I would greatly appreciate a more constructive response from our representatives, rather than the standard suggestion to "contact your mobile companies."
Despite continued construction in the area, the fundamental communication infrastructure is inadequate, unsafe, and unfit for purpose.

The Town Hall commissions two projects to improve traffic in GRAN ALACANT
The necessary acceleration lane to N-332 towards Alicante: This project aims to facilitate the connection from the residential area to the N-332 road towards Alicante. It requires the relevant authorization from the Ministry.
A new roundabout between Avenida de Escandinavia and Calle Monte de Santa Pola:
This will connect Avenida de Escandinavia with Calle Monte de Santa Pola, located just in front of the municipal building.
The local government board has approved commissioning the drafting of two important projects aimed at improving traffic flow in Gran Alacant. The first of these aims to facilitate the connection from the residential area to the national road N-332 towards Alicante.
It is worth recalling that Mayor Loreto Serrano visited the Roads Unit in Alicante
just a month ago, once again requesting that the link project near the old Rocas Blancas hotel be resumed. This includes the integration from Gran Alacant, the connection to Playa Lisa, and the doubling of one of the area's most accident-prone black spots. Previously, all four municipal groups had unanimously approved a motion in the council demanding this long-standing request.
Given the repeated lack of response from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, which oversees the national roads, the Town Hall of Santa Pola has decided to commission the drafting of the project for the new acceleration lane from Gran Alacant, with the aim of taking responsibility for its construction, always with the Ministry's consent.
Additionally, the government board has also approved hiring the drafting of a project for a
new roundabout that will connect Avenida de Escandinavia with Calle Monte de Santa Pola, directly in front of the municipal building.
The opening of the new El Faro School in Gran Alacant in January, as well as the future construction of a medical center on an adjacent plot, necessitates the reorganization of traffic to improve flow in this area, especially during peak times at the beginning and end of school hours.
Spring Cleaning in Gran Alacant
Last month, Santa Pola Council shared updates on routine cleaning and maintenance work carried out across Gran Alacant. Public gardens and green spaces were cleared and pruned to improve their overall condition, with additional work including weed control and grass cutting.

First Commercial Space Set to Open by Summer’s End
Arenales del Sol in Elche is counting down
to the opening of its first commercial space, which will feature a much-needed supermarket. For years, residents and tourists have had to travel several kilometers for basic shopping, as the district is mostly served by restaurants and a few small grocery stores that fail to meet the area’s needs. Many have been forced to drive to Santa Pola or Gran Alacant for larger shopping trips.
As confirmed by Mayor Pablo Ruz, significant progress has been made on the development of a commercial area between Bahía Street and Costa Blanca Avenue. The new space, which is expected to be fully operational by the end of summer or the last quarter of the year, will provide a convenient shopping option for locals and visitors.

Our first visiting team of the year was a large one, forty two members from Monifieth. As there was some many players we played two lots of ten ends so everyone could have a game. After the game we enjoyed lunch and drinks at the Belfry. Thanks to Cindy for organising the competition.
CHICKEN RUN
Sunday 29th March
The monthly chicken run was well attended so all the rinks were used. The chickens were won by Charlotte with thirty two shots and Steve Hindle with twenty nine shots. Margaret O’Doyle and Ian Crawford won the eggs. Thank you to Phil and Janet Goble who donated the chickens As usual Ian and Julia Hamilton donated the the eggs with the help of the chickens of coarse. Gina Hindle won the football card with Burnley. Thank you to Howie, Sue and Joan for organising another sucsessful competition.
EASTER COMPETITION
Sunday 5th April
Twenty four members took part in the competition, as requested by Cindy everyone wore bright colours for spring. We played eighteen ends consisting of playing different teams on different rinks.
After the competition we enjoyed a buffet and drinks at the club. The winners were Sheila Roberts, David March, Phil Goble runners up Colin Bedford, Charlotte Tranberg, Joan Harding. After the presentation the raffle was drawn, there were numerous prizes.
Janet Leonard and Joan Harding won the main prize Hampers. Thank you to Cindy for organising the competition, Viv, Janet and Debbie for doing the buffet and Heidi for making the two lovely hampers.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Monte Mar Bowls Club has been a valued part of the Gran Alacant community for more than two decades, providing not only sporting facilities but also an important social space for residents. For manyparticularly older members - it has offered opportunities to stay active, enjoy the outdoors and maintain strong social connections.
The club is currently facing an uncertain future following reported changes in property ownership. It is understood that the site may have changed hands in 2021 and again in 2024. During this period, the club continued to operate under its existing arrangements with the former owners.
The new owners have recently taken steps to restrict access to the premises, including securing the site and limiting entry. This has resulted in the suspension of club activities and has understandably caused concern among members and the wider community.
Monte Mar Bowls Club has long been more than a sports venue; it represents a social hub where friendships are formed and community ties are strengthened. The temporary loss of access has had a noticeable impact, particularly among long-standing members.
The club has now sought legal advice and is reviewing its position with the aim of resolving the situation constructively. At the same time, members have expressed a desire for clarity regarding the future of the site, especially in light of previous expectations with local authorities that it would remain dedicated to sporting use.
Monte Mar Bowls Club remains committed to its members and to the community it has served for over 20 years. Further updates will be shared as the situation develops.

GA CLEANUP April Meetup
We were thrilled to welcome a wonderful mix of new and returning volunteers to this month’s GA Cleanup at Masa Square in Gran Alacant.
Our dedicated team spread out near the square and towards the roundabout, collecting an impressive amount of litter in just one hour! A heartfelt thank you to all our amazing volunteers for your time, energy, and community spirit!

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

MEET GLYN POWELL
The Treasurer, Money man, looking after the finances of our branch. Spending approximately 2 hours a week at his desk making the figures work. Audit times he spends a considerable time more particularly in October & November which is Poppy Appeal time. In the time I have been a committee member I’m happy to say that this branch is financially healthy. Unlike his computer, but that’s another story.
At 15 Glyn joined the British Army, he was sent to school within the forces to master various military skills. He always found maths easy, a rare talent I’d say, enjoying figures, he later became a Service Funds Accountant.
7 years ago, he decided after many years of visiting his home in La Marina to retire. He looked at various charities helping and assisting our veterans here in Spain. This area of expertise was known to Glyn as previously in the UK he was a SAAFA case worker. He had established links with the Royal British Legion (RBL), in his words, when referring to the Charity, it was a worthwhile cause and one that appealed. Incidentally, this is an area in which we are looking for volunteers currently, so if you’re thinking of sparing a little time a month, we would be only too pleased to hear from you. If you are ever in La Marina, you’ll often find Glyn at breakfast gatherings with 30 or more veterans. These gatherings are held first Wednesday morning of every month 9.30 for 10 at La Estacion restaurant and bar. Glyn has been with the RBL seven years in total and after completing training for the accounts system 5 years ago Glyn became our treasurer.
Random question for him, if he were King for the day, His answer - well, he would want much more help and assistance towards all veterans...!

A Century of Courage
Paul Kane had the honour of presenting a 101 year old WW2 veteran a certificate of appreciation from RBL Spain District North. Members of the Royal British Legion had the pleasure of celebrating Joyce’s 101 birthday. Joyce is a WW2 veteran & continues to live life with joy & energy, her big smile reflects her kind heart & strong spirit.
Joyce Lee , who was then Goodall , was born in West Yorkshire in 1924 she is the daughter of Sally & Alfred Goodall. At the age of 16yrs old Joyce lied about her age to join the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) after completing her training she was posted to 524th heavy mixed anti-aircraft battery part of the 152 mixed (heavy) anti aircraft regiment.
Joyce was then promoted to Lance Corporal. Joyce’s military service was officially rated as exemplary; she was awarded the defence medal & war medal 1939/1945. She served at Spurn point & stone creek between Hull & Spurn Head, both of these sites played a key role in defending Britain during the war, these locations were part of a major anti-aircraft gun defence operation & was staffed by both men & women. Joyce worked there as a radar operator alongside other ATS members. During the war Joyce met her husband & together raised 4 children, living now for the past 11yrs in Spain with her daughter Sue still continuing to enjoy life with the same strength & cheer that she showed in her youth.

Matt was amazing, gave me advice about the best water heater for my needs, agreed a time he would come to fit it and arrived as agreed . He did an impeccable job and I am really pleased.
Gary was amazing. He came over on a weekend as I had no lighting in the flat as an emergency call out which I was so grateful for and then came back the week after to ensure it was a more definitive fix . Acts of Kindness Supports Finca la Castellana Charity
A generous group of individuals from the Gran Alacant community recently came together to raise €440 for the charity, Finca la Castellana, in a heartwarming show of support for abandoned, illtreated, and abused animals. Along with monetary donations, a variety of food donations were collected for the animals under the care of the charity.
The success of the fundraiser was made possible thanks to the incredible support from local businesses, including Quicksave Gran Alacant, Tommy's, and Molly Malone's. These businesses played an essential role in ensuring the event’s success, and their contribution is truly appreciated.
Adding a special personal touch to the fundraiser, Pam Hardy created kindness dolls, which were warmly received and contributed to the event’s unique spirit. The effort and creativity of Pam, along with the generous donations from all involved, highlight the power of community engagement and goodwill.
Finca la Castellana, founded in 2000, began as a family project and has since grown into a registered non-profit charity. The charity rescues and re-homes animals, many of which live out their days on the finca as part of the family. It also works with local authorities on the “Green Mile” project to release dogs from municipal killing stations across the country. The charity’s motto is, “The more money we raise, the more pets we can save.”

REVIVING THE LAND, ONE GLASS AT A TIME
Few things are as characteristic of our region as its vineyards and bodegas. The first things that greets visitors are huge advertising hoardings proudly proclaiming Alicante to be the world’s oldest wine “denomination”; yet a far more interesting story of new winemaking and world leading viniculture is also happening in our historic wine producing landscape. We spent a day at one of the bodegas creating this renaissance in Spanish wine.
Case Balaguer is located in the historic wine country in the Alto Vinalopó valley, in the village of Canyada near Villena. This district is the most important grape growing area of our province and its grapes find their way into some of the most famous brands of wine including Mendoza and Bocopa amongst others. Our visit however was to a small independent vineyard run by a young couple who have committed themselves to combining the most modern methods of production with returning to cultivation of the traditional local grape varieties that
trace their heritage back hundreds of years in our region.
The estate claims to have a continuous wine growing history dating back to at least the 18th century. Today, the estate adheres to strict organic and biodynamic estate management avoiding the use of chemicals and other practices that are normal in large scale wine production.
Our visit was as part of one of the guided tours and wine tasting visits that the estate organises. We visited the vineyards and cellars with the entire wine making process explained by the young enthusiastic couple who own and run the estate. This tour was then complimented by a wine tasting held in the beautiful bodega house. We tried a number of different vintages, red, white and blush, accompanied by tapas including olive oil also produced on the estate.
We have visited other bodegas including the famous Enrique Mendoza winery. What was
especially enjoyable about our day at Casa Balaguer was learning about how new practices are changing the way wine is produced in Spain and especially in our area. The decision to commit to re- adopting the traditional grape varieties from our region is brave in a world where commercial pressures tend towards uniformity and continued use of famous, usually French, grape varieties. The rich historic variety of different grapes and wines produced in Europe has gradually been denuded over the last 100 years by the dominance of French grape types and tastes which became the global standard. The determination to return to growing local Spanish varieties of grape is an important step in restoring the variety and texture of European wine that had been at risk of being lost.
so much agricultural land in both Spain and other countries, the estate had suffered from modern farming practices that had degraded the land and the biodiversity of the estate. By adopting a strict organic and biodynamic programme the estate is successfully restoring the soil health of the very land it occupies. What the last 80 years has taken out of the land is now being gradually put back and generations to come will benefit.
The results of adopting local historic grapes were readily apparent at the tasting; the excellent wines we tasted all had a complexity that one sometimes finds lacking in the products of bulk wine producers. The white wines in particular were a revelation, with tastes and fragrances that were fresh and exciting - well beyond the normal experience that one has grown to expect of white wines. The reds were also wonderful and are a particular passion of the winemakers who are keen to create a new way to enjoy the local tempranillo grape variety.

Our visit also included an opportunity to meet the geese who are the symbol of the estate and business, even featuring on some of the bottle labels; these handsome creatures poked their heads over the wall to inspect us as we assembled to start our tour. The Romans famously used geese as guards to warn of danger; now their descendants stand guard over Casa Balaguer and its brave adventure to restore both our region´s wine traditions and the health of the land itself!

Last month, Andres and the team at Texicana Restaurant on the Carabassi strip hosted our monthly lunch on their sunny terrace. Over 40 ladies joined us for a lovely afternoon, and together we raised more than 100€ for Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer.
Our weekly Coffee Morning continues to be a popular and relaxed way to meet others. This informal get-together takes place at Texicana Restaurant on the Carabassi strip.
The increasingly popular Sunday Strollers meet every Sunday at 09:30 by La Milla for a gentle walk along the Los Arenales
seafront, with a coffee stop along the way. It’s a great way to start the day and enjoy the beautiful coastline.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR: Joe
If you’ve spent any time in Gran Alacant, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Joe, a familiar face with a warm smile, a quick wit and a lifetime of stories behind him.
Originally from Derry in Northern Ireland, Joe left home during the years of the troubles, setting off on a journey that would take him across the UK and eventually to Spain. His first stop was Morecambe, where he lived with his sister and worked along the seafront in an oyster bar, selling cockles and mussels. It was there his friends jokingly nicknamed him “Molly Malone”, a title he still laughs about today.
Joe’s path then led him to Bognor Regis, working at the famous Butlins holiday camp, before heading to the bright lights of London. It was in London where his career really took off.
He began working for Rayne, prestigious shoemakers to the Royal Family, in their Bond Street store. Joe later moved with the company to Harvey Nichols, where he served an impressive list of high-profile clients. Among them were Princess Diana, whom he had the pleasure of serving twice, Shirley Bassey, Laura Ashley and Ava Gardner.
After leaving Rayne, Joe continued his career with Kurt Geiger, working in both the men’s and ladies’ departments at Harrods. There, his list of notable customers grew even longer, including Princess Diana’s father, John Spencer, singer Tom Jones and Imelda Marcos.
In 1998, Joe made the life-changing move to Spain with his partner of 50 years. Settling in Gran Alacant, he quickly became part of the local community. Many residents will remember “Joe’s” fish and chip shop, a popular spot that brought a taste of home to the area. Never one to sit still, Joe has also volunteered with the Easy Horse Care charity shop and taken part in festive pantomimes supporting the MABS Cancer Support Foundation.
Today, Joe continues to give back, working at a local charity shop SATS supporting
dogs, something he says he truly loves.
When asked what he enjoys most about life here, Joe doesn’t hesitate: “The community, the sunshine, and being so close to the beach.” Living in Costa Hispania, he appreciates the relaxed lifestyle and the friendships he’s built over the years.
His advice to anyone thinking of making the move to Spain?
“Get out of your comfort zone and do it. I’ve never regretted a single day living here.”
A man of character, kindness, and countless stories, Joe is truly one of Gran Alacant’s treasures, and proof that sometimes, the biggest adventures begin with a single brave step.

Ministerio de Derechos Sociales, Consumo y Agenda 2030 (Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), has started the process of previous public information for developing the positive list of companion pets species.
This implies Spanish Government will create a list of species we are allowed to have at home. This list will be developed according to scientific, animal welfare, environmental safety and epidemiological criteria. This list is not a Spanish invention, since other EU countries such as France and the Netherlands have already developed their own lists. These lists are also a valuable tool for controlling illegal wildlife traffic.
So, the aim of this Real Decreto would be ensuring animal rights and welfare protection, for protecting environmental safety, health and biodiversity, and also for easing companion pets possession control.
The positive list will include mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and invertebrates. This list will allow public access and will be permanently updated, and apart from the species list itself, will inform of duties and prohibitions for owners about identification, Veterinary controls, lodging conditions, training courses, etc.
So, what will happen with those species not included at the positive list which won’t be considered as companion pets any longer? Despite the omnipresent junk at the Internet and media, no, the “evil Government” will not break into your home and confiscate them. And, of course, once again forget about fake news: budgies, hamsters, Guinea pigs, etc, will NEVER appear at the list. Except in extreme cases such as apes or Vietnamese pigs (whose possession is already forbidden), the owner can apply for an “exceptional authorisation”. All the owner has to do is to prove the animal is at home BEFORE the date the positive list appears, just showing a purchasing bill, a Veterinary certificate, or any other document from authorities. The document must include a proper identification number of the individual. From that moment, you can keep the animal at home, but you cannot sell, give or make it breed.
The Real Decreto is still in previous public communication period, and it probably will take several months to be approved. Meanwhile we recommend to ask your Vet for some advice if you have a pet different from dog, cat or ferret. But we can tell you in advance that in 99.99% of cases, the answer will be “nothing to worry about”.

A NEW CHAPTER
Women’s Walking Football in Gran Alacant continues to grow, with new projects and fresh energy ahead. We are excited to share that, due to strong interest and commitment, the sessions will continue under the watchful eye of coach Jim Fraser, with support from GA Homefinders.
The focus of the sessions moving forward will be on fun and fitness. These sessions are open to everyone in Gran Alacant, whether you are a resident or just visiting for a holiday. Participants are encouraged to join in, have fun, and enjoy the experience without taking themselves too seriously, followed by a casual session debrief at the El Tio Chato cafeteria.
Sessions take place on Thursdays at the Astroturf pitch at the sports centre in Gran Alacant.

Hello all! The Gran Alacant Walking Football group continues to enjoy good numbers with a growing mix of nationalities. It is always great to see new people come along. So if you are thinking about, just come along. We will be having our quarterly social meet (along with the women´s group) on Tuesday 5th May at 1pm so if you haven´t put your name down as yet, then please get in touch. All players and partners are welcome.
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! We play each Wednesday at 12 noon on the astroturf at the Polideportivo (Sports Centre) in Gran Alacant. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have a multinational membership where the common language is... football. Ages range from early fifties to over 70. If you want to come along, please arrive around 11.50am to allow for teams to be arranged but be mindful of students who may still be around. The facility now closes at 1pm so we need to be out of the showers quickly!

Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.
