Hello,

What terrible news with the passing of “Frank” from Flannagans. Our hearts go out to the family. What a wonderful turn out at the funeral, so many people from GA, showing just how many people liked “Frank”. Our brilliant front cover picture this month, was supplied to us by Robin Bonathan, capturing the firework display last month in Alicante.

Hope everyone who went to the Gran Alacant Fiestas enjoyed themselves. There was certainly a good turn out. Another new feature starts this month. We will be following the fortunes of Santa Pola Football Club throughout the coming season. Read this months introductory report from Kevin Randell. Please support the club in the coming seasons fixtures and who knows, maybe a player from the Gran Alacant team may one day progress to join Santa Pola F.C. Try to stay cool and enjoy the month.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.

The people of Gran Alacant said, “can we have some trees?” and we got trees!! hundreds of them!! In fact almost a 4 kilometer length of

the school and the GA centre, is not to be a bowling alley or similar. No news on a starting date for the golf course. Work on the closing in of the sports centre has started, meaning that everything will be able to take place under cover, in the shade, with a new playing surface.

pavement and trees. Stretching from the school, to the GA centre roundabout and on up the hill to the post office. What a scene it will be when they are all in leaf, We did ask, “no caterpillar pine trees please” and so all of the trees planted are “tipuanas”, nice shady leafy trees with yellow flowers. There will be benches provided along these pavements. There have been problems with the old trees from the GA Centre roundabout to the post office, where they were originally planted on top of water pipes. This has slowed down some of the work, but all is now sorted. As we go to print the next train provider has not been decided upon. By the time you read this, you will probably know the new operator. The new supermarket being built between

Meetings have taken place between the Town Hall and Baile buses, to improve all of the bus stops on the urbanisation. If at the stops there is room, a proper stop with seating will be made. A collaboration between the Town Hall and the Association de Vecinos Residents of Europe are to provide a moonlight supper on the evening of August 6th, behind the library. This is the evening that a full moon will be in the sky and each person will be asked to bring their own food. Tell your family and friends to contact the association and book a table and chairs for a small donation. Tel: 609 932 578. Gran Alacants first park should be underway next month. The company to do the work has been chosen.. Also starting in August, the new walkway all along El Clot . This is yet another large

project beginning. Many of the new projects have to be finished by a certain date or the final funding will not be given. This is why some of the projects have had to be underway during rather inconvenient times. You may have seen council workmen going around Gran Alacant taking down all of the untidy and unsightly posters that people have put up and not taken down. One small poster has been put in its place, explaining that, any posters found on posts or walls will receive a telephone call to the number on the poster, and the person concerned will receive a fine.. Yet again we discussed the land in front of the houses on the left as you go down the beach from the post office roundabout. Masa have in the past had a go at tidying it and will do so again. It is of course, NOT Masa that are causing its untidyness, nor indeed the TOWN Hall, but the problem is caused by some people on Gran Alacant and it is their responsibility not to keep spreading rubbish around. We will be meeting the person at the Town Hall next month, in charge of the World Windsurfing Championships, to give you more information in our September issue about what we can hope to see at this prestigious event. We were told at the meeting that there may be even more news of more projects to come in the future. We will of course, bring you news of them once we know ourselves.

area around carabasi, are not in any future plans, but will be under consideration in the future. Regards the re-routing of Baile buses. Of course the Town Hall have no influence over this, and the bus companys leaflets would have to be changed. It might be a good idea to pop into Baile buses office and ask if this change in service could be possible. Other News You will see that we have had more emails this month about our beach, Carabasi Beach. This beach, as others between it, and towards Alicante come under the Elche Council. They as Santa Pola, have been allocated money from the government which they are to put into the upgrading of their beach facilities. Carabasi beach will remain closed off as there were serious problems last summer when the ambulance could not get down the road to a very serious casualty. Work will begin on a raised walkway and other facilities. It may seem an odd time of the year for much of this work to be carried out, but the various councils in the area have a deadline for all work to be completed, or they will not receive the subsidy. We are assured by one of the beach hut owners, that it will all be worth while when we see the future improvements. How nice to see on a Sunday, the bin lorry doing its rounds and the road sweeping men and ladies doing their best to keep everywhere tidy.

The email to us about the possibility of a bus station on GA and also a childrens

SEX IN SANTA POLA CITY! Regular readers of the Advertiser will have been following the progress of GASP!, Gran Alacant's new amateur theatre group. First they set about the task of hacking their way through Spanish bureaucracy in order to set up Santa Pola's first English speaking official Association (“with

the brilliant assistance of Loreto Cascales and her colleagues at Santa Pola council!” explained GASP 's Secretary David Ashley thankfully), then they chose a play and got rehearsals under way, and now they've selected the charities who will benefit from their money-raising efforts from this production. So we went along to a rehearsal to see how they're getting on …. The play they're working on, “Habeas Corpus” is described as “a riotous comedy by Alan Bennett”. Roger Keevil, the President of the group, who is also directing the

production, told us “It's a shame the title makes it look as if it's some sort of legal drama. Nothing could be further from the truth!” In fact, the play is a very funny send-up of the Permissive Society of the 1970s, and the whole thing's about everybody's obsession with sex - who's been getting it, who hasn't, and the scandalous revelations that result from all the naughty goings-on. From the fun that the cast were having at rehearsal, as our photos show, the subjects of illicit sex, boob-feeling, and unexpected babies look set to provide plenty of laughs for the audience. “Not that there's anything crude or distasteful,” Roger hastened to assure us. “The humour is pitched very much at the level of the CarryOn films of the time or a saucy seaside postcard, with a few dropped trousers for good measure!” “Habeas Corpus” will

be performed at Santa Pola's Casa de Cultura Theatre in Calle Elche (we'll be adding the location to the map of Santa Pola at the back of the magazine) on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November 2009. Tickets will be on sale from September from G.A. Homefinders in Gran Alacant and from OPI Rentals in Gran Alacant and La Marina, as well as from members of GASP! For more information about GASP!, phone 966 695 043 or email gasp.theatre@gmail.com.

Santa Pola Football Club President-Jose Manuel Gonzalez and below Kevin Rendall pictures courtesy of Mark Welton

Resident in and around Santa Pola for over four years and a lifelong football nutcase I first began watching Santa Pola in 2006 and was immediately taken by the friendliness of the club and the kindness of the people involved with it. For a year or so I wrote of goings on in and around Santa Pola in another local publication, these days my literary efforts are now compiled for The Leader newspaper, for whom I describe Santa Pola matches, home and away. Recently I was privileged to be invited to join the new Board of Directors of Santa Pola FC, an opportunity I gratefully accepted. Over the coming months, and thanks to the generosity of Barry and Sandra, I’ll be bringing news and views from inside the club to the Gran Alacant Advertiser readership in a serious of regular monthly columns. Kevin Rendall

An introduction to Santa Pola Club de Futbol................By Kevin Rendall Founded: 1980 - an amalgamation of UD Santa Pola and Athletico Santa Pola Home ground: Estadio Municipal Manolo Macia - Avenida Albacete, Santa Pola. Capacity: 3500 (1000 seated) Club colours: Red/White shirts, Blue shorts, Red socks. League status: Group 4 - Valencian Regional Preferente Manager: Domingo Grau President: Jose Manuel Gonzalez Rivas Barely six weeks after their last competitive outing at the conclusion of the 2008/09 season, Santa Pola CF returned to pre season training in the final week of July. Much has changed in that short space of time with the election of a new board of directors, major development work at the clubs home ground, one or two new faces on the playing staff and regular starters from last year leaving the club to seek football challenges elsewhere. Once again Santa Pola will start their 2009/10 campaign in group 4 of the Valencian Preferente; seeking promotion to the National third division, which itself is divided into eighteen regional sections. From early September to mid May 2010, Santa Pola will take on teams from around the southern Costa Blanca from Horadada to Orihuela and up to Altea and El Campello north of Alicante. As always at the start of a new season hopes are high, this year the optimism surrounding the club doesn’t appear to be misplaced. In his first month in charge, new club President Jose Manuel Gonzalez has appointed Domingo Grau, himself no stranger to success, to the position of first team coach. As recently as 2005, a Grau inspired Santa Pola narrowly failed in their quest for promotion from the Tercera (third) division to the Segunda B (Second division B), just one tier beneath that in which the big boys of Hercules Alicante and Elche ply their trades. Already fantastically well supported locally, with crowd sizes regularly comparing well with the best in the division, Gran Alacant, an integral part of the greater Santa Pola community can play its part too. A warm welcome is assured for British fans, who are actively encouraged to come along to lend their support to a football club noted for an attractive, passing style that at times last year had spectators purring. Prior to the start of Preferente hostilities in September, Santa Pola will take on local opposition including Torrellano, Elche Ilicitano and Torrevieja in crucial pre-season friendlies to fine tune preparations and their match fitness. For more details of forthcoming games, season tickets or match by match entrance prices, call Kevin on 650 594 112, or, alternatively email kevin.rendall@telefonica.net I hope to see you there.

The location of both of the above businesses can be seen on our map on page 12 The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted it on the apple tray:

'Take only ONE. God is watching.'

Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note,

'Take all you want. God is watching the apples.'

What would happen if one of us dies in Spain Ask yourselves these questions:

1. Would you know who to call in the first place? 2. Would they know the Spanish system on funerals? 3. Would they be able to cope with local laws and regulations in Spain? 4. Normally funerals are held within 48hr´s. Would family have time to get here? 5. Would funds be readily available to cover all costs? 6. Could you cope with the above at the time of great stress? If you can not answer even one of these questions positively then one of your Priorities should be to contact SPN today for more information about fixed cost Funeral plans

Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving. John was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry. She told him 'Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in less than 10 seconds, AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!' The next morning John got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. John has been missing since Friday. Please pray for him

Hello welcome to the next installment of Massage. Indian Head Massage. Indian head massage has been used for thousands of years to treat the mind and body. In India Ayurvedic and traditional medicine is as important as orthodox medicine. It aims to treat the whole body so as to maintain a balance between the physical, mental and spiritual. Indian head massage uses and adapts classic Swedish massage techniques for treating the scalp, face, neck and shoulders. It is extremely good and effective for treating stress because it works on the areas of the body most affected e.g. shoulders, upper back, neck and head. In both my full body massages and the half body massage, I always’ include a head, neck and face massage as head massage has a number of benefits which include, increased joint mobility and flexibility in your neck, arms and shoulders. It reduces tension in the tissue, making them more flexible which minimizes stress on bones and joints. It improves circulation removes waste in particular Lactic Acid. Petrissage movements on the neck and shoulders

helps reduce tension, releases tightness in overworked and tense muscles. Stress reduction helps prevent stress induced muscle spasm in the back, neck and shoulders.

Buttock Massage and Exfoliation Do you want a bottom like all the models? Then a buttock and exfoliation is the answer. This treatment consists of a 20 minute workout on the muscles in your buttock, (Gluteus Medius, Gluteus Minimus and Gluteus Maximus) followed by a 10 minute exfoliation of the skin to remove all the dead cells. Clients who have had this treatment have stated that they felt their buttocks were uplifted and felt clean afterwards.

Sports Massage. (This is not a treatment that I do) Sports massage combines the use of Swedish massage with additional more intensive techniques for the prevention and treatment of sports injuries. It can be used as part of a training program to help prevent injury, as part of a warm up for an event such as a marathon and also as a cool down after an event. Like other forms of massage, sport massage helps improve suppleness and

Boat Museum The Mayor Miguel Zaragoza visited the work of the school workshop on the boat Museum Esteban González located in the square of the Constitution, facing the consistorial House and next to the fishing port entry to monitor jobs that are being carried out at the school workshop for its adequacy as boat museum which reflect the fishing tradition of Santa Pola.

Miguel Zaragoza was accompanied by the Director of the boat and school teachers workshop, all experts specialists in the tasks of carpentry, electromechanical and painting from the shipbuilding sector of the town. Seeing the advances being made in the bridge, the cabins, the engine room. The engine has been restored from a totally artisan process. The Mayor has praised the work of the students who are learning a profession with support in the village and possibilities of labour integration: we have seen on the visit the good progress rehabilitation of fisheries Esteban González, sensitive by its special complexity but whose fruits are already

being realised. "When within a few months of the museum being completed and the boat is complete we can show the santapoleros and visitors a very real approximation of what is was like on board one of these vessels". The Mayor stressed "the important tourist and cultural attraction at the boat Museum, that will change its face completely, offering spaces of leisure for children and older persons, with landscaping, lighting appropriate to the environment and, ultimately, a large area for a walk to embellish our seafront further". A total of 36 students form part of the workshop, which started in December 2008 to train them for two years in the fields of masonry, carpentry, electromechanical and painting. The most emblematic draft anticipated during training practices of the boat Museum, consists of total rehabilitation of the fisheries, its musealisation and commissioning value that can be visited, and after the direct work of some 20 pupils who daily developed the work.

emails...answers on our news pages

Hi Barry and Sandra,

Your reply in the June edition to my letter (enquiring about the possibility of re-opening the pathway through El Clot), that this was an issue for Elche council rather than Santa Pola, raises a serious point about the development of Gran Alacant, that occasionally issues affecting our town will fall outside of the control of our elected representatives. How therefore do we address this?

As another example in addition to the El Clot pathway, I would draw attention to the poor state of the footpaths and indeed road on the approach to the beach. Although a major improvement has been made in the provision of additional car parking, the road through the sand dunes is a dust bowl. Is there no possibility of tarring this road and building proper footpaths that connect to the existing footpaths? The current situation is a danger to pedestrians as cars swerve to avoid the potholes and I do not accept that the current surfacing is more environmentally friendly. (I am now forced to use this route following the closure of the El Clot pathway.) Secondly, an issue for our council, are there any plans to build a bus station at the GA centre? Currently we have to travel to Santa Pola or Alicante and then change buses, which don't necessarily timetable conveniently, in order to travel onwards to Torrevieja, La Marina, Guardamar, Cartegena, Murcia etc. A bus station near the GA centre would encourage buses passing along the N332 to stop here thus increasing the accessibility of our town.

And with regards to the existing Alicante-Santa Pola Baile bus service, would it be possible for this service to use Avenida Noruega and Avenida Escandinava via the new roundabout providing stops along the way, instead of going along Avenida Mediterraneo which is unpopulated. Such a service while not inconveniencing anyone else on the existing route, would be much more convenient to the residents "down the hill" some of whom are over 25 minutes walk from the existing stop.

And finally, when if ever, can we expect a childrens play park to be built in the vicinity of the school or Carabasi complex? I was just thinking about paragraphs 1 and 2 and surely the point here is that while the councillors of Santa Pola Council have no direct control, they are nevertheless members of a politcal party which has members in the neighbouring council and so could raise our issues at party level and have the other councillors from Elche take it up on our behalf. I mean issues transcending council boundaries is not unique to Spain and surely that is how it would be dealt with back in the UK / Ireland. Fancy bringing it up with them and see what they have to say?

Also, someone told me they had heard a rumour that the new commercial building half way along Avenida Noruega (sort of opposite the new park) was actually going to be a cinema/bowling alley. I was sceptical and having walked past and had a nosey I'm unconvinced that the layout of the buidling would lend itself to such a use. Any inside knowledge you don't mind sharing? Cheers, Cormac

A mature lady gets pulled over for speeding... Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer? Traffic Cop: Yes ma'am, I'm afraid you were speeding. Older Woman: Oh, I see. Traffic Cop: Can I see your license please? Older Woman: Well, I would give it to you but I don't have one. Traffic Cop: Don't have one? Older Woman: No. I lost it 4 years ago for drunk driving. Traffic Cop: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please. Older Woman: I can't do that. Traffic Cop: Why not? Older Woman: I stole this car. Traffic Cop: Stole it? Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner. Traffic Cop: You what!? Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see The traffic cop looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car while calling for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun. Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle. Older woman: Is there a problem sir? Officer 2: My colleague here tells me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner. Older Woman: Murdered the owner? Are you serious?! Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please. The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk. Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am? Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The traffic cop is quite stunned. Officer 2: My colleague claims that you do not have a driving license. The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer. The officer examines the license quizzically. Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, but I am puzzled, as I was told by my officer here that you didn't have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner! Older Woman: Bet the lying bastard told you I was speeding, too.

Hi Barry

It was with interest, as always, that I read the July issue of the Advertiser

However I was a little disappointed not to see some update on the issue I had asked about previously

That is the eyesore that is at the end of our street Calle Canarias F32, the area opposite Frankieʼs Bar.

It is the open area that is being used as a toilet facility for it seems like every dog in GA.

It looks like there is a lot of improvements going on in GA at the moment which is wonderful but I donʼt think Masa are doing anything about clearing up/fencing off this area

Maybe I am wrong,it would be nice if I was, as I havenʼt been out since April but somehow I doubt it Could you make this a priority the next time you speak to Loreto and ask if she could put some pressure on Masa to do something

I know you are inundated with requests like this but if you could help at all I would be most grateful Kind Regards Fiona Hi Barry and Sandra Have you any idea if and when the access road to the carrabassi beach will be re opened,i know that it is in poor shape but for a lot of the not so young it is now an impossible trek to the beach which is a shame for those with walking difficulties, angina etc.Would it be too expensive to grade the road as was done a few years back and retain the new carpark as an overflow parking area.

My wife and l enjoy reading your Magazine every month and long may it continue. Cheers

Maggie & Chris

Dave The Computerman.

Welcome to the monthly computer column compiled by Dave the Computerman

Windows 7 Windows 7 is now available to download from the Microsoft website, and is available for testing. The official version will be made available on October 22nd 2009, and will begin to appear on new computers from this date. It is also possible to pre-order a copy from Amazon or PCWorld at hugely discounted prices, and I would recommend all users who wish to change to the new operating system to do so. Sadly there is no upgrade path from Windows XP, but Vista is upgradeable. This means that XP users will have to back up everything, format the disc and then install 7.

Google mail It is possible to access Google mail using outlook express using. Log into your account and click settings, then click the forwarding and pop tab. Enable pop for all mail. A copy of all your mail will be kept on Google’s servers as a backup in case of your computer failing. Click the configuration instructions link to find out how to connect to the Google mail pop server with your mail client and follow the instructions. You can check your other email accounts in Google mail as well. This allows you to centralise all your email accounts instead of signing in to them separately. Go to Settings/accounts and choose add another mail account. Fill in the “enter the email address” box with your email address, and click next. Google will enter the address details and then you must enter the password. Click add account. You can select to send mail from this address too. A verification email is sent to the

given email address and it is necessary for you to sign in to your old email address and follow the link. This will verify that you do indeed own the email address. If you are on a dialup connection, Google mail has a handy way of allowing you to write emails offline then synchronize your mail once you go online. To do this, enter Google mail and go to the settings link at the top right corner. Click on tabs and then click on enable offline Gmail for this computer. Download Gears as directed and this places a Gmail icon on the desktop. Use this link offline and Gmail will synchronize the next time that you go online. This makes emailing easy and a lot cheaper for dialup customers.

And Finally… Beware fake security software Criminals can make a fortune by fooling people into buying fake security software. To get people to the site hosting the rogue software, the cybercriminals use search engine optimisation techniques. They add misspelled keywords such as "licnese" or "obbama" into pages on compromised websites. Search engines index these pages and display them as top search results. Once the victim has been lured to a compromised site, they are redirected to the site offering the bogus software. Of the 1.8 million visitors who were redirected in one recent attack, around 1.79 per cent paid the £34 fee…thus making over a million pounds for the criminals in a 10 hour period. I hope that you found this column useful and I would like to thank all the readers. I can be contacted on 637 55 45 79 or gacomputerman@yahoo.es

set before the season got under way. The photograph shows the Kings Cup team for the final match.

Kings Cup – Monte Mar v La Marina Monte Mar – 7 points La Marina - 4 points Last Wednesday saw the end of this season’s campaign for our club, and what a good way to finish against one of the top clubs in the competition, our friends from La Marina. The victory by 7 points to 4 was excellent, but it could have been so much better, as in two of the four disciplines we were leading until the final end, only to lose one and draw the other. However, all credit to the La Marina team, who refused to accept a whitewash, and deservedly salvaged some points from the match. Brian Harman got us off to a good start by winning 21-13, and our pairs team of John Corbet and Bill Young played well together to win by 27-12. The triples of Dave Melville, Lynne and Colin Armitage tied 15 shots all, and the rinks of Chris Merry, Danny Redgewell, June Young and Harry Dobson lost a very close game on the last end 13-14. The friendly match, a pairs, was won by Bill Clifton and Babs Caiger, against the opposition Captain, Rex Cameron and his partner. Captain, Bill Young, would like to thank all of the players who participated throughout the twelve match season, and also wishes to thank Vice-Captain Alan Ashberry and third selector, Colin Armitage. He further stated, that our good position in the league shows what can be achieved by gelling good players together in their respective disciplines, and the selectors abiding by the criteria they

For Adoption We are struggling again to keep up with the amount of animals that are being abandoned and will soon not be able to take any more dogs in unless we manage to re-home some .

Poppy is an 11 year old Pointer and was found wandering alongside a canal, a common place for hunters from the campos to abandon their old dogs once they have outlived their usefulness. She was covered from head to toe in fleas and ticks. Poppy deserves to be somewhere where she can end her days in comfort and contentment with people that will love her. Juke was found by a man whilst out walking his dog. He followed them home and he seemed to be very relieved to be back with people again. He is a gentle giant, very calm with a laid back personality. He does not bark and is easily pleased. He will be a great and loyal companion for his new owner. He is approx 18 months old, is good with other dogs and would not mess his cage up whilst in the Vets for the night.

Bilbo is a beautiful large German Shepherd x Husky was found wandering around in Mercadona car park by the Local Police in San Fulgencio. With the help of the local security guard they managed to lure him into a storage unit. The Police then called us and we went to collect him. He is a big friendly dog and is approx 4 years old. Strumpy is 1 of 5 puppies found on waste ground in the baking heat close to the church at La Marina when they were just 3 weeks old. They are approx 9 weeks old now and the vet said will remain small to medium sized dogs when older.

CHILDREN AND PETS In summer, children and pets spend a longer time together than they do in winter, for example at the street, restaurants, commercial centres, and also at home (with or without guests). In this article we are going to try to explain the most common dangers involving children and pets when they play together. It’s a very uncommon thing a dog or cat causing a serious damage to children who live with him, even if the child is a baby and the pet is a big size dog; as a matter of fact, dogs are usually excellent nannies, and very well beloved games partners for children,

so, normally the problem comes from the child “abusing” the dog or cat, but normally without serious complications. Of course, we are always talking about properly vaccinated and wormed pets (which includes internal and external parasites), because transmission of worms from pets to children is relatively common since children can’t stop kissing and holding the pet, and the youngest ones usually forget to wash their hands after touching the pet. Anyway this can be easily prevented by using good internal and external anti parasite treatments (internal are the most important ones, because it’s not

common for peoples to suffer from fleas and ticks infestations). About vaccinations, just remind everybody that, apart from rabies, dogs and cats infectious diseases are not transmissible to people. Only parasites and fungal skin infections must worry us. So, a healthy animal is not a risk for children health (except, of course, in case of a allergic child). A source of worries for the parents are children being attacked by dogs or cats belonging to other people, because, as we said, dogs normally protect and respect their family’s children, but what about strangers? It’s quite common to see a dog that allows “his” children to brush and even to put clothes on him, but might show angriness with other children. A similar thing happens with dogs that are usually aggressive with other cats but even sleeps together with “his” cat. So, we must always warn children that they mustn’t touch unknown dogs and cats, even if the

owner says “he never bites”, This is specially important if we and our children are “intruders” in the pet’s territory. Another important thing is the breed: attacks caused by large dogs are less common than the ones caused by small dogs, because a big dog is much more respected by children than miniature ones (children think they can use them as teddy bears). So, the first time the child meets the pet we must keep the eye on both ones attitude, and if we have any kind of doubt about what is going to happen, the best thing is to keep them apart (of course, without tying or punishing the pet).

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge I sometimes wonder about the Spanish chap who one day suggested to his chums that he thought it might be fun to leave a pig’s leg hanging up on a hook for about a year, and then see what it tastes like. Actually, it turned out to be quite a clever notion, as any aficionado of Serrano Ham will tell you, and his mates didn’t cart him off to the nearest looney-bin. He might have got the idea from this fellow, the Southern Grey Shrike. He is a close relative of the Great Grey Shrike, which is a rare winter visitor to Britain, but in Spain the Southern Grey Shrike occurs all year round, and is fairly common. If you have a look at the tops of the taller trees in the Clot, you may see one perched prominently surveying the area below him. Basically a grey-and-white bird, with a pinkish tinge to his white breast, he has a Lone Ranger black mask around his eyes and a heavy beak with a hooked tip which suggests he might just be a little bit sinister. What he is doing from his lofty perch is watching carefully for any passing lizard, rodent, large insect or small bird which may be unaware of his presence, then he will swoop down and dispatch it swiftly. What happens next is not for those of a weak stomach. He may well decide he’s not in the mood right now for a snack of crunchy grasshopper or whatever, so he will keep it for later, and he does this by finding a thorny bush or line of barbed wire, and impaling his prey on the spikes. This is his larder, and if you come across a gruesome gibbet of small animals skewered up like this, you’ll know the local Shrike has been at work. Goodness knows what these morsels will taste like after being out for a few days in the hot sun, and well past their sell-by date; I’ve no intention of finding out either, but the Shrike is quite happy to do this. He has another distant cousin, the Woodchat Shrike which is somewhat smaller and different in colour, it is a black and white bird with a striking chestnut-coloured head, usually occurring only in the summer months, but regular in the Clot, and he also has the same spiky habits The Spanish name for the Southern Grey Shrike is Alcaudon Real, meaning Royal Butcherbird. I can’t see what’s royal about spiking your food out in the open, but until I came to Spain I was quite happy to take my ham pre-packaged, so there’s hope for me yet. See you next month.

Saying ´some´in Spanish There are a couple of ways of saying ’some’ in Spanish. As we know, ’some’ is an adjective, and therefore it must agree with the noun that it is describing. ‘Alguno’ is the usual way of saying ’some’, and this has four forms: ‘algún’, ‘alguna’, ‘algunos’ and ‘algunas’. In English we use the word ’some’ for singular uncountable nouns, for example ’some money’, ’some people’ etc., and for plural countable nouns, ’some chairs’, some cars’ etc., and this is why the Spanish needs the four forms. Let’s translate phrases:

these

four

‘Some money’ - ‘algún dinero’ ‘Some people’ - ‘alguna gente’ ‘Some chairs’ - algunas sillas’ ‘Some cars’ - ‘algunos coches’ For the last two, ‘unos’ and ‘unas’ could also be used. Have a go at these phrases, translating them into Spanish: 1) Some bicycles 2) Some balls 3) Some rice 4) Some coats 5) Some coffee 6) Some water
