I regularly take my garden waste there, but I often find it closed when it should be open. It’s really frustrating when you’ve filled your van with garden rubbish, only to arrive and have to take everything back home and unload it again. KEEPING GRAN ALACANT CLEAN: A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

Following concerns raised by residents about rubbish being left around bins, Councillor for Cleaning, Encarni Ramírez Baeza, is once again reminding everyone of the importance of using waste facilities responsibly Residents are asked to help keep Gran Alacant clean by making the most of the space available in the containers - flattening cardboard boxes, squashing plastic bottles and ensuring that nothing is left on the ground around the bins. The council also reminds residents that FREE COLLECTION SERVICES are available for bulky items and garden waste. Please use these services rather than leaving unwanted items next to the bins. (Collection contact numbers can be found at the top of this page.)

At the same time, action is being taken against those who ignore the rules. The Local Police have recently issued more than 3,000€ in fines for offences including illegally leaving rubbish, garden waste and bulky items in public areas, as well as unauthorised dumping. Keeping Gran Alacant clean is everyone’s responsibility. By working together and disposing of waste correctly, we can help maintain the beautiful community we all enjoy.

SANTA POLA RECOGNISED FOR OUTSTANDING TRANSPARENCY

The aim is to continue improving Gran Alacant's green spaces and ensure they are well maintained for everyone to enjoy. NEW GRAN ALACANT MEDICAL CENTRE TAKES ANOTHER STEP FORWARD The Santa Pola Town Hall has achieved an impressive 98.15% score in the latest Infoparticipa transparency evaluation, placing it among the most transparent councils in the Valencian Community and the highest-rated council in Alicante province. The council will receive the Infoparticipa Seal for the fourth consecutive year, recognising its commitment to open government, accessibility and keeping residents informed. IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY AT GRAN ALACANT LIBRARY Work has recently started around the Gran Alacant Library area, with cleaning and Plans for the new auxiliary medical centre maintenance tasks being carried out to in Gran Alacant have moved forward, with improve the surroundings. the Local Government Board approving the construction of the access roads to the future facility. The new medical centre will be located on Calle Monte de Santa Pola, next to El Faro School, and represents an investment of €773,362.64. The project marks another important step towards improving local healthcare services and providing residents with a dedicated medical facility closer to home.

NEW EROSKI SUPERMARKET OPENS IN ARENALES DEL SOL

Arenales del Sol has welcomed the opening of its first year-round supermarket, with the new Eroski store now open seven days a week. The gardens around the municipal building on Avenida Escandinavia in Gran Alacant have been renovated as part of Santa Pola’s ongoing programme to improve and beautify public spaces.

Originally planned for later in 2026, the supermarket opened ahead of schedule and has already attracted many local residents and visitors, with opening promotions proving especially popular.

The works have included maintenance and the replacement of plants, creating a fresher and more attractive environment for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Located in the new commercial area between Avenida Costa Blanca and Calle Bahía, the store offers a wide range of products, fresh produce, extended opening hours and Eroski’s own-brand range.

Saturday 20th June The annual summer barbeque was well atended by thirty six members. The chefs Ian and Howie did a great job, a big thank you to you both. The food was lovely the drinks flowed, another very successful afternoon enjoyed by all who atended. Thank you to Ian Hamilton and the social committee for organising the barbeque. Steve Leatherland won the football card with Hull City.

CHICKEN RUN

Our Chicken Run for June was held at la Marina Bowls Club for the first time and went very well indeed. We were joined by eight players from La Marina and had a total of thirty players. We have also agreed to hold the Chicken Run for July at La Marina. The chickens were won by Margaret Finlayson twenty eight shots and Garth Slater thirty seven shots. Charlotte Transberg and Steve Leatherland won the eggs. Thank you to Maggie and Ian Crawford who sponsored the chickens, Ian and Julia Hamilton who donated the

eggs. The winner of the football card was Jack Baker with Preston. A big thank you to all the members from Monte Mar and La Marina who organised the event and helped with making it a resounding success.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

Gran Alacant Comes Together to Help Hugo’s Home Farm LOCAL COMMUNITY RAISES €800 FOR ANIMALS IN NEED A small rescue centre is making a huge difference in the lives of animals who have suffered neglect, abandonment and mistreatment — and thanks to the kindness of the Gran Alacant community, Hugo’s Home Farm has received a very special donation. Gran Alacant residents and local businesses came together to raise an incredible €800 for Hugo’s Home Farm, supporting the ongoing care of rescued horses and other animals at this wonderful sanctuary. The fundraising was made possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses including Quicksave, Tommy’s and Molly Malone’s, who helped support the cause and encourage the community to get involved. A special thank you also goes to Pam Hardy, whose beautiful handmade Kindness Dolls helped raise additional funds. Each doll is created with love and care, bringing joy while also helping support important local causes. About Hugo’s Home Farm Located in the Alicante/Murcia area, Hugo’s Home Farm was created by Helping Coco Horse Rescue, a registered charity in Spain dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected and abandoned equines. Founded by Colin Brown from Scotland, together with Sebastian Hernandez and his family, the farm provides a safe haven where rescued horses and ponies can receive the care, attention and love they deserve. Alongside the horses, visitors can also meet a variety of other rescued animals including alpacas, goats, pigs and chickens. The aim of the farm is not only to rescue animals but also to educate visitors about animal welfare and responsible care.

Every Donation Makes a Difference Keeping a rescue centre running requires constant dedication and financial support. Food, veterinary treatment, farrier care and daily expenses all rely on donations from people who believe in the work being done. The €800 raised by the Gran Alacant community will help towards these essential costs and make a real difference to the animals living at Hugo’s Home Farm. Whether through donations, fundraising events or simply visiting the farm, every act of kindness helps provide these animals with a safer and happier future. Gran Alacant Ladies Well it's getting to the time of year that some of our members go back to the cooler climes of northern Europe. Some by design and some because they have to due to the 90 day rules . Us residents adapt to the hot conditions by getting up early to walk the dog or going to the beach/pool early before the tourists arrive. We are still enjoying our Coffee/Brunch mornings and have exciting news that we will be going to the new Duna Restaurant to give them a try for our meet-up. Watch this space. Review to follow. We had our last Coffee / Breakfast at El Tex in June, but are moving to pastures new. Skippers hosted us for our Buffet in June and we do like to give a variety of restaurants our business.

Altea is best known for its famous whitewashed old town and magnificent views. However, hidden away just outside of the town is a secret and magical garden. This is Jardín de los Sentidos and has been created by its Dutch owners over the last 40 years in a natural valley sunk deep into the ground. Originally a private passion project the garden is now open to visitors; there is also a tea room serving home made cakes and a variety of teas and infusions. When the owner first came to live in his little valley it was just another barren rambla with only a few large trees and a choked patch of cañas along the floor of the valley indicating that somewhere below lay water. The steep sides of the creek seemingly offered no place for plants to flourish. André is however not a man to be deterred and applying his knowledge as a horticulturalist and a huge amount of hard work he and his partner created a veritable Garden of Eden out of the dusty valley. Today it is possible to wander through the garden, following a path down from the tea house at the lip of the valley through terraces and platforms winding to the floor where a shaded chain of pools and streams provide a magical world of plants and wildlife. Andre’s knowledge of plants has contributed to a rich variety of plants from all over the world. The narrow but deep valley has been populated with specimens of many types of trees providing broad shading to allow delicate flora not normally found in Southern Spain to flourish under the protecting canopy. For once, it is absolutely true to say that the experience of visiting a garden is truly immersive. Once one reaches the floor of the valley one is totally surrounded by plants and nature with the sky only visible directly above through the tangled net of trees.

In the famous words of the poet Andrew Marvell “Annihilating all that’s made/To a green thought in a green shade”. To have achieved this from scratch in a dusty rambla is a quite remarkable achievement. We visited with the Mediterranean Garden Society which includes a number of very experienced and expert gardeners and they were impressed by the range of different plants and species present in this valley garden. The garden is a serious exercise in horticulture with the different habitats created at various levels of the valley permitting a complex community of plants to co-exist. We have not seen such a rich and diverse collection of planting anywhere else in gardens in the region. André seems undeterred by the obvious

challenges of our local climate and water scarcity. When he first came across the valley in the 1980s he recognised the unique value of the water flowing underneath the valley floor and the possibility of creating a protected microclimate by careful planning and planting. However, it is the scale of the work and the achievement that impresses the visitor.

The garden also includes various built structures such as pagodas and platforms where it is possible to sit and admire the surrounding planting. At the top of the valley one is up in the tree tops able to observe birds and insects directly at human eye level whilst on the valley floor there are footbridges across the ponds and streams over water teeming with amphibians and fish. One can start and end a visit with excellent homemade cakes and pastries enjoyed on the terraces of the teahouse at the entrance to the garden. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, a refreshing alternative to the increasingly corporate hospitality on offer on the coast. We were served by André himself and members of his family were hanging out in the tea house. If you are lucky enough to meet André he is happy to share his remarkable story and explain the challenges and pleasures of building this special private world which we can now all enjoy. The Jardín de los Sentidos garden is well worth a visit on its own terms as a garden and nature site. It also offers a charming alternative to the increasingly glitzy world of the Costa Blanca, or just go for the cake!

A DECALOGUE FOR HEATWAVES Despite negationists, climate change is real. "Summers have always been hot", they say. Okay, but does anybody remember a summer with a heatwave every week?? Checkmate. Heatwaves are becoming stronger and stronger and more and more common, and they are killing more and more people every year, so imagine yourself during this period in a fur coat you can't remove: that's our pets point of wiew, so you'd better take some precautions for avoiding a lethal heat stroke. Spanish Ministry of Social Rights has prepared a decalogue with some simple recommendations for keeping our pets safe during a heatwave:

•

Fur is important. It has an important role for isolating their bodies from external temperatures. Ask your groomer for some advice about which is the most convenient for your pet, because every individual is different.

Don't take them for a walk in the heat of the day. Temperatures over 30°C are a serious danger for ill and brachycephalic dogs, and over 32°C every dog is endangered, even the most athletic ones.

•

Sun screen. There are special ones for pets available at the market. Anyway, we think the best option, specially in case of a white dog or cat is not to expose them to direct sunlight in summer: skin cancer may be lethal .

•

Ground burns! Avoid asphalt and metalic surfaces. If they can burn your palm when touching them, remember your dog doesn't wear shoes!

•

Avoid direct sunlight if you go out with them, and if they are indoors, allow them tho choose the coolest rooms at home if they want.

•

Watch out for hydration. Don't forget to carry a bottle of fresh water with you, and in case of cats, electric fountains stimulate them to drink. Cooling beds are always a good idea, and making the dog swim in a swimming pool or at the beach is ok (don't let it drink sea water since it's a powerful laxative!).

•

Muzzles. If your dog is obliged to wear it, choose a basket one, and big enough to allow your dog to open the mouth completely. Remember the only way they can control body temperature is panting!

•

Heat stroke. If, despite all this recommendations it happens, go to the nearest Vet practice for an emergency treatment. Every minute counts for saving its life!!!

•

Don't leave your pet in your car. Extreme temperatures can be reached in a matter of minutes. Lots of pets and children deaths happen every year for this reason.

•

Avoid excessive exercise. Dogs are unable to sweat, so they may suffer a heat stroke much more easily than us.

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL Ladies walking football will be taking a break until September Women’s Walking Football in Gran Alacant continues to grow with new projects and fresh energy ahead. Due to strong interest and commitment, sessions will continue under the watchful eye of coach Jim Fraser, with support from GA Homefinders. The focus of the sessions is fun and fitness. These sessions are open to everyone in Gran Alacant, whether you are a resident or just visiting for a holiday. Participants are encouraged to join in, have fun, and enjoy the experience without taking things too seriously, followed by a casual session debrief at the El Tio Chato cafeteria. Sessions take place on Thursdays at the Astroturf pitch at the sports centre in Gran Alacant. We will be taking a summer break in July and August and will resume in September.

Hello all. I hope you are all keeping cool and having plenty hydration breaks in the height of summer. GAWF is still on a break during August to avoid the worst of the heat. We will get back together in September and an update on the time of the sessions will appear should they change. This is likely due to yet another increase in the number of Portacabins to accommodate an increased number of students at the school. Although the sessions are suspended, we still have the social event to look forward to. It will be on Tuesday 4th August at 1pm at The London Tavern in the main Commercial Centre. All players and partners are welcome. For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group for more information. Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below). Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. Some of these will continue over the summer but earlier in the morning to void the worst of the heat.
