NOVEMBER 2023 ISSUE 226

Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: Allotments Hi Lou In spring, I asked for an update on the allotments opposite Mediterraneo 3. As of last week, nothing has changed. The graffiti is still there, no plots are being cultivated and the rear fence is now disappearing under the incoming plant growth from the wasteland. It is still a mess. On a brighter note, 2 issues ago I mentioned spotting what looked like carp in the Clot de Galvany lake opposite Mediterraneo 2. I have been back recently and and saw at least 12 different carp. They are obviously thriving which is great to see. Gives the bird watchers an alternative. Thanks Bob GA Advertiser’s Answer: Thank you for your enquiry into the allotments. We are happy to report the City Council of Santa Pola invited applications to use the urban gardens of Gran Alacant. The deadline for submitting applications was from 23 to 31 October and was advertised on the town hall website, Facebook and on GA Advertiser Facebook page. Fingers crossed you will see some improvements very soon. Q: Petanca Court Good morning The area around the Petanca Courts has been tidied up. Thank you for your help. Kind Regards Philip Q: Children’s Playground Hello Lou I have suggestions for the playground at the Gran Alacant health centre, which I would like you to forward to Oscar Valenzuela. A ‘NO BALL GAMES’ sign and ‘NO BIKES/

SCOOTER’ sign to improve coexistence in the park. Balls and vehicles moving at speed can cause injury/incident/accidents. Use the rectangular area right next to the park for ball games and for smokers to stay a safe distance away from others. Thank you for your time. David Oscar Valenzuela's reply: Hello David, thank you for your suggestions. I will speak with department of gardening to find out if the information signs can be added to the new playground. Q: Manhole Cover Update Hi Lou We managed to get a new manhole cover to replace the damaged one in Calle Canarias 4. I hope there will be no more cockroaches escape when they fumigate

the drains. I have to thank Jose Luis at Gestidem for this as the Council and main community were of no assistance. This has only taken two years. Kind regards, Lynne Q: Vending Machine at Sports Centre Good morning Lou I am writing to you as a Physical Education teacher about the vending machine at the sports center. Most of the products on offer are unhealthy and include chocolates, candies and carbonated drinks. I understand that society wants what it

wants, but I believe other more suitable products should be offered so people do not think they can eat that just because they exercise. Thank you in advance. David Oscar Valenzuela's reply: Hello David Nice to hear from you again. Being a father of two, I fully understand the importance of healthy snacks. I will speak with the sports centre to find out if the vending company can amend the selection and include some healthy snacks to offer a better choice to suit everybody. Picture from Piano Concert - Reader's Story Hi Lou, Thank you for the photo from your August issue. The reason we wanted it is that the young lady on the right lives opposite us in Gran Alacant. Her name is Berta and she is a very talented 9 year old. We have been friends with her parents for almost 18 years and they have visited us in the UK. After nearly 6 weeks we are going back to the UK and will appreciate receiving copies of the Gran Alacant Magazine helping us to keep up with all the GA news. Once again, many thanks. Regards, Wendy

The Lowedown INTERVIEW

with Lynne

with Selina Bruce

Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 7 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. I will be sharing some interviews with GA’s very own Superstars! This month’s interview is with Selina Bruce from Fife in Scotland. Selina came to live permanently in Gran Alacant with her husband Alasdair in 2019. WHY DID YOU MOVE TO GA We actually wanted to move to Tenerife but we came here on holiday and loved it. We had a holiday home before we moved permanently and used to holiday here 6 or 7 times a year. We sold our holiday home during Covid and bought a bigger place all on the one level with a self-contained space for visitors, a craft room for me and lovely roof terrace for our pets and us.

WHAT DID YOU WORK AS I was a Police Officer for 30 years. I had many different roles including Response Officer, Community Officer, Schools Liaison Officer; I even worked in management for a while before ending up as a Custody Sergeant.

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO WORK IN THE POLICE FORCE No, I trained as a Chef and worked in hotel catering. My best friend joined the police and I thought I would give it a go. I was the first female on my shift and the only female for two years. My male colleagues treated me very well and we had some good banter.

BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB I loved my role as Custody Sergeant. I liked the fact that I didn’t have to go outside and get wet. It was an exciting and safe environment where I met many colourful characters. The station I worked from had a 20% Polish community so I learned enough Polish to be able to book our regulars in.

WORST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB Being physically assaulted was the worst. Every year we trained in self-defence, how to use restraint holds, fend off techniques, use batons and CS spray but it never fully prepares you for when it happens. I also didn’t have much of a social life working in the police service. Sadly, many people’s attitudes changed towards me when I told them I was a Police Officer so it was easier to say I was an Air Traffic Controller.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES I help organise GALs (Gran Alacant Ladies) events along with Claire Williams and Joanne Whearity. GALs was set up for like-minded women to come together and share advice about living and holidaying in Spain. We are an international group with over 560 members. I volunteer for SAT Animal Rescue Charity Shop one day a week. I enjoy altering clothes I buy there. I have my own craft room in the house. I love making name badges, invitations, table plans for the GALs events.

WHAT EVENTS DO GALS ORGANISE We have coffee mornings the first week of the month at Hispania. There are monthly lunches at various restaurants in Gran Alacant. We also organise special charity fairs where we raise money for our chosen charity Elche Children’s Home. Each year members can nominate a registered charity that has a connection with Gran Alacant and all our members vote for their favourite.

HOW DO WOMEN JOIN GALS They can join through our Facebook Group GALs – Gran Alacant Ladies. On this page we have ‘Sell it Sunday’ where members can post items they want to sell, ‘What’s On Wednesday’ where members can advertise what’s on in the area, and ‘Recommendations’ any day of the week.

MORE INTERESTING INFORMATION •

On Valentine’s Day in 2005, at the age of 35, Selina married her husband Alasdair in secret at Dunfermline Town Hall in Fife, Scotland.

Selina loves science fiction ‘Marvel’ and ‘Star Trek’ and once took the bus and train to Blackpool dressed up for a Star Trek convention.

Their dog’s name is PIVO Polish for beer and their cat’s name is MESSI after the football player.

Selina was born in England but has lived most of her life in Scotland. Selina is the only one in her family with a Scottish accent.

Selina is Meat Free and Alcohol Free.

Thank you Selina for your time. I really enjoyed chatting to you and getting to know you better.

New visions for the future In October we attended the EcoAltea festival hosted by the town of Altea and the Miguel Hernandez University at their campus in Altea. This weekend event brings together people interested in a wide range of ecological and environmental issues and projects. The annual festival was established in 2008 with the motto of “Think locally - Act globally”. The main focus is a series of lectures and seminars on a range of topics addressing potential responses to the environmental and ecological challenges that we are all going to face in the immediate future. It is an opportunity for people and organisations running real projects to share ideas and knowledge. All of the projects featured are attempting to create alternative solutions and responses to the changes in our climate and natural environment. We attended several of the seminars including ones on the questionable renewable energy macro programmes currently underway in our region and the regeneration of degraded natural environments. The festival also included sessions on other subjects such as bio construction and permaculture. The individuals who gave the lectures and seminars were impressive both for their technical knowledge but also their determination to develop projects that sit outside of the current mainstream. Not all of the techniques being employed by these projects will ultimately provide large scale tools for our future; however an open minded willingness to challenge existing ways of conducting our lives is going to be essential for all of us and the attendees at EcoAltea 2023 already have that! In addition to the formal lectures and seminars the festival offered a large

number of more informal events ranging from classes on traditional local reed basket weaving to meditation and dance. Many of these took place in the shady grass courtyards of the university campus and there was a buzz of activity with events occurring simultaneously on different levels of the open-air tiered site. One was able to wander around catching sight of numerous different groups; quite reminiscent of a freshers fair with a similar atmosphere of expectation and quiet excitement. The seed exchange was particularly popular with people seeking advice as well as free seeds. On an adjoining site, next to the impressive Altea Concert hall, there was a highly popular food court with stalls offering everything from artisanal beer and wine to mexican burritos and sweet crepes.

One of the most popular stalls was the group from Elche selling freshly squeezed pomegranate juice! Next to the food court was a commercial trade area with stalls selling everything from handcrafted pendants to high tech solar power systems

with the capability to track the path of the sun during the course of the day.

think hard about how we live our lives and find solutions to the constellation of issues about to engulf us. We have written previously about our concern that our own local council here in Gran Alacant seems oblivious to the need to start to prepare our community for the climate changes now occurring. (March 2023, ¨Greener Gran Alacant? A missed opportunity¨, January 2023, ¨Valencia, Leading by Example¨, November 2022, ¨Global Challenge. Local action?¨). There could be no greater contrast to the open minded spirit of EcoAltea than the constant concrete pouring that seems to excite the councillors of Santa Pola. One of our elected councillors has

There was also a presence by voluntary and campaigning groups. One of the most notable stalls was that of the famous Sea Shepherd organisation who campaign to preserve marine environments and wildlife; we saw them being interviewed by local radio during the day. The event was hugely popular with good attendance in all of the areas. It is clear that there is great interest in a wide range of matters relating to the natural environment and our relationship with it. It is also apparent that hidden away in our local countryside are large numbers of people engaged in projects seeking different ways to live their lives. It is encouraging to have seen so many people attending an event primarily focused on a clear eyed need to

recently endorsed in social media that the "destruction of nature" is the inevitable result of "progress": One has to ask if such a crude view of "progress" is really appropriate in the current circumstances? Is urban greening really too much to ask for? How many new urbanisations and construction sites are one too many? What will Gran Alacant be like to live in by 2030?

IGNORE HOAXES AND FAKE NEWS FROM TABLOIDS: NOBODY IS GOING TO CONFISCATE YOUR HAMSTER (OR BUDGIE, OR LOVEBIRD, OR GUINEA PIG...). Now, we can proceed with this month article:

TWO VERY LITTLE KNOWN POISONINGS We all know there are some foods that mustn’t be offered to our pets, such as coffee or chocolate. They are toxic when provided a big quantity, because they contain active substances (caffeine in case of coffee, theobromine in case of chocolate). They can also be toxic for people, but in this case the quantity required for producing a poisoning is so big that is practically impossible to occur. But there are other foods that may be toxic for pets, but owners rarely know about it. One example might be grapes. Any kind of grape, white ones, red ones, and even sultanas, normal ones and seedless ones, may be toxic for dogs. According to The Merck Veterinary Manual: “cases of kidney failure have been detected in dogs after eating a dose of 32 g/kg of grapes. In case of sultanas, symptoms appear from 11-30 g/kg”. Average weight of a grape is about 3 g; this means a dog weighing 1 kg may start showing symptoms after eating 10 grapes. But, do dogs like grapes? Well, most dogs are sweet tooth and love anything that has sweet taste. Probably they won’t go to the kitchen for stealing grapes, but if we offer them, they will probably accept and enjoy them. But my dog eats grapes regularly and, so far, nothing has happened. Yes, that may happen. Getting poisoned with grapes is something that depends on the individual, so there are dogs which will suffer vomiting, diarrhoea and kidney failure, and there are some other dogs that will be ok after eating the same quantity of grapes.

There is no way to know a priori if your dog has the sensitivity or not since the mechanism remains unknown, so better don’t push your luck. What about cats? Despite they are normally more sensitive against everything than dogs, there is not any reported case of grape poisoning in cats, but this is probably because cats are much more careful than dogs about what they put in their mouths, and they don´t like sweets: they prefer fatty foods like butter, or high protein ones, like tuna. Just a little reminder: onion and garlic are highly toxic for dogs, no matter if they are fresh or cooked, despite there are dogs that love ali oli. Once again, don’t try. Another source of poisoning would be rubbish, but the mechanism in this case wouldn’t be eating rotten or spicy food, or bones. Rubbish poisoning implies the animal has eaten a fungal toxin (mycotoxin). Mycotoxins are toxic substances that some fungi produce when colonizing food, such as cereals and nuts. Mycotoxin poisonings can be very serious, but normally we don’t associate “expired” nuts with digestive problems. Prevention for this poisoning is quite simple: rubbish bin (and also cans and plastic recycling bins: some supermarket meat trays have a kind of pillow for absorbing liquids which is very much loved by dogs) must be out of the reach of pets.

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have their own Elche CF supporters club to attend home games at the stadium and watch away games in local bars around Gran Alacant. Home games see the group move around different bars in Gran Alacant as their meeting place, with the usual bars used being Happy’s at the GA Centre while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill. From there, the group, which is primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges carsharing to get up to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to Gran Alacant afterwards. Travel to the ground is problematic with no easy public transport links. With the group sharing driving duties, they have managed to shift larger groups of fans to games. Tickets are always easy to come by this season with the club being in the second division. They can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.

Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the actual date and time of the match to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand. Home games in November are against Real Zaragoza (Sat 11 at 18:30) and SD Amorebieta (weekend of 26 November date and time to be confirmed). Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’. ¡Mucho Elche!

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY

GAGS are now back to playing twice a week, Tuesday and Friday at 8am. We are looking forward to meeting up with our regular players and welcoming new members whether they be residents or visitors.

Time: on both days normally 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.

SOCIETY DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS: Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The official address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante.

Cost: usually €50 per round at peak times to include a buggy plus €1.50 mandatory insurance charge. It can sometimes be cheaper during less busy, off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires €5 sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round.

When: the formal Society Day is Tuesdays weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together every Friday which has always been a Gentleman’s Day.

We look forward to seeing you.

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL

The Gran Alacant Walking Football Community joined together in October to raise a glass to their longtime buddy and Walking Football stalwart Clive Bailey. Clive passed away earlier this year following a short illness. Club members met up to remember him on what would have been his 77th Birthday. Describing Clive as small in stature but big in personality - a witty funny, caring gentleman, members paid tribute to him at Cafeteria El Tio Chato in Gran Alacant, where they shared Tapas, Paella, and many memories of a dear friend. Our new astroturf 8-a-side pitch, situated behind the Indoor Sports Centre next to the portacabins for the secondary school on Av. D’Escandinavia is proving to be very popular. Numbers have been increasing throughout October and the decision was made to have a referee at our sessions. Alex Rak now referees our sessions as well as the Santa Pola sessions on Mondays. If numbers increase further, it will be necessary to move to 3 teams per session and extend the session to one and a half hours. This will let everyone have one hour playing time. At the time of writing this article, the Gran Alacant Walking Football group are holding sessions on Wednesdays at 12 noon using the astroturf pitch. Entrance to the facility is from 11:45 using the side gate from the old car park for the outdoor market.

Please arrive in good time to facilitate the picking of two equal ability teams. Again, we must emphasize we are to use only changing room number 3 on the left hand side of the Indoor Centre as we enter. The remainder of the centre is for the use of the school. Please be considerate to all pupils and staff of the school at all times. We will be sharing the sports facility with them for the foreseeable future. The womans group continue on Thursdays with the new access time from 11:30. As you can play every weekday now with the different groups in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola, players can pick whatever sessions suit them best.
