FEBRUARY 2024 ISSUE 229

Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: Health Centre Dear Lou, I think this needs a mention, as our health is very important. I heard from friends how unpleasant it was to try to make an appointment at the medical centre. My husband needed to go to check an appointment with the hospital and took a Spanish-speaking friend. One receptionist is particularly rude, if you do not have a translator; she just points to the sign and then directs you to the door! She was the only receptionist working unfortunately and the queue was out the door, as it is most days. It does not help when they take so long to deal with people. Not all visitors to the clinic have Spanishspeaking friends or know translators they can ask to accompany them. I would have thought a public health service should have at least one person to help English-speaking people, as English people make up a large population here in Gran Alacant. We feel the service has declined considerably since we first moved here. If they insist on Spanish being spoken, would it not help to have a list up with names and contact numbers of translators? Alternatively, would it be possible to have a list in your magazine? I am sure our local translators would send you their numbers. I hope that our local Councillor will look into this problem. Jan A: Borja Merino Regarding the issue of the Health Centre, a project is underway for the construction

and creation of a future health centre in Gran Alacant. We are also in contact with Elche Health Department and the Conselleria to discuss ways to improve health care for our residents. We will raise your suggestion about translators for the foreign population. Thank you Jan. Q: Skywalk/Lighthouse Thank you for the Ayuntamiento’s efforts to promote the Santa Pola Lighthouse and Gran Alacant Skywalk, AKA Mirador del Faro, which undoubtedly serve as an invaluable tourist attraction for Gran Alacant. The site is a true gem in our community, drawing visitors with its spectacular views, and it has become a symbol of the area. However, there are significant problems with access and accessibility to the lighthouse. The current options, whether navigating the rough road or walking from El Faro Urbanization, present significant challenges. Moreover, the access from the N-332 poses a safety hazard, with a diminutive sign often leading to confusion and potentially dangerous situations, especially for drivers unfamiliar with the area. Additionally, there is a lack of public toilets to accommodate the increasing number of visitors, and the iconic site remains largely inaccessible to individuals with disabilities or limited mobility. Given the increasing popularity of the Santa Pola lighthouse and skywalk, it is important to address some of these issues. Are there any plans or initiatives to improve the accessibility to this beloved site? Measures

LARGE ITEMS COLLECTIONS

Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY. Please Whatsapp only this number any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on. This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy. such as a properly constructed road, enhanced parking facilities, and clearer signage as well as public toilets and disabled access, would greatly enhance the overall experience for both residents and tourists. These improvements would undoubtedly contribute to the positive image of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant as welcoming and well-maintained destinations. Laura A: Borja Merino Different projects are underway for the improvement and beautification of the Cape and Monte de Santa Pola. There are aspects that do not depend on the City Council, but on the National Government, such as the improvements in the accesses of the N-332 highway or the Santa Pola mountain range. For all these reasons, we will continue requesting improvements from the corresponding authorities. Q: Pedestrian Crossings I offer you a proposal to improve the visibility of the pedestrian crossings in Gran Alacant. This, already found in other locations, would be to use the sunlight that we have had for so long in this area to illuminate the pedestrian crossing signal and also add light signals on the ground that are connected to the signal’s solar panel. I think it would be a good way to use the energy sources that we have available and could give better luminosity to the pedestrian crossing and avoid incidents between pedestrians and vehicles. Thank you, David

A: Borja Merino In recent weeks, solar-powered light signals have been installed at the pedestrian crossings at the entrance to Gran Alacant and Avenida Escandinavia. We will continue installing them in the areas needed most. Q: Signal GSM About a year ago, I informed you about the very poor mobile signal around Gran Alacant particularly in Avenida Carabassi, Polonia and Noruega. My question is, is anything being done to improve the situation? Are there any plans for the installation of a new antenna? Regards, Thomas A: Borja Merino Work is currently underway on the installation of a new GSM telephone antenna for the lower area of Gran Alacant, so that it can provide better coverage for the areas you mentioned. We hope this will resolve this issue. Q: Dog Mess I hate to have to write again about Dog Mess in Gran Alacant. While walking around the area this month, trying to keep up to my 10,000 steps per day, I have been appalled at the amount of dog mess lying on the pavements. We have a rule about dog walkers having to carry both poo bags and water sprays when they walk their dogs. I see very few

people carrying poo bags and even fewer carrying water bottles. Who is responsible for enforcing this and what can be done to make dog owners responsible for clearing up their animals’ mess? As we try and get people to use their cars less, it seems only reasonable that the pavements are kept clean and safe for people to walk on without spending their whole time dodging dog mess. I look forward to reading our Councillor’s reply. Kind regards, Peter - Nova Beach Hi, I have been living in Gran Alacant now for 10 months and I am really enjoying my time here. I have one complaint however, the amount of dog dirt around the area. In particular around Aldi, Gabe Market, and the Clot de Galvany walkways. I see some signs up about possible fines, but I am wondering if these are enforced. It can be very tricky going for a walk when it is getting dark without walking in dog dirt. Owen A: Borja Merino The Cleaning Service has been reinforced as well as Police Surveillance to ensure that people who have dogs collect excrement. However, we ask all residents to respect and comply with the rules, since having a clean and well-kept neighbourhood depends on everyone.

NEW SCHOOL

The City Council has put out to tender the project to build the roads next to the Montefaro urbanization. Once the works have been awarded, the company will have four months to carry them out. The first phase is to install lighting, drainage and a retaining wall to separate the new school from the adjoining houses. This first phase is expected to cost 1.1 million euros. The building of the new school valued at 12.5 million, will be built in parallel to the installation of roads and all the services in the surroundings. The main works will consist of installing drinking

water, sewage and rainwater networks. The area will be equipped with lighting and telecommunications before paving, asphalting and laying sidewalks on the streets.

POLICE STATION

The school will have a total capacity of around 700 students, which will alleviate the issue of overcrowding in the Vicenta Ruso School in Avd. Noruega. Bidding for this project began in December 2017; some years later in mid-2023 work finally began.

NEW CLEANING CONTRACT WITH URBASER

The works of the Gran Alacant Police Station are being finalised with landscaping of the surrounding area. The intention is to keep the hedges at a low height so that the police checkpoint can be seen from all angles.

NEW SOCIAL SERVICES FOR GA

Mayoress Loreto Serrano and Urbaser SU Delegate for Alicante and Murcia, Alberto Bleda, have signed the new cleaning contract by which the company assumes the provision of the service for the next 10 years. Urbaser now has a period of 6 months to acquire all the machinery necessary to carry out its work. Mayoress Serrano stated “As stipulated in the specifications, we are talking about the renovation and expansion of all the containers in the municipality, the improvement of the cleaning system, new waste collection trucks, steam machines for street cleaning, a new system for cleaning the beaches that will allow the removal of algae without sand and thus avoid the sieving process. In the coming months our residents will gradually see a substantial change in the improvement of this service. The new contract will be adapted to the current population and the needs of Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.”

Councillor of Social Services Gela Roche, Councillor of Gran Alacant Óscar Valenzuela, and Councillor Encarni Ramírez, visited the technicians of the Social Services department. With its opening, the City Council of Santa Pola aims to bring social services to the residents of Gran Alacant in the facilities located in the Santara Wellness Resort on Calle Monte de Santa Pola.

DAMAGE TO LANDSCAPING

The landscaping recently planted at the entrance road to Gran Alacant is already suffering from damage by the attitude of some pedestrians who cross through prohibited areas. This is also a road safety issue with Santa Pola Town Hall asking residents to use the existing pedestrian crossing.

Urbaser has been quick to resolve the issue with replacement bins. Thank you for your co-operation.

The Santa Pola Town Hall is carrying out a progressive beautification plan of the entrance to Gran Alacant after repeated requested by the neighbours. Landscaping works have been carried out on the traffic islands between the two entrance lanes and two exit lanes leading on and off from the main N332.

PROCESSIONARY CONTROL

Along this entire strip native species such as creeping rosemary have been planted, as well as the drip irrigation system for maintenance. This is a non-pedestrian zone, but in the last few days, it has been noted that some pedestrians are ignoring it and causing damage to the landscaping. Councillors of Gran Alacant, Óscar Valenzuela and Borja Merino, have stated, “We must allow the growth of the planted species and not cause damage to them as is happening currently. This is also a serious matter of road safety and the consequent risk to pedestrians. We ask that this area is not be stepped on or walked over. Residents who need to cross the street should use the pedestrian crossing intended for this purpose”. They also added that “we have been working tirelessly to improve the living conditions here in GA, but to maintain the infrastructure in the best conditions we need a constructive attitude and respect by all, so we ask for the co-operation of ALL residents”.

VANDALISM OF BINS

Waste collection containers were recently vandalised in the lower area of Gran Alacant. If anyone has any information on this illegal activity, we would like to hear from you.

Preventative treatments have been carried out to control the larvae of the processionary caterpillar in pine trees in dog parks, gardens, parks and transit areas in GA. What are the effects of processionary caterpillars? If they come in contact with skin, they can cause a variety of reactions, notably painful rashes. Irritation can also occur if the hairs lodge in the mucosa of the conjunctiva or in the respiratory tract. Several cases of anaphylactic reactions have been reported in recent years.

NEW TO 2024 CUSTOMER REVIEWS

What do processionary caterpillars do to dogs? Your dog may pick up the hairs on his paws and lick them because of the itching they cause. This will bring the bristles into contact with the mouth and nose. The tongue may become so large and swollen that the air passages can also become blocked leading to suffocation and death.

Rail to Charity I was wondering whether any readers of your excellent magazine are remotely interested in Model Railways or, more to the point perhaps, owning mine? My wife and I both share similar interests, including Animal Rescue and Welfare in Spain and are currently trying to raise funds for the Dogs and Donkeys! The layout which we are offering is the result of ten years in collecting and modelling Hornby Dublo(00) guage based on LMS and B.R. stock operating in the Midlands region around 50s/60s period. The system is entirely digital now, and able to operate more than one train on a single track. We currently have 10 Locos, mostly fitted with sound, and with suitable rolling stock. The eldest, and taking pride of place for the Golden Jubilee being, "Princess Royal Class" Princess Elizabeth" which has been fitted with gold plated running gear for the occasion. The Steam Passenger and Goods locos progress through to the Type 100 Diesel Multiple Unit plus one Type 25 and one Type 40 "Whistler" passenger diesel. The custom made table upon which the layout is mounted measures 2.2 metres square. We are looking to raise upwards of 800 Euros and the buyer will be responsible for the dismantling and removal. As Animal Rescue is in urgent need of funds towards overheads and winter foodstuffs, we have also offered to sell my nearly new Electric Cycle (open frame and fully sprung) for a similar price. About GA BootCamps & Personal Training

Scottish born Lynne Lowe came to Gran Alacant with her husband Steve 7 years ago. She began working as Fitness Co-ordinator at Santara Resort, her role was to provide a Fitness Programme for groups of Dutch clients suffering from Burnout. After lockdown, Santara Resort closed its Spa and Gym facilities which meant Lynne had to become selfemployed in order to continue delivering the Burnout Programme. This also meant that Lynne was able to deliver her own classes for the residents of Gran Alacant.

Why are you so passionate about Group Fitness

“I used to be obsessed with dancing as a child; I loved performing and loved competitions. In my teenage years, I stopped dancing and had a weekend job in a bakery and a local chip shop. Eating more and moving less meant I piled weight on. I spent the next few years trying fad diets, starving myself, binging, taking laxatives and making myself sick. I was not happy in my own skin. I love food and depriving myself of it just makes me miserable so I started exercising. I was too unfit and ashamed of my body to go to a fitness class so I would do home workouts every morning until I felt confident enough to join group sessions. When I joined a local class I was obsessed again, I absolutely loved the motivation and magic that happened working out with other people.”

What was special about Santara Resort

“Working at Santara Resort was a pivotal time in my life. The week before I started working there, I stopped drinking alcohol. I was in a bad place physically, mentally and emotionally. My job helping others helped me in my recovery. I can honestly say the 5 years I worked there I learned so much about myself, about human behaviour, group dynamics and the power we all have to make a difference

in our own lives. It was humbling, life changing and I am so grateful for that experience.”

What did you do before

“I worked for local government for many years. I then worked abroad for a Tour Operator for a few years. I even went back to full time education at University not really knowing what I wanted to do with my life. It never occurred to me to actually train in something I enjoyed! When I finally trained to become a Fitness Instructor I was the oldest in my class. After I qualified, I was offered more and more classes. One day I realised my classes would cover my bills so I ditched the day job and became self-employed. Doing what I LOVE for a living was one of the BEST decisions of my life. Marrying my handsome husband and stopping drinking were the other BEST decisions of my life.”

What is your favourite class

“Aqua, which is surprising because it used to be my least favourite. Back home I would pray a kid had taken a poo in the pool so my class was cancelled. Teaching outdoors in the beautiful Spanish sunshine is completely different. I am very grateful Bernar allows us to use his pool.”

What is special about GA BootCamps

“The focus is not all about physical fitness. Emotional and social wellbeing play a big part in our overall health and happiness. I want people to come together, form friendships, support each other and have fun.

We have created a lovely fitness community with a group of genuinely amazing people. The group enjoy a coffee after class and we have end of month events where we support our venue ‘Bernar’s Place’ and get to know each other a little better.”

BEST thing about your job

“The people I work with. They are truly incredible. They never fail to impress me, make me laugh and they have been known to make me cry (happy tears). I have so much love for them. So many different characters all bringing their own unique personalities to the group. The energy it creates, for me, is just magical.”

CHALLENGING aspect of your job

“Learning Spanish. I teach three fitness classes a week in Spanish and it just blows my mind because I really do not think my Spanish is good enough. I have weekly Spanish lessons with Dani from Speechless in Spain. She is so passionate about her job and I love seeing that passion in others.”

Do you have any advice for people wanting to get FIT & HEALTHY

“Taking responsibility for your own health and fitness is the best gift in self-care you can give yourself. Find something you enjoy doing. If exercise feels like a chore then you are not going to stick at it. Listen to your body and work at your own pace. Enjoy the experience of what your body CAN do and worry less about what you can’t.”

ADVOCATING RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP IN SANTA POLA AND GRAN ALACANT alike, including Canine Halloween, Santa Claus for Dogs, and socialisation days.

We are ASPETGA, the pet owners association of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, dedicated to fostering responsible pet ownership in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. Founded as a non-profit organization by a group of passionate neighbors, including a local veterinarian, ASPETGA focuses on promoting awareness of local regulations, with a particular emphasis on waste collection. Our mission is to facilitate peaceful coexistence between pet owners and the community, advocating for specially designated spaces for pets, such as dog parks and beaches. For over a decade, ASPETGA has been tirelessly working towards the well-being of our furry companions. During this time, we’ve actively supported vulnerable families by assisting with the feeding and veterinary care expenses of their beloved pets. Notable among our achievements is the creation of the Gran Alacant dog park, recognized as one of the best in the province, alongside the Santa Pola dog park and La Caleta dels Gossets, the Santa Pola dog beach. Beyond these initiatives, we organize engaging events for dogs and families

In collaboration with the Santa Pola city council, we spearhead civic campaigns to raise awareness among dog owners about responsible waste disposal. Our motto, “I am responsible, I clean up,” underscores our commitment to fostering a clean and safe environment for all. In 2015, we established the Pet Food Bank to support the most vulnerable families in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. Through collaboration with the Santa Pola Red Cross and Social Services, we provide essential nutrition and, when resources permit, assist with veterinary expenses. Understanding that economic pressures contribute to pet abandonment, we strive to keep families and their pets together by offering assistance. ASPETGA relies entirely on volunteer efforts and funding derived from donations, raffles, sales at markets, and charitable events – not a penny from government or public sources. Since 2015, we’ve distributed over 10,000 kilograms of pet food, as well as, when

funds permitted, extended financial aid for veterinary bills when needy families face difficulties covering costs due to illness or injury. In times of crisis, ASPETGA extends its reach beyond local borders. During the early days of the war in Ukraine, we collaborated with 50 other animal charities to collect and send aid. Our community’s support and the generosity of local veterinary clinics made this initiative possible. Two years ago, we expanded our support to authorized feral cat colony managers, recognizing their vital role in controlling the health and population of stray cats. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of neighbors like you. Fundraising events, such as those held at Tommy’s, play a crucial role in sustaining our mission. Thank you!

THE NORWEGIAN CLUB - GRAN ALACANT AGOST MOUNTAIN HIKE 2023

Our favourite trip of 2023 was the Monday hike in the mountains north of Agost. El Estrert Nacimiento y Casa the Xau (wikiloc). Via Verde is a beautiful and scenic route starting in Agost and stretches into the Maigmo mountain. In the mountains north of Via Verde, there are fantastic trails and scenery. We enjoyed walking in a dried out riverbed with dramatic peaks and old roads. We encountered small basins with koi fish and had a nice stop at Casa Xau (Casita).

ON SHIFTING SANDS The town of Guardamar del Segura has been subject to the forces of nature and geography throughout its history. Its prime location on the coast adjacent to the mouth of the Segura River has been both a blessing and curse. The town traces its history back to a Phoenician settlement at the mouth of the river and occupation in the area continued in various forms throughout ancient, medieval and modern times. The broad coastline and river permitted fishing and trade to develop however on occasion have brought harm and threat to the inhabitants of the town. The entire town was destroyed in an earthquake in 1829 and rebuilt as a planned grid. The rebuilt town was however not to enjoy peace for long. The shifting sands of the coast fed by deposits brought downstream by the River Segura began to engulf the town until its continued existence was under threat. A solution was needed to save the town. The task was undertaken by a brilliant engineer Francisco Mira y Botella . His plan was to effectively lock the coastal sand into place using vegetation. To accomplish this task a programme of planting and cultivation of extensive vegetation consisting of both native and imported species was embarked upon. The hugely ambitious project began in 1896 and was overseen by Francisco Mira for 28 years. The planting included cypresses, pines, palms and species of grass to bind and stabilise the sand with their root systems. The resulting growth not only successfully stopped the sand dunes but also created one of the most wonderful features of our local coastline.

The trees, shrubs and grasses came to form the Alfonso XIII park, named after the ill-fated and exiled king who was on the spanish throne at the time of the original planting of the forest and also the later Reina Sofía park named for the much respected queen consort of the equally illfated and also exiled King Juan Carlos. The planting system devised by Francisco Mira created an artificial coastal dune planted mostly with grasses and shrubs to stabilise the coastal sands and an inland slope forested with larger trees. Over the years this planning has matured into a dense zone of wooded areas and broad dunes. The original Alfonso XIII park extends to 800 hectares and includes the original historic parts of the scheme, it has been declared a spanish natural park and is the smallest such park in the country. It is possible to enjoy walking through the park along paths and walking routes that criss cross the park; these paths link the beach, town and marina areas. The park contains charming whitewashed buildings dating from its creation which still serve the dedicated team who care for this unique man made coastal park. One recently uncovered feature of the park is

However the story of the impact of nature upon the human inhabitants of Guardamar was not ended by the creation of Francisco Mira’s artificial dunes and forest. Instead of encroaching sands threatening to swallow the town the issue on the town’s coastline is now the loss of sand and the erosion of the beach. This process is causing the loss of parts of the beach and the buildings situated immediately adjacent. The coastal law prohibits the repair or replacement of the damaged buildings and gradually the owners are seeing their beachfront properties washed away. The line of crumbling buildings lining the beach is now another feature of this constantly hanging coast. a rare muslim period religious building. It is believed to have been a spiritual retreat consisting of individual rooms for private religious contemplation. It probably dates from around the 9th century and is unique in Spain. The Reina Sofía park is smaller and immediately adjacent to the town of Guardamar. It is a family park with lakes and animals to enjoy, there are also cafes and restaurants. If you do visit these beautiful parks spare a thought for Francisco Mira and his team of foresters, gardeners, engineers and workers who for decades toiled to make a paradise from shifting sands.

The story of Guardamar del Segura is one of human interaction with nature. Ultimately only respectful cooperation with nature will work. Francisco Mira worked with the sands, saved the town and made a paradise; we would do well to learn his lessons.

Return to our homeland for christmas Poem by Julie Lewis Let’s spend the festive season at home – thats where we want to be Spend Christmas day and new year too with friends and family. We should have been prepared of course for what would greet us there We left behind sun, sea, and sand – are we the foolish pair? The house was like an igloo, the snow 6 inches deep We had to wear our wellie socks to help us get to sleep. The routine shop to fill the fridge – emptied our account How shocked we were to total up the final full amount Potholes deeper than the snow on every road and lane Traffic moving slowly and driving us insane. Huffs and puffs and 4 letter words replaced our usual smiles Vehicles at a standstill now - 3 hours to do 4 miles! Torrential rain replaced the snow the weather’s getting grim Noahs left without us and so we’ll have to swim. Boots and socks and hoodies too are needed in the storm Thermals, gloves and fleeces in an effort to keep warm. One fine day was all we had, to set the garden straight The tulip bulbs i planted – the squirrels promptly ate! The council’s new initiative – I’m sure that it’s a sin Now we have to pay them – to empty our brown bin! But all of thats forgotten, its plain for all to see We’ve had the most fantastic time with friends and family. A grandchild keeps you young at heart – fun and games and stuff We’ve currently got six of them – and frankly thats enough! So even though the weathers grim and the economy off track Theres always one good reason to keep us coming back Smiles and hugs and laughter too – it warms you to the core So we’ll be back for certain – Christmas 2024!

“GASS - GA Single Socials”

Fed up with being the only single person at the table when you go out with friends!

Are you looking for like minded single companions? Then I may have the answer “GASS - GA Single Socials”. I propose this new group specially for singles to mix and mingle and find other likeminded single companions - a meal, a coffee meet up, a day at the beach or just a trip into Santa Pola. Having now completed our first gettogether I am pleased to report a great turn out, almost equal men and women! Needless to say it was a lively, noisy couple of hours! We discussed what we wanted from the group and our interests etc. It is apparent this mixed group was needed and appreciated! We did dominate the space at the “London Tavern” but as usual we were well looked after!

Going forward we are looking at a cycling group and if we can find a suitable swimming pool nearby, a swimming group, as well as the usual lunches/social gettogethers etc! As the weather improves we plan some beach days! As Valentines Day is approaching we will be discussing if, how, as a social group we can celebrate. Watch this space! All in all it was a very positive start and everybody chipped in with ideas - even our one lady from Argentina who spoke no English but we managed to converse with our Spanish! Looking forward to our next meeting, Shaunagh

DEPRESSION IN CATS Despite this moment of the year (middle of winter, when days are getting longer and nights are getting shorter), implies a peak of activity in cats, specially non neutered ones, some of them look like they don’t realize, and for various reasons, they might suffer from depression, which is not an exclusive matter of humans or dogs, because, the fact that a cat is an independent, going-its-own-way being, is not as real as it looks like. But it’s true that indoor cats don’t like changes, and a sudden change of their daily routine, such as moving to a new home (one of the most common causes. Some cats in this situation may decide to run away and return to the previous home), new diet, a new animal at home (a cat or any other species), a new baby, or just men at work next door, could be enough for starting the process. First of all - which are the tell-tale symptoms of feline depression? Unsurprisingly, very similar to the ones in humans; constant sleeping, apathy, significant changes in appetite, difficulties to maintain their hygiene, which may imply poor self-cleaning and problems when using the litter tray, becoming destructive and/or aggressive, non-stop vocalizations, long periods of selfisolation, etc. Of course, not all these signs might manifest themselves, and this is not a comprehensive checklist: depression may look different in every individual. Some of them may even develop bladder infections and kidney damage just because they are not feeling psychologically well. If you suspect your cat may be struggling with depression, the first step is to book an appointment with your Vet in order to confirm the diagnosis, because some of these signs are not exclusive of depression and they may indicate tens of other pathologies, and, if necessary, to start a treatment, which may consist of:

Smooth caresses and massages for relaxation.

At least 30 minutes a day for games. The ideal ones for cats are those ones which simulate catching a prey, such as false stuffed mice, or chasing a laser pointer. Another valid one would be the ones in which the cat has to find hidden food by using its intelligence.

Direct sunlight and enjoying the nature (you can use a harness or a special backpack for carrying cats).

In case the cause of the depression is having lost a human or animal friend, it could be a good idea to provide a new one, in some cases.

Of course, if apart from the psychological symptoms there are urinary tract problems, they must be treated apart, but it’s very important to find out if they are caused by depression, because, if that is the case and we just treat bladder and kidneys, the treatment won’t work at all.

However, you as the owner, play a key role in your cat’s welfare. Apart from the Vet’s recommended patterns, you will be encouraged to pay special attention to your pet, making sure it gets enough sunlight, entertainment and those nice caresses at its belly from you. Depression is a gruelling thing to deal without any help, no matter if you are a human or an animal. Oftentimes the solution lays within the support our loved ones provide us, and understanding it’s not a shameful thing nor a sign of weakness to ask for help. Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have their own Elche CF supporters club to attend home games at the stadium and watch away games in local bars around Gran Alacant. Home games see the group move around different bars in Gran Alacant as their meeting place, with the usual bars used being Happy’s at the GA Centre while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill. From there, the group, which is primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges car-sharing to get up to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to Gran Alacant afterwards. Travel to the ground is problematic with no easy public transport links. With the group sharing driving duties, they have managed to shift larger groups of fans to games. Tickets are always easy to come by this season with the club being in the second division. They can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well, with a number of new attendees coming along having read this column.

Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the actual date and time of the match to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand. The home league games in February are against Burgos on 2 February at 20:30 and then Eibar on the weekend of 18 February - date and time to be confirmed. After a slow start to the season, Elche are now challenging towards the top of the table.

GALS (Gran Alacant Ladies) FEBRUARY ROUNDUP Well we have certainly been busy again over the past month. We rounded off the year with two great lunches at La Piedra and James Restaurants. Throughout the year our generous ladies have been donating funds raised by raffles at these events. We can now reveal that a total of 1140e has been donated to Elche Childrens Care Hospital which was our chosen charity for 2023. Thank you too to the restaurants who kindly donated free lunches as prizes in the raffles. We have been voting through December for our 2024 charity and can now reveal that the local breast cancer charity 3Afecto has been chosen by our members. This is close to the hearts of many of our ladies and we hope to continue our fund raising for this new charity. We have had over 400 members attend our lunches in 2023 plus around 200 members who came to our informal coffee mornings over the year. Its also fantastic to see the new friendships that have been forged between ladies of all nations.

Hi, my name is Geoff and I have been asked by Lou to challenge you every month with a few teasers. I hope you enjoy them. I first came to GA in 2001 and bought my house in 2002 where I have been a regular visitor ever since. You will see me at the quizzes, or out and about, running or cycling. If you see me come and say hi, or, just give me a cheery hello. I am also a big lover of live music and try to see as many live acts as I can.
