DECEMBER 2023 ISSUE 227

Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: Disability Access MASA Square Good morning Lou Thank you for meeting Asun, Lawyer at Gestidem, and I recently to discuss the mobility access at MASA Square. Two suggestions made were a dropped curb on the pavement leading to the existing ramp by the Belfry, or a painted area requesting no parking to allow access at the rear of the empty unit. I can foresee problems with the second suggestion as when this unit opens again there may be a customer seating area with tables and chairs providing another hazard to negotiate with a wheel chair, mobility scooter or other equipment. As there is allegedly work commencing to repair the shocking state of the pavements around the square, the first suggestion of the dropped curb would seem the most sensible and most economical way forward. As Asun is under the impression no one parking a vehicle in the area will adhere to the markings on the road, perhaps they would if the markings were next to a dropped curb. Again many thanks and lovely to meet you. Kind Regards, Jan GA Advertisers reply: Hi Jan Thank you for your email, it was lovely to meet you too. Since our meeting, I met Asun and she confirmed that “blue disability no parking sign” would be painted at the back entrance of MASA Square. This should happen within next few months and will make disability access to MASA square easier and safer for all. Q: Crossing on N332 Hello, I am Pieter from Flanders, Belgium. We have been holidaying in Gran Alacant

for many years. We have not yet settled here due to our work situation, but we hope to within a few years. We always have our bicycles with us and we ride from Gran Alacant every day. For years, we have heard promises about a passerelle for cyclists and pedestrians on the N332 and after many years of promises, nothing has ever materialised. Can we ask Gran Alacant Councillor Oscar Valenzuela about this life-threatening situation of crossing the N332 back to the commercial centre? This is not just a question from me, but from many cyclists who wish to practice their hobby in safe conditions. Currently it is very dangerous to cross by bicycle if you come back via Balsares, El Altet and Valverde. In my opinion, the best location would be going left (direction centro commercial, AJ hotel) next to the current road to cross the bridge to the N332. No disruption to the gas station and to the left of the bridge there is a piece of land completely overgrown on the other side of the N332. Thank you for your time. Kind Regards Pieter Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: Thank you for your email. This is a very good question. We are aware of this problem but this is the responsibility of Ministry of Roads (Obras Publicas) as the N332 and 50 meters each side of the road belongs to them. What we can do is to keep requesting these improvements be made. There are no plans to make a “passerelle” (pedestrian bridge) but there are plans for a new slip road leading from Gran Alacant to Alicante as well as adding cycling lanes. All these improvements take time but they are on our agenda.

LARGE ITEMS COLLECTIONS

Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY. Please Whatsapp only this number any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on. This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy. Q: Bus Stop I hope that you can pass on our request: In the past, the Alicante/Santa Pola bus used to divert from the beach around Hispania past the Carabassi bars and past the school, then on up the hill to pick up outside the Costa Azul and the Patagonian Steak House. This was much better than going straight up the hill from the beach where it collects no passengers. The original route I mention did collect many more people and was a valuable service for all the houses there, especially on Saturday morning for the Santa Pola market. Please can you suggest that this route is reinstated even if only for the Saturday morning market run? Thank you. Neil Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: Vectalia are a private transport company but I will ask them at our next meeting if it is possible to alter the bus route. Q: Traffic Calming Measures We have an apartment overlooking the new temporary school at Altomar II. The perimeter road that encloses the urbanisation of Don Pueblo and Altomar II has partial traffic calming but not in the area of the new school. This I feel is a potential disaster waiting to happen. Kind regards Malcolm Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: Thank you for your very good observation.

We actually had a meeting about this last week with police, engineers and Councillor for Health and Safety. We decided to put more police officers in the area to direct the traffic during the peak hours to ensure the safety but if any problems arise, police will be issuing penalties to any reckless drivers. LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA

IMPROVED HEALTH CARE FOR GRAN ALACANT

The Mayor of Santa Pola, Loreto Serrano, and the Councillor for Health Borja Merino met last Monday with the Manager of the University Hospital of Elche, Andrés Navarro, and the Medical Director of Primary Care, Jorge Guijarro, and the Nursing Director Manuela Ibarra, with the aim of coordinating actions to improve the quality of healthcare in Gran Alacant. Three issues have been highlighted which require prompt attention. 1.Long waiting lists: In some cases, there are waiting times of up to a month to be

seen by the family doctor. It is impossible for users to request an appointment at the Santa Pola Health Centre using the mobile phone application GVA Salut, since this function was disabled.

GET IN SHAPE WITH THE NEW CALISTHENICS PARK

2.Unjustified delays: regarding the late arrival of ambulances for emergency cases. 3.Crowds of patients in the emergency: room, which causes an overspill, and patients having to wait outside causing likely detriment to their health in times of extreme heat or cold. The Councillor for Health, Borja Merino, said, “the current situation of our health centre is very concerning, this is why we are insisting the Department of Health of Elche and the Ministry of Health find solutions to these problems that are causing harm to our citizens.” Merino continued, “Both parties have agreed to start working on a study for the expansion of our health centre and on the viability of a new office building in Gran Alacant. Gran Alacant deserves better health care taking into account not only the census population, but also the actual population during the year, which is much higher than the official population, notwithstanding further users who choose us as a vacation destination and who may also need medical assistance.”

SOCIAL SERVICES FOR THE RESIDENTS OF GRAN ALACANT

The Councillor for Social Services, Gela Roche, and the Councillor for Gran Alacant Óscar Valenzuela, accompanied by Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Encarni Ramírez, visited the technicians of the Department of Social Services. This new service aims to bring social services closer to the residents of Gran Alacant. The facilities are located at Santara Wellness Resort on Monte de Santa Pola Street.

Being in shape is within everyone's reach in the new calisthenics park in Gran Alacant. The new calisthenics park located at 71 Calle Creta in Gran Alacant, next to the dog park and children's games area, is now available for use.

Mayor Loreto Serrano, together with the Councillors of Gran Alacant, Óscar Valenzuela and Borja Merino, the Councillor for Sports Ángel Piedecausa and the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Encarni Ramírez, have visited the already completed installation.

Calisthenics is resistance training with your own body weight. It is designed to improve strength, flexibility, agility, balance, coordination and aerobic conditioning almost all the skills a person needs to stay fit. In this new sports area, a circuit has been installed consisting of several elements that involve all muscle groups, with an explanatory panel that indicates how to perform the different exercises and tips to avoid possible muscle injuries.

“GASS - GA Single Socials”

“GA singles” - Fed up with being the only single person at the table when you go out with friends!

Are you looking for like minded single companions? Then I may have the answer “GASS - GA Single Socials”. I propose this new group specially for singles to mix and mingle and find other likeminded single companions - a meal, a coffee meet up, a day at the beach or just a trip into Santa Pola. I would anticipate this building to a social group where eventually you can make your own arrangements between yourselves but initially I need to gauge interest, so would propose a Coffee meet up in January for interested parties and if enough are onboard maybe a Valentine’s Day meal you never know who you might meet - which I will organise. If interested let me know and I will kick it off!

Book of the month by Beth A compelling read and a very emotional page-turner

My Recommended Book of the Month

The Herd By Emily Edwards Elizabeth and Bryony are polar opposites but their unexpected friendship has always worked. They are the best of friends and godmothers to each others daughters – because they both trust that the safety of their children is their top priority.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

Little do they realize that they have differing views over one very important issue. And when Bryony, afraid of being judged, tells what is supposed to be a harmless white lie before a child’s birthday party, the consequences are more catastrophic than either of them could ever have imagined. This is a dramatic, compassionate and thought provoking book. I really enjoyed it and related to the moral and ethical debate. The author is showing you the different attitudes of husband and wife, friends and neighbours and of course the media.

JOIN OUR CLUB Wednesday 31 January 2pm, Skipper Bar MASA Square

We meet up once a month, discuss the books we are reading now and suggest new ones. Anyone interested in joining us or looking for more information please contact

Have you always wanted to work with ANIMALS

Yes. We always had pets in our family growing up. They were part of the family. We never had a Christmas where our pets did not get a present too. When I finished school I studied Chiromassage, but I knew always that my dream was to work with animals. My studies in Chiromassage helps me today to enjoy bathing the animals and giving them relaxing massages. The most beautiful feeling is to see a pet relaxed in my hands. I have done a lot of training around pets and their wellbeing so I can give them the best care and attention possible.

BEST thing about your job

Another client arrived with special food for his dogs stay at the hotel. He asked for help unloading his dogs from his car. When we went to the car he realised he had left his dogs and his wife at home!

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB

Our motto at Caniresort is “no client or pet is too difficult for us”. We specialise in looking after pets with special needs and handicaps. No matter what kind of special attention your pet needs, the team will gladly be there for them. Whether they need regular medication during the day/ night, are on a specific diet, are deaf or blind, or require additional therapies, we will look after them. I think the most challenging thing is leaving the pets to go home. We treat them like our family so when we leave we really miss them. We sometimes have pets that stay with us for up to 2 months. We get so attached to them that it is not uncommon for us to be crying when they go home. ANY TOP TIPS FOR ANIMAL OWNERS Yes absolutely! Love your pet as much as you love yourself, and treat them with the same respect you get from them.

For me there is no better job in the world. Being in nature with animals, caring for them, it is just amazing. Pets have their own unique personalities and it is a joy working with them.

Be relaxed when you bring your pet to the hotel. Your pet can pick up on any stress or tension so if you are relaxed this makes it a better experience for your pet. Think of your pet’s stay with us as their own holiday.

Any FUNNY stories

Caniresort Costa Blanca discovers a world of happiness for your pet. We´ve packed all our expertise in to designing a sanctuary that is dedicated to unleashing happiness and enriching the lives of pets and their families. I am slightly biased, but I think there is no better place.

Just last week, I had a family who were at the airport ready to check in when they realised they had forgotten to bring their pet to the pet hotel. I went to collect their dog from the airport as they were running out of time.

Music in the gardens. December 2023 Late summer took us a little further than usual from our “home turf”. In September we met up with old friends for a musical night out in a very special venue; the Alhambra Palace in Granada. Tucked away in the historic gardens of the Generalife Palace is a small walled open air stage. This stage hosts performances by a variety of artists ranging from classical through flamenco to rock. Perhaps betraying our age, we had tickets for one of the giants of ‘90s indie rock - Suede.

The band played to a packed venue, rolling out their hits with a disarming freshness and charm that was matched by the evident affection in which they were held by the international audience. Nothing touches the human spirit and heart as much as music and the power of anthems from one’s youth is never really lost. Singer Brett Anderson

The Alhambra music stage is built on one side of a small valley in the Palace grounds affording stunning close up views of the main part of the famous palace complex. The floodlit red towers of the palace serving as perhaps the most spectacular backdrop imaginable for pre concert drinks in the delightful bar terrace - certainly a change from the sticky floored “Good Mixer” pub of the original Camden Britpop days! is so shockingly well preserved that it was indeed possible to imagine oneself transported back in time to the innocence of youth. The strong hints of gender fluidity that were such a famous hallmark of Suede’s music seem less shocking now but only because they appear prescient and ahead of their time (even if Bowie had done it 20 years before Suede - but that’s another story altogether…). In truth, Suede never really fitted with the other gods of Britpop, always standing slightly apart from the frenzied crowd pleasing of the holy trinity of Blur, Oasis and Pulp. Hearing Anderson and the band play it is now possible to properly appreciate the quality of their songwriting and artistry. The place conjured up by their classic songs

is a provincial world inhabited by young figures determined to find glamour amid the dreary realities of everyday life. Great pop music can be poetic and serve as the folk music of modern people; describing our lives and dreams. Suede’s best work married great tunes with a sensibility that touched a generation - it still does. Hearing this powerful and gritty music in the dreamscape of the Alhambra gardens was somewhat disconcerting but none the worse for that, Suede’s music has always truly been about dreams in any event. The ethereal setting of the Alhambra is perhaps a fitting place in which to enjoy this music of dreams and longing. We spent the rest of the weekend enjoying the many delights of the beautiful city of Granada. Although the city was full with visitors it was possible to find quiet streets and squares away from the throng. One way to escape the crowds is to take a drink in the historic Alhambra Palace Hotel which sits just down from the actual Alhambra complex. This famous hotel was built in 1910 to cater for the rich tourists who

were starting to be attracted to the historic charms of Granada, even including a casino amongst its attractions. The hotel’s most impressive feature is a stunning terrace bar that looks out over the city below. The entire building is decorated in a style inspired by the moorish architecture of the Alhambra and is a wonderful survival from the golden era of leisure travel. Our last night was spent exploring the historic warren of whitewashed lanes that make up the famous Albaicin quarter. Probably nowhere in Spain comes closer to evoking the lost world of Muslim Spain, glimpses of hidden gardens with fruit trees and fountains, narrow cobbled passages opening out to sudden plazas, ancient churches built over even older mosques and synagogues - nothing comes close to this wonderful survival from an ancient Iberia. Granada worked its magic spell, as it always does. This most beautiful and civilised of cities offers so much to inspire the imagination whether it is mysterious lost Al Andalus or glorious slightly kitsch Edwardian grand hotels the city has something for every dreamer. And for us, one magical night reliving our lost youth in the moonlit gardens of the most famous palace in the world.

DOGS SIXTH SENSE AND BEYOND

About one month ago, we were watching a television program about science for kids and teenagers. That day they were talking about magnetism, and a guest said dogs (or at least some dogs), are able to feel Earth magnetism. How was this peculiar ability discovered? Believe it or not, both male and female dogs, when time to poo, usually turn several times searching for the North Pole, just like the needle of a compass, and when they find it, they “do their business”. Of course, not every dog turns when going to the toilet, but most of the ones which do it, point the magnetic North Pole. Dogs, no disrespect to cats, are amazing creatures. They are able not only to feel Earth magnetism, but some other surprising abilities, such as an extremely enhanced smells and sounds perception. This is something that doesn’t need to be explained because everybody knows very well. Besides, since dogs are been our companions for 10,000 years, their evolution has been parallel to ours: little by little, lots of different breeds have appeared, with different body shape and size, but also with different abilities. Have you ever wondered why are there

police dogs, rescue dogs, or guide dogs for blind or disabled people? Dogs (most of them) are able to learn lots of things, and besides they love interacting with humans. We all know family dogs which follow their family wherever they go: they will swim, run next to a bicycle, walk in the snow... whatever is necessary. And this is the initial requirement for selecting a good candidate for police dog: want to learn (which means, for a dog, want to play), and want to be with “its” human. For this reason they choose breeds with natural inclination towards playing, such as Belgian Malinois. In fact, practically almost every dog could be a police dog, no matter about size or gender, but it’s true that those breeds which have been selected for police purposes generation after generation are easier to train. It happens the same with hunting or shepherd dogs: some breed seem to have in their DNA the ability of detecting rabbits or driving cattle. Police dogs are purchased by law enforcement when they are puppies. They are assigned to an officer who will take care of it and will be its trainer. The bond between dog and trainer is very strong, and it’s game based. The reward for the dog when doing a job, whatever the final result is, is to play with its trainer. This means: a drug-sniffing dog, after finishing its task will play with its trainer, no matter if it has found drugs or not. These dogs seem to have real superpowers, and they are able to detect drugs, explosives, buried persons with an incredible precision, so their job is very important for protecting us.

BARGAIN LOVING BRI

In May of this year, Julie Broderick decided that she wanted to beat her husband at his own game – quite literally and so she set about establishing a Womens Walking Football group here in Gran Alacant. Men’s Walking Football in Gran Alacant has been established for several years. The group has played regularly at the indoor sports centre and more recently on the new Astroturf pitch since September. Attendees at the men’s session which currently takes place on Wednesdays at 12 midday, have increased steadily over the past few months. Members include those permanently resident in Gran Alacant and visitors to the area who might only be here for a short while. The campaign to establish a Womens Walking Football group began with an invitation to any women who would like to take part in a taster session. Flyers were distributed, articles written, and David Lamb and John Broderick from the Men’s team volunteered to coach the group. Members of the Men’s group have very kindly supported at every session to ensure numbers are feasible whilst the group becomes established. An article in the Costa Blanca News about the taster session attracted the attention of the Red Sauce Production company which is the company responsible for the filming of the popular Bargain Loving Brits Series currently shown in the UK on Channel 5. A phone call to Julie resulted in the company expressing much interest in the establishment of the Women’s Walking Football group and in the competitiveness which clearly exists between husband and wife.

Following several phone conversations, form filling and background checks, (not to mention hair appointments) the team were ready to welcome the camera crew. The production company had expressed an interest in exploring further the competitiveness between Julie and her husband John and so filming began at their house in GA to witness preparations for the big game! Rivalry was already evident as will be seen in the forthcoming programme – release date yet to be confirmed. Arrival at the Sports Centre and 16 players (12 women and 4 men) were in attendance plus a small crowd of about 20 supporters! Selection of the teams ensued with the Brodericks, the Campbells and the Clarks (all husband-and-wife competitors) designated opposite teams to increase the tension (and the risk of domestics later in the day)! John Fraser (a stalwart of the Men’s team) had volunteered to referee the match and David Lamb took participants through their paces in the warmup.

ITS IN THE SUN ...... IN GRAN ALACANT!

The game itself was closely fought with goals from Linda E who scored a hat trick for the Blues and Julie B (1) and Carolyn (2) for the Pinks. The score at the final whistle being a respectable 3-3 due to a dubiously awarded penalty in the final minutes! However, the camera crew weren't happy with a draw and so a tense penalty shoot-out was the decider with the Blues (Johns team) being the victors. Overall, the day was an immense success. All players and Spectators enjoyed the experience. The camera crew were friendly and very accommodating. El Tio Chato provided tasty refreshments and feedback has been very positive

lifestyle no matter what their age or ability. The Gran Alacant community are privileged to have access to a fantastic outdoor astroturf pitch (plus other facilities) at the Polideportivo Sports Centre. The benefits to both physical and mental health of exercise and social activities are well documented elsewhere. Gran Alacant Walking Football Community is proud to have members from different nationalities who come together to enjoy this great experience. The advent of the Women’s Walking Football group is an example of how walking football in the area has grown over the years and especially since the installation of the excellent astroturf pitch. As well as the Women’s sessions and Men’s Wednesday sessions there are further opportunities to play walking football on Tuesdays and Fridays in Gran Alacant. For those who are able to venture further afield, there are also groups who play in Santa Pola on Mondays and Thursdays and in La Marina on Fridays. For further information regarding Women’s Walking Football please contact Julie on WhatsApp +44 792 618 7469 For further information regarding Men’s Walking Football please contact Steve on +34 642 01 05 15

There is importantly a wider message to be shared about the camaraderie, and fun element enjoyed whilst participating in Walking Football. The game helps people improve their fitness or maintain an active
