We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

A personal message from the Councillor for Gran Alacant ...

I am speaking to all the citizens of Gran Alacant. I want to tell you that very important dates are coming. We are stating to ease restrictions and establish actions that will allow more freedom of movement. So far, thanks to everyone’s involvement and collaboration, we are doing very well. Hence, we have almost no incidents. That is why I ask you all to continue along this line of good practices. We must continue to be diligent because thanks to that we will get out of this situation quicker. I do not want to forget the great work being done by all my fellow councilors and of course Mayor Loreto Serrano. I repeat again that in coming days we must comply with the rules. A very warm hug. Óscar Valenzuela Councilor of Gran Alacant

Don’t throw it away! We need it! We would like to request that while everyone is turning out long forgotten corners of rooms and cupboards, that if you find anything suitable that you are prepared to give up for a good cause, please consider tombola prizes for our charity night in September being held for Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity. When allowed we do have some storage space if you need anything out of your way and we will be grateful for your help.

Stay safe everyone Our email address is stuandsheila27@gmail.com for any further information or offers Thank you Stuart & Sheila xxx To help prevent a serious mosquito infestation, Santa Pola City Council has enlisted the services of a specialist pest control company. Since the beginning of the year a schedule of fumigation has been in place. As there was a lot of rain and an increase in temperatures in April these treatments have intensified. The treatments have focused in the areas where the infestations are more prolific. These include Tamarit, Playa Lisa, the area next to the Salt Lakes in Santa Pola, Clot de Galvany, Avda. Noruega in Gran Alacant, Xiprerets, Pueblo Levantino, the area around Carrefour and different parts of the N-332. In order to prevent a wide spread problem, these areas will continue to be fumigated as well as the areas that have not yet been treated.

I hope this finds all of you safe and well during this very difficult time for all of us. The last few weeks have been very difficult and soul destroying for small businesses in the area but even more so for those working on the front line. Not a good spring this year but as most of us have all been doing our bit to abide by the government guidelines, hopefully they will be in a position to lift the lock-down soon. We have kept things going as best as we could for the time being. Hopefully we will be able to return to work soon and be in a position to offer holidays again to all of our past and present guests. I have been informed that flights will resume June 17th at the soonest. To all of our guest who have booked or are looking to book in the future, we are doing all we can to ensure the bookings made can be re arranged if necessary to later in the year or next year. We are hoping that this will all be over soon providing everyone adheres to the government guidelines about staying home.

*********** On a sad note a friend of ours Denise Hutt, passed away during the month, shortly

before her 70th birthday. About 20 years ago when we were researching Gran Alacant and our big move out here to live, Denise and husband John were looking to do the same. We met up with them on the internet and shared pros and cons about moving out here, then met up when we both arrived. Sad times, with happy memories.

********** There is one big advantage to advertisers in this internet edition. If the magazine is printed, obviously nothing during the month can be changed. With this being digital things can be changed just as they happen. At the moment some food outlets are advertising take away food, some even delivering, so watch for any magazine changes during the month. ********** A thank you to Lou to produce a magazine on the internet for free advertising for her regular advertisers. The time to make up this edition is as much as the printed edition, so lots of work for free. ********** News is very thin on the ground, so would love to hear from you. Particuarly with some good news or a funny story. As usual you can email me at laneinspain@hotmail.com

If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, or have a question for Gran Alacant Councillor Oscar Pedro Valenzuela, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

TRANSITION TO A NEW NORMAL

PHASE 0 (CURRENT SITUATION) 26 April Allowing children to go outside to exercise 2 May Adults permitted to go outside to exercise 4 May Opening of certain business with appointment only (no walk-ins) PHASE 1 (INITIAL) 11 May Opening of hotels and tourist accommodation (but not communal areas such as pools, gardens etc) 11 May Opening of bars and restaurants, outside areas only and restricted to 30% of the tables allowed in previous years based on the municipal license and ensuring correct social distancing. PHASE 2 (INTERMEDIATE) 25 May Opening of interior of bars and restaurants, however these premises must have a guarantee of separation between both customers at the table and between tables. They will also have a limitation of 30% of capacity and food consumption can only be at marked tables or to take away. PHASE 3 (ADVANCED) 8 June The Prime Minster has detailed that the beaches will re-open, but again with strict social distancing. 8 June More general mobilisation and freedom of movement. Regarding the opening of communal pools, the Government has specified that the measures will be detailed later. PHASE 4 (NEW NORMAL) This is the so-called "new normal" that Pedro Sanchez talks about and could be reached by the end of June as long as the relief measures of the previous phases have been met with a positive result. In other words, until July, there will be no movement of people between provinces until then and currently there is no mention of opening borders to foreign tourists or international travel being resumed.

TRANSITION TO A NEW NORMAL Each phase of the de-escalation in Spain will last two weeks, Spain will progress to the next phase or go back to the previous one depending on the epidemiological situation. The de-escalation is divided into four phases: Phase 0 starting on Monday 04 May, phase 1 starting on 11 May, phase 2 starting on 25 May phase 3 starting on 08 June. The Government will decide which provinces will progress from phase to phase fortnightly. WHEN CAN YOU VISIT PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS? The government hasn’t yet specified. It will do so after an upcoming Government meeting in which it will regulate all social contact with the elderly or with people with previous pathologies. MEET FRIENDS It is still an undetermined activity. Phase 1 (from 11 May) allows social contact "in small groups for people who are not vulnerable or with previous pathologies." As with the previous statement, the Government will specify in a future briefing what the limit of number of people will be and under what conditions they can meet. Both in private houses and on bar terraces which will have reopened by then. HOW AND WHEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TRAVEL Travel outside the province or island of residence will not be allowed until the "new normal" is reached. In the best case scenario from 22 June, but even this date will only be for places where coronavirus is most under control. And once the "new normal" is reached, you can only travel between provinces that are in the same phase. In other words, if Madrid were still in an earlier phase, people from this province could not leave to go to second residences at the beach or anywhere else. Leisure travel in Europe or abroad is far away. The government asks for "prudence" and refers to the agreement that EU members will reach to decide when the restrictions will be lifted.

14

SECOND HOMES WITHIN THE SAME PROVINCE Going to second residences are taken into account in phase 2 (from 25 May) exclusively if they are in the same province as normal residence. If they are in another, it is prohibited. GO TO ANOTHER PROVINCE When phase 3 is complete and the "new normal" begins. This will not happen until at least 22June. Until then it will be prohibited even if it is a bordering province that is in the same phase. BARS, RESTAURANTS & NIGHT CLUBS They will reopen very gradually, but they will open. In phase 0, starting this Monday 04 May, restaurants and cafeterias can open for takeaway’s only, without customers being allowed to consume anything in the premises. In phase 1, starting on 11 May, terraces can be opened, limiting the permitted capacity of people to 30% of the ‘old normal’ legal limit, the local Town Hall will have the possibility to increase the limit. In phase 2, from 25 May, consumptions will be allowed inside the premises but with table service only, with a limit of 30% of the capacity and always seated at tables. Therefore it will not be permitted to be stood or seated at the bar, night bars and nightclubs are excluded. In phase 3, from 08 June, the capacity will be increased to 50% and people will be allowed to stand/sit at the bar. Night bars and nightclubs will also reopen, with a maximum capacity of 30%. RETURN TO PRESENTIAL WORK Working from home will continue to be recommended throughout all deconfinement phases. In phase 3 starting 08 June, "protocols for face-to-face reincorporation in companies for work activity" will be considered, including the use of PPE. REOPENING OF SCHOOLS This term has already been permanently suspended. The President has said that students will not go back to classes until September.

SERVICE BUSINESSES Some premises such as hairdressers, hardware stores, dentists, opticians, physiotherapy centres or florists, are considered services. They are included in phase 0, and they can start on Monday 04 throughout Spain, but with many limitations. Clients will be served individually and always by appointment only, giving preference to those over 65 years of age. Commercial premises must have a counter, screen or, failing that, extreme individual protection measures with gloves and masks. OTHER BUSINESSES IN GENERAL Can reopen in phase 1 (11 May), which will start on 04 May in the Balearic Islands and some of the Canary Islands. With capacity limited to 30% of the ‘old normal’ and as long as there is a guaranteed minimum distance of 2 meters between people. If this is not possible only one person will be allowed inside. Shopping centres are excluded at this stage. Open-air markets can reopen, with a limit of 25% of the usual stalls and if the corresponding Town Hall permits it. MALLS / SUPER STORES They are in phase 2, which will reopen in some provinces on 25 May. They will be opened to the public but use of communal areas and recreational areas prohibited and with capacity limited to 40%. REOPENING OF FOOD MARKETS On Tuesday 28th April, the Santa Pola City Council assessed the possibilities of opening the three local markets and is preparing to reopen the food stalls from Thursday the 7th of May. Above all, safety and the maximum guarantees of preventing the spread of Covid-19 must prevail. The plan is to reopen the Gran Alacant market on Thursday the 7th of May and those of Viguetas and Maestro Quislant on the 9th of May. HOTELS They will open in phase 1, starting on 11 May, some tourist areas such as the Balearic Islands earlier on 04 May. Hotels can open but without use of communal areas. In phase 2, from 25 May, communal areas can be opened with a limit of 30% of

the capacity, except for the hotels own catering areas which will follow the rules for restaurants. The limit increases to 50% in phase 3, from 08 Jun. BEACHES They are in phase 3, starting 08 June at the start of summer. The Government's plan only says at the moment that they will open "in safe conditions and with distancing.” CINEMA, THEATRES & MUSEUMS They will also open in stages. Libraries from 11 May; cultural events and shows also from 11 May with a capacity of less than 30 people if they are inside premises and 200 if they are outdoors; museums also from 11 May with 30% capacity, and on 11 May filming of movies and series can restart. Cinemas and theatres will not reopen until phase 2 starting 25 May, with a third of their capacity. On this date visits to key tourist monuments will start. GYMS & EXCERCISE Some can open from phase 0 but by appointment, most will open in phase 1. Always individual activities, with capacity limits (which will increase over time) and with safety measures. CHURCHES OR MOSQUES Places of religious worship will reopen from 11 May for those who want to go to mass or to pray. Initially the limit will be 30% in phase 1 and will increase to 50% in phase 2. FUNERALS Phase 1 allows funerals for a "limited number of family members" with safety protocols and physical distance. This will happen from 11 May. In phase 2 and 3 the number of people who can go will increase. At this last stage the limit of "relatives" will be lifted. WEDDINGS Weddings are allowed but without attendees. In order for family and friends to attend, you will have to wait for phase 2. It will be with a limited number (still to be determined). Phase 3 contemplates "a larger number of attendees". An important reminder: the limitation to go to other provinces. Sources: @elmundoes / PP Santa Pola

Thank you ... Can I take this oportunity to thank you for every single edition of the GA Advertiser, they help while away the hours (on the beach normally) and I look forward to the beginning of each month, even reading online when we in the UK. Keep up the good work. Christine King I am writing this on day 26 (or maybe it's 25 or even 27) of lockdown in Spain. This is such a surreal time and one that started so suddenly that I think most of us couldn't quite believe it was happening. I am here with my husband, David and the first we knew of this was when we visited Guardamar on Friday 13th March (yes I know...how many of you noticed that)!!!. We parked the car and wondered if there was something wrong on the beach as there were lots of police cordoning off the small piece we could see. We had visited the town to go for Menu del Dia so continued our short walk to the restaurant giving no more thought to the incident. I noticed that the lady who served us seemed preoocupied and was on her phone quite a lot but again gave no heed to what her problem was.. We ordered our food and sat back to wait. We had quite a good view of the seafront and noticed another group of police cordoning off a seperate part of the beach and I started to imaginine all sorts of gory things that might have happened. The couple sitting near us in the restaurant started to chat but they were also unaware of what the problem was. They seemed to be regulars of the restaurant and began speaking to a member of staff who had just arrived. It was then that the police actions began to make sense and what was happening started to sink in, although looking back I don't think any of us envisaged the severity of the situation and how this would all pan out. We drove back to Gran Alacant and following the advice that the bars and restaurants would close for two weeks at midnight, we donned our glad rags

16

and went for drinks with some friends!! Again looking back now we all just saw this as our right to have one last night out and boy we certainly did.... Alass as 11.40pm beckoned, the police made their presence felt and I am proud to say that everyone bumped elbows goodbye and quietly made their way home. Little did we know how long it would (or indeed will) be before we can bump elbows with each other again. I think that is has taken a while for the enormity of the situation to sink in for most of us and I certainly could not believe in the beginning that we weren't even allowed out for excercise. As a psychotherapist I was truly worried about, not only my own mental health but those of my fellow lockdowners (for want of a better word). However, having watched how this has developed in the UK I can see how difficult it is to police and for people to flaunt the rules. I am nevertheless still concerned about how this may have an effect on the mental health of many and particularly on those who were already struggling with issues such as depression, stress, anxiety, addiction, obsessive compulsive behavious (OCD) etc. As humans we generally thrive on being in company so long term isolation may feel threateniing to us and adding in a pandemic can only add to worries and insecurities. Fortunately, there does seem to be a lot of help coming to the fore in the form of online blogs, videos etc, and for me, UK television with ITVs Dr Hilary, Lorraine and the This Morning team have all provided invaluable advice. I've also generally only watched "reputable" news channels to avoid a lot of the fake news etc online.

I'm proud to say that I am one of the 75,000 NHS UK vounteers having signed up to their "check in and chat" service. I'm a small cog in a massive wheel and my thoughts, prayers and best wishes are with everyone keeping our countries running and putting themselves at huge risk every day. I only hope they continue to get the recognition they so rightly deserve when this is all over. My heart goes out to all those who have lost their lives and the families left behind trying to cope with their loss. The saying goes that "life has to go on" and although it is hard to imagine, we do all, in time, learn to live with loss, albeit in a different way without those loved ones. We are now fortunate that the weather seems to have taken a turn for the better and I am writing this from my roof terrace. It would be natural to add with a glass of wine at my hand but its not the weekend yet. David and I decided quite early on that it would be so easy to fall into a glass or two every day but, that for us, we needed something to differentiate the weekends. So, we have a four day weekend starting on a Thursday, I hate

Mondays (bet most of you have heard that before) and Tuesdays and Wednesdays but all joking aside it does give us some semblance of routine and boy do we love Thursdays. I must also give a shout out to Paul and Team Belfry for delivering our roast dinners every Sunday. We will be breaking with tradition next week though as it is my 60th birthday on Easter Monday and for me, that can't be celebrated without a glass or two of fizz. It will be a strange day as we should be spending it here with friends and family but the hubby and I are hoping for good weather so we can have our own little party on the roof terrace and i'm sure we will be listening to Lionel Ritchies, dancing on the ceiling and the Drifters, up on the roof whilst clapping for the key workers at 8pm!!! Stay safe everyone and see you on the other side. PS. I am wondering what is in store for my 70th as I was here for my 50th when the ash cloud arrived and missed my party in the UK!

THIS IS RINGTONS For over 110 years we have been travelling the world selecting the finest tea leaves and perfecting our quality process to ensure we bring you the very best cup of tea. Our premium tea has now arrived in Spain and we cannot wait to introduce it to you.

History

The History of Ringtons The Ringtons story dates back to 1907, and Ringtons still remains a family business today.

Ethical Trading

At Ringtons we are, and always have been, committed to sourcing our teas and coffees in an ethical and sustainable way. Over the years we have developed good, strong relationships with a core group of tea producers, mainly in India and Africa. We regularly visit our suppliers so we can get to know them better and more fully understand the challenges they face. Visit's like this help our suppliers better understand our quality and ethical requirements. Selecting the best tea's for use in our blends is incredibly important to us. Our suppliers recognise and work with us to achieve this and good ethical practices at every stage of our supply chains. Ringtons are proud to run and participate in development projects with key suppliers and have recently launched a new Tea Growing Community Charitable Trust. As our business has expanded over the years, our supply base has also grown - we now buy from over 200 tea estates and smallholder organisations - but our ethical principals have remained. We're active members of the ethical tea partnership (ETP) and are committed to only buy from tea estates and producer groups that are participating in the ETP Programme. ETP monitors social and environmental conditions on tea estates in all major tea producing regions. As well as this, we are dedicated to reducing the gender pay gap across our business.

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB

Sponsored by The Pub, Bowling Abroad, Avalon, LoungeD, Rogers, La Piazza & The Belfry

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN CLUB SECRETARY AND SOCIAL COMMITTE CHAIRMAN From the contacts I and other committee members have had in various forms, our members all appear to be safe and well, let's hope it continues. From comments I have received from members by phone, email or meeting in the supermarket, it is the same message bored, frustrated, missing bowling. Also club social events and getting together socially at the club are been missed. It would appear we have all done the jobs we had put off doing for months. The last couple of weeks have seen Jean and Rod celebrate their Golden Wedding with friends on House Party with John Hunt doing the same a few days later for his 65th birthday. The lockdown meant we had to cancel the AGM and we were not able to complete our discussions concerning the future of the Club. As soon as the lockdown is lifted we hope to reach a agreement with the owner that we can recommend to the membership at a rearranged AGM. We wish all our Sponsors well and hope they come through this difficult time with their business intact and we can start using them again. Dave is running a weekly online quiz. Les has put Friends of Monte Mar on Facebook and keeps our website updated with news,

20

which means you can keep in touch with other members. Look forward to seeing you all again soon, in the meantime keep safe and well. Chris Harding. Chairman CLUB SECRETARY Well what strange times these are, all of our Social Events have been cancelled for the time and no bowls. How are we existing? I guess its with the odd glass of wine and lots of tele!! One sad thing to come out of all of this is that we have had our Potters trip cancelled. For those that don't know at Potters resort they have bowls, archery, tenpin bowling and lots of other sports. They also have very good entertainment in the evenings. Twenty three of us were looking forward to a fun five days. However, not to be. Don't forget all of you that were going you still have your deposit to be returned. This will be repaid as soon as the resort is allowed to reopen. When we are back to bowling we will have a Chicken Run whatever time of the month it is – can't wait!! Take care and keep safe Joan SOCIAL COMMITEE Hola everyone, hope you are all well and

Thank you ... Brigitte & Claudia for sharing your story... How we run 100km inside our house ...

Hello dear readers,

Lets us introduce ourselves, we are Brigitte and Claudia from Berlin. Some of you may know us because you have seen us running or jogging through Gran Alacant. Running is one of our biggest hobbies and that's why when we saw a post in the GA Advertiser Magazine asking readers to share their Covid-19 stories, we wanted to share ours....

After we "walked" on the spot in the living room or on the terrace for almost four weeks, we started to get bored with it. So we started searching the internet.

We have played soccer for decades, but are too old for it now (60 and 48). So we decided to reoriente ourselves and felt that running could become our new favourite sport. We have begun training for running a half marathon and were thrilled when we were asked if we wanted to join the Gran Alacant Runners. Recently we ran with Philippe from GA Homefinders at the Benidorm Half Marathon and were looking forward to running in the planned Abel Anton cross-country race and the Half Marathon in Elche. But then Covid-19 came and everything changed. All runs were cancelled, as were our flights back to Berlin. Now, like everyone else, we have been under house arrest for over four weeks. So it was time to come up with something new to pursue our hobby.

24

In Berlin we have participated in a few hikes/ runs (55 km and 100 km) with the organizer mammutmarsch. And lo and behold, this time too we found what we were looking for. A 100 km hike at home, with a maximum time of 24 hours (hikeathome). We just had to participate!!! So we signed up and started to make plans. Do we run or hike? The decision was made quickly, we would try to run it. However, would we just run on the spot or do a parkour (using obstacles)?

As well as on the spot running on the terraces, we decided to use the entire house. Our plan was to go inside from the terrace in front of the house, through the living room, down to the basement,

turn around there and run back up to the ground floor. From there we would go to the first floor, up onto the roof, run a lap around there and then go back down to the front terrace. We created a small video and uploaded it to facebook so that our friends in Germany could see it and promised to keep them posted. So then we thought about what catering we would need for a 100 km run. We bought everything from muesli, fruit, cakes, nuts, isotonic drinks and wine gum (despite the corona bottlenecks) and set up different food stations.

The start was set for the 11th April, Easter Saturday, at 11 o'clock. There was a livestream on youtube and over 500 people took part in the race. We made our first food stop after about 20 km and enjoyed some cake. Until then, everything was very easy. We had planned that we would make a refreshment stop every 20 km .... However, after we had run about 30 km our neighbours took pity on us and delivered freshly made tuna pastries, of course you can't say no. So we paused a little earlier and enjoyed our surprise dinner. For dessert, we treated ourselves to vanilla ice cream with fruit salad. We then walked for 1/2 km before we felt it was ok to run again. At the 60 km point we stopped for cake again ... we seemed to be craving

between the breaks became shorter and shorter. But our motto was still: giving up is not an option. Finally, after 16 hours and 11 and 15 minutes, we had reached our 100 km goal. It was just after 3 am and as a reward, we enjoyed a beer đ&#x;™‚ We went to bed at 4.30 am exhausted but happy. Besides us, about 10 people had managed to cover 100 km or more. The craziest even managed 150 km. On Saturday, 18th April there is another hikeathome, so we may have to renew this article before publishing ...

sugar ... We slowly started to be aware of pain in our feet, but giving up was not an option. To our great joy we enjoyed a live concert that a neighbour was giving from his roof at 8 pm. Ok, it wasn't just for the two of us, but it gave us another motivation boost. On the youtube live chat we could see that the majority of the participants had already finished ... At our fourth and last refreshment stop at 80 km we no longer wanted food, instead, we put our feet up and spent quarter of an hour on the couch. Honestly, the last 20 kms were really hard. Our feet ached and the running sections

We hope our photos give you an idea of our experience. Maybe it will inspire some of you to do a virtual run or just try something different. And if virtual running is not for you, you can always take a look at what the Gran Alacant Runners will be up to after Covid-19. Until then, hold on everyone, take care of yourself and stay healthy ... Keep on running!

Given the pandemic that the entire world is experiencing, it is necessary that the general population is aware of what the coronavirus is. Below we have answered some questions that are of interest and that some of our patients have asked us.

among others.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19? The main symptoms are fever, cough, and a feeling of shortness of breath. There may also be symptoms like diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Most cases have mild symptoms, especially in children and young adults. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, major difficulty in breathing and even death. The most serious cases are presented mainly by the elderly or those who suffer from a chronic disease, such as heart or lung problems,

How is the new coronavirus transmitted? Transmission is by close contact with respiratory secretions that are generated by a sick person’s cough or sneeze. Its contagiousness depends on the amount of the virus in the airways. These secretions infect another person if they come into contact with their nose, eyes, or mouth. It is transmitted when the distance is less than 1 to 2 meters from an infected person.

34

When do COVID-19 symptoms appear? The incubation period can last from 1 to 14 days, but in most cases symptoms appear 5 to 6 days after infection.

PLAZA MAYOR

What are the risk groups? The main risk groups are those over 60 years old, those who suffer with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic lung disease, immunodeficiencies, cancer, and pregnancy. How long do coronavirus symptoms last? On average, from the onset of symptoms to recovery the time is 2 weeks when the disease has been mild, when it has been severe it ranges from 3-6 weeks. Is there a specific treatment for coronavirus? There is no specific treatment, studies are being done with different drugs (antivirals and antimalarials, among other drugs) that have shown some efficacy. Therefore, it is important to remember the recommendation to never purchase drugs that can be advertised for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19. Treatment protocols are changing periodically based on new advances in the treatment of the disease. It is important to know that there is no preventive treatment, nor is there yet a vaccine that prevents the disease. There are treatments that help control the symptoms of COVID-19 and medical attention improves the prognosis of the disease. Should we wear masks to protect ourselves? The main prevention mechanisms continue to be Interpersonal distance, hand washing and hygiene in public and private spaces. If a person has respiratory symptoms, it is advisable to wear a mask. Following the latest recommendations of the Spanish Ministry of Health, the use of masks in the general population could serve as a mean of control to reduce the spread of the virus, by reducing the emission of respiratory droplets from infected people who have not yet developed symptoms. The recommendation of the use of masks is when you are in crowded places like public transport or enclosed spaces like supermarkets.

It should be remembered that this measure is only complementary to those previously mentioned. The most important thing is the distance between people, hand hygiene and not touching the face, eyes, nose and mouth is essential for prevention. What do I do if I have symptoms of COVID-19? The most recommended thing is that you do not go to medical centres or hospitals to prevent further infections. It is recommended that you contact them via the telephone number in your community. It is important to maintain preventive measures at home to avoid infecting family members and people in your environment. If you have respiratory distress, it is better to call or go to the emergency department within the hospitals. They will perform chest x-rays and make tests and depending on the results, they may ask for an additional test for coronavirus. It is especially important that you stay at home, and that you practice prevention, since it is the most important thing to control this pandemic. At Gran Alacant Family Doctors 24h we work near you. These days we have an online consultation service or consultation via telephone, in addition to attending emergencies. Since we know that there are other medical conditions that are also important, do not hesitate to call if you need help. We also have a prescription service for chronic diseases so you do not run out of your usual medication.

Beer Spa Alicante Thank you Jim & Susan Roberts

for inspiration and sharing your lovely afternoon with us ... Hi All, We are sitting here in the first week of April and wanted to share with you a wonderful day out that we had at the beginning of March, which now seems a million years ago. We recommend this place even in the searing heat of July & August, as it will be a cool, calming experience, or as a day out in Winter. It will also give you something to look forward too in these lock down days, that WILL soon be over. Our son & daughter in law saw an advertisement online for the Alicante Beer Spa. As a Christmas present, they gave us the money so that we could treat ourselves. We read the reviews and were certainly impressed www. beerspain.com/spa/beer-spa-alicante/ The original concept started in the city of Granada, hence the beer being Alhambra. The one is Alicante is now one of 4 such leisure facilities in Spain, the others being in Zahara de los Atunes and Tenerife in the Canary Isles. Trying to find time in our busy retirement here in Gran Alacant was going to be difficult. However, early March is my wife’s birthday and we booked for Friday the 6th March which was also the first anniversary of my wife having her aorta valve replaced in the Levante Hospital, Benidorm. We did try to book the appointment online but came up against difficulties, so we rang them and the gentleman

38

who’s name we had seen in the positive reviews, guided us through the payment process and rang us back as soon as the money transfer had arrived into the Beer spa account. We took the local bus from Sierra Azul to Alicante bus station, showing the driver proof of our age meant we were able to get the O.A.P. concession price of €1 which is excellent value. Walking through Alicante city, we noticed it was very busy with many international people, most of whom appeared to be of a similar age to ourselves as there was a cruise ship in the harbour for the day. We were very aware of the news of issues on cruise ships and the problems that were being talked about across the World, including the lock down situation just across the Balearic & Tyrrhenian sea to the North West of us in Northern Italy. We made our way to the approximate location of the beer spa, which is on Carrer Pintor Velazquez, almost immediately behind the central market, Mercat central d’Alacant. Arriving early we escaped a light shower by visiting the wonderful Mercat Market which has two floors of fresh fruit, veg, meats, fish and much more that we had forgotten since our last visit. This market opens early in the morning until 1430 and is full of wonderful and value for money produce. It is really vibrant and there are many colourful characters who

work there. The rain had stopped when we came out, so we sat in the square and enjoyed a drink watching the world and people go by. We were also joined by an Austrian couple who were visiting Alicante from the cruise ship, of course the main issue being discussed was the current medical situation in the world. Then it was time for our appointment at the Beer Spa. On arrival we walked into a beautiful reception and were met with the distinctive spa smell. We were greeted by Pablo, the gent we had read about in the reviews, and whom we had made our booking with over the phone. We were made very welcome and given a short talk by Pablo on what was to happen during the next few hours of pampering. We were given two large bath towels, locker keys for our clothes and the produce we had purchased, and last but not least, we each received a pint sized wooden tankard with a pewter lining to keep our beer cool over the next few hours. We were shown to the spotless female and adjacent male changing rooms and enjoyed a quick warm shower prior to our dip in the spa. We had been advised to bring swimming costumes and flip flops. As we were the only appointment that afternoon, we were allowed to take our mobile phone cameras inside the spa. However, if anyone else is using the facilities then a respect protocol is in place. The next move was to the spa room which had subdued lights, soft music and a two-seater spa had been made ready for us to use. In the room there are 4 of these spas as well as a larger spa that could accommodate up to 6 users. Each of the tubs had individual curtains and vanity partitions for privacy if required but being the only visitors we did not use them. As well as a timetable, we were given some advice before we entered the warm and inviting water, to which the attendant added herbs and spices associated with the production of READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com

beer. There was a personal beer tap for our use as well as local cheese and crackers to nibble on while we enjoyed the spa and beers. It was now time to relax, the attendant wished us well and departed reassuring us that he would be passing by to check on us and to see if he needed to add more water, warm things up or provide more refreshments. Pablo came in informing us that after 45 minutes in the water, the next pampering experience would be ready. He had warmed up the adjacent sauna cabin, which was almost band new, had a standard terraced seating area on two sides, and looked very inviting. Our host again advised us of the safety aspects of the cabin, and told us he would be passing by to refill our never-ending supply of Alhambra. Again we were given a timetable as to when our time in Sauna would be up, although if we had enough of the sauna and beers we could come out to rehydrate with coffee or soft drinks in the final relaxation suite. The next experience was a massage and I, having never had a massage purely for relaxation, volunteered to be first on the table. Subdued lights, soft music and scented candles added to a most relaxing atmosphere. I could choose whether the masseuse would work on my legs or back and I choose the back. Time seemed to stop as our host spent 20mins working on relaxing my back (this info from my wife). Then it was her turn and she also chose a back massage. I was so relaxed that I lay on my tummy and fell asleep. Once the massages were over, we were advised to relax for a further 10 mins before we were moved to the final relaxation suite.

40

To finish off our relaxing afternoon we were shown to a large room which had 4 double beds, whose mattresses were stuffed with hop straw (like I used to sleep on, or not! some 60 years ago at school camp on Lindisfarne Island Northumberland) and were made up with fresh linens. Each bed had tastefully folded up curtains/partitions, and we could stay here for as much time as we wished. After a while we made our way back to the changing rooms and followed the advice from Pablo about not having a shower as he had used nourishing oils on our skin during the massages. After dressing we returned the towels and tankards to main reception. Souvenir packs were available, although we were put under no pressure to buy anything. We have great memories of a wonderful and relaxing afternoon in the centre of Alicante City. We don't feel that this experience would be enjoyable for children, not for any sinister reason, we just feel that they would, in our opinion, get bored. We then enjoyed a pleasant walk through Alicante, enjoying the bustling early Friday evening atmosphere, to the central bus station and returned to Gran Alacant on the very reliable Alicante Santa Pola bus. We spent a week telling friends about what a pleasant experience we had and recommended it as a different day out ....... then came Friday 13th March, LOCKDOWN !!! We hope that when things get back to normal, you follow our advice and try this unique experience for yourselves. Jim & Susan x

Super Pink Moon by Bryan Thomas

Thank you Bryan for sending in your photo

In a rare spectacle, a "Super Pink Moon" lit up the skies around Gran Alacant on the 7th April. Ancient people thought this cosmic event was linked to the appearance of pink flowers called wild ground phlox, which bloom in early spring and appear throughout the United States and Canada. While others claimed it signified the end of the world. Although it is called a "Pink Moon" this name is deceiving because it is actually a pale shade of orange. It is a rare result of several space phenomena occurring at once and the Earth's atmosphere filtering out the blue wavelengths. My photo of the Moon that appeared over Gran Alacant doesn't do justice to just how bright orange and yellow the colours were. April's supermoon is the third of the year, following the "Worm Moon", which was on the 9th March. The next full moon is referred to as the "Flower Moon" and we will be able to see it on the 7th May. This natural phenomenon is always linked to the date of Easter because it appears after the spring equinox. Easter is always on the 4th full moon of the New Year. The "Super Moon" will also bring the largest tides of the year. This is because the closer the Moon is to Earth, the stronger the gravitational pull it exerts, this creates more variation between the tides. The distance

to the moon was 356,906 km. There may even be a correlation between the appearance of a full moon and sleep. Astrologers know this all too well. However, scientifically, it's unclear exactly how the full moon affects sleep. Research by scientists in Switzerland has found that around a full moon phase, people may take longer to fall asleep, feel sleepless, and sleep less deeply. Humans are made up of 50 to 70 percent water. As the moon controls the oceans and waters on Earth, the human body may also be affected by the lunar phases. A "Blood Moon" happens when Earth's moon is in a total lunar eclipse. While it has no special astronomical significance, the view in the sky is striking as the usually whitish moon becomes red or ruddy-brown. The last blood moon on the 20th-21st of January 2019, coincided with a supermoon and the Full Wolf Moon, earning it the title "Super Blood Wolf Moon." When are all of the Full Moons: Eclipse Moon - January 10 Snow Moon - February 9 Strawberry Moon - June 5 Buck Moon - July 5 Sturgeon Moon - August 3 Full Corn Moon - September 2 Hunter's Moon - October 1 Beaver Moon - November 30 Cold Moon - December 30 Have fun cheers, Bryan Thomas

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured RELATIONSHIPS AND THE PANDEMIC

Over the last 2 months our world has literally stood still ... we have witnessed and experienced great losses, some more personal than others and for those of you struggling with grief on top of the pandemic I would like you to know I am sending so much love and sincere reiki healing your way, your grief is a journey and process with all the different emotions rolled into the situation ... but keep in your thoughts, that there is light at the end of your tunnel. For those of you feeling frustrated at the pandemic situation, maybe it is the media annoying you, the difference in opinions on social network sites, we are all entitled to our opinions, but stay aware on your delivery of it to avoid social conflit or maybe you are just living alone 24-7 and feeling it or with your partner and kids and having never been used to this much together time before now and don´t know how to deal with this daily. We are all experiencing different waves in the emotional tide right now. But what positive impact have you learned on your relationships during the difficult time? Your relationship always starts with you!

56

Some days are a struggle if you feel lonely, or some are very hard when you have a house full and they are all vibing on different frequencies that day but the relationship with self is an important journey through this, and what positive impact are you carrying on in the future when this is all over? Think of the positive change you can bring to the table. During this time we have come to learn and adapt to new ways of communication, we have realised we don't actually need that much to find inner happiness. In our house we have had more time to talk with the friends who are normally as busy as us to catch up with, we have realised that dancing in the kitchen or doing online exercise classes can actually be quite fun when we have no other options and having little family or friend quiz nights from wherever our families are in the world is also a sign of community and togetherness. Something I would like to continue with long after the pandemic is over is these little things that really are the big things, when people make the time for each other. There have been many offering online group meditation sessions also which has definitely helped me personally find my inner calm and very important “alone” time in what is some days the mad house and I am truly grateful for such a wonderful network of connections across the globe. All the “new” social network friends who have connected with me during this has also shown that humanity still exists in the bucket loads and people are beautiful in all their own unique and special ways and we should appreciate this. We have experienced lots of kindness sent our way, our lovely neighbour taking

Desiderata

It is always important to be grateful of the little things, even the disagreements we may have some days with our partners and kids, we are grateful we still have each other to have this with.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

I can only hope anyone out there with grudges to others can now settle their differences and come to the reality we are all equals, no one is greater or lesser and we all have a right to be here, be heard, and to strive towards being kind as this is our true natural state of being. So the lesson that may be learned this month is that even when the days seem very dark and the road ahead makes you feel unsettled at the thought, there is always something to be grateful for. And if you have no one reaching out at you, reach out at them ... take the time to make the positive impact, there is always someone to reach out to ... and I am here with online sessions for the mind clinic to all who feel lost in their path. I will leave this month with my favourite poem of all times the “Desiderata by Max Ehrmann ... a beautiful gift of words to share with the world. And hope to see you all on the outside world soon. Much Love Jackie x

GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP Thank you Joanne Margereson ... Major problem There really wasn’t much space under Bren’s kitchen table. It was the first time she’d been under there for any amount of time and was slightly perturbed at the fact that the surface of the table top looked very much like ply from down here and not solid pine as promised by the store. "Move your elbow Janice," hissed Joyce. "It’s right in my face." "I can’t." Janice whispered urgently, "He’ll see me!" "Be quiet both of you," Bren gasped barely able to breathe with her knees in her chest. "The windows open. If he hears us, he’ll never go!" The clunk of the letterbox made them all jump but they stayed where they were until they heard the clopping heels of Major Rexford going down Bren’s path. Moments later three middle-aged women rolled out from under the table. On the doormat sat a thick creamy envelope. The three friends sat on the floor staring at it. "Well go on then, Bren," waved Joyce rubbing her leg to get the blood circulating again. "See what he’s complaining about this time." Only after another round of coffee had been made and all three were all seated around the table instead of under it could Bren bring herself to open the envelope. "Who’s for it now?" asked Janice, sitting forward in her seat, "There can’t be many more things to complain about." "Ducks," said Bren. "Ducks?" Joyce replied, "What about the ducks?" Bren scanned the letter. "Apparently the

60

for sending us your story ducks are causing a nuisance in his garden," Bren read, "in particular they are pulling the heads off his marigolds and leaving deposits on his path." "Deposits!" screeched Joyce, "Why doesn’t he just say..." "That’s enough Joyce." snapped Janice, "Carry on Bren." Trying to ignore Joyce’s shaking shoulders Bren continued. "He says that villagers must not encourage the ducks up from the pond. He says that as the population seems to have reached an unacceptable level, he has been in touch with a wildfowl expert who is coming to trap some and take them away." "He can’t do that," cried Joyce, no longer laughing. "What’s it got to do with him how many ducks are on the pond?” “He doesn’t even look after his own garden,” said Janice, “Mrs Rexford’s always out there with Dillon the gardener. I don’t know why she has a gardener really if she likes to look after it herself.” Joyce looked at Bren slyly. “I wouldn’t mind having him look after my petunias, eh Bren?” She gave Bren a nudge. “Have you seen his..” Giving Joyce, ‘the look’, Bren asked, “And what’s he going on about ‘encouraging the ducks?" Janice groaned. "Phoebe feeds them, I’ve seen them filing up from the pond to her garden." "Phoebe feeds everything," Bren agreed, "I don’t know how that apple tree in her garden hasn’t collapsed under the weight of all the bird feeders." Joyce stood up in alarm. "You know where

... Major problem by Joanne Margeresen, daughter of Sandra and Barry Lane he’s going now then don’t you," she said scrabbling on her cardigan. "Poor Phoebe will never cope with him having a go at her." "Come on," Bren said, "we’ll go round the back way. If we’re quick we can get to her before he does.

to calm her down. There was a notable absence in the room."

Phoebe’s garden wrapped her little cottage up in a quilt of flowers, and the small paned windows glittered beneath the neatly trimmed jasmine and climbing hydrangea. Today though the back door was shut tight against the early June warmth. The tranquil garden so full of blooms and colour seemed empty.

Bren couldn’t speak. Seeing her mouth hanging open, Phoebe explained, "Chap bit him. You know how deaf Chap is? Well he was lying in the garden fast asleep and didn’t hear the Major come in the gate. The Major knocked into him and poor Chap woke with a fright. He snapped and just caught his trouser leg. The Major said he was dangerous and he’d report me for keeping him."

"Do you think she’s ill?" said Janice as they crept through the back gate. Quietly they made their way to the door, tapping gently in case the Major should hear. "I can’t see her, can you Joyce?" Bren asked, cupping her hands on the kitchen window. I hope she’s.." The key turned in the back door and Phoebe ushered the women into her little kitchen, locking the door behind them. Gesturing madly she scooped everyone into the sitting room where she pulled the curtains tightly shut. "Phoebe," Bren said with growing alarm, "Whatever’s going on?" Phoebe flung herself into her armchair, constantly fiddling with her blonde pony tail. "Is he coming up here? The Major, is he coming? I went to the shop and saw him walking along all the houses. His hands were full of envelopes! I just left my basket and cycled back here as fast as I could." Phoebe was becoming more and more upset. Joyce was despatched to the kitchen to make tea while Janice and Bren tried

"Where’s Chap Phebs?" "He mustn’t see him Bren," she said tears spilling down her pale cheeks. "He says he’s going to get him put down."

Bren couldn’t push her words through her fury but Janice asked, "So where is Chap now?" Furtively, Phoebe got up and beckoned for them to follow her up the winding staircase to her bedroom. There, curled up on the patchwork comforter, lay the little King Charles spaniel, his wavy coated sides gently rising and falling to the rhythm of his tiny snores. Thankfully, his deafness meant that he didn’t hear the bang on the door. Phoebe’s face drained of colour. "It’s him," she hissed, "He’s come after Chap!” "It’s all right Phebs," Janice tried to explain, "We think he’s complaining about something else now but it’s probably best you don’t speak to him. Bren will won’t you Bren?" "Me," Bren spluttered, "but I.." "Oh thank you Bren," whispered Phoebe, "He just scares me so much. You’re so much braver than me." Bren couldn’t look at Janice after the kitchen table incident but not wanting to upset Phoebe even further, she went downstairs to answer the front door.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP ... Major problem

Major Rexford looked slightly taken aback when he realised Bren wasn’t Phoebe but he rallied all the same. His moustache twitched like a ginger tomcat sprawled over a hearth of white teeth and he rocked back on his heels. “I’ve just been at your house.” he barked. “I need to speak to Miss Clancy on a matter of some urgency.” “She’s not well," Bren blurted, “In fact she’s very poorly in bed so I’m afraid you can’t talk to her.” The Major narrowed his eyes and Bren almost confessed that she was lying under his steely glare but eventually he held out an envelope to her. “Give her this. I’ve put a copy in everyone’s letterbox in the village to keep all informed that they must not feed those blasted ducks. A trap will be put on the green tonight and checked at 0500 hours. Any ducks in the trap will be removed. We have to keep a check on the duck population you know, we can’t have them trampling over well tended gardens.” He clipped his sentences as efficiently as his moustache and with a stiff nod he about turned back up the garden path. Janice and Phoebe were still frozen upstairs when Bren shut the door but as soon as she heard the latch click, Phoebe bobbed frantically down the stairs, her eyes brimming with tears. “I heard him from the bedroom window,” she wept, “He’s going to take the ducks! Oh Bren, he can’t do that! What about Hopscotch who only has one foot and dear old Darcy who’s mate got run over. Elsa has ducklings, what if she goes in the trap! What will happen to them?” The three friends eventually left a fretful Phoebe who locked her door behind them once again. Separating with a promise not

62

to let any of the ducks be removed they headed home to ponder the problem. On her way, Bren saw Burt, his face red through struggling with shopping bags and his walking stick. “Here let me help you with those,” Bren called out. Burt waited for Bren to catch him up, smiling gratefully as Bren gathered up the shopping. “Why have you parked your car so far away?” she chided, “You’ll hurt yourself lugging all this across the green.” Burt lifted his stick in the direction of the Major’s house. “He complained about my car obstructing the highway. Said he’d get one of his council mates on to me if I kept parking it near the house.” “But your car isn’t on the highway Burt,” Bren complained, “No other cars come past your cottage.” “That fancy sports car does when the townies are down,” Burt glowered. “The old Major doesn’t seem to mind that being parked outside the cottages. It’s more the fact my old motor don’t fit with his ass-theticks.” Burt almost spat out the syllables. Still concerned about Burt’s wheezing, she made him sit down in his kitchen while she unpacked his shopping. A hurried tap at the back door announced the arrival of Gwen who practically barrel rolled in as soon as Bren opened it. “I daren’t let old posh drawers out there see me,” puffed Gwen, who by now was tugging alarmingly at her waistband. In fascinated horror, Bren watched until she could see that Gwen was wrestling with a bum bag concealed around her generous proportions. Finally she held aloft a small jar.

... Major problem by Joanne Margeresen, daughter of Sandra and Barry Lane “Jam!” Gwen announced triumphantly. “I made it just for you Burt but you know it has to be our little secret.” “Secret jam?” asked Bren. “What on earth is going on with you two? I thought you always sold jam in the village Gwen?” Gwen was already fishing through Burt’s shopping bags to find the muffins. “I’ve sold it for years,” Gwen explained. “The Major bought some then complained there was a cat hair in it.” Her round jovial face began to pucker. “He said he’d report me to environmental health and they’d make me get rid of the cats if I carried on making it.” Bren stood back and watched the elderly friends make their tea and muffins, complete with homemade jam. Declining their offer to join them, Bren left them to it and began to walk home, stopping for a while to sit on the bench by the pond. From her seat she could see right the way down the village, across the green and out to the little red brick cottages that nestled around it. Most of the cottages were lived in by residents that had lived there for years and it had always been a happy contented place to live. Until the Major. His house sat at one end of the village, a vast rambling pile that had been used as a vicarage many years ago. The driveway swept from the green up to the grand front door, complete with stone lions and white columns. They were all additions made by the Major. With a sigh she carried on her way and was almost at her gate when she saw Dillon driving his truck up toward the Majors house. On the back was what she supposed was a duck trap. It looked a bit like one of those triangular framed rabbit runs with a tunnel of wire netting. The sight of it made her blood boil. Bren’s blood wasn’t quite so close to boiling point at 4am the next morning as she ventured toward the duck pond in the dim dawn light. Dressed head to toe in black with a bag holding (what she hoped was) vital duck rescuing equipment; she

stopped once she could see the outline of the duck trap. Phoebe’s fears had been well founded. Inside, quacking forlornly was the duck with the wonky leg, hopping up and down the netting, looking for a way out. Hiding behind an expanse of reeds at the ponds edge, Bren fumbled in her bag for the wire cutters she’d found in the shed. “Not long now old chap,” she whispered. “I’ll have you out in time for breakfast.” Carefully, she stood and made her way to the trap but someone was already approaching from the opposite side. Behind the figure Bren could just make out Dillon’s truck. She must be too late! She started to run toward the duck trap just as the figure began to do the same. That was when all Hell broke loose. The reeds around the pond erupted with people. Black clad figures came from all directions descending on the duck trap, pushing and shoving while through all of them, a slender figure with long blonde hair streaming behind, ran like a missile, brandishing wire cutters. “LEAVE THAT BIRD ALONE,” she screamed, “No one is taking him anywhere!” “Phoebe,” cried Bren in surprise as she toppled backwards onto the mass of struggling bodies draped all over the trap. By now there were so many people trying to protect the duck that he was in serious danger of being squashed. “Joyce?” “Janice?” “Bren?” “Dillon?” It was increasingly apparent that half the village was by now on the village green armed with wire cutters and anything else they thought might be needed for a duck breakout. As Joyce, Janice, Bren and Dillon recognised each other, there were many other villagers there, all with the same motive as them. Yet there was one small figure complete with balaclava still unidentified. All eyes waited for the balaclava to be removed.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP Thank you Joanne Margereson ... Major problem “Mrs Rexford!” gasped Bren. “Ellen oh I mean, Mrs Rexford,” gaped Dillon rushing to her side. “What are you doing here? Are you hurt?” “I’m fine,” she smiled at him almost shyly, and then breaking his gaze she turned to the rest of the gathering. “Trapping the ducks wasn’t anything to do with me. I like them.” “I was never going to take them anyway,” said Dillon. “The Major said he would come down at five to see how many I’d caught. I was just going to drive off with them and bring them back later.” Bren was busily filling Mrs Rexford in with the Majors other exploits when they were interrupted by a booming voice behind them. “What on earth is going on here?” Major Rexford barged through the villagers to where his wife was standing. She pushed back her short dark hair and put her hands on her hips. “This really is the last straw Randalph,” she said firmly. “I’ve just been hearing about your horrid little letters and you threatening to have a dog destroyed. After everything that’s happened in all the other villages we’ve lived in? Every time we have to move you swear you’ll behave but you never learn.” She turned to look at Dillon and held out her hand to him. He approached her warily unsure of what was happening. “I’ve had enough Randalph,” she said decisively. “Get your things together and go.” She turned toward the assembled crowd who by now were hanging on her every word. “He’s not even a real Major.

64

for sending us your story He made it all up years ago to impress my parents. I didn’t even know until a few months ago. Dillon’s been giving me lessons on the computer and it’s amazing what you can find out. The Majors moustache was twitching overtime. “You can’t mean it Ellen,” he blustered. “You’ll never manage on your own.” “I won’t be on my own,” replied Ellen, “Dillon and I are in love. As for managing, you’ve been living off my family’s money for far too long.” Dillon put a protective arm around Ellen and smiled while the rest of the village began their own conversations. Bren thought she heard the words ‘Lady Chatterley’ coming from Joyce’s direction. Phoebe in the meantime was busily snipping wire to release a very bemused duck. It was just as the Major was beginning to head back to his house that they became aware of a brown and white streak heading in his direction. The streak manifested into a little spaniel careering after the Major who by this point had started to run. “It’s Chap,” shouted Phoebe. “Chap! This way! No Chap don’t!” With an enormous leap, Chap propelled his elderly bones upwards managing to nip the Major squarely on the buttock, at which the Major let out a squawk but kept on running. Phoebe stood with the wonky-legged duck tucked safely under one arm, smiling at her dog. “Well,” she said. “He IS deaf.”

Adventerous Bike trip through dissused tunnels, amazing scenery, no traffic & relaxing picnic ... Hi everyone, My name is Kevin and I organize the 22k downhill bike ride. I would like to give you further information on how the day is planned and share some of the stunning views on the way. We cater for up to 6 people, which keeps it quite a personal experience. We have in the past taken 2 groups of 3 people, 3 x 2 people so if you’re a single rider, please contact us anyway in case we have room for one more person. The ride takes place from Monday to Friday. All equipment is supplied, apart from suncream. The ride is suitable for any competent cyclist, although very little fitness is required. Our riders age range has been 9 years to 79 years. We pick you up in Gran Alacant, usually at 10am from your hotel, accommodation and take a 45 minute drive to Agost. We then set of down the via verde, (green way), which is a disused railway line that has been turned into a walkway / cycle path. The first section takes us through the railway tunnels, 5 in total. The first two being approx. half a km long.

68

After cycling 8 km, we stop, where the catering staff will be waiting with picnic table and chairs. All refreshments are supplied, which includes sandwiches, beer, water, soft drinks, crisps, cakes and fresh fruit. Normally this short break will be around 30 - 45 mins. The next section takes us through vineyards, olive groves and almond groves, passing oranges, lemons, figs and walnuts on the way. When the weather is really hot, we have a “pit stop” to replenish any water that is required. We normally arrive back in GA around 3.00pm, depending on how many stops you have to take photos of the amazing scenery. The day costs 50€ per person, payable on the day. Q A

How is it best to deal with the stresses that being on lockdown has created?

And suddenly, one day, the normal rhythm of life to which we were accustomed, has now changed and we are at home 24 hours a day, some of us alone, some with a partner, some with kids and some with the partner and the kids. Difficult, right? You start to think, what am I going to do with so much time? How am I going to stay locked up at home 24 hours with my partner and/or with the children? And you start to feel overwhelmed ... but don`t panic, it isn`t so serious, nor so bad to be locked up at home 24 hours alone or with your partner and children, because now is your opportunity to dedicate yourself to do things that you couldn't before because you didn't have time. Now is the moment to really communicate with your partner and your children, to really connect with them... but at the beginning it is possible to feel anxiety just thinking about all this, so I propose you do an exercise and then I’ll explain why it isn’t so bad to spend more time at home. First of all, open the window or go out on the terrace or in the garden, put one hand on your upper chest and the other on your abdomen, with the little finger above the navel. This will allow you to control your movements. Breathe in slowly through your nose, so that your hand feels pressure as it rises. The hand on the chest should remain motionless (or almost). You shouldn’t breathe so deeply that you start to hyperventilate. Take a short pause in

78

breathing before exhaling. Then slowly breathe out through the mouth, so that you feel the muscles of your abdomen descend. Remember that the hand on the chest must remain as still as possible. Repeat this a few more times. You can do this as often as you want and/or need it. Now let's try to think positive. You are going to say "yes, it is easy to say, but how do I do it?" Well answer this question: "How many times before have you thought?": Someday I will do that online Spanish course (or whatever), but I just don't have time ... or, someday I will sleep for as long as I like without the alarm clock ringing, but I can't because I have to get up at 6:30 to go to work .. or, someday I will read these books that I have unread in my library (physical or virtual) because I don’t have time ... or, someday I`ll watch all those series that I would like from Netflix, HBO or Prime Video, now I can only see them on the weekends because I never have time to watch them ... or, someday I wish I could spend more time with my partner, with my children, but where do I get it? (the time) ... or, someday I would like to have more time for myself, to talk to my new contacts on social networks or on a dating platform (if you are single) and to whom until now you have said "I`m not here a lot, because during the week I don't have time for anything "... or, I would like to think more about myself, what I feel, what I want, what I like, reflect on how I would like to live and with who ... or, someday I would like to listen to the songs of my youth, put on some headphones and dance alone, losing myself into the rhythm as if

no one saw me, but I can't afford it, I don't have time, because in the days that I have my days off I have to clean, do the washing, or finish some pending work that I couldn’t finish during the week ... Well now YOUR TIME has come, the time to do everything you would have liked to do before, but you couldn't because you didn't have time, but now you do. Now you can see that it isn`t so difficult? In fact, nothing is so difficult, and it’s easier than we think. Sometimes it’s us who make it difficult for ourselves, who make everything seem difficult. Situations, people, life itself, are how we perceive them, they are how we want them to be. So, think positive, be optimistic and learn to be resilient (get something positive and come out stronger from a painful, traumatic or dramatic situation and learn something from it) ... So exercise, do some yoga, pilates, stretching, boxing, etc. (there is a lot to choose from on YouTube), eat healthy, relax and be positive.

Q A

How do we cope with being allowed out again?

Things are not going to return to normal in a few weeks, or even a few months. Some, in fact, never will. After quarantine, we will truly appreciate all that the Covid-19 is now depriving us of. We´ll come out, or we should come out of this experience wiser, more prudent, more tolerant and more aware that we are not almighty, that we are human and vulnerable. We were happy before all this and we didn’t even realize it. We didn’t know how to value and appreciate what we had, or the people who deserved our appreciation, our respect or our love, but we´ll also be aware that we´re sensitive, supportive and patient... Some of us will be stronger and others weaker, depending on how they have been able to take advantage or cope during this long period of quarantine.

Ask Elena But what do we want to do after this? Well, simple things, not extraordinary, but we missed it: • Hugging and kissing loved ones ... • Taking off our pajamas and dressing up, going to the hairdresser (we´ll have to get a quick appointment) • Taking a long walk on the beach, or across the city ... • Going to the gym or doing exercises outside, to remove the extra kilos that we have gained whilst being locked up ... • Going out for breakfast, lunch, dinner... • Going to work without fear ... • Applying what we´ve proposed to do after the quarantine or continuing to do what we have started and have discovered that we like and that before this, we didn’t do… • Taking more care of our health, and above all, of our mental and emotional health... How do we “survive” the lockdown as a couple?

Q A

The situation that we are living in has increased our negative emotions, such as fear, grief, helplessness, frustration and anger. To totally coexist with a partner is an added stressor, since, no matter how good our relationship is, we are not used to living together 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. This is a breeding ground for possible disagreements and possibly, with greater intensity between partners. The presence of other stressors (combining teleworking with a partner, performing household chores, disputes about knowing "who has more work", using common spaces, managing one's own emotional state and from the other, etc.) can facilitate a possible discussion. This is a challenge that will test the stability and later continuity of many couples. But can we approach it in another way? Can we consider this as a journey to overcome as a team? This is possible as long as we

Want to ask Elena a question??..

Lda. Elena Blanaru Lucanu is a general psychologist at Gran Alacant Family Doctors 24h

Every month she will try to answer your questions, your name will be kept in the strictest confidentiality

T: +34 610 684 970 I Email: elenablanaru@cop.es accept that to achieve this, first of all, we must be realistic, we must normalize that we all have a state of "feeling down" at some point. We´ll have days when we´ll be more positive and have more energy and others when we´ll feel apathetic, frustrated or anxious. If we accept that we all experience negative emotions and are able to manage them properly, we can prevent a "detonation". That is, a mismanaged outburst of anger, which would probably lead to a high-voltage discussion or argument. Here are some guidelines to help prevent this situation during what remains of our confinement: Express feelings: There are couples who talk about everything, but without "emotional intimacy". That is, they explain things from day to day, share experiences with friends, children, etc. but they do not express what emotions they are feeling. For example, concerns about the relationship appear, but they prefer to try to normalize the day-to-day, and avoid confronting a delicate subject that could make them feel uncomfortable. Obviously, there are conflicts that accumulate and then appear suddenly due to any discussion. Confinement is a good time to share your feelings with your partner. As always, choose a good moment when both of you can reflect out loud how you’re feeling in this situation, or any other issue. It’s important not to judge what your partner explains to you, since it’s a "gift" that they open his/her heart to you and share his/her intimate feelings with you. It would be ideal

80

to express support and empathy for what is expressed to you. And if what you hear concerns you, try to respond (not react) calmly, respectfully and tolerantly (tolerance is very important in situations like this). Respect the privacy of the other and defend your own: As it would be done without being in lockdown, it’s healthy for each partner to enjoy some space to carry out those activities that they like to do for themselves alone, like reading, practicing yoga, writing, meditating, painting, sewing, talking with friends or family ... or just "being alone", without having to do anything or sharing this moment. Caring for your sex life: Day to day, routine, stress, etc., can interfere with a healthy and satisfying sex life. So let's take advantage of these days at home to have sexual experiences that appeal to both of you, discovering new experiences in new places in the house, using sex toys etc. Also, if your sexual desire before confinement was low, you can take advantage of this time to find yourself using massages, with creams or oils that you have at home, look for information about erotic massages ... and little by little, with privacy and practice, the desire will reappear within the couple. We are experiencing an exceptional situation that tests our resistance, both individually and as a couple. We cannot avoid it, but it is up to us to choose how to live it.

What is Microblading? workouts, swimming, or washing your face with water for a whole week. If you get them wet, the scab comes off too early and you just lose the pigment. While your brows will be long lasting, between18-24 months, clients should have realistic expectations and understand the brows will naturally fade and need a retouch possibly every year. Treatment takes approximately 2 hours.

I am fully certified beauty therapist based in Gran Alacant (located in front of Santara Resort). Microblading is a technique which helps modify the color, shape, and density of your natural eyebrows, Inserting natural and hypoallergenic pigment just under the epidermis, leaving a very realistic 3D hair by hair effect.

Unlike a regular tattoo, microblading is a form of tattoo artistry where pigment is implanted under your skin with a manual handheld tool instead of a machine, hairlike strokes are drawn with the tool to mimic your natural hairs in the brows. Anasthetic cream is always applied as some clients feel more discomfort than others but overall it feels like little scratches. Aftercare means protecting freshly bladed brows from all moisture. Out & About with Star & Ashlee “Staying in” with Star & Ashlee ...

Hi everyone, well here we are again writing about our continuing time in lockdown. It has been difficult for everyone but all our friends and family have helped keep our spirits up with video calls and playing online games. Thank goodness for the internet!!! Ashlee has continued to do her school work at home and after a break for Easter the lessons are now online and more interactive which has made it a lot more interesting for her and less stressful for me. Bravo teachers!! During the last few weeks we have enjoyed waving to our neighbours whilst showing our support for the health care/ pharmacy/supermarket and petrol station workers for the nightly 8pm applause. Even if we can’t see everybody it has been great to hear everyone around us joining in by clapping, shouting, cheering, banging pots and blowing horns. It really lifts your spirits!!! We were also happy to see the Police when they drove around GA thanking everyone for staying inside, telling us that we are all champions and giving us “muchas abrazos” (lots of hugs). We put our beach tent on the roof and Ashlee had lots of fun playing with her barbies and reading her David Walliams book, the Midnight Gang. She has also come up with some designs for her face for Halloween and enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt around the house.

98

As well as enjoying video calls, Ashlee and her best friend Miriam have also done some online exercises with Joe Wicks. They had lots of fun and have also joined other friends to play online games together. This has really helped them all feel less isolated. On the night of the 7th April we went up to the roof and took some fun pictures with the Super Pink Moon. (You can read more about these special moons in another article in the magazine).

Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE

The 26th April was a momentus day as after 44 days inside Ashlee was finally allowed to leave the house and go for a walk!! She was super excited and we enjoyed an hours walk around the campo and streets near our house.

We saw Michelle and Miriam and although it was hard not to hug, we kept 2 metres apart and loved seeing each other without looking at a screen!!! Being confined to home has really made us appreciate the beauty of our surroundings and the views of the beach and sea. It was great to get closer to nature again and Ashlee really enjoyed hugging one of the trees. We also made a sign which we hung from the roof during the 3 minutes silence at 1200 on the 19th April as a sign of respect for those who have passed during this pandemic. Our sign read “Nos mantenemos en silencio como respeto por aquellos que han muerto durante este tiempo.” Which means

At the moment it looks like everyone will soon be allowed to go outside for exercise and the restrictions will slowly start to be lifted. Ashlee and I want to thank everyone who has followed the necessary guidelines and helped to keep Gran Alacant safe. We are all in this together and hope we will soon be able to start moving around more freely again. Until then, stay safe and healthy. “We stand in silence as respect for those who have died during this time”

Until then, stay safe and healthy. Star & Ashlee

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

Sierra de Bernia

Driving Time: 70 mins Walking Time: 0-4 hours depending on your choice Google maps directions: area recreativa font de la barca

My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. We are still living in lockdown as we are writting this but hopefully we will soon have the freedom to enjoy this wonderful hike. Set your Google Maps to “area recreativa font de la barca” in Altea, on the side of Sierra de Bernia! Even if you don’t wanna do any hiking, you can enjoy the spectacular landscapes from the picnic area. The tarmac road uphill is brand new as one of the legs of cycling competition “Volta a la comunitat valenciana” ended there this February. While you drive uphill you can imagine what a climb it has been like for those in the competition or those who try to cycle up there “just for fun”. From the Font de la Barca you have multiple possibilities where to go. There’s a map of the area which you can’t miss. I suggest you take a photo of it to your mobile phone. First we chose to go up hill left to Font del Runar. Everything is marked with the

106

signposts so well. PR CV 7 up higher to the mountain was smaller path with loose debris. You have to have good boots and have a head that can tolerate walking long ways next to steep fall. I don’t have that head, so we had to turn back at some point. If you continue the PR CV 7 to your right,

you get to the cave paintings in Penya de l’Ermita del Vicari. These cave paintings date to the Neolithic era (the New Stone Age). We headed back to the picnic area, had some snacks and chose to continue with the path PR CV 436 (right from the rest

THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

area) which was so much easier to walk on. It being mostly a dirt road. We walked bit under 3 km and came to a signpost which gave an option to go up to the Forat de Bernia, which is the iconic triangle shaped cave on top of Sierra de Bernia. You guessed it. As soon as the shielding trees stopped growing, me legs got shaking. We had to turn around again. For all of you who have a better head for heights than me, I highly recommend taking PR CV 436 from the rest area, climbing up to Forat de Bernia, continue PR CV 7 to the cave paintings (continuing to the direction of the rest area) and keep going until you reach the Font del Runar and return to the rest area. You get a nice round route and not so much steepness as if you do the circular path of PR CV 7 on top of the mountain. I’m really kicking myself for not being able to do that. But even just arriving to the rest area and seeing the landscape would have made my day. Stunning!

Wishing you all strength to stay at home and hoping that we’ll all be back in nature very soon! Heidi & Olli x

CHECK LIST

Always when going on hikes check that:

• Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad ide • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

“Moroccan Chicken Skewers” Let’s Start! We cut the chicken breast into pieces, about 2.5 cm approximately, and put them in a container. Add the finely chopped garlic and onion together with the spices and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, mix well. Cover and store in the fridge for a few hours, I always do it the day before. If you do not have metal skewers, you can use wooden skewers. If you are using wooden skewers coat them in a little bit of oil, it will make meat easier to slide off the skewers when ready to eat. When ready to cook, transfer the marinated chicken to skewers. Put on the very hot griddle and cook the skewers on both sides. Do not throw the onion and the remaining dressing in the container, you will also cook it and serve it together with the pinchitos and some pieces of bread. These chicken skewers are eaten with a slice of bread in one hand and the skewer in the other, or you can also have them as a main dish, accompanied by a couscous, to which you can add the onion and the dressing of the remaining skewers, cooked on the griddle. Awesome! Hope you all enjoy Lots of love Mayka x

Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. Gandhi Never before in our life times have we lived through such times as we experience now, with most of us still estranged from family and friends, unsure of our futures, be it concern over loved ones, our own ,our incomes, our communities and our world at large. For many of us and especially for those of us living alone our pets have helped us maintain some level of sanity and well being, be it in walking, talking and stroking them, and just the very reason to get up and feed them.

Like many people I have been visualising the new kind of world I would like to wake up in when all this is over, based on love, wisdom, compassion, caring, kindness and consideration for all of nature and its living creatures, where we endeavour to live in harmony and to use the best that it is to be human beings to ensure that our planet and all its wildlife thrives alongside us And so too the birds, the cicadas, the bees, the ants and the butterflies have helped keep me joyful and positive. What a joy that they seem to be flourishing at this time. To hear and see so much abundance around us, and to have the time to really listen, watch and absorb the wonder around.

Animals as Teachers • 60 % of marine fish stocks are at capacity 33% are being fished at unsustainable levels • 100 million sharks are killed every year and they are now an endangered species • An area of Amazon rainforest roughly the size of a football pitch is being cleared every minute • Birds are facing a crisis, 14% are at risk of extinction, with overall numbers plumetting worldwide. In the UK there are now half as many in the countryside as there were 40 years ago (house sparrow declined by 70 % and the tree sparrow by 95%). Literally millions of birds are killed worldwide by guns, plastic and wastes, nets, traps and glue in trees • 1 in 4 mammals are at risk of extinction ( 2019 Global Assessment Report ) Currently it is land and sea over use, over fishing, intensive agriculture, and urbanisation that has caused the greatest decline, but it is expected that pollution and climate change may become more devastating, and of course they are interlinked. This culture is causing immense damage, and our demands are more than the earths resources can carry. We are part of an incredible, varied and everchanging creation and there is much to celebrate in it but for all its wonder, we also inhabit a world of terrible pain and suffering …. “ The conch horn has been blown and there is no longer an excuse to continue life as usual. WE MUST CHANGE OUR PRACTICES “ (Ruth Valero, Global Advocacy and influencing Director of Tearfund )

We look up to the vastness of the skies, the sun opens our eyes to a world lit in colour and clarity, The moon and stars remind us of a steadfast presence, amid the seasons of darkness ... And our community ‘s moments of uncertainty Show us from beginning to end the light of love, endless, as the heavens above Give us faith that through the spirit within us, we will seek to care for every creature As we dream and bring forth a brighter future, wrapped in the fullness of joy A new creation. SENSE-IBLE advice from the experts PROTECTING our eyesight has come into sharp focus as Spain continues to work and socialise from home during lockdown. Specsavers Ópticas’ eye health experts are urging caution around the undue strain that staring for hours at a computer screen, excessive use of smart devices, overdosing on TV, back-to-back tele and video conferencing and face-timing family and friends, will place on people’s senses in their bid to beat boredom and keep themselves entertained. The optician’s eye health experts have devised an at-home health guide packed with advice and tips to help the nation protect their eyes at this difficult time. AVOIDING EYE STRAIN Working on a laptop, using a mobile to keep in touch with loved ones and abreast of the news or settling down to a box set with your family – daily screen time is likely to increase dramatically in the coming weeks. Specsavers Ópticas optometrist and store director Amrik Sappal says: ‘As we’re mostly confined to our homes and with 99.5% of Spanish households owning a television, it’s no stretch to assume many of us will spend more time in front of a screen. ‘But eyes are not designed to be fixated on a single object for a long period of time so can often become strained when we focus on screens, especially if they are a smaller laptop, tablet or smart device screens. ‘While eye strain is uncomfortable, it is not usually serious, and tends to alleviate once you rest your eyes. Symptoms to look out

122

for include eye discomfort, headaches, sore, tired, burning or itchy eyes, difficulty focusing, watery eyes, dry eyes, blurred or double vision, and increased sensitivity to light.’ To combat these common eye concerns Sappal advises people to: Rest your eyes - Follow the 20:6:20 rule. Look up from your screen every 20 minutes and look at something 6 meters away for at least 20 seconds. Looking into the distance helps relax the focusing muscles of your eyes, which in turn reduces eye fatigue. This rule is also important for parents who have children being schooled online at home. Monitor how much screen time they have each day and make sure that they have regular breaks. Reduce glare - Reflections on your computer screen can cause glare and lead to eye strain. Try reducing this by attaching an anti-glare screen to your monitor, or covering windows to avoid external light shining onto the screen.

rich in eye-health boosting nutrients. Here are some great options to put into your basket • Spinach and kale, for example, are rich in Lutein, which is essential to functioning eyes. • Oily fish such as salmon, is packed full of Omega3, which is great for overall health including the eyes. Go green - Incorporating the colour green into our home working environment is good for our eyes, brain and wellbeing. Colour expert, author and influencer, Martha Roberts, explains: ‘Green has the reputation for being a colour of balance and tranquillity and because it sits in the centre of the colour spectrum it’s the easiest colour for us to see because our eyes don’t need to adjust to it, meaning it has relaxing, soothing and restorative properties.’

• Kiwi gives a burst of A, B and C vitamins, which help maintain healthy cells and tissues in the eyes. • Eggs have antioxidant properties which can reduce your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.

SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR While most eye conditions are minor, if you experience any of the following it’s important to get in touch with your local optometrist. • • • •

Redness, pain or discomfort Blurred vision Flashes of light An increase in the number of visible floaters • Sudden loss of vision Although Specsavers is currently closed to business as usual, stores will continue to provide urgent support and advice to the public over the phone. • Meanwhile, peppers contain zeaxanthin, which helps to absorb potentially damaging types of light. It’s also good general health advice to keep your water bottle topped up, particularly when you are stuck indoors, as good hydration can help avoid dry eye. And of course, picking up good habits and cutting out the bad ones, like smoking, will also protect your eyes.

SARDINIAN WARBLER a little more difficult by telling you about a bird which is quite common in our area, but which might take you a bit more effort to see.

I recently dusted off my old guitar for something to do in the current situation, and discovered that I had turned into a very bad guitarist. I am pleased to report that after weeks of practice, I am back to being a very mediocre guitarist, and I still can’t play an Em7add11 chord.* I was also rather disgruntled that almost the very moment I sent off my last GA Advertiser article (which you might remember, involved some species of birds that you can only find in the depths of the Clot) the whole thing was rendered null and void by the lockdown. It will go down on record as the most utterly pointless article I’ve ever written. Sorry about that, but now I hope I can help you maintain your interest in wildlife, and over the next few months I can point you in the direction of some interesting things you will still be able to see from your house or flat during the current unpleasantness. There is a temptation to talk about the easy stuff – sparrows, starlings and pigeons – which anyone can see from their balcony or window, but I’ve decided to make things

If you are fortunate enough to have a garden, or even a few large potted plants dotted around outside your home, you will almost certainly have been visited by the little chap in my photograph. He’s a Sardinian Warbler, one of the most widespread birds of Iberia, and often the first indication you will have that he’s about will be a harsh loud rattle from deep in the undergrowth. He also has a scratchy song, which is often heard at this time of year, but the best sighting you are likely to get is of him diving into the cover of your plants. But keep watching, because during the breeding season the males are always keen to advertise, and you may get a view of him singing away at the top of one of your shrubs to attract a mate. The female is a much duller, greyer bird, but she will also have that distinctive red eye. They feed on insects and small spiders, so they are useful in keeping the nasties away from your plants. If you have a large garden, you might even be lucky enough to have a nesting pair deep in your shrubbery! They are resident in our area all year round, but back in the UK they are very rare indeed, with only one or two seen each year. *OK, if you got that joke I am very impressed! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HOT TUBS Hot tubs have been used for years as a way to recharge and strengthen the body. There are many health benefits to be gained from using one, even if people aren’t fully aware of them. We have put together some of the more commonly reported benefits of hot tub use. YOU’LL SLEEP BETTER Using a hot tub will help you to sleep better. This is because when your body is colder, it is harder to get to sleep. A hot tub heats the body up to a much better temperature, and this helps you to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep. The more REM sleep you can get the better, as it improves all kinds of things in your daily life, so using a hot tub is recommended for sleep issues. THE STRESS AND ANXIETY YOU MAY FEEL WILL GO A great thing about the hot tub is that it relaxes you. This sensation, coupled with a feeling of weightlessness, can help to reduce stress in the body and make you calmer. This will allow you to experience reduced levels of stress and anxiety, so it’s well worth taking a bit of time to sit and soak in the hot tub. YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE CAN GO DOWN This is something that is very helpful for those suffering from high blood pressure, as the use of a hot tub can help it to go down. This is because as the water warms up the body, it causes the blood vessels to dilate and circulate more. This can decrease the resistance against the heart, which will cause your blood pressure to lower. IT CAN HELP TO PREVENT MIGRAINES Another health benefit of using hot tubs on a regular basis is that it can aid in the prevention of migraines. A common trigger for a headache is tension, which is what the hot tub removes. Many people who suffer from migraines have reported that they get tension-based headaches just before, which acts as a sort of early warning system. The hot tub is designed to relax the muscles, which reduces contraction in the body, and helps to alleviate aches and pains, which makes the chances of a tension-based migraine much less. GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY Writing this in the middle of April we already know lockdown is extended to 26 April but there is every indication that there will be a further extension to 10 May. All we wish to do at this time is to extend our sincere hope that everyone stays well and healthy by continuing to follow the special measures introduced by Government.

When: the formal Society Day is Tuesday’s weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together on Friday’s weekly which has always been a Gentleman’s Day.

As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you.

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL Weekly Sessions every Thursday 11:30 – 13:00 at the Jose Antonio Aleman Valero Sports Centre on Av. Escandinavia (next to the outdoor market).

The Walking Football Session on Thursday 12th/March was the final session before the Spanish Government lockdown. Another good turnout (over 20 players coming and going) with our now normal earlier start of 11:30 and three teams playing round-robin matches. Harry brought the last of his oranges, for this year, for us all to enjoy during our interval breaks. Only a few remained for our group photo at the end of the session. After the session, the normal après-futbol was enjoyed by players and partners at La Piedra.

As the CORONAVIRUS SITUATION develops we will keep players informed of the reopening of sports facilities via our facebook page and email.
