Hello everybody!

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

Just a few words to let you know what is happening in Santa Pola and its surroundings this month. To start with, Santa Pola’s Town Hall offers its cultural programme for all tastes you can check all the programmes on our website: www.santapolaturismo.es Apart from all this, on the 16th of July the fishermen celebrate their main fiestas, “Our Lady of Carmen” in the evening with a religious procession followed by a display of fire works on Levante Beach later on. On the 8th of July the XXIII International Swimming Crossing Tabarca-Santa Pola will take place, it is a real adventure for 1600 swimmers! This swim crossing has become the most popular in Spain; this year we have participants from 14 countries and of course from all over the Spain. In the surrounding areas, you can enjoy plenty of parades of Moors and Christians - as you know it is not possible to give the

exact dates but the approximate dates are as follows: Rojales and Orihuela 15th to 18th, Cox, Guardamar del Segura 20th to 25th, Albatera, Novelda 19th to 25th, Almoradi, Agost from 20th to 30th. Also in Denia you can join in to celebrate the peculiar fiesta of “Bous a la Mar” bulls to the sea from 7th to 15th. This fiesta is declared of international tourist interest. Furthermore, if you missed the spectacular Bonfires of St John you can visit San Vicente del Raspeig from19th to 22nd to get a taste of what it is like. Finally, in Torrevieja from 22nd to 28th the International Contest of Habaneras & Polyphony is held. If you are fond of this type of music, this is your festival to visit! The first week in August, we’ve got parade of Moors and Christians in Aspe. Enjoy the summer, Bye bye friends.

Hi everyone, The weather has finally settled and the beach is filling up. We hope you are all ready for a great summer in Gran Alacant. The bars and restaurants have lots of entertainment organized for you all, we are sure you won’t be disappointed by the variety of places to go to eat and drink. The Pena Grande has closed and the children's playground next to it has been removed plus the area is now looking derelict after just a few weeks. Also what are they doing to the area in front of the castle? No trees hardly any seats and definitely no shade. The have turned the area into a concrete waste ground. Is the council wanting to turn tourists away? Many thanks, Lesley

Town hall Answer: First of all, about the Peña Grande issue, that bar had a business licence which allowed it to be in that place (the place is not a municipal one, but a Ministry’s one) until 2012. The manager and the Town Hall, back in 2015 (before June, which is important to be considered), asked the Ministry to give another licence to the bar by saying that a public concurrence and its proper project (which they did not carry out) were going to be done.

Regarding to the Glorieta, all the tree recipients that have been there, until a few weeks ago, were harmed and full of insects and bugs. In addition, there was a problem with the water pipes that gave water supply to the trees, because so much water was wasted (there were some damaged pipes which caused some little pools right in front of the ice cream shop named as La Ibense). As a result the trees were near to death and it is important to know that those trees are now in the greenhouse in order to be revitalized again. Those are the reasons why the Town Hall has eliminated all these recipients, and will set new ones, which will be able to be moved when needed, providing the opportunity to organize some events at the Glorieta, giving the tourists the chance to enjoy with our events right in front of our most important identity sign: the castle of Santa Pola. Q: More flowers in Gran Alacant Hi Lou, Ged, I hope you are both well. I know I have emailed previously about this issue but I was wondering if you could please highlight it again with our local Councillor at your next meeting.

The Ministry gave that licence, which has lasted until May 2017, and that is why now the Peña Grande is not opened at least in that place, because the manager has transferred its business to the Glorieta now. Nowadays, the proper project has been done, and very soon we will have another business in that wonderful place (another company has acquired the right to set a

Why can't there be more planting in GA? The paths ARE wide enough to take flowerpots & trees, which would make a HUGE difference to the area & help ease the "concrete jungle" look of the area. I am just back from a trip to Marbella and the difference compared to GA is unbelievable. The photos attached of the clean streets and colourful flowers are in stark contrast to GA. I know there were some trees planted on the corner of some of the roads at the top of the hill near why I live but they have died and look worse than when there were no trees!!! Also on our last visit to GA the main road into GA, Avenue Mediterraneo, did not look great . . .again I have attached some pictures of the weeds that are not being cleared out. These areas should have gorgeous flowers in them NOT weeds! Also the trees at the start of Ave Mediterraneo should have flowers around them. It is very hard to look at GA and see that it has so much more potential to look beautiful but nothing is being done about it What are our local taxes being spent on?? Thanks for taking this issue on board Keep up the great work with the GA Advertiser, Best wishes, Fiona Town hall Answer: The Town Hall also thinks that a proper reforestation must be done in Gran Alacant, and we are preparing a public concurrence (the price of these kind of actions is near the 30.000 euros) in order to do it. Furthermore, two teams of public workers are being settled up in order to clean all the places, regarding to the weeds, because the summer is coming, and all preventive actions are going to be taken in order to avoid possible fires. Q: Abandoned Cars For fifteen years I have owned a property in Altomar Two. During the summer months, especially, parking is at a premium within the area. For the last three years I have tried, without success, to get three abandoned vehicles removed from the gated community. Liaising with Gestifinca, the administrators for Altomar Two, I have provided Registration numbers of the vehicles, photographs and the name and address of the person who owns all three vehicles. To date our administrators have taken no action, the vehicles still take up valuable parking spaces, look very unsightly and make this part of the urbanization look like a junk yard! Additionally, because three valuable parking spaces are taken up by the irresponsible action of the owner of the vehicles, other property/car owners are forced to park outside of the secure gated area. I would be pleased to hear, through the Gran Alacant Advertiser, if this is a general problem within the area and what action might be suggested to resolve the problem? Town hall Answer: Related to this hot issue, the Town Hall cannot do anything if the administrators do not ask us to, because all the roads and the streets within the urbanization are private. However, if you are so kind to give us the registration number of the cars and some pictures of them, we will be honoured to try setting up a solution, transferring your complaint to the Police Department.

BARRYâ€™S BITS OF NEWS: Writing this at mid June and wondering when this weather will settle. Sunday June 10th we all woke up to sand everywhere! More sand in the rain from the Sahara, would think the desert will soon be empty of sand! *********

As we all know, parking in Santa Pola, especially in the summertime is a bit of a nightmare. So, on the seafront, roads have been closed and pedestrianised. As you can see from the picture, around 20 car parking spaces are now unusable, cut off by barriers. ********** We may seem to go on and on about weeds around the urbanisation. This is one of the things that spoils Gran Alacant, especially in view of holidaymakers. How high do weeds have to go, before someone responsible notices. This main clump is now nearly up to the top of the walls. ********** This is the time of the year when opportunists come knocking on your door asking for money. Either for charity or

because they have been locked out and need money for a locksmith. Plus many other scams. Give no money to anyone, out here in Spain there are no collectors for charity. ********** I would like to make an observation about M.A.B.S. Cancer Support in the area. The team are not allowed to publicise what they do to help people who are suffering with cancer. If you have or are having help from the group, please consider writing to this magazine to let others know what M.A.B.S. did to help you. You do not have to include your name if you prefer not to. M.A.B.S. Hatter Party at Aquarius! Raised 439€

What fantastic support M.A.B.S. had for the M.A.B.S. Hatter Party! The sun shone on the guests with all their fancy hats. We did nothing but laugh at all the faces of passers by as they were thinking what’s going on at Aquarius. Home baked cakes and posh sandwiches were enjoyed and washed down with wonderful pink cava. All in aid of the M.A.B.S. Hospice Fund. Thank you Denise for being chief raffle ticket seller and the delightful Alison for choosing the winners in the hat competition. Mary from our fat club made a fabulous coffee and walnut cake which was auctioned and made 10 euros. The lovely Helen made some amazing baby fairy cakes. The new owners of Brothers bar lent us their cake stands, people passing by gave donations for charity and any cakes left were given for a donation of their choice. Aquarius sponsored the event and handed over their spotlessly clean kitchen to work in. Thank you all little helpers who sweated in the kitchen while I swanned around outside front of the house. The amount you all helped us to raise was 439€.

M.A.B.S . Royal Wedding party at Dick Turpins! Raised 300€

The Royal wedding hit Gran Alacant at Dick Turpins with all proceeds going to the M.A.B.S. Hospice fund ladies came dressed in their best bib and tucker to watch the wedding on the five screens surrounding the bar. A wonderful buffet was put on by Helen the manageress and of course my favourite lady Margaret Smith. Cava and strawberries and a table full of cakes and sandwiches were quickly devoured by a packed bar. A most brilliant afternoon was had by all and the lovely Helen said anytime we need a bar to host an event Dick Turpins and all their staff and Margaret Smith will be there to welcome us. The amount raised is 300€to go to M.A.B.S.

Thank you all so much for all your support for this crazy event. M.A.B.S. needs you all if we are to get our hospice. Jean x 8

Todas las fotos se pueden ver en la Información redactada en Ingles P: Santa Pola Buenas tardes. Vivo en Santa Pola y me gustaría saber qué está pasando en nuestra ciudad. Pena Grande se ha cerrado y el área de juegos para niños de al lado se ha eliminado, el área ahora parece abandonada, después de solo unas pocas semanas. Además, ¿qué están haciendo frente al castillo? No hay árboles, apenas asientos y definitivamente no hay sombra. Han convertido el área en un vertedero de concreto. ¿El Consejo quiere rechazar a los turistas? Muchas gracias. Lesley Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: En primer lugar, sobre el tema de Peña Grande, ese bar tenía una licencia comercial que le permitía estar en ese lugar (el lugar no es municipal, sino de un ministerio) hasta 2012. El Gerente y el Ayuntamiento, de vuelta en 2015 (antes de junio, que es importante considerar),solicitó al Ministerio que le otorgue otra licencia al bar diciendo que se iba a realizar una concurrencia pública y su proyecto iba a ser apropiado (que no se llevó a cabo). El Ministerio otorgó esa licencia, que duró hasta mayo de 2017, y es por eso que ahora no se abre la Peña Grande (al menos en ese lugar, porque el Gerente ha transferido ahora su negocio a la Glorieta). Hoy en día, se ha realizado un proyecto más adecuado y muy pronto tendremos otro negocio en ese lugar maravilloso (otra empresa ha adquirido el derecho de establecer un bar en ese lugar durante el verano, al ser la primera empresa entre la concurrencia pública hecha por el Ayuntamiento, después de hablar con el Ministerio para que se autorizara su apertura. En cuanto a la Glorieta, todos los receptores de los árboles que han estado allí, hasta unas pocas semanas, fueron dañados y llenos de

insectos. Además, había un problema con las tuberías que daban agua a los árboles, porque se desperdiciaba mucha agua (había algunas tuberías dañadas que causaban algunas pequeñas piscinas justo en frente de la heladería llamada La Ibense). También esos árboles, probablemente debido a este tipo de problemas, estaban prácticamente muertos. Es importante saber que esos árboles están ahora en el invernadero para recuperarse nuevamente. Esas son las razones por las que el Ayuntamiento ha eliminado a todos estos destinatarios, y establecerá otros nuevos, que podrán trasladarse cuando sea necesario, brindando la oportunidad de organizar algunos eventos en la Glorieta, brindando a los turistas la oportunidad de disfrutar con nuestros eventos justo en frente a nuestro símbolo de identidad: el Castillo de Santa Pola. P: Más flores en Gran Alacant Hola Lou y Ged Espero que los dos estén bien. Sé que he enviado un correo electrónico con anterioridad sobre este tema, pero me preguntaba si se podría volver a mencionarlo a nuestro Consejero local en la próxima reunión. ¿Por qué no puede haber más plantaciones en GA? Los senderos son lo suficientemente anchos como par colocar macetas y árboles, lo que haría una GRAN diferencia en el área y ayudaría a aliviar el aspecto de "jungla de concreto" de la zona. Acabo de regresar de un viaje a Marbella y la diferencia en comparación con GA es increíble Las fotos adjuntas de las calles limpias y coloridas, las flores que contrastan con GA. Sé que había algunos árboles plantados en la esquina de algunos de los caminos en la cima de la colina cerca de donde vivo, pero han muerto y se ven peor que cuando no había árboles.

Es muy difícil mirar a GA y ver que tiene mucho más potencial para lucir hermosa, pero no se está haciendo nada al respecto ¿En qué se gastan nuestros impuestos locales? Asimismo, se están estableciendo dos equipos de trabajadores públicos para limpiar todos los lugares, en relación con las malezas, porque se acerca el verano y se tomarán todas las medidas de prevención para evitar posibles incendios. P: Coches abandonados en Altomar 2 Durante quince años he tenido una propiedad en Altomar 2. Durante los meses de verano, especialmente, el estacionamiento es un bien escaso dentro del área. Durante los últimos tres años, intenté, sin éxito, sacar tres vehículos abandonados de la comunidad. Dada la relación con Gestifinca, los administradores de Altomar 2, proporcioné los números de

registro de los vehículos, las fotografías, el nombre y la dirección de la persona que posee los tres vehículos. Hasta ahora, nuestros administradores no han tomado ninguna medida, los vehículos aún ocupan valiosos espacios de estacionamiento, se ven muy desagradables y hacen que esta parte de la urbanización parezca un depósito de chatarra. Además, debido a que estos espacios de estacionamiento están ocupados por la acción irresponsable del propietario de los vehículos, otros propietarios de automóviles se ven obligados a aparcar fuera del área cerrada, que es la más segura. Me complacería escuchar, a través de vosotros Gran Alacant Advertiser, si este es un problema general dentro del área y qué acción podría sugerirse para resolver el problema. Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: En relación a este tema, el Ayuntamiento no puede hacer nada al respecto si los administradores no lo solicitan, ya que tanto las calles, como los caminos de la urbanización son privados. Sin embargo, si es tan amable de brindarnos el número de registro de los automóviles y algunas fotos de ellos, tendremos el honor de intentar establecer una solución, transfiriendo su queja al Departamento de Policía. P: Señal de tráfico incorrecta Hola. ¿Podría alguien notificarle al Ayuntamiento que Puerto Marino está a la derecha en esta rotonda junto al supermercado Consum? Respuesta del Ayuntaminto: Su observación ha sido transferida al Departamento de Tráfico para poder resolverla lo antes posible. The very delighted winner was Terry Cottle. He was even more delighted when he was told he could keep the cup, as it was the last Presidents Cup competition.

Bowling and social members enjoyed a day trip to the cave village of Alcala del Jucar. First stop was coffee in the charming historical town of Almansa. After a lovely walk along the banks of the river Jucar we went for lunch. We all enjoyed a lovely three course lunch in a mountain top restaurant with amazing views. Thank you to the ladies of the social committee for organising a enjoyable day trip. VCL league Wednesday 30th May Monte Mar Lords were away to Country Bowls Herons. A good result for the Lords winning on four rinks. bowls, one on Saturday afternoon and one on Sunday morning. A total of twelve games were played with two points for each game. Scores were level at eleven points all, with one game still to be finished. With the last bowl of the game Indalo scored the winning shot and edged the series by thirteen points to eleven. After the game many of us had lunch together at the Belfry which was a fitting end to a successful weekend for both clubs. Next year we are due to visit Indalo. Monday 4th June Monte Mar Torros v La Siesta Hornets A good win for the Torros after a close game. Well done to the winning teams of Sheila Roberts, Phil Goble and skip Jan Gatward, Jean Chamberlian, Joe Ridley skip Diane Ridley. Shots Torros 88 – 95 Hornets Points Torros 8 – 6 Hornets Monday 11th June Monte Mar Torros v El Rancho Buckskins We had stressful hour before the start of the match, as we had to find three replacements bowlers as a result of three different mishaps to team members. When we got underway on a lovely sunny morning we had a great mornings bowling. While the Torros had a important win to keep them top of the league,the Buckskins played there part in an excellent match. The Torros won on five rinks, so well done to everyone for a great performance. The boys slowed as they walked towards the Theme Park entry gates. Daniel and Tom had been friends since..: forever. Although they had grown up together and were now at school together, they were from very different backgrounds.

back to Daniel on the way home. The boys headed for the big rides. The cartoon stuff was something they had enjoyed when they were younger, but now, as teenagers, the thrill rides were their favourite pastime and the reason for coming here.

Daniel was the only son of a hi-flying professional couple, with a big house, more cars than they needed and a cabin in the country.

Their first target was the ”Big Splash”. The top attraction this year and already the queues were forming. They had ridden it before and the adrenaline rush was addictive. Each time, they ran back to the start of the line, or perhaps sneaked under the rope to jump the queue.

Tom had no real parents. They had separated before he could remember and although his mother had tried, she had given him up into the care system. His foster parents were OK but he never really bonded with them, although he was grateful for the efforts they had made in trying to move him up in the world, even getting into him the Pre School where he first encountered Daniel. They were both very similar in height and stature, just a few more muscles and Tom would be in the same league as Daniel at attracting the attention of the girls. Daniel was his greatest buddy and he didn’t hesitate to share his decent allowance with Tom, but they still both liked a challenge. “Plan A”, Daniel said. “’I’ll go through and we’ll meet at the fence behind the souvenir shop, so that I can give you the Pass. Go to the next entry point. It’s so busy at this time of day; they won’t be too concerned if the thumb print checker doesn’t work. You can blame it on gripping too tightly on the transit bus ride. Say your friends are behind you, and wave. Someone will wave back, they always do”. As he passed through the turnstile, Tom slipped the Annual Pass into his back pocket. No need to show that any more, everything was free and he would give it

The drive chain rattled as the car topped the ride and they looked at what seemed a vertical drop into the void below. The acceleration still caught Tom by surprise and he grasped at the rail in front. The car looped with tremendous forces and they spiralled into the blackness of the tunnel The blackness was still all around. He could sense movement and there was some noise but not a recognisable sound, he could feel nothing. He was scared. The sounds gradually formed into words; someone was talking. “Daniel, Daniel can you hear me. Don’t be too frightened you are OK. You won’t be able to feel anything for a while but your senses will gradually recover. You were the lucky one, being thrown from the car and landing clear. Nothing is broken although you are a bit bruised. You face took a bit of a bashing as you hit the water and it is a bit puffy. Luckily, we found the Theme Park Annual Pass in your back pocket and we’ve called your parents. They’re on their way.”

Welcome to July’s issue. With summer season now in full swing no better time to talk to you about Mindfulness! We live in a very fast-moving world; our days can be completely absorbed in our “to do” lists and it can be too easy to forget about the most important part of our day “ourselves”. Many of my clients already know how passionate I am about teaching them how to live in the present. I for one find it completely necessary to my busy life, it teaches me how to balance myself and most importantly not get stressed. Automatically some people will say “I don’t have time”. It is essential to “make” the time, even if it means getting up half an hour earlier to find it.

What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is living in the present moment. You don’t need to be sitting in the lotus position with your eyes closed in full meditation, it is simple, it is clearing your mind and noticing the present. Stop thinking about what’s for tea at 5pm when it is 11.30am, or how busy you are going to be that day, exhausting your mind before the day has even begun, instead, while out walking, notice the beautiful surroundings around you. At the beach, really feeling the sand under your feet or the water in the sea.

While exercising, really feeling that buzz. Take in the surroundings, the chair you sit on, the sky, the flowers. While prepping meals, really concentrate on the food you are about to eat (it mindfully makes it taste better.) Concentrating on the present moment clears the stress from your mind and helps you to breath more deeply. During my NLP & Life Coaching studies I done A LOT of mindful work on myself, read an insane number of books enjoying the journey along the way and the destination at the end. Two of my most favourite books on mindfulness would have to be: Ruby Wax - Mindfulness for the frazzled (her crazy wit brought tears of laughter to me) & then my constant peer... Mel Robbins – The 5 second Rule (this 1 makes your brain stop procrastinating and more in control of you). Both very different women, yet very good at explaining and simplifying how to practice it in our everyday lives. I also recently joined a Tai Chi class, what an amazing experience for people who struggle with stress in their lives.

MIRROR CORNER Why retirement can put stress

Dear readers, This corner will be devoted to give you some help and emotional support. Using a well known psychological tool called “projection” I will hope to achieve this. Others expressing their feelings and situations seems to be one of the best ways to have a truly good look “inside” ourselves. To do this mechanism of empathy and projection (basic human emotional defence) we can create, recreate, build and rebuild different points of view about different situations. We grow on this basis. My proposal is for you to bring me different, real situations that can have an impact on our everyday lives, and that may also be an interesting topic to others. I encourage you to take an active part and bring me situations, ask me questions or some possible suggestions, even a consultation if required. This way we are all co-operating together in “mirror corners” to make it work for our own benefits and interests.

A bit of History: Before their retirement Ryan and Meg had lead very busy lives in the UK both working full time and raising children. The idea of retirement in Spain arose almost 20 years ago. It allows us to expand our minds and to learn not only about new things, but also about ourselves. 2) Lack of identification: If you are used to working, rushing about all day and earning a wage then it’s really important to find activities that define who we are and make us recognize ourselves in the “mirror”. It’s a good idea to find common as well as individual activities. The aim is not to earn money; the aim is the activity in itself… at least three times a week a few hours a day, or as you schedule. Perhaps you love reading, writing or swimming and you couldn´t find time to do in the past? Ask yourself what makes you feel excited? And make it a “must”! It is more than important to feel productive. 3) After forty years, is it possible to say ¨I don´t know my partner” ? Yes, it is! … Why? Because we often do things just for the sake of this or that to satisfy our boss, our children or our partner - but is that freedom? When you or your partner have time, perhaps he or she wants to be alone, or wants to do things his or her way, which may not be met with your approval or fulfil your expectations. This can cause sparks and frustrations! The problem is not the “lack of love”; the problem is the “change of situation” which requires more communication. Express what you feel and make the other see your point of view because now you are not doing things for the “sake of it”, now you are doing things because you “want to”. Time for a “kit kat”! Big institutions have their meetings and agendas, so why don’t you? Try to

Hake in Basque sauce

Hi everybody What a start to the summer!! Raining, windy ... it’s not like summer at all but hopefully the good weather will be here soon. This month we are going north and this time to the Basque country to make one of their famous fish dishes Hake in Basque sauce!

Ingredients • • • •

Let’s Start!

360gr hake fish 12 clams 120ml fish broth glass of white wine (chacoli is their wine but use the one you like) 60gr green peas 60gr white asparagus parsley 2 garlic gloves flour 2 boiled eggs salt and pepper to taste

1. Season hake with salt and pepper and dip each side in flour 2. Seal the fish in a hot pan with olive oil. Fry about 2 minutes each side. 3. Add chopped garlic and pour wine to the pan. Let the wine simmer to lose the alcohol and add the fish broth into the pan. 4. Add boiled and open clams to the hake, simmer to let the sauce reduce and add the rest of the ingredients ( boiled eggs, green peas, asparagus) Season with salt and pepper and let it cook for 10 minutes. When ready to serve add freshly chopped fresh parsley. Hope you enjoy !! Bye till next month x

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Las Hogueras de San Juan - the Bonfires of Saint John Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. June in Alicante is always a busy time especially when it gets closer to the end of the month as everyone starts to prepare for the biggest festival of the year. Las Hogueras de San Juan the Bonfires of Saint John. This event started back in 1928 so this will be the 90th year that it has been celebrated. All over the city 88 elaborate and beautifully designed paper maché and wood statues are set up, each with its own 24 hour security guard, and the locals and tourists alike enjoy walking around and admiring these detailed

works of art. There is even a museum in Alicante that displays miniatures of the winning hogueras from each year. In the few days before the night of San Juan which this year was on the 24th June, there are many traditional parades throughout the city and on the stroke of mid-night a large cannon sounds and the burning of these structures begins. The atmosphere is truly electric and whilst the bonfires are burning the crowds often chant “Agua Agua” encouraging the firemen to turn the hoses in their direction for a refreshing blast of cold, to relieve them from the heat of the flames. Also all along the beaches, for one night only, small fires are permitted and large groups of people join friends and family to celebrate this festive occasion and take part in rituals, such as jumping over the fire, throwing a wish written on a piece of paper into the fire and jumping backwards over the waves in the sea. You will also see some amazing fireworks on the Night of San Juan and over the following 5 nights there is a firework competition and the displays are truly amazing and lucky for us, you can see them from Gran Alacant. This festival is really fun and we have enjoyed celebrating it in different ways over the years with friends and we all recommend it. My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. This month we would like to take you to La Bateria de las Cenizas in Cartagena. It is a

beautiful and interesting picnic place for the whole family and shade can be found along the way and on top. Directions: Continue the road RM-314 from La Manga golf forward. From the road RM314, turn to the road RM-F42 (following the sign El llano del Beal). Right after the intersection on the left is a parking lot (dirt field) where you can park your car.

La Batería de las Cenizas in Cartagena is a very popular picnic place during weekends. If you follow people from the parking lot you cannot get lost. Even if there’s no one near, just follow the road uphill from the signpost next to the road RM-314. The road up the hill is wide and easy to walk. In many areas pines give a nice shadow while walking. There are no services, so carry enough water and snacks for you.

FOUR LEGGED HEROES Héroes de 4 Patas (Four Legged Heroes) is a non-profit association which wants to provide a decent retirement to working dogs which are no longer on duty, maybe due to age, or maybe because they have to stop working due to an ability loss. The association has created a fostering families network. Héroes de 4 Patas also wants to show handlers and K-9 units dogs daily tasks, such as earthquakes or other natural disasters survivors detection, and drugs or explosives detection. These dogs protect us during their professional career since they help other heroes such as firemen and Emergency Management workers, so they deserve a decent and happy retirement. Most working dogs are German Sheperds and Belgian Malinois Dogs. Both males and females are used. These dogs are trained by Spanish Law Enforcement Agencies for different purposes, and they may live at their facilities or maybe at handler’s home. When the dog gets retired, it may continue living with its handler, but if this is impossible, the dog is adopted by a family. Retired working dogs are not always old dogs. Sometimes they stop working because the handler is been relocated, or maybe because they have a characteristic (such as hypersensitivity to sound) which makes them impossible to continue working; some other ones have never worked just because they didn’t pass successfully the training. So we can find available dogs from 2 years old. Working dogs are trained as a game, that is, the prize when they do what they are asked for, is to play with the handler. So, despite they are professional, well trained

and obedient dogs, they need to play like any other dog, and they deserve a rest and our gratitude for their task. Some of them have saved human lives, not only in Spain, but also in internatonal rescue operations (remember, for example, Haiti earthquake) joining their handlers, because every handler has a dog, and every working dog has a handler. The organization has a website which includes a list of available dogs with their pictures and stories. If we want to adopt one of these four legged heroes, we can fill in and send a form from the organization website. We know adopting, raising and educating a puppy is an exciting experience, but giving a second life to any of these retired heroes may be even more exciting. GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY Well, here we are in the middle of June with warm sunshine on our backs at last. In the last couple of weeks of May and the beginning of June there were at lot of maintenance works undertaken on the course at El Plantio. These interrupted the golf in some small way as each of the nine holes were closed one after the other whilst the work was undertaken. That said, it has all been worthwhile as the course is looking fabulous and playing well. The work was designed to coincide with the onset of the low season during the summer months when the heat deters many from playing during the day when the sun is at its most intense. There is benefit therefore in playing with our Society for 2 reasons. Firstly our tee times are such that we avoid the midday sun whilst, secondly but perhaps more importantly for many, the course owners have reduced to us the cost per round to 35 euros per person to include a buggy. This is a tremendous saving. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018). On Tuesday 12thJune our second away game resulted in a 2-1 defeat at San Fulgencio. It was a very hot day and we took a good turnout of 12 players for the 8 a side game. We thank Doug for organising this fixture and he was kept busy changing players on and off the pitch, with some lads wilting in the hot sun. We were well looked after at the local bar after the game, and a second fixture will take place nearer the autumn. Our sponsored shirts looked good at both games, thanks to Gran Alacant Properties, GA Homefinders, Gran Alacant Advertiser magazine, Hispania, and La Paletta Restaurant. We cannot play home games on Gran Alacant as we have no astro turf pitches. There are 11 in Santa Pola so will have to use one of them for home fixtures. In our normal Thursday session, two days after this game, we had to cancel as it was a very very hot afternoon. Not good for

old guys running around. We play every Thursday afternoon at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre. For the next couple of months we will be able to use the inside pitch as nobody else has booked it. We can then continue playing, out of the summer sun. Our ages range in the 60s and 70s with a few in their 50s. There is no running, no tackling and no physical contact. Come and join us. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

GREEN WOODPECKER they look around. In flight, they have a fast bounding flight showing a bright yellow rump.

Even if you're not very familiar with different bird species, you might possibly guess that the bird in my picture this month is a Green Woodpecker, and you'd be right. No, wait a minute – you'd be wrong. You'd have been right if you'd said that more than about 7 years ago, but the powers that be (The International Ornithologists Committee) have decided that the bird pictured is now to be called the Iberian Woodpecker, because although it looks, sounds and lives in almost exactly the same way as the Green Woodpecker, there are enough differences to reclassify it as a separate species. The IOC are very keen on doing this, and the hard-core twitchers are delighted with it too, as it gives them another tick in their notebook. So can you see one in the Clot? Yes you can, but you have to look very hard and you won't get a close view of it unless you're very lucky – they are extremely shy birds and won't allow a close approach. You can listen out for their very distinctive call which is a loud series of about 10 'klew' sounds which gets slightly faster towards the end and falls slightly in pitch, usually delivered from high up in a tree. Also look out for their distinctive upright stance when perched on a distant dead tree, they often hang from the main trunk and remain fairly still while

The Iberian Woodpecker differs from the Green Woodpecker you might have seen in the UK by having grey cheeks whereas the British bird has extensive areas of black in that area. Otherwise, the two species are very similar, but the Iberian version is confined to the Spanish peninsula and some areas of Southern France where the normal Green Woodpecker doesn't occur. They are sedentary birds being found all year round in our area, not just in the Clot but even in urbanisations where there are plenty of trees – a pair was roaming around lower Monte y Mar earlier this year. As is well known, Woodpeckers drill holes in trees for their nests which may be used year after year, raising three or four chicks in one brood each year. Their main food source is ants and their larvae, so they spend a lot of time on the ground around ant hills where they scoop up the insects using their long (10 cm) tongues which have a sticky secretion. Those of you old enough to remember the TV show Bagpuss will recall Professor Yaffle, the wooden bookend character loosely based on the Green Woodpecker – this name came from the old English name Yaffle, which is an attempt to mimic its distinctive call. The Spanish name is Pito Real, which means royal whistler (but don't go looking for other translations...)
