Menkes, a multi-disciplinary development company and property manager that strives to build high-quality, people-oriented buildings, has been a leader in sustainability for more than a decade.

“Our team has always tried to innovate and find new ways to improve,” says Menkes’ Director of Portfolio Services and Sustainability, Jon Douglas. “That means high-performance buildings that reduce our impact on the environment and promote the health and wellness of our occupants.”

Douglas himself has worked in sustainability for many years, first as a sustainability consultant and then the sustainability practice leader for Perkins & Will, before joining Menkes four years ago.

In the early years, he recalls, the commercial real estate industry’s interest in sustainability was driven by tenant demand. Today he says the driving force comes from the investors: companies are looking to define their purpose and to secure their social license to operate, and sustainability can be a big part of that.

Menkes has won numerous industry awards for its efforts, including a Certificate of Excellence, The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) and Earth Award for the beautiful 25 York Street. last year, along with a Pinnacle award for Innovation.

Ultimately, concludes Douglas, “sustainability is about shifting the way we think and changing our habits and practices. It succeeds when it is aligned with an organization’s strategy, instead of trying to rub against the grain.”
