Two things to look out for on Gran Alacant this month are the Book Stall on the terrace of Oceans Bar on the 14th from 9am until 3pm in aid of K9 animal rescue and also at Oceans Bar on the 21st a K9 charity Race night, more info on that on Oceans advert. We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! We start this month with information to help the many visitors to our urbanisation over the busy summer months and the many people reading online who may be out in the next few months. The Spanish run bus company, Baile, have a timetable in this magazine, which includes a service that circuits Gran Alacant every 1/2 hour. Again see details of times. The Gran Alacant train is again, completely Spanish run, and circuits every hour, timetable also in this magazine.

Both the bus and the train are a good way of doing the circuit to see most of the areas of our urbanisation. FC Rent A Car have an advert in this issue if you would prefer to provide your own transport.

In addition to the above, at the Carabasi Complex you can rent scooters, bikes etc to help you explore the area.

presented various charities with cheques, from money raised during the year. The club is continually raising money for the good causes. This year a staggering 1,680 euro was handed over, to:Nicaragua Aid 250€ Royal British Legion 200€ Cruz Roja (local Red Cross) 200€ Macmillan Nurses (UK) 250€ MABS 250€ Paul Cunningham Nurses 250€ Elche Hospital 280€ Pictures include some of these presentations, also winners of the fun night, which was the start of fund raising for next year. Anyone and everyone can join this social club which raises money for these worthwhile causes. THE LOYAL TOAST The regular meeting of the Gran Alacant Branch of the Royal British Legion in Spain, is held on the first Tuesday of the month. That being so, their June meeting coincided with the

Thursdays sees the very popular street market, again, marked on our GA map. Hope this helps you all to enjoy your stay here with us residents. Plenty of picture news this month.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Consequently, during the meeting, members gathered round an original portrait, in oils, of Her Majesty; and toasted their thanks for her great achievements, and a hope for her continued good health.

The next set of pictures are from, what we termed, as a Wonderful Wedding. A Gran Alacant couple who met each other here on our urbanisation, were determined to hold their wedding here, with all of their Gran Alacant friends. We were at the evening party, and what a lovely evening it was. Held in the newly rejuvenated Plaza Mayor, it was the perfect setting, as we hope, our pictures show. We were also sent pictures (by Tony Hall) of the ceremony held in El Altet Church and the reception (by Stefan) at Molly Malones. Here is a report sent to us by Tom Fraser... I am surprised that none of the papers have had a mention of a fire on altomar 2 where an old couple have been left homeless, they had been there 20 days so no one knows much of the their background, Juan, one of their

neighbours, pulled them out at great risk to himself (black smoke).

6

We had fire engines, police, ambulances and paramedics, on the scene. We think it would be good if we could help the old couple and maybe a commendation for the brave neighbour. thanks Tom Fraser altomar2 966180817 This really does seem so typical of the good people which can be found here on Gran Alacant. We made the Town Hall aware of the incident. We were only asked the other day about the fishing boat museum at Santa Pola, when this came to us from the press office..

Through an initiative of the Department of Culture and Employment Workshop have managed to raise 412 euros in donations from visitors to the museum boat Esteban Gonzalez and who have in turn given this to the Fishermen's Association to fund the restoration of the chapel Virgen del Carmen. For more than two months as a promotional campaign after its inauguration last March, the entrance to the boat museum was free, but in recent weeks it was decided to launch this initiative with a piggy bank in which visitors to the Esteban Gonzalez could place their donations for that purpose. Councillor for Culture, Feli Dancer, has delivered the 412 euros to representatives of the Fishermen's Association.

At 7.30 am on the 8th of July, over 1000 swimmers met for the XVII edition of the Crossing Swim Tabarca - Santa Pola. Guillermo Verdejo was proclaimed winner with a time of one hour twenty minutes. Top-seeded Elena

7

Gonzalez was one hour and thirty minutes. It was a tough journey because of the strong current against them but was a great festival of swimming in Santa Pola. Brand new this year, among others was a Trophy “Steel Boat given to the first disabled man and woman for their effort and strength. At 3 kilometers there was a point for all swimmers to have a drink if they needed it. Moreover, given the increase in the number of participants, and always to ensure the safety of the swimmers there were more than 30 boats and 120 paddlers support volunteers. This year's donation of 1000 euros was for ADIPSA Association, Association of Mentally Disabled in Santa Pola. Alone from the Swimming Club would like to thank all aid: volunteers, canoeists, Local Police, Guardia Civil, Civil Protection, Red Cross, SAMU, Regional Directorate of Ports and Customs, Club Nautico de Santa Pola, sponsors and partners for helping to make it a success each year. Not to mention the collaboration of HE. City of Santa Pola and Tourism Competitiveness Plan of Santa Pola. From this point begins the countdown to prepare the crossing next year. www.clubnatacionalone.com Tuesday 14th August there will be a book stall on the terrace of Ocean Bar, from 9am - 3pm, in aid of K9 animal rescue centre.

cided it was time to improve the area near the end ramp. A collection was made and a further 4 tons of white stone was donated by Aquarius & Phoenix and a watering system was donated by Phoenix as some kind soul had stolen the original. The community have got together to keep it tidy in the future, as it had become a toilet for dogs and a litter bin. It is nice to see another of our regular advertisers celebrating an anniversary in business out here. This time Los Belgas celebrate 3 years at the Carabasi Complex. An email to us at the magazine. Hello .

Once again I have noticed an increase in dog mess on the pavements in Altomar 11 and around the life resort. There is a gully that joins the top road to the top swimming pool which is being used by dog owners as a pooing area. Also there is a Spanish lady who consistently lets her dog mess on the road next to the market field, she has a little dog and has been spotted by two people walking away from her dogs mess, and when approached just shrugs her shoulders and raises her arms then kicks it on to the market field. Last Tuesday while walking down to Websters bar there was a pile of mess obviously a big dog surely some people must see this happening. Its disgusting that owners allow this to happen These people who constantly let their dogs fowl the pavement need a heavy fine to stop then spoiling our lovely urbanization. regards Graham A big talking point this month has

10

been the meetings arranged between the police, Town Hall, and bar & restaurant owners. There have been numerous complaints from neighbours adjacent to some of these venues, concerning the level of noise. Music is not allowed outside on any of the terraces and doors should be closed so noise kept to a minimum so as not to annoy neighbours. The Town Hall realises this is a delicate problem, and a happy medium must be made between all who do or do not want, to enjoy these establishments. If noise is not kept to a reasonable level, the Police have the power to shut that establishment.

We have made known, the problems of non speaking Spanish being able to communicate at the health centre. It is of course understandable to take a translator for your doctors visit, but it gets very expensive to take one with you, everytime you only want to book an appointment. There appears sometimes no help at all to undertake this simple task. Loreto is to look into it for us. But she has told us there are forms that you can fill in and leave in the surgery if you are not happy with the service and that the forms are read by the Head of Department. talk again next month........

This is a story which is perfectly logical to all males: A wife asks her husband, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6."

Steve and Mayka would like to thank our families and friends in celebrating our marriage Thank you for all the presents and well wishes and we hope you all had a great time. A special thank you to Molly Malones for a great lunch. Times Square, Rumours, Hole in the Wall and Darby's Chippy for being so helpful and supportive. A special thanks also to Vanessa for a great buffet. Thanks also to Barry and Sandra Thank you all without you it would not have been the occasion it was.

A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?" He replied, "They had eggs." (I'm sure you're going back to read this again as this is the root of most marriage problems!!)

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Broccoli Pasta

Something a little different for those who are either not that keen on meat or who want a change. Spiral pasta is good. Be sure to make sauce in a container that is plenty big enough to avoid a volcanic like eruption and keep a close eye on it while cooking. Sauce Serves 4

Ingredients Pasta of choice (amount to taste!) 1 head of fresh broccoli 1 - 200 g cherry tomatoes ( how much do you like them?) - halved 3-4 spring onions, chopped 500 ml milk 3 tbsp cornflour 125 g strong grated cheese 1 tsp mustard (only if you like it) salt and pepper to taste dash grated nutmeg (if you have it)

Method 1. Cook pasta for a couple of minutes LESS than instructions on packet, but do not drain, it needs to keep warm and will continue cooking in the water. 2. While the pasta cooks, prepare the broccoli by cutting into small florets. 3. Steam or boil broccoli until tender, drain. 4. While the pasta and broccoli are cooking, prepare the cheese sauce. 5. In a large jug or bowl, whisk the flour and milk together 6. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time until thickened, stirring after each 30 seconds. 7. Add cheese, seasonings and mustard, mix well until smooth. 8. Assembly 9. Drain pasta well. 10. Add cheese sauce, drained broccoli, halved tomatoes and chopped spring onions, serve in deep bowls. broccoli to the cooked sauce but add the tomatoes and onion only to the portion you are eating, as you do not want either to be re heated.

TIMETABLE & ROUTE FOR THE GRAN ALACANT TOURIST TRAIN

A Day on Tabarca One of the things quite often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola via google, rang them up and booked on a Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine reserve. Damon the owner lives in Gran Alacant and was happy to pick us up on route to the Dive Centre 10 minutes away in Santa Pola. We were teamed up with a mixed group of English and Dutch families and after putting on our wetsuits (mostly back to front) fins and masks (scuba divers frown on them being called flippers and goggles apparently) and headed off to the island on the taxi speedboat. After arriving on Tabarca, Jake our ‘divemaster’ gave us a quick brief on how to put the gear on correctly, safety procedures and marine life we were likely to see. The first site we visited was called the black skull a small rock island about 100 meters from shore. Initially the water is only 1 to 2 meters deep which was great for the kids to gain confidence and the wetsuits actually helped them float. As soon as your mask breaks the surface you can see literally thousands of fish much to the kids and big kids delight. Around the back of the black skull the water is a little bit deeper and the more adventurous amongst us were ‘duck diving’ to the octopus holes Jake expertly spotted. After a quick break we headed to another site and went in the limestone caves, I was a little apprehensive about this at first but the caves turned out to be breath taking and not at all claustrophobic. Again the marine life was spectacular and the water as clear as a swimming pool. We headed back on the boat about 2pm with a boat load of smiley, tired kids and adults alike. It was a great day rounded of nicely with a cold drink in Marina Miramar.

Dive Academy runs Snorkel Safaris on Tues, Thurs and Saturdays. Tel 965 414 510 or 648 463 310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

IMMUNIZATION REACTIONS

Leishmaniasis vaccine was approved in Spain six months ago, and thousands of dogs have been vaccinated since. As anyone could expect, more than 50% of the total number of doses sold in Europe have been sold in Spain. So, it looks like, after this massive success of the new vaccine in Spain, is time to discuss about its possible side effects. As we were told previously by the manufacturer, this vaccine produces a higher number of reactions than the rest of the vaccines we use daily in dogs and cats, such as pain and swelling at the inoculation point, or a certain degree of lethargy the following 2-3 days. May these side effects appear with the ordinary vaccines? Yes: every medicine we use (other vaccines, antibiotics, painkillers, even vitamins), may eventually produce similar side effects. Post-vaccination side effects are normally caused, not by the antigen we inoculate, but by the preservatives and adjuvants (substances that help increasing the response the antigen makes the immunity develop). These additives are absolutely necessary, because the manufacturers tend to reduce more and more the antigen dose in modern vaccines, which is good, because it keeps the vaccine from producing the disease, so they add some substances such as aluminium salts, which make the immunitary response more powerful, even with a minimum dose of antigen, and the organism produces a higher quantity of antibodies. The reactions a vaccine may produce are: -Anaphylactic reactions. They are “immediate, sudden allergic reactions”, which appear the very moment the inoculation is being done (or a few seconds or minutes later), and may threat the animalʼs life. In these cases, the Vet must put a treatment immediately. When this happens, the animal can never again have the involved vaccine. Fortunately, in our 15 years career as Vets we have never seen an extreme case like this. -Vasovagal reactions. Their cause is the stress and fear the animal (and owner) suffers during the inoculation. Blood pressure falls down, and the animal (or the owner) collapses. Despite itʼs spectacular, is not a very worrying problem. We have seen this just once. -Febrile reactions. A few hours after the injection, the animal looks in pain and gets febrile and lethargic and refuses its food. It normally lasts for 2-3 days, and the treatment consists on anti-inflammatory drugs. In case of a vasovagal or febrile reaction, the animal can be vaccinated again in the future. All these reactions are a bit more common in vaccines such as distemper one. Those animals which have suffered a mild post-vaccine reaction in the past must be controlled every time they are re-vaccinated, and, when possible, to perform a previous vaccine sensitivity test just to find out if the vaccine is going to produce an abnormal reaction again. The way to do it is very simple, and it consists in an intradermal injection of some specific substances. This is not a routine procedure, because really dangerous post vaccine reactions are extremely uncommon. Another fact that has been reported these last 6 months is that, the smaller the dog, the more common the reactions against leishmaniasis vaccine appear. In case of extremely small toy dogs, it has to be considered if the risk of reactions justifies the protection against the disease that the vaccine is going to provide them. WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT? by

Mark Etheridge When I’m not in Gran Alacant, I work on a North Sea oil drilling rig, and the birding possibilities are, as you may imagine, somewhat limited. We do have an influx of land birds which cross the North Sea during the migration season, but for the most part I am limited to watching various species of seagull. I would be the first to admit that they’re not the most exciting birds to watch, and my offshore colleagues have a rather disparaging name for them which basically describes their habit of leaving white marks all over the rig. They can be equally troublesome on land, being attracted to rubbish tips and small children holding ice cream cones, with the inevitable outcome that we’ve all seen on “You’ve Been Framed” and other TV video clip shows. However, there are variations within the Seagull family, and here is one of the more interesting ones. This is an Audouin’s Gull, a Mediterranean species only very rarely seen in the UK but common enough in our corner of Spain. It is easily separated from other gulls by that very heavy red beak with a black tip, and it is slightly smaller than the more common Yellow-legged Gull, which is a close relative of the British Herring Gull (the one which causes all the trouble back home). This one was a regular sight recently at the Clot, dropping in for a drink of fresh water on the main pool most afternoons – sometimes there were up to five birds present at any one time. They inhabit Mediterranean coasts, but do need access to fresh water to quench their thirst. If you look closely at my photo, you will see that this bird has been ringed, and the markings show that this bird was caught in the Coto Donana reserve in southern Spain, where it was probably ringed as a chick. There is an ongoing programme there to study these birds, as they are one of the world’s rarer Gull species, and there have been several sightings of Donana-ringed birds in our area, proving that they are spreading northwards from their area of birth. Audouin’s Gulls (known as Gaviota de Audouin in Spanish) don’t have the same anti-social habits as mentioned above, but they do cause a certain amount of mayhem amongst the water breeding species by taking baby ducklings, Coots, Moorhens and Grebes, but usually they feed quite happily on fish and the organic detritus which is always to be found on sea beaches. The gull was named after the French naturalist Jean Victoire Audouin, who was a bit of an all-round clever clogs; an entomologist, ornithologist and a malacologist – which is someone who is interested in molluscs. See you next month.
