Q: Public Area Improvements in GA

During my visit to GA last week, I was quite shocked by how many areas still need attention. The new company tasked with improving the public spaces has a lot of work ahead of them if they're to make a real difference.
If you could kindly pass along the attached picture, I’d really appreciate it.
GA has so much potential, but it seems there’s little appetite for improvement at the moment. I live in hope!

Q: Concrete Blocks
Hi Lou
We live in Monte y Mar opposite the car parking area which was used by the school. Now the portacabins have been removed the car park is not used as much. In the entrance are 4 large concrete blocks which have now been moved to one side. This is now a play area for children, climbing on them and smashing stones from the top on to the road, this is an accident waiting to happen.
Could you please advise the Councillor of this and ask if now the car park is not used so much that they can be removed.

BUS PETITION UPDATE -
Many of you will remember that we collected signatures both on paper and on-line last summer in order to demonstrate to our Council and Vectalia that the Residents & Visitors of Gran Alacant need a much improved Urbano Bus Service (No.15). With your support, and that of many local businesses in Gran Alacant, we collected over 2,200 signatures and more than 200 online comments.
It has been difficult to get our Councillors to engage with us but now we have been joined by Susanna from Cuenca lawyers and she is helping us with our plan to put our demands directly to the Provincial transport ministry and Vectalia.
Word of our efforts is getting out and on 2nd May Vectalia published a slightly improved timetable for the No.15 Urbano Circular bus. It now has 3 additional times in the late afternoon: 5pm, 5.45pm & 6.30pm on Monday - Saturday.
The new timetable is published in this Magazine.
We are continuing our efforts to improve the service as it is not even back to the pre-pandemic levels of service and the Residents, Businesses & Visitors of Gran Alacant have the right to a public transport system that is fit for purpose.

Hi guys,
I have attached a photo of the junction between Av. Canarias (old market street) and C. Rio Tajo.
Av. Canarias is a one way street. However we continually see vehicles coming up to this junction and turning right, the wrong way. Also the pedestrian crossing is ignored by drivers.
The signage is poor and considering we have many school kids using the bus in this area, this junction needs to be made safer.
I would appreciate it if you could bring this to the councillors' attention.

GRAN ALACANT ENHANCES YEAR-ROUND PEST CONTROL
The municipality has launched an expanded pest control program for 2026, focusing on prevention and regular interventions. The initiative targets common pests like mosquitoes, rats, and cockroaches, aiming to reduce their impact on residents and local businesses.
Key actions include bi-weekly treatments for the invasive tiger mosquito in public areas, drains, and natural zones. Additional efforts will focus on controlling the processionary caterpillar and other pests that threaten public health and safety. The program also offers guidance for private property owners on managing pest issues at the local level.
The local Health Department remains committed to keeping Gran Alacant pest-free throughout the year, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all. Residents are encouraged to participate by maintaining their properties and reporting pest sightings to the authorities.
SANTA POLA MOVES TO PROTECT NATURAL HERITAGE AND SUPPORT LOCAL SERVICES
In a unanimous decision at April’s plenary session, Santa Pola’s council urged the Valencian Government to officially declare the Sierra and Cabo de Santa Pola a municipal natural site- a process pending for nearly a decade.
The council also approved six new adapted taxi licenses, expanding mobility options for residents. Additionally, members called for urgent measures to offset rising diesel costs affecting local farmers and fishermen, highlighting the town’s commitment to both environmental preservation and economic support for its community.
SANTA POLA SHINES WITH BLUE FLAG HONORS IN 2026
Santa Pola has once again proven its commitment to environmental excellence, earning recognition in the 2026 Blue Flag program. The city now boasts five Blue Flag beaches: Tamarit, Calas del Este, Calas de Santiago Bernabeu, La Ermita, and Varadero, highlighting both natural beauty and sustainable management.
Beyond the beaches, the Museo del Mar, CIMAR, and Museo de la Sal have been recognized as Blue Centers, dedicated to
promoting environmental awareness and celebrating local ecosystems. The Club Náutico Santa Pola also proudly adds a Blue Flag for marinas to its accolades.
The crowning achievement this year is a Special Mention for Environmental Education, awarded to Santa Pola for its outstanding educational initiatives. It stands out as the only mainland municipality in Spain to receive this honor, reflecting the city’s dedication to inspiring residents and visitors alike to care for the environment.
With these distinctions, Santa Pola continues to lead as a model of sustainable tourism, blending pristine beaches, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship.
ELCHE RESIDENTS PUSH BACK ON CONTROVERSIAL ARENALES TRAFFIC PLAN
The streets of Arenales are buzzing - not with cars, but with frustration. Months after a major traffic reorganization, residents and businesses are voicing complaints over the one-way system on San Bartolomé de Tirajana Avenue.
Locals say it forces long detours, hampers shop visibility, and complicates emergency access. In response, Elche’s PP-Vox coalition is considering a partial reversal, restoring two-way traffic on a key section to ease congestion toward Santa Pola.
City officials warn a full rollback is unlikely due to operational challenges, but councilor Pedro José Sáez acknowledges residents’ frustration and promises a review after the summer.
Adding to concerns is the dismissal of local representative Alejandro García Raduán, leaving the district without a clear voice at City Hall.

May Meetup
This month, our lovely team of volunteers met at the Commercial Centre to carry out a litter clean-up in the surrounding area.
In just one hour, we collected an incredible amount of rubbish - a great reminder of the positive impact a small group can make when working together. A huge thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for giving their time and energy to help keep our community looking its best.
As the weather is still manageable, we will be holding one final GA Cleanup session on 11th June before taking a break from the summer heat. We’ll be back in the autumn to continue our efforts helping Gran Alacant looking its best!

Can you give us a little background to you and your company?
SJC Financial Planning was established in 2010. We are a family-run, FCAregulated brokerage specialising in expert independent mortgage and equity release advice.
We pride ourselves on the bespoke and personal service we provide to our clients, as well as the long-standing relationships we have built over many years. It is always lovely when we begin dealing with the sons and daughters of existing clients — who were children when we first worked with their parents — although that probably means we are getting older! It is very much a genuine family business.
What inspired you to focus on helping UK homeowners unlock property value specifically for life in Spain?
Having visited Alicante recently and spent time with friends in Gran Alacant, we saw first-hand that many UK nationals are looking to purchase property in Spain or raise capital against property they already own in either the UK or Spain. This may be for home improvements, property purchases, or a variety of other reasons.
There did not appear to be many similar services available locally, and we felt that UK nationals spending time in the area could really benefit from the specialist service we provide.
Many people dream of moving to Spain. What are the biggest financial misconceptions you see when they try to make that dream a reality?
Many people are unaware that they can use property owned in the UK to raise capital to help finance a property purchase in Spain.
While there are now restrictions around how long UK nationals can stay in Spain throughout the year, many people still enjoy splitting their time between the two countries and making the most of both lifestyles.
How does releasing equity from a UK property differ from taking out a traditional mortgage or loan?
There is no significant difference in the mortgage process when raising capital to purchase a property in Spain. Lenders are generally quite flexible and are often happy to lend for the purpose of purchasing an additional property, whether in the UK or abroad.
The process is usually quicker and more cost-effective when raising capital in the UK, as the Spanish purchase effectively becomes a cash sale rather than requiring

borrowing through a Spanish bank.
What types of clients typically come to you — are they mostly retirees, investors, or families seeking a lifestyle change?
As we are still based in the UK, we work with a broad cross-section of clients, ranging from first-time buyers to older homeowners considering equity release.
As we spend more time in Spain, we are increasingly seeing clients looking to purchase property in areas such as Gran Alacant. These tend to be families wanting to enjoy more time in the sun, as well as recently retired clients looking to make the most of their retirement lifestyle.
What are the key risks or considerations people should understand before accessing capital from their home?
Taking out any mortgage — particularly equity release — is a major financial decision and is not suitable for everyone. We have a very thorough advice process and always encourage family discussions, often involving other family members where appropriate.
As an FCA-regulated firm, we are fully qualified in all aspects of the financial services we provide, and we take compliance extremely seriously. We also have a strong compliance background, having previously worked as a Senior Associate for the FCA before establishing SJC Financial Planning.
How has the demand for relocating or investing in Spain changed in recent years, especially post-pandemic?
Brexit and Covid have undoubtedly reduced the number of UK nationals buying property in Spain, often due to restrictions on the amount of time they can spend in the country.
However, there are still many people with property in the UK who are looking to buy their dream home in Spain and spend more time there — especially during the winter months when the weather in the UK can be particularly cold.
As a family-run business, how do your values shape the way you work with clients compared to larger financial institutions?
We pride ourselves on offering a highquality, personal service and are very “old school” in our approach. We will always make time for our clients and are happy to meet or speak with them at times that suit their schedules, which is often during evenings or weekends.
There is now a huge amount of information available online, and many large financial institutions operate almost entirely digitally. However, we passionately believe there is still a very important place for genuine conversations and personalised guidance to ensure every client receives the most suitable advice for their circumstances.

On Saturday the 2nd of May we held our annual “Walk for Life” event with a record turn out of walkers, both two-legged and four-legged and with a welcome return from Adam’s dinosaur.
Adam can usually be found at Adam’s Car Parking at Alicante airport. As always, we were well supported by the lovely people of Gran Alacant, thanks to the encouragement from our friends at Quicksave, Gran Alacant. Although we were threatened with rain, the day stayed dry and a little cooler than usual, making for a more comfortable walk.
So far, we have raised 3,240 euros although that is expected to increase as the sponsor money comes in.
With 1 in 2 of us now forecast to get cancer, it is ever more vital that we continue to raise the much-needed funds so that we can continue to support those families living with this monstrous disease. All of us at Bruised but not Broken would like to say a massive and heartfelt thank you to all of you who took part and to those who sponsored the walkers, for without your loyal support we could not continue our work.

As one drives along the coast road just south of Santa Pola one cannot miss one of the most famous sights of Spain - an Osborne bull. The distinctive black silhouette of an Iberian fighting bull standing proud against the sky is one of the icons of Spain. Such is its potency as a national symbol that it has featured in works of art, most famously in the 1992 movie Jamón Jamón starring a young Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. It is also routinely used on the covers of guidebooks to the country.
The bull outside Santa Pola is one of 92 scattered throughout Spain, almost always to be found alongside national main roads and usually situated on a hillside or ridge. Originally made of painted wood but now of sheet metal to withstand the harsh Iberian climate these bulls are 14 metres high and considered so important that they

are legally protected as part of the heritage of the country. As such they will now remain part of the Spanish landscape alongside the windmills and castles that are other iconic symbols of Spain.
A casual visitor to Spain may well wonder how these striking items came to find their way into the Spanish landscape. How does a country come to decide to decorate itself with these powerful but rather strange motifs of national identity? The graphic power of these majestic silhouettes and their association with Spain is so strong that it is impossible to imagine that anything less than a public government arts or propaganda policy could have led to their creation and insertion into the land and mentality of Spain and Spaniards.
The truth is both somewhat pedestrian and more wonderful: The bulls were not some crazy propaganda programme by the regime of dictator Franco nor were they a huge public art project by one of
Spain’s genius artists. In fact, as some readers will know, the bulls started life as simple advertisements for booze. In the early 1950s the Osborne company needed to brand its “Brandy de Jerez” liquor and commissioned Manolo Prieto to design a branding to be used for labels and crucially also as roadside advertising. Originally only 4 metres high, made of wood and bearing lettering “Veterano Osborne” (Osborne Veteran) the signs were simple roadside advertising aimed at the increasing numbers of people driving around Spain in motor cars and buses.
Over time, the signs were replaced in metal and grew in size to accommodate road safety laws that pushed distracting advertising further away from roadsides. In the 1980s a total ban on roadside advertising was imposed, partly to address Spain’s then appallingly poor road safety situation; this ban meant that the bulls lost their lettering and became the simple black silhouettes we know today.
By the 1990s the bulls had become such a fixture of Spain that attempts to remove them were thwarted by both the national parliament and law courts with the bulls becoming a protected cultural artifact. Their journey from humble wooden advertisements for mass produced brandy to becoming part of the cultural patrimony of the country was complete.
Symbols have power and can attract controversy. The fighting bull is not an uncomplicated symbol of Spain. Bull fighting has strong associations with Castilian Spain and also with older more traditional social attitudes including towards animals and their use and abuse. Accordingly, the Osborne bulls are not appreciated by all Spaniards, the close association between extreme right wing politics and bull fighting has also not helped. The Santa Pola bull has itself been the subject of political angled graffiti having been both painted with the Palestinian flag and in 2017 a mural of Picasso’s “Guernica”. It might consider itself lucky as other bulls have had delicate parts of their anatomy removed as a protest against nationalism and “machismo”!
However, despite the controversies, there is no denying the tremendous artistry of Manolo Prieto’s original design. He created a piece of commercial art that very quickly took on a life of its own and has long ago outgrown Osborne and brandy to become a mysterious and powerful national symbol. It is hard to think of a public artifact in any other country that has become so evocative through a combination of great design and serendipity. We are very lucky to have one of these famous bulls just outside Santa Pola, as you speed past please spare it a glance and appreciate this powerful symbol of Spain.

We had a fantastic Raffle and Collection for our Cancer Charity this month, and through our ladies’ generosity we were able to let the charity have a 217.00 euros donation in May. We thank everyone who contributed.
Kesari Restaurant and Deep provided us with a fantastic meal for our monthly social. There were only compliments for such a tasty meal with great service. It’s hard to serve nearly 50 ladies at once but somehow they manage it!
We also had our friendly Coffee/Breakfast meet-up at Texicano at the Carribassi Bars, which are getting more and more popular. We are now regularly getting over 20 ladies attending this informal get-together.

ENTERING AND LEAVING EU WITH PETS. WHAT’S NEW?
As everyone should know, travelling with pets from UK to EU and vice versa, despite successive agreements, became more difficult (and expensive) after Brexit. Since British European Pet Passports were no longer valid, a new document, the “famous” £200 British Health Certificate, appeared, so, no longer £0 for coming, €30-something for returning. But a temporary solution appeared: “making” the dog (or cat, or ferret; other species have a different regulation) “Spanish”. It was a good solution which allowed owners to save a lot of money.
The only problem was the mandatory rabies injection for keeping the passport valid had to be renewed in EU territory, since only EU Vets were allowed to sign injections at the passport. If you let rabies expire, EU Passport stopped being valid, so, back to the £200 certificate.
So far, so good, but somebody at EU realised, and then Delegated Regulation EU- 2026/131 appeared. It’s basically a reminder of the very well known importexport requirements for pets when entering and leaving EU (mandatory microchipping and rabies injection, 21 days period after the injection before being allowed to cross the border, countries from which pets are not allowed to enter the EU unless they prove they have an acceptable rabies antibodies titre, etc), except for article 18. In this article EU says the animal must have a valid passport or health certificate issued AT THE COUNTRY WHERE ANIMAL AND OWNER HAVE THEIR HABITUAL RESIDENCE. What does this mean? Now we have two different cases:
- let’s suppose you are an expat who have a home in Spain, and this home is your habitual residence, so you are registered at local Town Hall and everything, and you want to spend some time at the UK visiting your relatives or anything you want. In this
case, nothing to worry about: the Spanish (or other EU country) passport of your pet keeps being valid and you can come and go the same way you have been doing all the time. Of course, watch out for rabies injection expiration day, because if it happens while you are at the UK, no English Vet is allowed to update an EU passport, so this would imply back to £200 certificate for returning to your Spanish home.
-If you live at the UK, and you are registered there, and you are a tourist who is coming to EU for your holidays, even if you have a home here, you cannot apply for an EU passport for your pet, so, your only option is £200 certificate. Bad luck.
The only “good” thing with this new regulation, which is valid from last April, is EU will consider valid the health certificate for 6 months, which initially means if you are travelling 2 or more times from UK to EU in less than 6 months, you have to apply for £200 certificate just once. Another small (and not price-increasing) new thing that appears at 2026/131 is: if the animal is travelling with a person who is not the official owner, a signed authorization will be required.
Would it be a simpler and not so expensive way to travel abroad and returning with pets? Sure it is, but it would imply inventing a time machine for returning to the nonBrexitera. Sorry.

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL
Women’s Walking Football in Gran Alacant continues to grow, with new projects and fresh energy ahead. We are excited to share that, due to strong interest and commitment, the sessions will continue under the watchful eye of coach Jim Fraser, with support from GA Homefinders.
The focus of the sessions moving forward will be on fun and fitness. These sessions are open to everyone in Gran Alacant, whether you are a resident or just visiting for a holiday. Participants are encouraged to join in, have fun, and enjoy the experience without taking themselves too seriously, followed by a casual session debrief at the El Tio Chato cafeteria.
Sessions take place on Thursdays at the Astroturf pitch at the sports centre in Gran Alacant.

GA MENS WALKING FOOTBALL
Summer is here and our group at Gran Alacant Walking FootbalI will keep going for a few weeks yet until it gets way too hot. Thanks to all who came along to the social meet at Dream Corner and thanks to the staff there all for looking after everyone. The next scheduled event will be in August with further details to be released in the future.
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! We play each Wednesday at 12 noon on the astroturf at the Polideportivo (Sports Centre) in Gran Alacant. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have a multinational membership where the common language is...football. Ages range from early fifties to over 70. If you want to come along, please arrive around 11.50am to allow for teams to be arranged but be mindful of students who may still be around. The facility now closes at 1pm so we need to be out of the showers quickly!
In addition, there are quarterly social meets (combined with the women’s group). So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).
Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.

Tommy’s Bar in Gran Alacant hosted a special event in May with international medium Ang, raising €200 for the San José Obrero Orphanage.
Everyone enjoyed an inspiring and enchanting afternoon, all while supporting this meaningful cause. The event truly showcased the generosity and community spirit of Gran Alacant residents.
