Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was in the Sureste advert.
JUST A NOTE: We do provide all of our advertisers with FREE design work and therefore ask that this work not be supplied and used by other publications.
Hello and welcome to our July issue. It certainly seems that summer has arrived at last. Beaches are getting very busy and the Beach Bars now up and running, it is definately a different scene down near the Little Church on the coast road this year, and with the fencing off of alot of the parking areas along that road there is bound to be chaos this summer. It’s lovely to see a train back on Gran Alacant and great that Paco is once more one of the drivers, he is always a cheerful and friendly man and it is a fun way to get around. The tree’s that have been planted all along Av.Noruega and Av Mediterraneo are now coming into bloom and really do begin look good and with a lovely fountain to be built on the roundabout at the bottom of the Maxcoop hill, Gran Alacant really does improve year on year. Have a good month. Sandra and Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005.
RARE WHITE TIGER SEEN IN THE CLOT Concern was raised in early June, when a rare white tiger was spotted laying in the sun, in the popular El Clot on the edge of Gran Alacant. We did poke it with a stick, but it did not move!!!! It really does make you despair when you see the way in which people dispose of their rubbish!!!!!
This summer could see many problems with parking around our coast with so many of the areas being fenced off.
Our wonderful beaches and sea around our coastline, have been awarded numerous
blue flags and tourism flags for this summer. The only beaches that did not get the blue flags were the beaches where the Council has built the nice areas with trees and seating. Believe it or not, this stopped the full blue flag award!!!!!!!
There are several different beach bars appearing now for the summer season. (see pictures opposite). These bars will be accessible at night by a tourist train from Santa Pola. The train will run along our lovely coast road and arrive on Gran Alacant at the Yellow Submarine at the Carabasi Complex. Initially from June 12th it will run weekends only until going every night from July 16th until 30th August. It leaves Santa Pola at midnight, 1-30am, 3am and leaves Gran Alacant Yellow Submarine at 12-45am, 2-15am and 3-45am. If there is demand, it is hoped that it will run during the day, for a scenic trip along our lovely coast and giving access to beach drop offs. It will all be about demand. If it始s used it
At an earlier meeting with Loreto we mentioned that we had had enquiries as to whether the bus company could run a service to the local fiestas.
NIGHT SERVICE for the HONGURAS FESTIVALS
This the company has done and here is the bus service that will run on the 23rd and 24th July, into Santa Pola.
SANTA POLA TO ALICANTE
ALICANTE TO SANTA POLA
Please use it to encourage the bus company to do the same again in the future. will run!!
Renovation of the roundabout down by the school and at the bottom of the Maxcoop hill has begun. The plans looks brilliant, with a walled area, a waterfall, fountains, and gardens.
We mentioned to Loreto that we have been told that undesirables have been stealing the clothes from the bins that are sent to help the under privileged. She will have a word with the people concerned who look after the clothing bins.
THESE TWO ARE BY THE LITTLE WHITE CHURCH
The sweets and drinks kiosk that was on the Council Office car park has been moved to provide a service at our new park.
Our dog fouling petition which you can sign at O始Duills Bar is now in its last

month. We talked again to Loreto about employing a dog warden. This became more apparent this week when a female jogger was attacked by a dog (not on a lead), where hopefully a warden could keep an eye on this continuing problem as well. The fines for all these incidents would pay for the warden.
We have pictures and a timetable above, and route for the new Gran Alacant orbital train. The service started on Sunday 20th June and what a lovely train it is. We have not been sent any publicity about the train so have scanned a leaflet showing the stop points and times for you.
It takes one hour to do the circuit. The bus does a similar route and takes 1/2 hour, so you never have to wait too long for the next mode of transport.
One of the emails with picture sent to us showing the continued parking problems at the school is being sent to the Town Hall.
Another email to us about the pathway between the Life Resort and El Faro is in hand. When the Life Resort building work next to the path has been completed, the pathway will be reinstated. There will be a trade fair on the Gran Alacant Commercial Centre car park on the 2nd and 3rd of July, starting 8-30pm on the 2nd.
Just a footnote about the track walkway through to Santa Pola, there has to be a road way that would allow any emergency service to access the area, be it Ambulance, Firebrigade or Police, this is not a roadway for public cars.
DEBBIES TREE Remember our article about the fundraising for Debbie Milligan? The amount raised was 865 euros. We saved the fund a great deal of money by digging the very large hole needed in what was mostly bare rock, ourselves. The cost which includes the planting, transportation, hire of crane, manpower and registration of the tree in Madrid and 3 Metros tree (which turned out to be 4 Metros) totalled 625 euros. The balance is 240 euros .....Murphy is buying a piece of marble which is to be engraved (free of charge) by a local business..... to Trident (a member on the forum here) who is caring for the tree that any balance could be used to buy some plants gravel etc. to place around the tree. Again I would like to thank all the local businesses and people for your support in this project If you can find the time locate the tree and view the sunset from this wonderful spot .....and spare a moment for Debbie and her family.
Thanks for the pictures and all of the hard work, mostly go to Ian Robertson from the forum and Murphy from Sol Builders for all of their hard work involved in this project.
On one of the local forums, presented this series of pictures to show
THE WALKWAY/ CYCLEWAY, BETWEEN GRAN ALACANT AND SANTA POLA. which we mentioned in our previous issue. We asked whether the photographer Keith Croston would allow us to publish them in our magazine, to show readers of this lovely walk. Thanks to him these pictures show to us all, the efforts by Santa Pola Town Hall to clear up these areas. You can start the walk from the walkway just off the bad bend on the road between the GA Centre and the Gran Alacant Post Office. You come out at Santa Pola at the roundabout shown. It is the one next “but one to the Eroski roundabout as you go towards del Este. Please read Keiths coments in an email to us on our email page. Any comments to us??

Apple announced today that it has developed a breast implant that can store and play music. It will cost from $499 to $699, depending on cup and speaker size. This is considered a major social breakthrough, because women are always complaining about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them.
Two Men, Gran Alacant and a Rover 400 (part two)
OK 9am on the day of departure from Gran Alacant and my wife and little girl came out to wave us off......bags soon covered the evidence of sand deposits in the boot which seemed to give us a little more confidence (no idea why really)......but the newly found confidence was soon shattered by my Spanish friend from across the road who had come out to see what was all the commotion was about .......I explained to him in my much improved Spanish that we were driving to England in my ROVER 400 he looked at the car, then me and shook my hand laughed and then proceeded to run his finger across his throat "he with little confidence " I thought to myself.............this did not worry me . What I saw next worried me......Mike my newly found co. driver was stood at the top of his steps with the biggest piece of fricken hand luggage I have ever seen .....I looked at Mike and then the car and found the need for a toilet (fast) Mike asked my wife was I worried she said "no it始s an age thing".....she was lying .......yep i was worried. The street soon filled with people waving us off .....and at 9.10 am we started the car .....and blow me she started up first time (and that was first) at this point I knew we had reached the point of no return we were on our way
Although we had known Mike for a while the thought of traveling such a long distance with a relative stranger did worry me a little .....we need not have worried Mike turned out to be a lovely man ....as we got to Max Coop supermarket he turned round and asked or the children "are we there yet?"........we were still laughing when as we reached the roundabout by the N332. A Spanish driver nearly took us out with the world famous Spanish roundabout trick we all know so well (enter the roundabout without indicating ..change lanes on the roundabout ..overtake on the roundabout and then exit without indicating)...having driven in Spain for some years now I used the classic defensive move of closing my eyes and hoping for the best (always works). I drove for the first hundred miles taking us past Alicante and Benidorm ....I think Alicante is a lovely city but the outskirts looks poor and shabby viewing it at speed is the best option. Benidorm looks tidy for a holiday resort with rolling green hills behind it....we stopped shortly after for a pants check, the thought of that roundabout manouver still fresh in our minds if not our trousers. Changing drivers Mike took to the wheel noticing the many dead insects that had already hurled themselves at our windscreen, he reached for the windscreen washer ...I shouted "don始t press that it doesn始t work", alas it was too late, yes water did hit the windscreen but the Rover 400 is well known for the in-ability of its windscreen wipers to come into contact fully with the windscreen ....what a mess!!!..It had soon become apparent that Mike had much to learn about the Rover 400. Mike I know was struggling to come to terms with the gulf between the Rover and the usual car of his choice .....he often mentioned how handy it would be to have cruise control on such a long trip ......these things are sent to try us my suggestion of placing a brick on the gas pedal as a form of cruise control got a blank look at first (he knew I was joking) I think? I thought it was time to break the news to him that at 65000 miles I was worried about the cambelt situation ....he replied "what about the cambelt".....I did not reply for a while as we were approaching Valencia and I felt as the driver Mike needed no further worries.....but the Rover 400 had a secret ...a secret that would have every Spanish driver quaking in his boots .....the dummy break pedal! more next month

The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets."
-- Phil and his mate Bob are out just fishing quietly and drinking beer. Almost silently, so as not to scare the fish, Bob says, 'I think I'm gonna divorce my wife', she hasn't spoken to me in over 2 months.' Phil continues slowly sipping his beer then thoughtfully says, 'You better think it over, Bob - Women like that are hard to find.'

A lady that was putting her waste into a green basura heard a little noise from inside, she removed a plastic bag that was tied and sealed. These two kittens were inside the bag. She took the kittens and called us. They are just 5 weeks old and after a couple of days in the vet clinic they were declared in good health. They are now available for adoption. This dog is the property of a Spanish man who has a small holding, he keeps a few dogs there. A lady volunteer goes there to care for the dogs and when the man decides he doesn't want one of them anymore she must find a home for the dog before he tries to kill it. Foffi is a discarded 6 yr old sheepdog, he is very friendly. We urgently need someone to either adopt him or foster him
K9 Club fosterer Anita found this dog on a main road in an urbanisation near to a supermarket. She put a lead on her and the dog led Anita to her litter of seven puppies. All the puppies except one have now gone to new homes. We have named the mother Luna. She is a Collie cross. Someone has previously cut most of her ears off but she is nevertheless good natured and adorable. Luna is now ready for a new home This German shepherd was seen in the fields near to Guardamar, an English man cared for him and fed him over a two week period. The man was then due to go back to the UK and he was very concerned about the dog. He contacted us and we agreed to take him and care for him until we find him a new home. He is a typical German Shepherd with a gentle temperament and very obedient. He is 18 months old and we have named him Rex. If you like German Shepherds you will not be disappointed.

HOLY HUMOUR The parish priest was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the parish priest paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need £4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge £100 or more, please stand up! At that moment, the substitute organist played "The National Anthem" And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

Hi everyone, this month and next I would like to talk about THE USE OF AN OTOSCOPE AND THERMO AURCULAR THERAPY (EAR CANDLING) Regular readers will be aware that I have been a Thermo Auricular Therapist for quite some time now. In March this year I completed a course on the use of the Otoscope, a device for looking into the external auditory canal to assess the health of the canal and the eardrum. This enables me to better understand what is happening within the ear, see if there is any build up of wax. Then plan the treatment accordingly. THERMO AURICULAR THERAPY OR EAR CANDLING This ancient and natural therapy has been handed down to us through the mists of time by many civilizations. We are told that many ancient cultures including the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and early Aborigines used ear candles HOPI means “peaceful ones’ or people of peace. The Hopi’s were the first settled pueblo Indians of the north American Continent. For many centuries they lived in harmony with nature, using Fire, herbs, smoke & heat adhering to original universal laws passed down to them by the great creator Massuu. Their responsible treatment of Mother Earth, their cultural standards, universal spirituality and pronounced knowledge of healing still underline the prominent status of these people. The Hopi people are rapidly gaining respect for this extensive knowledge and great spirituality. Hopi is the “brand name’ given to the candles by the manufacturer BIOSUN. It was a notion that the practice of ear candle treatment reached the rest of the world from the Native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona a fact that is neither acknowledged nor endorsed by them. BIOSUN candles are made from the highest quality ingredients and are regularly tested in an independent laboratory in Germany. They have been shown to be free of all chemical pesticides & fungicidal residues; they have obtained the prestigious CE mark (93/42 EECClass lla) for medical devices in Europe. No other candles in the world have this extraordinary level of certification. It is important that when you are having treatments for ears that the practitioner is qualified as some candles are not safe to use. Thermo Auricular Therapy is the treatment as names, copyrighted & registered by Susan Maunsell & Linda Stokes Next month I will tell you what Candles are used for. Take care until then.................Dott

WISDOM BY THE LOCALS FOR THE LOCALS
On a local level, residents of, and visitors to, the Gran Alacant area are already benefiting greatly from a newly founded local site - www.granalacantforum.es here local and national information is posted by local people for local people. The Forum's simple aim is: "To provide a friendly internet meeting place for residents of, and visitors to, Gran Alacant, in order to enrich our lives with words that inform, educate and entertain." Its motto is 'Rhetoric with Respect'. As you would expect, you and your opinions will be treated with respect. No one need be hesitant in writing something for members to read. Simply show respect and receive respect. Of course you don't need to write anything, maybe you'd prefer to be a reader and use
as you would a daily newspaper. It is great for that too.
Universal Declaration of Animal Rights Preamble: Considering that Life is one, all living beings having a common origin and having diversified in the course of the evolution of the species, Considering that all living beings possess natural rights, and that any animal with a nervous system has specific rights, Considering that the contempt for, and even the simple ignorance of, these natural rights, cause serious damage to Nature and lead men to commit crimes against animals, Considering that the coexistence of species implies a recognition by the human species of the right of other animal species to live, Considering that the respect of animals by humans is inseparable from the respect of men for each other, It is hereby proclaimed that: Article 1 All animals have equal rights to exist within the context of biological equilibrium. This equality of rights does not overshadow the diversity of species and of individuals. Article 2 All animal life has the right to be respected. Article 3 1°- Animals must not be subjected to bad treatments or to cruel acts. 2°- If it is necessary to kill an animal, it must be instantaneous, painless and cause no apprehension. 3°- A dead animal must be treated with decency. Article 4 1°- Wild animals have the right to live and to reproduce in freedom in their own natural environment. 2°- The prolonged deprivation of the freedom of wild animals, hunting and fishing practised as a pastime, as well as any use of wild animals for reasons that are not vital, are contrary to this fundamental right. Article 5 1°- Any animal which is dependent on man has
the right to proper sustenance and care. 2°- It must under no circumstances be abandoned or killed unjustifiably. 3°- All forms of breeding and uses of the animal must respect the physiology and behaviour specific to the species. 4°- Exhibitions, shows and films involving animals must also respect their dignity and must not include any violence whatsoever. Article 6 1°- Experiments on animals entailing physical or psychological suffering violate the rights of animals. 2°-Replacement methods must be developed and systematically implemented. Article 7 Any act unnecessary involving the death of an animal, and any decision leading to such an act, constitute a crime against life. Article 8 1°- Any act compromising the survival of a wild species and any decision leading to such an act are tantamount to genocide, that is to say, a crime against the species. 2°- The massacre of wild animals, and the pollution and destruction of biotopes are acts of genocide. Article 9 1°- The specific legal status of animals and their rights must be recognised by law. 2°- The protection and safety of animals must be represented at the level of Governmental organizations. Article 10 Educational and schooling authorities must ensure that citizens learn from childhood to observe, understand and respect animals. The Universal Declaration of Animal Rights was solemnly proclaimed in Paris on 15 October 1978 at the UNESCO headquarters. The text, revised by the International League of Animal Rights in 1989, was submitted to the UNESCO Director General in 1990 and made public that same year.
Universal Declaration of Animal Rights is, maybe, a bit vague, so, every country or zone has its own animal protection laws. The valid one here is Ley 4/1994 de 8 de Julio, from Generalitat Valenciana, which is fully available online. We would just like to remark some of its articles, the ones related to companion animals: -4th article. It is forbidden: d) keeping animals in improper facilities. e) mutilating them, except those mutilations controlled by a Vet (nowadays, aesthetical ear cropping is forbidden, so, ear cropped puppies cannot be sold now). d) donating animals as a price, reward, offer, etc. e) selling them by traveling sale (flea markets!!) -5th article. 1) the owner is obliged to keep the animal in good sanitary condition.
-13th article. 3) the fact that a pet shop might have its own Veterinary service for expending health certificates for the pets for sale, DOESN’T EXEMPT the dealer of his responsibility about non-detected incubating diseases when the animal is sold. So, there is a 15 days period of warranty, so, in case of hidden problems of diseases detected during this period the animal may be refused. When purchasing a new animal, we always recommend to have it checked by an impartial Vet during this 15 days period (the sooner, the better). Nobody can oblige you to see a certain Vet (this is a free country!), and the 15 days “quarantine” period is not an special offer the dealer gives you, but a mandatory period that must be respected by law. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
Some things in life are so obvious that you wonder why anyone would bother to tell you about them; for example, there was a recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by one Barbara J. Rolls who revealed (gasp!) that big portions of food might contribute to obesity. Gosh, you don’t say! So when I first arrived in Gran Alacant a few years ago, and a floppy large bright butterfly landed on my wall, I didn’t need to rush to my book “Las Mariposas para Tontos” (Butterflies for Dummies) to look up what it was, even though I knew I’d never actually seen one in real life before. There is something about the Swallowtail butterfly that makes it so very obvious what it is. It’s probably a hangover from your childhood, where in your very first reading book, B for Butterfly was always illustrated with a picture of one. You then had the traumatic experience of realising that the butterflies you actually saw outside bore little or no resemblance to the one in your book – they were usually the boring Cabbage White butterflies whose caterpillars were chewing their way through your dad’s allotment – and you wondered if the picture wasn’t some mad figment of the illustrator’s imagination. But, come out to Spain and here they are. From April to October, these gorgeous insects delight us with their presence, not just down in the Clot but all round the urbanisations where they sip the nectar from garden plants. They breed in damp areas – that’s where the Clot comes in – and the
caterpillars, which are large green bugs with black stripes, have an unusual defence mechanism of releasing a scent which smells somewhat like rotten pineapple. Which is fine if your predator has a pineapple allergy, but I think spiky hairs would have done the job better. This is the Common Swallowtail, there is another species in our area with the inappropriate name of Scarce Swallowtail; it is actually more common in southern Spain that the common one if you see what I mean! It has the same overall shape but is lighter coloured and marked with a deeper black edging. The picture of the Swallowtail (the Spanish name is Macaón) is courtesy of my good friend John Oliver, who found this one a few days after I left Gran Alacant in May to go back to work – perhaps I should have stayed a few days longer! I could have looked for one back in the UK, but they are rare and confined to a limited range in East Anglia, but since they’re so easy to see out here I think I’ll wait until I get back out again. See you next month.
Hi Barry and Sandra
Genuine emails to our magazine
It´s a while since I contacted you about the above and I know how you have asked questions of Loretto (read about them in the GA Advertiser ). We are wondering if there has been any more news since the April issue of a promise to do the work "later in the year". We have all tried to be patient (not many of us here though) and it continues to be a problem. I have attached a few photos (taken this week) to show what we have to put up with two or three times a day, without mentioning the noise. As you can see, entrances are blocked and even double parking on the street. The police are at the end off the street and don´t venture off the "school road". When we complained once they just said that if you don´t like it then close the road off. The parents are a bigger problem than the children, rude, arrogant and ignorant when approached about the parking (which is why we have left well alone relying on the actions? of the Council. I know you haven´t much influence with the council but appreciate what you do. If you could bring it up again at your next meeting with Loretto and get some time line it would be great. On a lighter note, we were only commenting the other day on how your magazine has improved and flourished. Very professional and informative. Congratulations on all your efforts. Many thanks Brian Peers Hello Barry,
Many thanks for sending me a draft copy of the GA Advertiser pages about the track. (see pages 8 and 9 of this edition). I have a couple of comments/suggestions to make: I am pleased that you have the assurance of the S.P. Council that it will not be covered with tarmac (yet). The theme of the original forum posting was not to praise the S.P. Council but to complain that a once wild area had been tragically despoiled by having the vegetation stripped back to make an unnecessarily wide track -a hideous white scar across the landscape, hence the before/after pictures. Smoothing out the surface has certainly made it easier for the general public and normal cyclists to use but why make it wide enough for two cars to pass? Enjoyment of the wild character of the area has been much reduced. The walk is far less lovely now that the track has been 'improved'. I have spoken to various people about the track. Most are in favour but some are very much against it (including one S.P. Council employee, "it's like an aircraft runway"). Maybe you could point readers to the original forum posting http://tinyurl.com/2dztznd and invite their opinions.
I am very pleased that you are showing readers that El Clot and the beach are not the only local wild attractions. Kind Regards Keith Hey!
You issue an excellent magazine for us i Gran Alacant. Thank you. Could you, in your contact with the Gran Alacant Counciller, ask if it possible to have the gangway between the St. Pola Life Resort and the Urb. Monte Faro opened so we can walk over the hill to St. Pola without needing to go around all urbanisations in Gran Alacant. Regards Ole H. Handeland (Norwegian)
