Q: Shade sails

Hi Lou, hope your pre-summer is going well!

I wanted to share a question my son had about the park at the health center. He noticed that the shade sails are no longer there and wondered why. They used to provide much-needed shade so kids could play comfortably without the risks of excessive heat.

Could you share if there are any plans to reinstall this kind of sun protection? If wind is an issue, perhaps temporary solutions could be considered - like putting the sails up from May to November when the sun is strongest, or installing retractable awnings with secure locking mechanisms.

Thanks so much for your insight, and wishing you a great day!

Borja Merino's reply:

The shade sails are currently not in place because they have been repeatedly damaged by acts of vandalism and have required repairs. Work is underway to address the issue, and efforts are being made to restore them.

Hi Lou,

Please pass on our congratulations to the councillors of Gran Alacant for installing the shade sails in the children’s playground. Hopefully they last, or measures are taken to remove them in case of wind and cold, for example at the end of October, store them away and reinstall them in mid-May. That way they might last longer.

Soon there will be a drinking water fountain in the park, the sports centre and some other places as well, and we will continue improving Gran Alacant. With all the ups and downs, hills and this heat, it would be very much appreciated to have some water to drink along the way. You can look at the example of Alicante City Council and Aguas de Alicante, with public and free drinking water fountains installed in parks.

Thank you and have a nice summer.

SANTA POLA TO REINFORCE SUMMER HEALTHCARE SERVICES

Santa Pola will see a significant boost in healthcare capacity this summer as the Elche–General Hospital Health Department strengthens services between July and August 2026 to meet increased seasonal demand.

The plan includes the addition of eight doctors and six nurses, with extra staff assigned across key areas such as the Casa del Mar clinic for visitors, the main health centre’s emergency services, and the Gran Alacant and Tabarca clinics.

Gran Alacant will also benefit from an extra doctor and nurse to improve coverage during peak population months, and Tabarca will receive additional medical reinforcement during July and August.

The initiative aims to reduce pressure on services during the busy tourist season and ensure faster, more efficient care for both residents and visitors.

SANTA POLA ACTIVATES SUMMER FIRE BRIGADE REINFORCEMENT

The city of Santa Pola has activated its seasonal summer fire brigade service from today until 16 September to reinforce emergency response during the high tourist season. The Consorcio de Bomberos del Baix Vinalopó will station a daily unit (10:00–22:00) consisting of one fire engine and four personnel to cover increased population levels.

The unit is based at the municipal building in Playa Lisa and includes a crew of one corporal, three firefighters, and a communications operator. The service aims to improve response times during summer peak demand, with additional measures taken to protect equipment from heat.

ARENALES DEL SOL WELCOMES NEW EROSKI SUPERMARKET

The picturesque coastal village of Arenales del Sol is set to make life easier for both residents and tourists with the opening of a new Eroski supermarket at the beginning of July. Announced earlier by Mayor Pablo Ruz, the store will provide year-round service seven days a week.

Located at the corner of Zamora and Bahía Streets, the supermarket will create 9 new jobs and offer an impressive 5,500 product references. Shoppers will enjoy extended 12-hour opening days, designed to fit modern lifestyles and busy schedules.

This launch marks the first step toward a larger commercial hub in Arenales del Sol, signaling further development and additional retail spaces in the surrounding districts in the near future.

GRAN ALACANT SET FOR ROAD

UPGRADE BOOST IN €559,000 INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN

Gran Alacant is set to benefit from a new wave of road improvements as part of a wider €559,000 resurfacing programme approved by Santa Pola Town Hall.

The initiative will see works carried out across 28 key locations in the municipality, with Gran Alacant highlighted as one of the priority areas in response to ongoing residential growth and increased traffic demand.

Focus on safer, smoother local roads

In Gran Alacant, resurfacing works will target key routes including Avenida del Mediterráneo and surrounding access roads in the Monte de Santa Pola area. These upgrades aim to improve driving conditions, reduce wear on vehicles, and enhance overall road safety for residents and visitors.

Local officials say the programme is part of a long-term commitment to maintaining infrastructure in fast-developing neighbourhoods like Gran Alacant, where population growth has placed increasing pressure on road networks.

Supporting a growing coastal community

Once a quiet hillside urbanisation overlooking the Mediterranean, Gran Alacant has evolved into one of the most dynamic residential areas in the Santa Pola municipality. With thousands of year-round residents and continued new development, demand for reliable infrastructure has grown significantly.

The resurfacing works form part of a broader effort to ensure that roads, roundabouts, and residential streets keep pace with the area’s expansion.

Part of a wider municipality upgrade

While Gran Alacant is a key focus, the programme spans multiple districts including Santa Pola town centre, Playa Lisa, and Gran Playa. The overall goal is to modernise ageing road surfaces and improve connectivity across the municipality.

Works are expected to begin shortly, with phased interventions planned to minimise disruption to residents.

SANTA POLA WINS PRESTIGIOUS

Santa Pola Town Hall has been awarded the Escoba de Oro (Golden Broom) in recognition of its advances in sustainable urban cleaning and waste management.

The award highlights the municipality’s investment in modern, more efficient streetcleaning systems, including a fleet where 70% of machinery is zero-emission and a significant shift towards electric equipment.

According to the council, these improvements have delivered major environmental benefits, including a 65% reduction in water use and a 23% reduction in energy consumption.

SANTA POLA HOSTS BLUEFIN TUNA TAGGING MISSION

Santa Pola hosted the Scientific Angler Tagging Tour (12–14 June 2026), successfully tagging 20 bluefin tuna with electronic devices in a major marine research operation.

The project, in collaboration with IFREMER, involved 10 boats, scientists, and technical teams, studying tuna migration, diving behaviour, and ocean conditions across the Mediterranean and Atlantic.

Santa Pola Marina hosted the coordination and briefings, while tagging was carried out at sea under strict conservation protocols.

The initiative reinforces Santa Pola’s role as a key base for marine science, with 163 tuna tagged since 2023, supporting ongoing research into sustainable fisheries and migration tracking.

Book of the month by Beth

A fast-paced whodunnit Ideal holiday reading My Recommended Book of the Month

Holy Island by LJ

Detective Chief Inspector Ryan retreats to Holy Island seeking sanctuary when he is forced to take a sabbatical from his duties as a homicide detective.

A few days before Christmas, his peace is shattered and he is thrust back into the murky world of murder when a young woman is found dead amongst the ancient ruins of the nearby priory.

Dr Anna Taylor, who was born on the island, arrives back on the island as a police consultant. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight, while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation.

Set in the spectacular Northumbrian island of Lindisfarne , this is the first novel of a crime series involving DCI Ryan. It was fast-paced and well written - No2 is called ‘Sycamore Gap’.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

CULTURE CLUB On

MARBELLA, GIBRALTAR & RONDA

It’s that time of year again, when the Marco Polos and Nellie Blys amongst us take to the road to explore hidden parts of this beautiful land.

On the 19 th of April, 92 of us boarded 2 luxury coaches (with toilets!) to head out for a 4-night (5 day ) break on visits Marbella, Gibraltar and Ronda.

These trips expertly organised and executed by Neil Lloyd and Alison Clark are becoming increasingly popular, with the next one to Salou in September almost at capacity.

Neil and Alison by now have us well trained and so everyone diligently displayed their passports/TIEs as we boarded the coach knowing that this would ensure a speedy check in once we arrived in Marbella…..or so we thought!

Our “fun bus” with games of bingo and a quiz, ensured the time passed quickly and passengers on the “quiet bus” were grateful for the refreshment stops (smoking breaks) which relieved the monotony of the 7-hour journey.

Rumour has it that places on the Fun Bus on the next trip can be secured with a deposit of a bottle of Brandy handed personally to Neil! The quiz winners on the bus deserve a mention – Randy’s Babes – aka Jen and Jane with an impressive score of 51, although they are professionals of course.

The organisation and military precision with which the planning and the journey itself was undertaken ended on arrival at the hotel. Despite Neil and Alisons provision of all passenger details prior to the trip, the

enthusiastic member of staff on reception was not in the loop and proceeded to attempt to check in all 92 guests with passports and TIEs needing to be produced again. The ensuing pandemonium resembled the early morning rush at the Sabadell bank on a weekday.

The profuse apology for the mix up, delivered by the Manager of the hotel the following day was well received and sufficiently calmed the waters to ensure a smooth sailing (road trip) ever after.

Day 1 of our trip allowed a full day free time in Marbella. Our hotel was within easy walking distance of the Old Town and the beautiful beach, and the experience did not disappoint. Of particular interest (besides the shops, cafes, and beautiful park) were the Salvador Dali sculptures which offer a unique window into the artists surreal and imaginative world. The open-air museum highlights the bronze sculptures and are an awesome sight near the seafront.

Evening entertainment in the hotel was in part provided by the Maître D in the restaurant who appeared to have all the leadership skills of Atilla the Hun and was presumably a Brigadier General in a former life.

Day 2 of our visit centred around a trip to Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory under the sovereignty of the British Crown. Many of us were excited about the bargains we might pick up (Gibraltar does not currently have a traditional VAT system and shopping is duty free. Alas, although some were able to acquire bargains in relation to tobacco, alcohol and jewellery, big name shops such as M and S, Zara and Matalan did not appear any cheaper than the UK.

On Tour

There were no sightings of the infamous Barbary Apes that supposedly terrorise the area, mainly due to the fact that it cost at least 30 euros to access their habitat –even once you had climbed the hill to get to them!

The general consensus seemed to be that Gibraltar is somewhere you might visit once for a shopping trip or to satisfy your craving for British fish and chips but not somewhere you’d rush back to, particularly as the weather also seems to replicate that of Britain. Still, it was an educative visit, particularly for the couple confused by time zones, who altered their watches to British time and therefore arrived back to the coach one hour later than everyone else! There was no other option but to wait for them – Neil was leaving no one behind.

Evenings at the Hotel were spent in the bar area, conversing with friends and regaling experiences of the day. However, it was noted that some did sneak off to a nearby sports bar to catch up with the football.

Day 3 was the day which many of us were most looking forward to. We were to visit the beautiful city of Ronda, a mountain top city in Spain’s Malaga province set above a deep gorge. The gorge separates the city’s circa 15 th century new town from its old town dating to Moorish rule.

Ronda is considered one of Spain’s beautiful cities due to its spectacular location. The group spent an enjoyable few hours exploring the views, the shops and of course the restaurants/bars, only moving on to explore another beautiful site at Setenil be las Bodegas, a town renowned for its whitewashed houses built into the surrounding cliffs. The town’s hilltop castle was once an Arab Fortress, and its tower offers spectacular views of the town and countryside.

Needless to say, the following day we returned home, as on previous trips, entertained, educated and possibly exhausted but all eagerly looking forward to the next one.

Besides expressing our appreciation to Neil and Alison for a great time, thanks should also go to the Coach company TEMIBUS for transporting us so efficiently and safely.

Further info about future trips can be obtained by contacting Neil on WhatsApp +34 71108153.

At time of writing there are currently 2 rooms left for Salou and a planned trip to the Christmas Market in Madrid in December is sold out.

Future trips planned for 2027 include Caiz, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Nerja, Cuenca and possibly Lisbon, Portugal.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793

English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

WITH FLYING COLOURS by Jon Reina Aldeguer

Certain dog breeds are easily distinguishable because of their singular fur colour. For instance, the golden retriever, as its name suggests, is a cream or beige colour. Labradors bear a remarkable resemblance to goldens, one of their most notable differences also being that of the colour of their fur: while labs do also come in beige, they can also be black or brown.

This is more obvious when it comes to labs, but neither they nor goldens will ever have patches of differently pigmented fur. Two labrador parents of different colours can have a litter of black, beige and brown puppies and the colours will never mix.

On the other hand, offspring within the same cat litter can have different fur patterns and colours (calicos, tabbies, tuxedos, etc.) Regardless of what their parents look like. In actuality, it is unknown what the factor determining the pattern and colours of a kitten when they´re born is, as it clearly has nothing to do with those of the mom and dad. Colour and patterns often define dog breeds, but when it comes to cats, you could have a European cat with the characteristic pattern of a Siamese cat.

Mammals don´t display a wide array of colours on their fur. With it being limited to black, grey, white, red, orange, brown and beige; we are arguably the most boring looking creatures on the planet.

On the contrary, bird species around the globe exhibit an extensive variety of colour on their feathers, from the dull, earthy coloured common sparrow to the flamboyant, brightly-hued Gouldian finch. Birds are, without a doubt, mother Natures´s fashionistas: not only do they have eye catching plumage, but some of them "change into a different outfit" depending on occasion. Winter plumage helps them camouflage

in the snow and keep their temperature stable, whereas breeding plumage signals health and dominance which helps with attracting potential partners. Some of them, like the bearded vulture, even wear makeup! By rolling on iron-rich mud, they dye their white face feathers red, which they do to signal status.

Then we have insects and reptiles, which are just as if not more colourful than our feathered friends, so much so that we can´t even fully appreciate their seemingly never ending battery of colour. This is because they sport colours of a wavelength that isn´t perceptible to the human eye, like ultraviolets and infrareds. But if we´re talking about exceptional colours in nature, it would be a disservice not to mention the peacock mantis shrimp. What makes this animal so remarkable are its vibrant colouration and its highly developed eyes -the most developed of the animal kingdom, as a matter of fact- allowing it to detect ualtraviolet, visible and polarized light.

With this mention, I would like to introduce the group of animals that takes the crown when it comes to its vast colourfulness: sea creatures, particularly nudibranchs and cephalopods; the latter group being able to change pigments on the spot, a characteristic they only share with chameleons and certain amphibians and fish. Even the sea animals that don´t tend to be as colourful often still have blue bodies, which is the least commonly occurring colour in nature.

You can learn a lot about an animal based on the colours on its body. The 2021 British- Australian miniseries Life in Colour does a deep dive into the intricacies of the ways animals use colour to their advantage. This series is narrated by Sir David Attenborough, who recently turned 100 years old

It will be on the first Tuesday in August with the venue to be confirmed. For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for more information.

Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! Gran Alacant Walking Football club has met each Wednesday at 12 noon on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). As mentioned, an update on the day and time for the new sessions will be intimated. The cost is only 1 euro per session. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).

Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. Some of these will continue over the summer but earlier in the morning to void the worst of the heat...

GA CLEANUP June Meetup

Our final GA Cleanup session before the summer break saw another fantastic turnout, with volunteers meeting at Carabassi Centre to help tidy the public areas. As always, the group did an excellent job, collecting a surprising amount of small pieces of litter from bushes, green spaces and walkways.

A big thank you to all of our volunteers who joined us last month, throughout the season, as well as the GA-Homefinders team for their continued support.

The cleanup group will now take a well-earned break over the summer months and will return in September. Keep an eye on the August edition of the magazine for details of the next meetup.

Have a wonderful summer, and we'll see you again in September!

Gran Alacant Ladies GALs

WHO ARE THE GRAN ALACANT LADIES (GALS)?

If you're out and about in the restaurants of Gran Alacant and see a large group of ladies, enjoying a good lunch in a friendly environment, that's probably us! We meet for lunch once a month, and there are normally around 40 or 50 of us enjoying the local hospitality, while at the same time making new friends, sharing ideas and information and simply enjoying the best of times here in Gran Alacant.

You may see a group of happy ladies on a Sunday morning, taking in a walk and the sea air and coffee along the wonderful promenade at Los Arenales, that will be our Sunday Strollers who meet every Sunday at La Milla.

We can also be seen once a month meeting for a relaxed coffee morning which has grown to over 25 ladies since we started, it's always a great way to spend a morning, catching up on all things local.

What you don't see, if you're not a member, is the online social network the group provides. Our private Facebook group provides a safe space to ask for help, advice, share recommendations, buy and sell items, and is the place where our Calander of events can be found.

Our group of over 1500 ladies who either live here in Gran Alacant or the surrounding

areas or have a connection with the area come from all over the globe, everyone is welcome. English is the predominant language used in the group.

Any ladies wishing to join only need to answer a few simple questions.

The group also raises money for charities, this year being asociacion espanola contra el cancer and through various fundraising activities have already raised over 1000 euros so far this year.

The group is managed by Claire Williams, Selina Bruce and Joanne Whearity (affectionally called The A Team).

A warm welcome awaits.
