Hello everyone Firstly a big thank you to all of our advertisers and contributers for getting info to us early last month with our printer shutting down during August for summer holidays. Well, September has arrived with hopefully a little cooler weather. Children going back to school, alot of holidaymakers making their way home too. So Gran Alacant slowly getting quieter. At least we know there will still be lots of warm sunny days ahead of us. It was good to see the bars and resturants busy in the evenings during August, with the beaches very busy during the day. The Santa Pola Feista´s are held this month, itinerary for these are on the tourist information page, certainly well worth going to the many events that are held over those days. Don´t forget about the Table Top sales on the 3rd Sunday of each month held on the municipal car park near the Medical Centre. If you would like a stall and you are registered with the Town Hall you can contact people concerned on 609 932 578 to book a pitch Winners of the Los Belgas wordsearch were:Thomasen frida and Vercruyse Erick Have a good month Sandra & Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! The first thing this month, is information supplied to us by the Gran Alacant Chemist. You may have read or heard many variations of the new changes to the farmacias and health system here in Spain. Rumours have been rife concerning the Farmacia on Gran Alacant.

Here are the facts from the Farmacia themselves:New presciptions for pensioners

My name is Jessica West and anyone who comes into the chemist in Gran Alacant will know me. I know there has been a lot of bad information in the local newspapers about the new prescriptions and that pensioners don´t have to pay but I’m here to clear it all up for you. Everyone has to pay 10% towards medication from the 1st July 2012. No one will pay more than 30 euros a month, that is the maximum. After 30 euros the prescriptions will start coming out with a price of 0.00 euros. Depending on if/how much tax you pay will determine on what ´group´ you are in. Let’s look at it this way, I have found this way easier to explain to my clients. Group A – up to 18,000 euros annually Group B – from 18,000 euros to

4

100,000 annually Group A pay a max of 8 euros a month for prescriptions Group B pay a max of 18 euros a month for prescriptions Lets say you are in group A and you pay more than your max of 8 euros within 3-6 months the difference should be returned into your Spanish bank account. Money situation with the chemist

I know that everyone has heard about the situation that the Spanish chemists are in at the moment, but I don’t think anyone really understands how the system works. Each chemist buys in their own medication from the supplier, we cut out the bar codes and stick them to the prescriptions then we put them all in order (this can be a long process checking and re-checking) then they get sent off and within 1 ½ months we get reimbursed the money, however for the last 8 months the Valencian Government hasn’t had the money to pay back to the chemists, so some of the chemists are struggling. They owe us money from March to date (however this may have changed since I have written this) If the Valencian Government don’t or can’t pay the chemists anymore then they will not be able to afford to stay open and will be forced to close down temporarily. However they will give you notice if this were

to happen. Just to warn everyone there still may be a few strikes coming your way because if the chemist get told they will be paid and the money isn’t paid on time or at all then there will be a strike that may last a few hours or maybe a few days. But please if you see your local chemist is closed it doesn’t mean that it has closed down.

Jess will keep our magazine informed every month of any new developments.

With the new pavements down the hill outside the Carabasi complex now completed, the workmen have now moved to an area outside Sezavu near the school, where more pavement construction is taking place. When this area is completed the workmen are then to go to various areas on the urbanisa-

tion to make junction pavements more wheelchair, pushchair friendly.

The new market area is looking rather “up market”. Not just an area flattened and then left, but more of a landscaping project. The project should be completed by the end of the summer.

There is a mass, held every Saturday at the wonderful setting, behind the library.

The beaches of Santa Pola have passed with high marks its ninth external audit by the certifying AENOR of its Quality Management System according to UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 and EN ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management, obtaining the third renewal of the certificate of Quality and Environmental Management. The report AENOR Audit highlights the efforts made by the Department of Beaches through the Local Development Agency on behalf of the services offered to users of the beaches of the town with numerous campaigns and actions as environmental campaigns. The activities carried out in raising

7

awareness and training for both users and service concessionaires in courses HACCP and Food Handler. With regard to cleaning the beaches, the report highlights the performance of AENOR developed by local police services and cleaning of the beaches of Varadero, Gran Playa and Tamarit on the night of the San Juan bonfires, in which many users of these beaches congratulated the City for these actions. It also emphasizes that for the first time since the implementation of the management system and environmental quality on the beaches of Santa Pola, has gotten into the system the 12 kiosks and bars that are in the control of the public domain. In this regard from the Bureau of Infrastructure licenses have been processed to open all kiosks. As for the quality of bathing water, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Water made fortnightly analytics sand baths on our urban beaches and it is noteworthy that during the first week of July there had been excellent ratings, they were the highest rating that could be achieved, and as shown by the results that have been obtained during the past four summer seasons (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011). For all other non-urban beaches (La Gola, the Pinet, Terrace of L'Arena beach in the Hermitage), Aquagest is the agency responsible for conducting the analysis carried out from March through September and obtain excellent results for non-urban beaches. In past issues we have mentioned that fines are being issued for garden rubbish that is being

8

dumped by the bins. Fines of 750 euro have been issued to some of the culprits, so we have all been warned of the consequences. The softly softly approach has not worked, hence the fines. Tree/shrub and garden cuttings should be cut up into small pieces, put into a bag, and then placed in the bins. Or, if you have large amounts too big to cut up, it should be taken to the eco park on the Santa Pola industrial estate where they have the facilities to crunch up the waste so that it can be recycled.

Yobs have stoned and broken the system that operates the fountain on the roundabout at the bottom of the Maxcoop hill. The repair costs are now being discussed with the insurance company. What goes through the minds of these stupid people when they think it´s fun to spoil property. We have been informed by the GA train that their August times stay the same for September except that after 16th September they finish around 22.00hr. Although the train is Spanish

owned and Spanish run, they do have a website in English which has plenty of information, go to

A question from a reader:-

Dear Sir, When having your meeting with Loreto please could you ask her if there is any news on when and if the swimming pool in Santa Pola will be finished. Last time, a long time ago she said it was going to court, how did that go? Can you also thank her and anyone concerned very much for the great fiestas we had last month in Gran Alacant, it was very much appreciated and makes us think how very lucky we are to live in Gran Alacant. Thank you, Valerie Haynes We will speak with Loreto about the Santa Pola swimming pool at our next meeting.

INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY THE GA BOWLS CLUB

During the year the Monte Mar Bowling Club collects donations for charitable causes and this year is no exception. In June we held an evening where we gave out donations but one of our charities could not be there so we chose this birthday evening to present a donation to the Icnelia ONGD. This is a charity which raises money to support children in Nicaragua. The club donated 250€ and Antonio donated a similar amount. The donation was presented by the Club Chairman, Mike Farrelly and was accepted by José Miguel Zaragoza, president of Icnelia ONGD.

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu) Kings Cup Division A Wednesday 25thJuly 2012 For our last Kings Cup game of the current season, the Montemar Lords visited Horadada and on a scorching hot day managed to come away with a win. We won all disciplines except the Men’s Singles and one lost that by just one shot. Overall we won four disciplines, lost one and got the extra two points for the shots. Our thanks to Alan and Babs, who both bowled very well, despite this being their first game after being out of action for some time. Well done to the pairs of Ethel & Tony Finan; the trips of John Caiger, Denise Ashberry and Dave Melville, and the rinks of Rowena Good, Joe Ridley, Harry Dobson and Diane Ridley who all won their games. Our thanks also go to all the players who have played for the Lords throughout the summer season Burger and Song Night 26th July 2012 This was to be held around the pool area but due to a threatening thunderstorm we set up shop in the Rincon Restaurant. The burgers were excellent and the entertainer John Zeller ( The man with the golden voice) regaled us with old and new favourites. The delight of the evening was Jenny Pagala with her rendering of Rod Stewart's “Sailing”. Internal Sunset League After 8 games, the four teams of Colin & Lynne Armitage and Harry Dobson; Babs & John Caiger and Jan Soars; Tony Finan, David Smy and Arthur Buxton; and Ted & Val Hyman and Jim Ure are all in with a chance of winning. The last game is on Monday 20th August following which the presentation will be made to the winners. On Tuesday 14th August the Bowls and Social Club hosted a special bowling event to celebrate the birthday of the Honorary President of the club, Don Antonio Martinez. 12 teams took part in two 7-end games. After a quick totalling up of the scores the team of Babs Caiger, Mick Soars and David Eades were declared as the winners. Runners-Up were Sue Bounds, Mike Farrelly and Alan Ashberry. The game was followed by a meal in the El Rincon Restaurant after which Antonio presented the prizes to the teams. Two of the players, Jan Soars and Pat Fielding also celebrated their birthdays The Winners with the Trophy and we all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ in both English and Spanish. Modern Technology

I was visiting my daughter and son-in-law the other night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. 'This is the 21st century, old man,' he said. 'We don't waste money on newspapers. Here, you can borrow my iPad.' I can tell you, that bloody fly never knew what hit it........

A woman goes to the welfare office to register for child benefit. "How many children?" asks the welfare officer. "Ten" replies the Liverpool girl, "Ten?" says the welfare worker. "What are their names?" "Nathan, Nathan, Nathan, Nathan, Nathan, Nathan, Nathan, Nathan, Nathan and Nathan" "Doesn't that get confusing?" "Naah..." says the Liverpool girl, "It's great because if they are out playing in the street, I just have to shout 'Nathan yer dinner's ready!' or 'Nathan go to bed now!' and they all do it. "What if you want to speak to one individually?" says the curious welfare worker. "That's easy," says the Liverpool girl... "I just use their surnames"

Bill and his wife Blanche go to the Royal Norfolk Show every year, And every year Bill would say, " Blanche, I'd like to ride in that helicopter" Blanche always replied, “I know Bill, but that helicopter ride is twenty quid, And twenty quid is twenty quid! " One year Bill and Blanche went to the fair, and Bill said, “Blanche, I'm 75 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance " To this, Blanche replied, “Bill that helicopter ride is twenty quid, and twenty quid is twenty quid "The pilot overheard the couple and said, " Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word its twenty quid. " Bill and Blanche agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, But still not a word... When they landed, the pilot turned to Bill and said, “By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed! " Bill replied, " Well, to tell you the truth I almost said something when Blanche fell out, But you know, twenty quid is twenty quid! "

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Hot Dog Buns

These rolls are soft and light but don't fall to bits when you fill them!

The secret to these is in the shaping. Get a LARGE stainless steel scone cutter and squeeze it to make an oval shape. This can then be used to cut out buns of the same size, fat enough to take the hot dog and all the extras! Makes 12 large buns Ingredients

*1 tbsp vinegar *3 tbsp oil *1 tbsp sugar *1 tbsp salt *1 pint tepid water (568ml) *1 kg bread flour *2 tbsp instant yeast Topping *beaten egg *sesame or linseeds (optional) Method

1.Put the dough ingredients in the bowl of your mixer, with the bread flour and the yeast going in last. 2.Knead on speed 1 for 3 min and speed 2 for 3 min. The finished dough should be soft and fairly sticky. 3.Cover and allow to double in bulk. 4.Flour the counter top and turn out the dough. 5.Roll out to 1 cm thick and cut out shapes. 6.Pull slightly to lengthen if you want to (I didn't as mine were for chicken) and place on prepared baking sheets. 7.Allow to rise, (until about 1.5 times in bulk) brush with egg wash and sprinkle with seeds. 8.Spritz with water. 9.Bake at 220 c (not fan) for around 12 minutes until golden brown. 10.Cool on wire racks, covered with a damp cloth. (This makes the crust nice and soft)

TIMETABLE & ROUTE FOR THE GRAN ALACANT TOURIST TRAIN

A Day on Tabarca One of the things quite often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola via google, rang them up and booked on a Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine reserve. Damon the owner lives in Gran Alacant and was happy to pick us up on route to the Dive Centre 10 minutes away in Santa Pola. We were teamed up with a mixed group of English and Dutch families and after putting on our wetsuits (mostly back to front) fins and masks (scuba divers frown on them being called flippers and goggles apparently) and headed off to the island on the taxi speedboat. After arriving on Tabarca, Jake our ‘divemaster’ gave us a quick brief on how to put the gear on correctly, safety procedures and marine life we were likely to see. The first site we visited was called the black skull a small rock island about 100 meters from shore. Initially the water is only 1 to 2 meters deep which was great for the kids to gain confidence and the wetsuits actually helped them float. As soon as your mask breaks the surface you can see literally thousands of fish much to the kids and big kids delight. Around the back of the black skull the water is a little bit deeper and the more adventurous amongst us were ‘duck diving’ to the octopus holes Jake expertly spotted. After a quick break we headed to another site and went in the limestone caves, I was a little apprehensive about this at first but the caves turned out to be breath taking and not at all claustrophobic. Again the marine life was spectacular and the water as clear as a swimming pool. We headed back on the boat about 2pm with a boat load of smiley, tired kids and adults alike. It was a great day rounded of nicely with a cold drink in Marina Miramar.

Dive Academy runs Snorkel Safaris on Tues, Thurs and Saturdays. Tel 965 414 510 or 648 463 310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

A REVAMPED ROAD and POSSIBLY “A NEW SCHOOL ON THE WAY” The inauguration took place on August 17 th of the rejuvinated pathways and landscaping of the road “Mediterraneo”

The Vice-President, Pepe Císcar, of the Valencian Government was there to be part of the speeches, where he announced that many areas of Valencia had applied for new schools to be built, but due to the economy, they have had to prioritise and that Gran Alacant were at the moment 2nd on this list. He said that there may be good news about this in the near future.

The Mayor offered Sandra and Myself the opportunity of a photo with him and the Vice President. We were happy to oblige!!!!!!

NEW TREATMENTS

Last month we wrote about vaccinal side effects, and we concentrated mostly on Leishmaniasis vaccine. This vaccine has been probably one of the biggest innovations in Veterinary science in these last years. It looks like itʼs getting more and more difficult to innovate in this area, so the fact of launching a really new (and revolutionary) medicine, is becoming more and more uncommon. For example, most antibiotics which are introduced as completely new drugs, are just small biochemical modifications of pre-existing molecules, so every lab can be “proud of having its own antibiotic”. Something similar happens with antiinflammatories. Lately, there is a kind of “quest for taste”, for making oral medicines more tasty, which implies, of course, a better acceptance. One of the areas in which we can see real improvements based on really new molecules, are, no doubt, antiparasitic medicines (here I would like to say that Parasitology, parasitic diseases, and antiparasitic treatments, is probably the only area which is much more advanced in Vet science than in human Medicine). These last years we have seen the appearance of lots of new medicines more efficient, easier and more comfortable to give, longer lasting, and water-proof. For example, now we have a new tablet that kills fleas, larvae and eggs for one month, and itʼs really efficient (much more than classical spot-on insecticides), and free of side effects. Its disadvantages are: only for dogs, doesn`t cover ticks or mosquito, and, of course, the price. For this reason, we only use it when anything else has failed. Another good example would be a new antiparasitic collar that covers everything: fleas, ticks and mosquito… in dogs and cats!!! At last they found an antiticks- and-mosquito molecule which is not toxic for cats. The problem, once again, is the price, but in this case is not a very big problem, because the collar is expensive, but it lasts for 8 months, which is a very long time. We are using it in our dog, and, so far, we havenʼt seen any parasite on him. This collar is a very good alternative to spot-on insecticides for those animals which love swimming (you can take it off and put it back after the bath. Preventing mosquito bites in cats is important, because they are a important source of allergies in cats. By the way, the latest articles say catching Leishmaniosis is quite uncommon in cats, but not impossible. We must remark again that the best way to choose the ideal antiparasitic treatment for our animal considering the weight, if it lives indoors or outdoors, if it goes swimming very often, if it is sensitive or allergic, if we have one or more pets…, is asking the Vet. He will suggest the best option taking all those things into account (and, of course, the status of the economy of the owner). If we take a wrong decision, we might be wasting a lot of money. Which is new in some other medicines is the presentation: easy-to-break tablets for heart disease, spot-on on worming treatments, and even relaxing collars for dogs, which have a pheromone produced by lactating bitches. These collars start releasing the pheromone when they warm up by contacting the skin of the animal. A typical indication of this collar would be when moving to a new home, being put on kennels, a trip, etc. The same pheromone is also available as a diffuser (similar to home electric anti-mosquito devices). Another new treatment for relaxing distressed animals is a new pill which can be used for long periods of time (up to 2 months), and relaxes the dog without making it get sleepy, because itʼs not a drug. Itʼs a very useful medicine for preventing the panic caused by fireworks. Finally, lots of new (and efficient) medicinal shampoos are available now for treating allergic problems, sensitive or dry skin, etc.

62

Thereʼs a Tiger on the loose in Spain! Donʼt panic, because this one wonʼt chew off your head – in fact, you will enjoy seeing it over the next few months when they are fairly common in our area, and you can get up close and personal with them, they are very easy to photograph as long as you donʼt make any sudden movements. Itʼs the Plain Tiger butterfly, known as the Mariposa Tigre in Spanish, and it appears in the Clot from September through to early December, although it can also be seen from May onwards in fewer numbers. We are fortunate that we are right in the centre of the restricted Spanish population, as it is normally confined by to the Eastern Costal area from Barcelona in the north down to Sevilla in the south. The species ranges from Mark Etheridge the Mediterranean coasts, through Africa and across to India and Southeast Asia, and is one of the worldʼs commonest butterflies. It is also one of the most distinctive Spanish butterflies due to its large size and colouration, and is related to the similar-looking American Monarch butterfly – hence its alternative name of African Monarch. They are partial migrants – some will fly down to North Africa for the winter, but it is known that others spend the whole of their lives here, and why not as Iʼm sure you will agree. Why Plain Tiger? It is closely related to the Common Tiger butterfly of India, which has the typical Tiger stripe pattern, but ours has a clearer orange upperwing as can be seen in my photos. The underside is slightly less colourful, but still very distinctive. The caterpillars of this species are multi striped white, yellow and black, and have 6 very distinctive, upwards pointing, black spines set in 3 pairs. You might think that being so brightly coloured would put this butterfly at a disadvantage with regard to predators, but like some other insects such as wasps, the vivid colours serve as a warning sign. As a caterpillar, it feeds on plants which give it an alkaloid which will cause vomiting in any predator that attacks it, and when it becomes a butterfly it flies slowly and leisurely at a low level, in a straight line thus giving a would-be predator plenty of time to recognize and avoid attacking it. It also has a tough leathery body to survive occasional attacks from inexperienced predators, and it will fake death and ooze a nauseating liquid to make it smell and taste terrible – thus it appears to have the ability to recover from attacks which would kill most other butterflies. Images of this beautifully bright butterfly have been found in an Egyptian tomb which was built 3,500 years ago, making it the first ever butterfly to be recorded in history.

WHAT’S THAT?

IN THE CLOT?

See you next month.
