Hello and welcome to the start of the sixth year of our magazine. Five years and sixty monthly editions completed, and all on time, never late once!! something we are very proud of.

We must thank our local printer for all of his help during this period. It is Bailen at Santa Pola, where, if you ever need anything printed, you will find them most helpful and professional.

So many people and businesses have helped in our achievement and we thank you all.

In Loreto the local Councillor and the Town Hall, we have always had nothing but help and courtesy with anything we have required from them.

After spending 9 months helping to start up “Jungledrums”, we, in January 2005 produced our first “Advertiser”. In black ink on blue paper as shown on the facing page.

The idea being to advertise household goods. But.......it grew and grew, more pages, going to full colour, making the format bigger, until where we are today.

After entering the print trade as an 18 year old apprentice, back in 1963, never did I think that I would end up in Spain, still in print.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.

Three areas of the Santa Pola beaches have seen small copses of trees planted. Also along the coast road to Santa Pola, fence work is being erected. This should cause many parking problems when the summer months come. Santa Pola Council tell us that this work has been asked for by the landowners (Coastal Authorities) of these strips of land. This means that the Council cannot get their vehicles onto the beaches to keep them clean and tidy.

The main story this month, apart from our 5th anniversary!!, is the completion of Gran Alacant’s first park. Loreto took us into the Park so that we could take pictures for this months edition. The official opening by Loreto and the Mayor, will take place on the 7th February at 12 noon . We will of course have pictures of that in our March edition. We have pictures of the park in this magazine.

We have had a very good response to last months article about allotments. Many of you have contacted us and put forward names. If you are still considering the possibility of having an allotment on Gran Alacant, there is still plenty of time to ring or email us at the magazine to put your name forward. The idea is definitely to go ahead and a location area is under consideration.

The pine trees that have died along side all of the new pavements are being replaced with new, non pine, trees. The cost of this has been bourne by the company who planted them, not the Town Hall.

We know next Christmas is a long way

off, but we were asked if more could be provided on Gran Alacant for children next year. When we spoke to Loreto about this she said to make an appointment with her and she would be happy to discuss ideas with you.

On a similar thread, again we were asked if some kind of youth club could be organised on our Urbanisation. Loreto says that this is already in hand. Many parents have mentioned the idea to her. A room at the Life Resort is to be used to start up the idea in early Frbruary to see how it goes. If it then needs to expand, bigger premises will be sought.

The swimming pool in Santa Pola is 85% finished, but now at a standstill. The builder has gone bust and the Council are trying to find a way out to complete the project.

You will all have no doubt noticed that the train has now ceased to operate. The new one should be up and running for early March. The bus still continues to use the same route, every half an hour.

The landscaping of the Clot is now virtually finished and the next big project will be the re-location of the market. Much paperwork has to be completed before it can be started.

The Santa Pola 1/2 marathon ran on the weekend of the 23/24th January. There were 1,000 entrants for the childrens run on the Saturday and 6,800 for the adults

on the Sunday. The Council are making big efforts each year to make this a multinational race, and advertising by the Town Hall, took place in many well know athlete magazines. The event is now the second biggest in the whole of Spain, just behind Madrid and in front of Valencia. A big achievement for the area.

Yet again we talked about the area on the left when you go down the beach road hill. This untidy area is covered in rubbish and dogs mess as one of the emails to us describes.

You will see in our email section, more anger about dog mess. Already at the new clot walkway the area is covered. It really is becoming a massive problem.

Signs do not seem to work. Perhaps the only answer is someone paid to watch and photograph these people. Remember that it is not the dog, it is the owner.

Elche Town Hall are talking of building a watersports centre between the beaches of Arenales and Carabasi beach.

Hopefully it could be ready for this summer, providing windsurfing, sailing, and kite surfing. This may help to attract holiday makers to local rentals and hotels.

On the 23rd January we were at the official opening of the wonderfully revamped Santa Pola football stadium. As the mag is full this month, we will bring you pictures in our next edition.

Welcome everyone to February’s Beauty page.

Following on from January’s edition, Other Complementary Therapies.

(Please note I do not practice the following therapies) Osteopathy - Like chiropractor, an osteopath manipulates the joints of the body. They work on the basis that the body’s structure and function are interdependent. If the structure is damaged in any way then this will affect its function. By manipulating joints and bones they can correct structural problems which will improve the body’s function.

Physiotherapy - Physiotherapy uses physical exercises, massage and the application of pressure to relieve physical pain and muscular tension. It is often used to re educate the body in cases of major surgery, illness or in the event of an accident.

Shiatsu. - Shiatsu is a form of acupressure. The use of fingers or thumb pressure on points along the meridians (energy channels) to help relieve pain and encourage the body to heal itself. The pressure points are the same as those used in acupuncture.

Yoga/Meditation - Both Yoga and Meditation have long been known to have beneficial, holistic effects and are useful self-help therapies. They teach you to have control of your body and mind. Yoga does this through physical exercise, including adopting different postures, relaxation techniques and breathing exercises. Meditation uses different focuses (such as visualization, a candle or a mantra) to help the person find calm and a sense of their own centre. Meditation has the physiological effects of a short sleep, i.e. the body goes into a healing and recharging mode it adopts when we sleep, allowing your muscles to relax and your circulation to become more effective.

SELLING PROPERTY IN SPAIN IN 2010 It goes without saying that properties are not selling as quickly as they were. Everyone can see that.

There is however, a glimpse of hope for those selling and returning to the UK. Your property may be worth more than you think.

Take this example if you bought your property in 2004/5/6 you are likely to have got 1,45€ for each Pound. So if you bought your house for 300,000 euros it cost you £206,900.

You know you can´t get 300,000€ for your property but you would get 250,000€ at todays exchange rate of 1.12 that gives you £223,214.28 which basically gives you a profit of £16314.28.

Had the pound against the euro remained the same then you would clearly be running at a loss.

The fact is it hasn´t can work to your advantage but only if you are returning to the UK. Don´t just look at the value in euros look at the conversion back to sterling.

For those selling and wishing to remain in Spain again be realistic. If the price of your property has come down, then so has the one you might like to buy! Yes everyone is looking for a bargain, but if a buyer wants a bargain with you why shouldn´t you have one on another property.

Commonsense is prevailing in the property market, we have more sales and purchases going through than at any other time even when the market was buoyant.

To us this points to two things. Firstly, buyers and sellers alike are using Lawyers to protect their interest, and secondly, people are still buying houses!!

For those unable to sell their property and who have a mortgage but are struggling, try and renegotiate your mortgage payment period with the Bank. You may find that they are rather more accommodating than they were!

Have just read one of the local free papers and there is an article regarding IBERDROLA they are saying we have to get in touch to register at one of their dedicated outlets (whereever they may be) failer to do so results in 20% charge added to our monthly bills .I thought you would like to know and inform expats and others that live in Spain all year round.

Christine Hi, Received your email since sending the above to you there has been another 3 articles in different english free newspapers, so my husband went to the information office today with the articles from todays leader she phoned iberdrola straight away with my husband looking on and they informed her it is only people that are claiming social have to reregister their contract I think somebody should tell the free newspapers to check the information given to them and to make sure they have all the information explaining so we know what is going on not half the information and causing panic to their readers. As I had already stated this information comes from the electricity company involved. I hope this helps your readers so they can stop panicking.

Hi Barry & Sandra, Firstly we'd like to express our interest in an allotment - we do miss the garden we had before moving here.

Also, can we just say that the area you mention going down the hill towards the beach is getting worse. We ourselves don't live opposite so thankfully don't have to look at it, but we do feel really sorry for those who do. We do, however, walk our dog daily and can see that the area is being used more and more as a dumping ground and as a doggy toilet by people who don't use doggy bags. As you can imagine the smell from it, particularly in the warm weather, can be really horrible - why do people assume because it's waste land that they don't have to 'pick up'? We've taken several photos this morning of the area and attach herewith.

Hi to everybody, Well in February, apart from the cold weather we are having there are specials things to do like, once again, Moors and Christians parades, they are held in Sax 1st to 5th , Bocairent also 1st to 5th , Ibi 6th to 8th and Xixona 20th 24rd . Do never forget that these are dates of reference if you go, please check first at the Tourist Info the best day to go.

Another activity in February are Carnivals, all Towns along the Costa Blanca celebrate Carnivals, I recommend the one held in Torrevieja. However, if you really want to see something different you should go to see the one held in Aguilas, a bit further down from Cartagena.

To finish I would like to talk about the almond blossom, the inland becomes certainly pretty, almost everybody knows Jalon valley or Guadalest valley but not too many people know my favourite, which in my opinion is the most beautiful in the all Costa Blanca “El valle de la Seta�, I regularly phone to check to Facheca or Famorca and they tell me when it is in its full splendour because nature has no dates, it could be beginning, middle or end of the month who knows with such a cold weather but it is worth going there.

But, By the time I got my leotards on, The class was over.

Paddy, the electrician, got sacked from the U.S. prison service for not servicing the electric chair.

Santa Pola Football Club The story of the turn of the year

December 2009..... ....saw Santa Pola compete in just two games, both of which occurred immediately before Christmas. The visit of Alfaz del Pi gave local Preferente fans one last opportunity to cheer on their favourites. A decent sized crowd was well entertained and left happy as Santa Pola sauntered to a routine 2-0 win to maintain their place in the top five.

A week later, a difficult fixture on the plastic pitch in Alguena took on a little extra importance, as well as being the final league game of the year; it matched up the teams in third and fourth place in the table. A memorable day out in a very agreeable small village in the mountains was somewhat spoilt by the football, Alguena ran out three nil winners, assisted by some very rugged tackling that knocked Santa Pola completely out of their stride. Fifth place in the table was where the Marineros ended 2009, a very satisfactory effort.

And on into 2010.... ...with a very difficult opening game of the year at home to league leaders Horadada, who, up to this point had only lost once. Two late, late Horadada goals extended that record as they beat a plucky Santa Pola who gave their guests a terrific game. One very relieved visiting supporter from Pilar suggested that was the hardest game Horadada had played and a 0-2 defeat didn’t do justice to the Santa Pola performance.

The following Saturday Santa Pola made the short journey to San Vicente, where they took on and beat Jove Español B by a single goal scored by left full back Dani. The game was notable for a gale force wind and a temperature that barely crept above zero all afternoon, the travelling supporters, who nearly outnumbered the home fans, were rewarded with all three points. That game incidentally, ensured Santa Pola had now

played each of the divisions other seventeen teams.

Next, and for the second week in a row Santa Pola were away, this time they travelled to Albatera, the team against whom they started their season way back in September. Despite scoring first, ‘Pola were pegged back and the teams ended up one apiece at the finish. With luck, lowly Albatera will continue to struggle and end up being relegated. In such a competitive but still very friendly league, they stick out like a sore thumb by the manner in which their club officials and supporters treat visiting teams.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR TOWN HALL in SANTA POLA to the people of SANTA POLA and GRAN ALACANT.

CAMPAIGN OF AWARENESS ABOUT CLEANLINESS At this time we are going to talk about establishments which take up public places, such as areas outside cafés, restaurants, bars, kiosks or street stalls.

We would like to remind you that keeping those areas clean is compulsory, without leftovers of any kind on the ground which are spread by the wind or a brush. That creates a bad image of the business and so of our streets that nobody wants to have, even less living in a touristic town where image must be looked after among all of us. We know that there are establishments which keep their areas perfectly clean, as it is established in our municipal cleaning ordinance. For those who do not, let’s remind what our ordinance says in articles 14 and 15: Art. 14: Every activity which may make public spaces dirty, whatever place they are being carried out and without prejudice to the necessary licenses or authorisations, demands that the owners take appropriate measures to prevent it, cleaning all the parts affected and removing any waste.

Art. 15: The holders of establishments such as bars, cafés, kiosks or street stalls are forced to keep their own installations and the public space affected in appropiate conditions. The town council can demand these holders to put officially approved elements for rubbish, whose maintenance falls to the owners.

It is also important that these establishments transport their rubbish in watertight containers to prevent from staining the road when moving to the bins. Liquids must not be thrown to avoid bad smell and dirtiness in the bins. It is forbidden to deposit cartons outside the containers, as well as other packagings. Regarding that, our ordinance says in its articles 6 and 8: Art. 6: Rubbish must be deposited in closed bags and containing only solid waste.

Art. 8: Citizens must not hinder loading and unloading in the areas where bins are located.

Otherwise, the municipal authority will fine that behaviour.

Users are forced to deposit rubbish inside the containers.

Finally, let’s remind how important is not to throw oils in wastepipes, since one litre of oil contaminates 10,000 litres of water, so treatment costs are substantially increased.

Art. 16: Used oils must be collected by an authorised agent. The holders of the establishments must keep the receipt of the collection done by the agent.

We have a rubbish site where oils can be deposited (by individuals or establishments).

Free containers are available at an enterprise located in polígono industrial (Reciclajes alimentarios, 965411060).

On Saturday and Sunday 20th and 21st of February, some of the country’s finest bowlers will descend on Gran Alacant, in an attempt to win the Monte Mar - Bancaja Open Cup.

There were excellent wins today for the teams skipped by Alan Ashberry and David Eades, but sadly the other four rinks lost tight games and we therefore lost 4 rinks to 2.

We did, however, win the overall shots points, so well done to our

winning teams and hard luck to the others, but congrats for keeping going with the shot total. There is always next week.

Twenty-four teams and ninety-six bowlers will commence battle for this prestigious trophy and considerable cash prizes, and for the next two days are split into four leagues playing five matches against each other.

The four winners of each league progress to the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon, and the winners of these semis’ onto the final.

Before the final, there will be a playoff for third and fourth place, followed by the final and prize presentation.

If you fancy watching the best Spain has to offer, come along to the Monte Mar Bowls Club, behind Super Valu, you never know you may find that bowls has far more to offer than just ‘being an old man’s game.

A REMINDER FOR PETS OWNERS In this month article we want to remind you some important things which are not directly related to your pet’s health, but it’s useful to know them.

An antibodies blood test is required for travelling to the UK. The blood sample must be collected at least 4 weeks after the last rabies injection, and after that moment, it takes 6 months to the passport to get valid. So, the whole process takes 7 months, if everything goes OK, from the moment you decide to start.

After that, we will keep the passport valid by doing an annual rabies injection. It’s very important doing the injection before the previous one expires (in the Comunidad Valenciana, for example, rabies injection is valid for one year). Otherwise, the passport is no longer valid for the UK and you have to start from zero again.

There are other countries with similar (but NOT equal) requirements for importing pets

than the UK: for example, the weeks you have to wait after the last rabies injection for the blood sampling may vary in other countries, so a passport which is valid for the UK might not be valid for Sweden and Norway, and the pet may be stopped at the border.

A similar case would be travelling to most non-EU countries: no special requirements for taking the animal out of the EU (just rabies and microchip), but a rabies antibodies blood test will be required for the re-entry in the EU (and this implies EVERY EU country, even Spain, not only the UK), so if this is your case, you’d better have the animal tested before you go, because finding an official, EU-approved immunology lab may be virtually impossible in most Third World countries. If the animal has never been tested, it will be stopped at the European customs facilities till the quarantine is finished (in case of the UK, six months), and, of course, we will be obliged to pay for the time the animal spends at those facilities.

anywhere we wish to go. Rabies blood test is not expensive, and revaccinating every year we keep it valid for life.

Nowadays we are seeing lots of cases of people who want to go back quickly to the UK, and some of them didn’t know rabies blood test and 6 months quarantine is mandatory. There is absolutely nothing a Vet can do for shortening this process, and this is the reason because we recommend everybody to have the animal ready to travel: you’ll never know if in the future you will need to return quickly to the UK. Another important thing we would like to remind you is the microchips registration: a pet with a British microchip which has never been registered at the European or Comunidad Valenciana database can be considered a non-identified animal, because there is practically no way to find the owner in these conditions. It’s easy to check at home if our pet is been registered in these database: just visit these websites: www.rivia.org (Comunidad Valenciana) and www.europetnet.com (European). The same microchip may be registered in more than one database. Besides, if the pet is been registered in rivia.org, typing the microchip number and owner’s ID number, you’ll be able to check all the details, download a form for correcting or updating them, and also let the database know the pet has got lost or

robbed. Updating microchip details, or registering here a foreign microchip (which just implies filling in a form, not removing the old microchip and doing a new one), can be done by every authorized Vet, not only by the one who chipped the animal.

Sometimes we find chipped animals whose owner is impossible to find because the details (telephone number!!) are wrong, or the microchip hasn’t been registered in an international database. In this case, there is nothing we can do. If nobody claims for the animal within the following days, he is considered an abandoned animal. If you are not sure of the legal condition of your animal, just ask the Vet, and if necessary he will register the microchip at the local database.

Finally, we would just like to remind you microchip is mandatory in dogs, and from this summer, tattoos are no longer considered a valid, official identification method.

birds, but then there are those sneaky species which look a bit like one thing, but is actually another.

We’re not looking at ducks this month but at a rather smaller bird which looks a bit like a Robin.

Everyone knows the Robin, there are plenty of them in the Clot at this time of the year, and it’s one of the easiest birds to identify because there’s always a picture of one on the Christmas card from Auntie Mabel. Robins have been estimated by one authoritative survey (well actually a very dubious internet site which I googled just now) to feature in no less than 17% of all the cards sent at Christmas, so you are

probably fairly sure that a little chubby bird which looks like a Robin is actually a Robin.

But hang on a minute – Robins have red breasts, don’t they? What’s this one doing with a blue chest then?

That’s because it is a Bluethroat, or Pechiazul Comun in Spanish, and a smart little thing it is too. Related to the Robin in a second-cousin-twiceremoved kind of way, at the moment you will be seeing them in their absolute best bib and tucker, as they get ready to move north from their winter quarters here on the Costa Blanca to North Spain and further afield in Europe and on into the wild steppes of Siberia. They will be lurking in and around the reedbeds in the Clot, feeding on mozzies and other assorted insects, setting themselves up for their long journey, and by the end of March you won’t see them back here until next October.

My picture shows one with a white spot in the centre of its blue bib, but they also come in a red-spotted version; this is enough to get your average visiting British birder all a-quiver with excitement as he will only ever see Bluethroats on migration through the UK, and he has to be extremely lucky (and in the right place) to do that.

I met a Spanish birdwatcher in the Clot last year, and when I pointed out to him that there was a Bluethroat flitting about in front of the new hide, he was very dismissive – “muy comun”, he said scornfully, but he became very interested when I told him about the birds I have seen back in Britain. It just goes to show that one man’s Tesco is another man’s Mercadona, and you might say that the Bluethroat is the equivalent of Manchego cheese – very difficult to come by in the UK.
